I went to H R Block in Pasadena for a 15 min. appoint for a simple tax prep. I am 82, I had only a social security 1099 and one 1099 from an online tutoring platform. The appointment went on for more than hour, the staff person spoke very little English, worked at a snail's pace and needed help three times from other staffers to fill out the forms. She apologized often and seemed confused. She asked about deductions only once, when it appeared that I would pay tax this year, the first time ever. In the past, I have used the same accountant who always found deductions to balance my income. No help with that here, except for office expenses. She asked about those and included them. In the past I paid $75 for tax prep for many years. This fee at H&R Block was $282 for very poor service. Additionally, this week the feds will take $75. This fee is too high for a retired teacher who makes less than $35,000/yr. and has an extremely simple tax situation. I will not use HR Block again. read more

I took me 7 weeks to work my way through their system to find someone that could handle my small business taxes, because most of their staff are only capable of doing the absolute most basic taxes. When I found that person and sent them all of my information, they didn't respond to my requests for a meeting or status update for nearly a month. When he did respond it was to reject doing my taxes. I then spent 2 months trying to get assigned to another tax preparer, only to learn they had closed their operation for the year and didn't have anyone in California who could work on my taxes. Someone from Texas reached out, but they said they could only do my federal returns. Now it's come out they've been illegally selling everyone's personal information to Meta... I recently got a friendly hello from IRS for an audit. It was scary and I had a deadline to pay. I knew I shouldn't pay for this amount the IRS is alleging I owed, so I took it to Raymond Ng for assistance. He is the owner of this H& R Block. He is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He agreed that Bank of America had made a mistake in sending in a 1099 to IRS. Since BOA is refusing to correct their mistake, I had to prove that I was right. Mr Ng explain the position taken by the IRS and advised me on my options to resolve my issue. He reviewed the notice and explain in simple words what it means. He assisted me with responding to the IRS and assembling documents and records for the tax audit. He challenged the IRS for me and assisted in the appealing process. I am so happy to report that my IRS claim has resolved. I went from owing $3000 + interest to absolutely nothing. NOPE. Absolutely stunned by all the five star reviews as this office is gouging its customers. Had my small business taxes done here the past two years. The first year they seemed to charge much more than they had for my personal taxes and the agent said too bad those were the rates. The next year he attempted to charge even MORE and I refused to pay, negotiating him down to $250... which was very stressful and I still thought was ridiculous given that I had categorized all of my expenses into a spreadsheet, leaving him little work to do. So this year I decided to go to a different H&R Block office that was closer to me. Was bracing for the price to go up again... what did they charge me? $59. Same taxes. Same expenses. There was actually more work this year as they had to correct a state filing the other agent had screwed up. I'm absolutely furious that this office ripped me off to the tune of over $400 for basic tax prep. Be sure and check rates at other Pasadena locations prior to committing to their services. UPDATE: I did some research and know what the deal is now... this office is a franchise, it isn't owned by H&R Block. So their pricing is not in line with corporate rates. read more

Well, let's start with WALKING IN, and having them take me 10 minutes later= A+ They gave me JAN, who was just a sweetheart, and really helped me get 'breaks' where I could, since my EX-husband really 'stuck it to me' so to speak. This is the FIRST time EVER in my life I OWED taxes, and trust me, Jan looked at me and said "you need some water, let me get you some." I told her "no, but if you see me on the news tonight, it's because I robbed a bank...just say 'hey, I know that girl!' " She looked at me and say "no you won't" ...I guess they don't know me that well.... Anyway, the process would have easily rather been traded with: 1) pulling off my nails with a pliers 2) putting me naked in a tankful of SCORPIONS 3) Chewing on a LIGHTBULB (Yeah, I saw OCULUS!) or 4) Licking an electric eel But it is what it is, and before the IRS digs a hole for me in the hot, dry vegas desert, I figured, I had better cough up a lung...Hell, give them a KIDNEY while I am at it too! UGHHH i seriously hate growing up. This is my first year doing my taxes without the help of my dad's tax attorney :/ sucks to be an adult sometimes! So I went to yelp hoping one of my fellow yelpers could direct me down a yellow brick road to the right tax firm. I was grateful to find a branch that was open 7 days a week, even when it's not tax season. I was hesitant to call another HR block for help because I was told by the first branch that they were too busy to help me due to their limited hours (8H/1 day a week). I was really lucky that when I took a chance and called an HR block with a high rating, it was Ronald Lee who answered. He helped me through a complicated amendment. I first want to start off by the initial phone call to set an appointment to do my taxes. Chris was so helpful. He was like my own mapquest by offering directions to the location here in Pasadena. Chris was very professional and made my visit to do taxes a breeze. I dread doing taxes every year. His personality and knowledge of the new tax laws made the whole experience easy. My appointment was taken right on time. Chris offered me water and a seat and before diving into the taxes, just got to know me and what I wanted to accomplish this year filing. He was friendly, had a sense of humor and guided me step by step in making sure that I get every deduction and maximize my refund. I'm sure Chris finds ways to get your "billions back" like I see and hear on their tv and radio ads. It was pretty apparent that this location is quite busy. I never felt rushed and Chris took the time to get each category of my filing marked off. I've gone to him for 2 years now and will likely go again this year. He will sit with you as long as you need to answer your questions - last year was so rushed and complicated, I actually had to come back the next day to finish them and he was totally chill about it.
