We ordered several items to share and all agreed they were excellent. One of my friend -- who had been with me to a different Vietnamese restaurant in Madison heights last month -- agreed that it was much better. Gao New place. Interesting. New light in the area. A welcome pho spot. Bright, clean, fresh air, not old like the old pho restaurant. Updated bathrooms, walls, decor, everything. Nice job. History, the original pho place here (located) was Hang PHO and was the top best pho in Michigan. You can see pho in Michigan started here. Hang pho was sold and had new owners(Chinese). That business failed. No customers. Same pho, but people in the area only ate pho from Real Vietnamese owners. Everyone knew. I felt sorry for them. All the workers moved to Detroit Pho & Crab. Basically that was when Detroit Pho & Crab blew up and became the Top pho place. Few years later, this restaurant was sold and became Gao. Same pho flavor! Same great taste! Detroit Pho & Crab is still Top pho place. Since this new place opened up, business has moved back to this area. Don't talk about Thang Long Thai & Vietnamese, that place is long gone. Thang Long Thai & Vietnamese was always the 2nd best pho. Thang Long Thai & Vietnamese was sold to some Chinese owners and never tasted the same. At one time Thang Long Thai & Vietnamese was very good. ***FYI, I'm a crazy pho eater that has to have pho from all over. I travel far and in between the states. Eating from LA, Vegas, MN, WI, MI, IL, NC, OH, Manhattan, NY, FL, KS, MS, D.C.,TX, Canada, etc. I've had the best pho (rated by the expert locals) in LA, Hollywood, Chicago, GA, and FL. I make reviews after tasting their pho. I know what pho is good and what is fake!*** Do not miss this GEM! If you live outside Michigan, try this place !! My Star System: 1=Dumpster fire. Yummy food and drinks! Service was pretty good and it had SUCH a beautiful look inside here. Drinks weren't anything crazy-- we got a Vietnamese Coffee with Ube foam, and coconut water topped with a Matcha foam. The ube flavor didn't really pull out as much I'd hoped for, but the matcha coconut blended so nicely together! I had the house special pho and thought the broth base could be a bit more flavorful. Saw this place highly reviewed on Google so decided to try it. It was packed at noon on a Sunday. We ordered takeout with a chicken pho, a vermicelli dish, and a third noodle dish that had a side of soup. All three dishes were flavorful, had a good amount of meat, noodle, and sauce as needed. It is a distinctly Vietnamese taste without being too heavy on the salt or sugar. The spring rolls were the favorite part of my dish as it was crunchy and paired well with the meat, noodles and vegetables. What a great find! My friend discovered this gem and we're so glad she recommended we meet there! For starters we had the fried egg rolls, which were a very good balance of flavors. 10 out of 10....no notes (ok one note later in the review) On my first visit, the restaurant was packed at 11 am on a weekday and i knew it was going to be good. Service is prompt, gracious, welcoming. The vietnamese ube latte was the best coffee drink I have ever had. I love that the default for all of their various vietnamese coffee beverages is iced. They were nice enough to sub tofu in the fresh rolls appetizer (usually comes with shrimp) and the peanut dipping sauce was so flavorful. The vermicelli bowl had lots of fresh cilantro and basil. They serve it with scissors for noodle cutting! I felt it could have used more veggies and less noodles, but I can't even be mad about it. I cannot wait to return. read more

First visit here at Gao, and I loved it. Aesthetic, clean, and casual vibes indoors. I have been searching for a pho dish that leaves me happy, and Gao did exactly that. Broth was wonderful, rich, and had a generous serving of meats. Pickled onions came as a side dish which I appreciated as a palate cleanser in a way. Fresh spring rolls were also fantastic with the peanut sauce the way I like it! Service was great and extremely accommodating. I know I've only been saying very positive comments within this review but in all honesty, I was very happy with my visit here. It will be my go-to Vietnamese restaurant. Tried out this new place after someone recommended it to us. This is a new restaurant with new ownership. The decor is fun and lively. The space is very open and inviting, perfect for large groups too. The staff were all very nice and offered great service. We were really happy with the food quality and freshness of the ingredients. They used good sized shrimp in the fresh rolls and the pho broth was delicious and flavorful. You can tell all of the vegetables and toppings are fresh and thoroughly picked through. I hate getting bad bean sprouts and basil when I eat pho. I also tried the Vietnamese egg coffee and that was delicious! Will definitely come back to try more items on the menu! read more

The wall of faces looks very much like the Korean character faces to me on the side wall. Eerily similar. Lots of Lunar New Year decor inside. It's nice inside. It's newer and looks clean. We shall see how this place compares to some of my preferred Vietnamese spots between John R and Dequindre road. My table was a bit dirty. Good thing there is hot tea to clean my side of the table. The fresh rolls are made with either pork or shrimp, I don't eat either. No apps for me. Other veggie or chicken options would be good, since they have chicken. I got pot of Jasmine green tea, a build my own vermicelli bowl with double chicken vermicelli bowl with an egg roll. $16.96 The tea is a bit weak, but there's only one tea bag for the pot. It's ok. Very light flavor of green tea. It's a decent sized dining area. The chicken is tender and slightly seasoned and grilled nicely. The egg rolls are thin, but super crunchy. They are decent. The vermicelli noodles are what you would expect. It's filler food. Do try the chili sauce, it's got some heat that burns at the back of your mouth and the heat, it builds up too. Added some sriracha and some chili to the chicken vermicelli to give it more flavor than the fish sauce. Service is very good. read more

Did a take out order and the staff is friendly. Paid $17 for a build your own vermicelli bowl with 2 portions of chicken and one portion of shrimp. Unfortunately the bowl is 85% vermicelli and 15% protein. Super disappointed in the protein portion sizing. It is good but not at all worth the value for what they give you. The nem cuon (pork spring rolls) and cánh gà chiên nuoc man (chicken wings) were delicious . The wings were so crispy and the sauce was an amazing combination. I got the bún cha hànoi dish which I really enjoyed. I also got the Vietnamese egg coffee which had a nice balance of coffee and sweetness to it. My only complaint was that the drinks come in plastic to go containers so it's not as aesthetic as the picture, but you do get more of the drink in a way because the cup is larger than the ones pictured. Gao took over the Pho Hang Restaurant location. It opened on January 12, 2026. The owners of GAO remodeled the outside and inside. It's more spacious. I travel outside of Michigan to find Vietnamese beverages so I was happy to see the beverage options of Vietnamese coffees. I tried the Vietnamese Ube Coffee. It was so good. Had dinner with wife and friend and we got there just in time to be seated around 6:30 tonight (Sat.). Had fish wings which were really chicken wings in a fish sauce and a rice with three types of protein they pork meatloaf, fried tofu topped with a fried egg on rice. Others had spring rolls with a chicken vermicelli dish. Food was outstanding and service was excellent as usual. Prices are reasonable since 3 of us had dinner for less than $70. The food was good, but our experience was uncomfortable. When my husband and I visited, the server initially avoided speaking directly to him and only addressed me. My husband is Black, and it felt like he was being ignored at first. I'm Asian myself, and we were one of the only interracial couples there. Several other diners kept staring at him during our visit, which made us feel unwelcome. It's unfortunate because the food was great, but the overall experience left a bad impression.
