(this is an h&r block during tax season) USE AN ONLINE TAX SOFTWARE. SAME AMOUNT OF PERSONABLE SERVICE. MUCH CHEAPER. I walked in to ask how much it would cost to file my taxes. Front desk young lady quoted me about $80 after i had explained to her all the forms I had, and the issue I was having. When I came in, I explained to the preparer that I have always used turbotax to file my taxes, but since I owed alot of money this year, I wanted a person to look over them and answer my questions. After typing in everything into the software, he got the same result as turbo tax. i had plenty of questions. The answer to all my questions was "WELL, YOU GOT PENALIZED. THATS JUST THE WAY IT GOES, SORRY." no tax rate explained. no tax brackets explained. no penalties explained. i asked for specific amounts of what i owed, and no answer. i asked in about 20 different ways for answers to my questions. received none. should have filled in the blanks myself with turbo tax. he was more of a data entry employee than an actual tax "expert" like h&r block claims! he even smirked when i asked about the advertised "second look." did he give a 2nd look? NO. my $80 filing turned into about $220 for some unknown, INEXPLICABLE reason. i complained, and got about $50 off right away, so im sure everyone complains...dont waste your money, go to a tax EXPERT you trust, or do it yourself online. read more

This is my first year doing taxes since I graduated UCLA and got a job and was just totally clueless on the whole process so I came to the Pasadena Tax Center/H&R Block after a co-worker referred me to his uncle's place. When I got there Raymond helped me out SOOO much. I was totally confused and just dropped all my envelopes, bills, and brought along all my information and crap and he didn't even flinch. He was very nice and helped me sort through everything. He even explained the process and what he was doing so even I can understand what the hell was going on. It took less than an hour and the price was reasonable. In fact, I felt that it was totally worth it because he saved me so much time and headache and I was able to get all these deductions. Not at all in the whole process did I feel ripped off, cheated, or overcharged for being completely clueless like I thought I might be. I walked out feeling great and that my taxes were prepared by a professional. Since I am self-employed I didn't want to prepare my taxes on my own and wanted to work with someone who would be patient with me and help me reduce the amount owed (legally of course!). I had high expectations because of my friend's recommendation and Ray not only met, but exceeded them. I've never met with a CPA before today. I usually file all my taxes via TurboTax. I made that clear to Raymond Ng from the very beginning. He didn't try to dissuade me from using an opposing company. The extra staff that is brought in board at this location was helpful, in fact, she was great. However, we left one of our documents (proof of healthcare from Covered California )at home and needed to bring it back the next week to submit to complete our taxes. Raymond asked us to pay the amount in full, which included adding in the document we were going to bring in the following week. He suggested it would be easier so we could just drop off the document, he would update it and we would be all set. We paid about $400 each (simple tax returns, w-2, roth, mortgage interest), and as mentioned, we paid in full, and made sure there would not be additional charges when we drop off the final document. When we returned the following week, Raymond wanted to charge us another $65 to add in the form from Covered California, which we clearly discussed at the initial appointment when he suggested we pay the amount in full to simplify and speed up the process. He denied it and called us liars. The experience here with him was very negative and punishing. And because it's a franchise, your complaint and concerns really don't go beyond him. read more

I love this place! I went in here a couple days ago and Chris helped me. He was extremely professional and it was obvious he knew exactly what he was doing. I went in here with a number in my head that I thought I would get back and by the time we were done had actually helped me get back an extra $1,000 that I would've never known I could've gotten back. I also really liked the morale of the whole place, Chris had a question about categorizing something and his coworker (I think his name was Frank) stopped what he was doing and came over and helped so we could finish because I had an appointment to go to. Jan McFarlane has been a great to me with my taxes. I called for a different question about my taxes and when she had answered she was great and gave me what I needed. But later she noticed there was a mistake in my filling. My taxes were not done correctly and she was able to locate a mistake that the other accountant had missed. She has noticed the CA State was not amended just the Federal. So now I have to go in and have them make the changes. read more

I stood up and left in the middle of my appointment because I have never been made to feel so belittled in my entire life. Although I do not have much to claim, I still like to have someone in front of me walking me through the filling process. After reading great reviews about Frank, I decided to make an appointment with him. Bad decision. He laughed at me multiple times and questioned the answers I would give him, like I was a five year old. ie. "are you sure? that seems like a low number to me; This is the only income you have??" then would laugh at me, making me feel like an idiot. Hold your criticism Frank, you work at H&R Block. Why would I ever go file taxes while feeling judged and not taken seriously at all? It is hard to even give this review one star but Yelp will not let me give zero stars. read more
