Good food here. I'm glad I decided to step away from my normal gyro place to give Gyro Palace a shot. I had the homemade gyro which is a regular gyro with French fries in it. I found the French fries to be an interesting add on but besides that the meat was so juicy and it complemented everything else included in the gyro sandwich. My girlfriend had the gyro melt which was gyro meat on an open faced pita with melted mozzarella cheese on top, to die for. I can't wait to come back here and give something else a shot. read more

So, what you can't tell right off the bat is that I had my cursor hovering over the 4th and 5th star for a minute. I went with 4 just because I kind of feel that mayyyyybe the prices are a liiiiiittle high for Greek takeout. Otherwise, Gyro Palace is just perfect. Greek salad with chicken souvlaki is worthy of just going head first with open mouth. Their pita bread is always soft and warm , tzatziki is on point and you get a BIG container. Their hummus is the best I've tried....super smooth and the flavor is mild and perfect. We get takeout from here for lucnh at workpretty often and I always enjoy calling in the order because they are just so nice and funny when you call, like they WANT to make you lunch, which is rare, really.... Holy Moly this place is beyond delicious. Like great Greek food at an awesome price. I always find myself super satisfied when I leave. The girls that work the counter dining area are super nice and friendly. Seems like they do a lot of takeout business, which is rare for things like salads and gyro meat. My office in Freeport orders from here every so often, they charge a "delivery fee" because were not in the same town....we're about 5 minutes away, cut the crap. The food is amazing though which is why we deal with the fee and the miserable people who take our order. A guy answered one time and was super rude, another time it was a woman and same thing. I remember one of my co-workers asked for extra pita and they made a big deal about putting it in separate foil (separate from someone's order of hummus and pita) Like hello it's 2 separate orders. If their customer service was better, it would probably be 5 stars, although that delivery fee is ridiculous. read more

I picked up Gyro Palace for take out tonight. I sent my husband to get the food and he forgot to grab the coupon for a small greek salad. I took a picture of the coupon and promised to drop it by the next morning. They would not allow this, and actually made my husband drive and pick up the coupon. I understand the policy is to have the coupon, but this just left a very sour taste in our mouths. We just moved to the neighborhood and was appauled that they would not let us drop it by. Place is easy to miss,but if you find it you'll be back. I've been there a few times and I've never been let down. The gyros are great and the falafel is outstanding. There is nothing more then I can describe this food and service by perfect. GEORGE the man behind the counter is extremely nice to speak to, explains each dish like a fine Italian restaurant waiter would, even though we are referring to Greek food. One time I forgot cash and he didn't hesitate to tab me. The falafel is the best I ever tasted. The meat in the gyro is so delicious, and they have whole wheat wraps! My friends and I wanted Greek and someone suggested this place. At first I was skeptic. The place is pretty small 4 booths and 3 or 4 tables so it was a tight squeeze. The menu is big so the selection is wide. They have dinner specials so you can have a pretty nice meal for a decent price. The Gyro dinner was great! And the falafel appetizer hits the spot as well. Ventured here since Santorini is under construction. This certainly is no Santorini (one of the best Greek places on the island you can find), but it definitely is a great option for Greek. Gyro meat is delicious (and they give you plenty) and prices are very reasonable considering the amount of food you get. Found this spot on a whim by my house as I was starving and my plans to do some work at a local library was derailed. I ordered over the phone and asked a genuine question about their specials and the lady was nasty and quick to give me an attitude. She somehow assumed I knew what the specials came with being that I asked about it. I proceeded to respond to her by saying "this is my first time ordering that's why I'm asking". When I picked up the food in person, she swiped my card twice. After the first swipe, she questioned whether it went through. Before leaving, I just wanted to verify that I didn't get charged twice so I asked her about it. She responded by saying it declined first and she said I can give you the receipt. I then said no it's okay I believe you, I just asked because you sounded unsure after the first swipe. She proceeded to throw the receipt on the counter that said "declined" after I told her it's okay. The food was decent however the stars were taken off due to this lady's poor attitude. Not sure if she had a bad day but she shouldn't take it out on paying customers, especially during these times where local businesses are suffering as it is. This is my first time writing a review on Yelp and it's sad it had to be a semi-negative one but it was really ridiculous how nasty this lady was. Hopefully everyone has a better attitude in 2021! I used to work at Gyro Palace and I must say, the owner (George) is a cool dude and the food is pretty good. In terms of sit down dining, the place isn't exactly the ritz, but they did renovate recently and it's a good spot for families of 4 or friends. My favorite food includes: Chicken Souvlaki - The chicken souvlaki is a type of greek chicken that is cubed, marinaded and chopped into chunks. Simple. That leads me to: 2. The Chicken Kebab Dinner The chicken kebab is a dinner that comes with Chicken Souvlaki over rice pilaf with an array of grilled vegetables that include: peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. The rice pilaf, even as a stand alone side, is delicious. I think it's made in a very light, butter sauce and it's very addictive. Also, the dinner comes with a side of their yogurt sauce. This sauce is made fresh daily and it's kind of like a cucumber based yogurt that is thick yet, refreshing. Pro tip: get an extra sauce for a dollar, it's worth it. The dinner also comes with their fresh pita bread, which is lightly grilled and a tasty addition. Finally, it comes with soup and salad. The soup options are Chicken Lemon and Split pea and the salad is a nicely done, Greek Salad with really fresh feta cheese. Some other recommendations: The Homemade Gyro - The homemade gyro is pita bread filled with fresh lamb, pork and french fries. Gyro Palace, for whatever reason, has the best french fries on long island. That's not even a joke. I don't even think George intended it to be that way, but they are perfectly crispy and scarily addictive. The Philly Cheese Steak - I'm really addicted to this sandwich as they do it nice with fresh cut beef, gobs of melted mozarella, peppers, onions and a lightly toasted ciabatta bread that is utterly perfect. The Healthy Melt - Layer of grilled vegetables. Layer of cheese. Layer of pita bread. I like to add chicken souvlaki on top, which probably detracts from the truth health of it, but it's a very tasty dish overall. Chicken Lemon Soup - This soup is just very unique and there is sort of a "lemon," theme among a lot of the food like the "Lemon Potatoes," which are also surprisingly delightful. The split pea is also hearty, thick and delicious and probably more popular then the chicken lemon. Greek String Beans - These are string beans in a sweet, marinara type sauce and it's just a great side if you want something healthier then fries. I think Gyro Palace is a great place to come for families that aren't overly pretentious, friends who want a great, affordable meal and obviously, people who love greek food. It's a nice place to come with 4 people. I think 4 is the perfect number, but they can seat up to 8 and although it's probably irrelevant, their bathroom is spotless. On one last final note, George makes all the desserts himself and not only are they fresh, but they're a unique culinary experience; seriously. Try the Ekmek or the Baklava. I think Gyro Palace is a modest, diamond in the ruff that almost prides itself in being a well kept secret. read more

This is my go to spot for a homemade traditional gyro. I love the large selection of Greek cuisine. The food is always plentiful and tasteful. I also enjoy the family environment and setting. If you're thinking of dining in; there is not a lot of seating. I would assume that Covid will make it even more difficult to dine in and/or give you a longer wait. Late dinner decision that my wife picked up the order on her way home from work...not bad. The Greek salad wasn't the best Greek salad I ever had but it was good enough. The gyro meat was good, and the tzaiki sauce was also good. Large Greek salad was big enough for both of us with some leftover. The bevy of positive reviews on here made me give this a try as it's close to a relatives house-- it was underwhelming at best. I always give any restaurant a few chances before writing them off, and I rarely take the time to review one. It usually has to be a really great experience or a really bad one. This falls closer to the latter. On one visit I had the gyro and fries. I walked in to the disorganized little storefront and asked to make an order to go. Everyone looked kind of frazzled, even at 5pm on a weeknight with 2 tables in the restaurant. The staff seemed nice. I waited. No big deal. I asked to place an order for a gyro with fries. I had to pronounce it incorrectly when I was met with a blank stare after saying "yee-roh" several time. The waitress figured out what I wanted and corrected me with "jai-roh". Okay. Whatever. We're not in Greece, we're on Long Island. I can deal with that. My order came quickly. The meat was plentiful and was the standard, ubiquitous, processed meat on a spit that we've all come to expect. Not necessarily a bad thing, but nothing to rave about either. The pita it was put on was old. I saw them pregrilling them and stacking them about 40 high in the kitchen, causing them to be stale and tough. They were most likely frozen previously- it had the tooth of a bread that was previously frozen. The veggies in the gyro were slightly brown and showed a bit of age, but were also plentiful. The tzatziki sauce came on the side (for better or worse), and lacked flavor. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a Sysco product and was not homemade. The fries were beyond substandard. They tasted frozen, were not well seasoned, and I ended up just throwing them away. Again, it would be a safe bet to assume that they were a frozen Sysco product. I decided to give it another chance tonight as I would with any local family owned business, and ordered a falafel sandwich. I knew I was probably in for the same treatment with the stale pita and the not-so-fresh veggies, but I was truly appalled by the falafel. ZERO texture. Soft, doughy balls without flavor. Not remotely crispy on the outside. Honestly some of the worst falafel I've ever eaten. My expectations about the veggies and pita were spot on, and the tahini sauce didn't fare much better. I was smart enough not to order fries. Do you want a big sandwich for your $6-7? I guess you could eat here. They certainly put a lot of filling in the pita. Do you want it to taste good? Look elsewhere. This isn't food that the people making it take pride in, that was evident every step of the way. read more

Wow!! As I become a yelp snob this is a five star place to me. The pita bread was fresh and warm even when arrived at my table wrapped around a fully stuffed gyro. It was hard to decide what I wanted to try so I went safe route and got the gyro which was not a disappointment. Fully loaded to the gills and the tziki sauce was delicious too. Ordered some takeout from this little Greek recently and found it to be so-so. My Gyro seemed very chewy and overcooked and liberally seasoned. Wife ordered a veggie wrap and she complained about how greasy it was. French fries are commercial tasting and were probably cooked in oil that was too hot causing the fries to rip apart. *People with food allergies/sensitivities* Last night my husband and I ordered dinner from Gyro Palace. Both us, and our families have been customers for years. I recently began a dairy elimination diet while breastfeeding my daughter who has a potential allergy/intolerance. We explained that there is a dairy allergy and requested that an effort be made to keep my chicken souvlaki/rice and side salad free of any feta cheese or other dairy. We were told that they are not a dairy free restaurant, but they agreed to make an effort. When picking up the food, I was again reminded that they are not a dairy free restaurant. Also, that if an allergy is severe they tell people this isn't the restaurant for them. I appreciated their honesty and asked if an effort was made to keep my food away from dairy, and was told yes. When I got home, before even removing the clear plastic lid, my husband and I could see a small but visible sprinkling of feta cheese on both the side salad and the rice. Clearly a very poor effort had been made to accommodate my dairy-free needs. I called this morning to inform them of the situation and encourage them to take better measures when dealing with food allergies. I was given an apology and told they would watch the video surveillance from last night. I was also told (again) that they typically tell customers with severe allergies that this isn't the restaurant for them. If you don't have food allergies, this is a great place for greek takeout. However, if you or a family memeber have even a mild food sensitivity, this probably "isn't the restaurant for you". Regardless of how mild or severe, it's not worth the reaction and discomfort. Used to absolutely love this place and I still think they have great food. However their customer service speaks volumes with the response we got recently. Ordered delivery, the falafel Platter with lemon potatoes which comes as an option with that platter. They accidentally sent sweet potato fries. Called up to let them know and they said no problem when delivery guy returns we will send him back with potatoes. 10 minutes later we get a call with the cashier arguing that we asked for these fries. I assure you we did not. Instead of just giving us a credit or making it right she argued with my husband saying he was wrong and that if we wanted the potatoes they'd have to charge us extra. How is it extra when it comes as a side option with the platter we ordered??? . When we called back tonight to try and make amends, she sarcastically asks my husband well what do you want me to do for you now? How about sorry for our screw up, next time you come in we will sort this out. I have friends who own restaurants and they would never treat regular customers like this. We were not looking for free food, or to pull one over on anybody. Just some sort of apology and way of resolving the situation. We won't be ordering from them anytime soon. I happen to be greek and i have ordered from Gyro Palace a few times, the food is okay, its convenient if I want a real Gyro I drive an extra 20 minutes to Fontana,they have the real deal homemade gyro not that frozen crap from Chicago. Best Greek in the Merrick area. It's somewhat on the pricey side but the food is great, and I'd rather pay more for better food than eat something that doesn't taste good. The building doesn't seem very impressive but as I said, the food is great. Parking is easy. read more
