Great to have this well-known Korean grocery store in downtown Chicago! I loved walking around, wandering the aisles, and admiring all the cool specialty items offered. There's a neat seafood area with live fish, sushi, and poke. And I want to buy all of the snacks! Be forewarned that the prices of a lot of items are high. But as such a highly specialized store in the heart of downtown with incredible selection, I'm sure they've got bills to pay. The sheer variety they have of a single item (I counted over 20 brands of sesame oil alone) is astounding. There's also a food court that has some really delicious looking food, including tofu stew, korean barbecue, and Japanese. Definitely worth a visit! There's a dedicated parking lot on the side which was full when I came, but there street out in front was under construction/blocked off and didn't have any warning signs, so I just parked there. read more

One of the cleanest grocery stores in Chicago. Wipes, antibacterial spray and gloves are available at the front door. Wipe down your cart or basket, wear your required face mask, and start shopping. This is a great Asian grocery store. They sell a lot of ingredients that you cannot find in typical grocers like udon noodles, and authentic Asian seasoning or candies. They also have your typical Asian food that is precooked and just requires a simple warm up. My favorite thing about this store is simply being able to walk around and look at the large variety of items that I can cook myself instead of ordering takeout. After the pandemic I wanted to learn more about cooking different types of foods and visiting H Mart has made that easier to accomplish! You can also dine in and enjoy authentic cuisines. I am so glad I do not have to travel to the suburbs to visit an H-mart! If you're planning on driving, I would try to come here on off-times because the parking lot is small. Most importantly, parking is free! The H-mart is small, but it has all the Asian grocery essentials you're looking for. This H Mart isn't as large are some of the H-Marts I've been to in LA, but man, they do pack in a LOT at this location given the size, and it feels very new and modern on the inside which is great. A lot of items can be on the pricier side, abs given that they have prime real estate right in downtown as well as the rising costs of food, it kind of makes sense. If you're looking for a place that sells virtually almost all Asian foods, sauces, products, etc... this would be a fantastic option for you. Obviously, H-Mart is Korean mostly, but you can still find other Asian products here. I was happy to visit this location the other day since I was nearby and needed some groceries as well as a KBBQ grill. I was able to get one for $30 and decided to buy some brisket that day as well to cook some KBBQ at home. It was delicious! Anyways, I'd 100% recommend this store if you're in the area looking for Korean or Asian products and food. Parking lot is fairly ample given it is located in downtown. The lay out of the parking lot and where the store entrance is kind of interesting, but not hard to figure out. Will be back for sure! read more

There's a repairman lying in the women's bathroom. He followed me in and fixed the sink without saying anything or apologizing. I tried to tell the manager, but all he said was never mind. It was very rude. I tried complaining to the customer center, but they didn't reply. The next time I went into the bathroom, the repairman followed me back in and was staring down at me fixing my lip makeup. I'm not the only one or two women who have had this problem, but they use repairman who they keep knowing. I don't know if Hmart came to the U.S. to sell Korean products and tried to learn advanced culture or even could use English. read more

Hmart is always great wherever you go. This one is a little smaller than the ones I've seen in the DMV area, but it's still much bigger than one in Ktown, NYC. I'm always amazed how they are able to fit so much stuff in the store. I never have a problem finding anything, and they even have a great little food court. The last time I got soon do bu jigae, and it was so good. The amount of food you get and the quality is definitely worth the price. The staff is also always so friendly and polite. read more

Just a brisk walk from Union Station, this link in the familiar NJ-based Korean-American grocery chain defies physics. In this compact space, you'll find not only a full-service Asian grocery, but also a small food court with a Café L'Ami, an SGD Dubu (Korean restaurant), an Izakaya Yume, and a Baru "Mindful Asian" that purports to healthy fried fare and starches. I've never eaten in the food court, and I've bought few actual groceries from among the extensive noodle and dumpling selections that are highlights along with the live fish offerings. Also notable are the housewares and beauty products. (The dessert- and coffee-themed hair products are baffling to me, because I can think of few combinations more gag-inducing than finding hair in food or drink, but that may just be me.) But I digress. Though I've checked in only twice, I actually drop by this location whenever I'm in Chicago, which is often. Perusing the aisles is a fun way to kill an hour while waiting for your train, and the grab-and-go section offers fresher, tastier, more interesting food than even the fanciest restaurants you'll find in pretty much any airport, which is where I was headed on this occasion. The twin-pack of Spam musubi contains a pair of individually wrapped portions and gives a 51¢ discount over purchasing them separately. These and the kimbap stayed fresh after many hours in my bag. The service was standard for what I expect as a market restaurant. The food court itself was nothing out of the ordinary. Parking is easy as they have their own parking spaces, and you can grocery shop afterwards. However, the food was... mediocre at best. The dishes I got were: [2/5] Dishes SoGong-Dong | Soondubu Jjigae - Mixed, Regular | $12.99 To preface, I LOVE the SGD in Glenview. I get the Soondubu Jjigae regularly. I expected some quality difference, but not to the extent of rating this location a 2-star. To start, you get less side dishes, which is obvious given the market cafeteria vibes. I don't dock it for that, but it does play into the overall experience. The three biggest sin that really knocked their rating down was the following: 1. Salty, like REALLY salty. I went through my rice so quick. 2. Clam shell shards. I can forgive using itty bitty clams, but the dish was full of clam shrapnel. I can't enjoy it if every spoonful had some clam shells in it. My Ca is between 8.5-10 mg/dL :) 3. The meats... were jerky??? I have never EVER had such tough thin slice meat. I thought I was eating jerky. That about killed the dish for me. This H-Mart was a pleasure to visit. It's not your biggest H-Mart, but I do like the fact that this is conveniently located in Downtown Chicago even not within the Koreatown vicinity. We were able to pick up a few groceries here during our trip, and Chicago is definitely on the pricier side when it comes to goods, and this location is not your biggest Hmart, but it has everything you need and they even have a food court that features Tore Ore & Paris Baguette. The parking situation on the other hand is a little tricky, but mind you not -- we're talking about Downtown Chicago. I enjoy shopping at H mart whenever I visit Chicago. Every branches offer different variety of food choice at the dine-in area. This time I tried the soft tofu soup with beef and kimchi and gyu don which they served sautéed beef over rice. Grocery and a meal, nice 2 in 1. However sadly they were sold out of the coveted boba bars, hope they'll bring it back soon as they weren't sure when it would come back. For the meal, started with the side of tteokbokki, or Korean rice cake. I thought it was fine but the people I were with said it was way too sweet. Since they were Korean, I trusted them on that. They said it supposed to be primarily savory with a hint of sweetness for balance instead of this over powering sugar bomb. Also for 6.99, I don't think the amount is worth it. The spicy pork and squid was fantastic though. Very flavorful, had all the flavors. This one didn't have the sweetness issue and definitely was complex in flavors. It was also pretty oily but grease is a condiment. The left over sauce really paired well with the rice. Also, the side soup was like a dashi egg drop soup and I really enjoyed dumping the rice into the soup and eating like that. I would come back for the spicy squid and pork but that's pretty much it. The Queen is a frequent shopper at this location to the point that it is her primary store, with Mariano a close second. She is a lover and connoisseur of all things ramen and other Asian treats. For the longest, she was ordering items from Amazon until she discovered this store not too far from her dorm at UIC. I have seen the various items she has brought home and have actually enjoyed the different ramen dishes she prepared for us from ingredients bought there. While not as prolific as The Queen when it comes to a love of Asian food, I do love dumplings and BBQ pork belly char siu bao. So when she decided to make a trip down there to do some shopping, I decided I would go with just to have a look around. First of all I am giving them the extra star for their protocols for COVID. Not only do they require you to wear masks, they had a big bottle of hand sanitizer, wipes and disposable gloves. Once inside the store, I was struck at how organized it was. While it had been my first time in the store, it was not difficult to locate items. If you are like The Queen and have a love of ramen and Asian products in general, this is the store. I was particularly happy at the large selection of dumplings they had and in nice size bags. I also found my BBQ pork belly char siu bao and was in heaven. The selection of dumplings made me tingly as they had a variety of meat and seafood types. I even found one with octopus...yum! My prized find was the moon pies I love so much and they had them in chocolate. Heaven! Pretty sure they don't call them moon pies, but not an issue as they taste great. The Queen introduced me to this veggie and shrimp snack item. Think of an air puffed Cheeto without the orange powder. It literally melted in my mouth and the flavors were actually pretty good. The meats looks great as well as the fresh seafood and they also have nice looking produce. If you are someone like The Queen that likes to make your own Asian dishes, this is the place to go. They have a lot of the traditional sauces and spices one would use, the different broths and soy milks to make the broths for ramen as well as the different noodles. The Queen was the one that educated me to the fact that ramen is not just ramen, that they are different types of noodles based on the type of broth you are making....color me surprised. The day we were there, the restaurants were closed, but The Queen mentioned that before COVID, she use to go there to grab a bite before shopping. The store is very clean and the staff was nice and everyone was wearing masks. And if you are a fan of Hello Kitty, man this is the store for you! There is HK toilet paper. My only complaint about this place is the parking lot, but that is because this joint is off the chain. We got down there 10 minutes, hear me, 10 minutes after they opened and the lot was full. Ended up parking on the street in front of the store in a metered spot, not a big deal. But that just gives you an idea how popular this place is. This store is much smaller as it's crammed into a tiny site at 111 W Jackson Blvd, but it provides many of the basic food items that the larger H Mart provides. read more

I'm not that S-mart but I know a K-mart when I see them, and this is not one of those. This is an H-mart. Not to be confused with your mother's painting store (Momart). This is a pretty awesome location for an Hmart close to the loop in Chicago. Just to the west of the main part of town and right next to all the highways. Definitely one of the better locations I've seen for one of these awesome International Grocery Stores. They have bathrooms right at the back and they have three or four pretty awesome little restaurants - mostly quite cheap and generally delicious. They also have a cute Bakery with Asian Delights. The Korean stall is my fave - SGB. Get their soups. Yum. I'm very happy that this Hmart exists in the heart of Chicago. It's really close to downtown and I would never expect to find it here. It's not even in Chinatown, just off by itself a little bit West of downtown but still inside the loop. There are tons of cool stuffsies inside including a bakery and three different stalls to eat from. It's always really busy but I've managed to find parking the last couple times I've been here. So I definitely give it a nice 5 star rating. They also have public bathrooms at the back which obviously came in handy and you can see that from the picture. I love coming to Hmart to purchase unique foods that I may not be able to find elsewhere. I have enjoyed the ingredients to make bibimbap at home and everything is freshly prepared and well packaged. I also recently checked out the hot food court and tried the Korean corn dog with potato on the outside. I've noticed an unfortunate trend that Korean corn dogs take way too long to be prepared, but these were overall decent. The appearance was spot on, but the coating and outside needing more seasoning (it was quite bland). The addition of ketchup and honey mustard was great, but not something I'd come back to get again. read more

When I bought my place there were three things missing from my area. 1. Coffee but dark matter opened. 2. A bar and I'm still waiting 3. A grocery store and then Hmart came swooping in to save the day by opening in the same building that I live in. With an instagram @iseafoodandeatit having access to quality seafood is important to me. Hmart has provided that with live fish, crab, lobster, etc. I probably cooked somewhere near 40 lobsters this summer. Snacks, meats, and of course asian sauces are my other go to items here. It definitely carries your basics and is a cleaner more organized version of most asian grocery stores I've been inside of. I can't say I'm a Korean expert but I am getting good. Made a quick stop here for some Korean snacks. HMart is my go-to for all of my Korean treats. It's familiar and comfort for me. I love that they're available in Chicago, as I was visiting from California. It has a small parking lot, but we got in with ease. Their food court has two entree areas and one even had my favorite onigiri and spam musubi finds. There's also a dessert counter, and if I recall correctly, also had some teas and beverage options. So glad one opened up and I finally made it to here! I don't have to make the trek to the suburbs to go here either! I came in around 8pm on a Wednesday night and it wasn't super busy. It's got a great stock of Asian goods. The kinds of things I can't find easily in my neighborhood market. I had been craving kimbap and they had a fish cake and spicy tuna one. I also got a packaged taiyaki ice cream along with some bulgogi which I think was worth it for its price. I'll have to come back earlier in the day when the stall is open. They have a good selection of food, but some things are extremely pricy. Not sure the reason behind, but I needed peppers and I had to go somewhere else for that, the price was very high for only few jalapeños or Thai chilies. I only got what I needed from there specifically and that's all. They had good service though, nice staff, and very clean. read more

This is probably my favorite Korean market. I love everything here. Soon tofu-actually all the different kinds of tofu, Asian pears, fresh perilla leaves for ssamjang. There are various types of meat - several varieties of fish, sliced beef- Korean style, Pork belly, pork, beef, pre-marinated bulgogi, fish balls, meat balls, live sea food(king crabs). Meat and veggies are reasonably priced too. There are all kinds of sauces, condiments, Korean and Chinese teas, Taiwanese cakes. This place is a snacker's delight. The wine/beer selection is not that great, but it has the main Korean stuff like makgeoli and soju. I also got two pounds of loose misugaru kind of for $7, which I think is pretty reasonable. read more

I've been to the H-Mart in Niles, Naperville, and Schaumburg. That's probably the order of which ones are the best in Chicagoland by size, offerings, prices, and of course the food court and vendors. After two long years of advertising, "opening soon", it finally happened. I was astounded at how much bigger this was than I imagined. It's still tight in the aisles, but there's a full fledged fresh seafood area, marinated meats bar, and room for a food court comprised of a cafe, Korean and Japanese food. The prices are well above what I'm used to paying at Joong Boo, Assi Plaza, or even the Niles and Naperville H-Marts. Guess that's the price of being in the city. At least there's a parking lot, but that's quickly filled too. For me, the best part of this H-Mart is the food court, and I think my fellow citizens do too. There are some people shopping for food here, but the food court is ALWAYS full. Be sure to check out Cafe L'ami, which has Asian baked goods like Tous Les Jours. I'm a huge fan of Hmart and Korean food so I was thrilled this one was going to be in the West Loop. I arrived on day 2 of its opening and the place was crazy busy. We arrived around 445pm and the food court seating area was completely full. We had to hover over people to grab their open seat when they were done dining. As the evening progressed, the crowds got worse. You've been warned!! The most popular restaurant was the Korean one. I ordered the bento box from here which included salad, three pieces of tempura, rice, kimchi and spicy pork for a little over $13. I really liked that they called the restaurant name and the ticket number over the speaker so you did not have to stand by the line waiting for your food. Make sure to grab a seat first though otherwise you will be carrying your tray of food to the dining area with no place to sit. That happened to a few people and I felt bad. The food trays could be very heavy depending on what your ordered (i.e soups!) They have a lot of items here. I love that they offer you the opportunity to purchase marinated meat by the pound (versus the already prepackaged marinated meats at the Niles location). Today I was able to pick up some marinated pork meat at $2.88 per pound. What a deal!! They were also offering Louisiana shrimp from the Gulf at $5.99 a pound. I prefer my shrimp farmed rather than from the mysterious waters of the Gulf so I had to pass on that deal but I thought it was a price! They had a lot of prepackaged foods as well. The one thing I couldn't find were my veggie sushi rolls. Maybe they had them earlier but sold out? Some things were pretty pricy like marinated cucumbers (almost $9!). Depending on what you like, prices on items can be hit or miss. The bakery section had freshly baked goods and even samples to try. Its located next to the bubble tea, coffee and tea section. For non-dairy milk drinkers they offer soy and almond milk as alternatives for $0.50 (yay!). They also offer lycée jelly and tapioca as add ons to your drink for $0.50. They have a frequent buyer program that you can participate to earn points for discounts. You need to fill out a form before getting the card and you need to find the lady that has the form. She was located in front of the Korean restaurant. There were so many people in this area I didnt even bother to grab a form. Maybe next time! Today they were giving out free calendars and dishwashing gloves with proof of purchase (grocery receipt). I asked if dine-in food receipts counted and they said no. I'll definitely be back but not any time soon. I'm hoping in a few weeks/months the crowds will die down. Shopping today was a bit stressful. Everyone was in my way and I was in everyone else's way. They have carts here but carts+small aisles+crowds=bad idea. Grab a basket instead. If you have small kids, I recommend keeping them at home because strollers+small aisles+crowds=bad idea. During my visit there was a small kid in a stroller crying his lungs out because he was so traumatized. Don't even bother to drive here. The parking lot line was bad and there were no empty spots. Take the blue line to Halsted and walk a few blocks or grab a taxi/uber. P.S. This Hmart is located in the city so the bag tax DOES apply. For some reason everyone was paying 7 cents for their bags. I stopped by after work. The place is clean from being new. It was hard maneuvering around the aisles as they are pretty narrow. The prices may be a bit higher than items to be found in Chinatown. Everything in the produce area is nicely labeled. There is free parking. But currently Van Buren is closed between Desplaines and Halsted. So the exit going east is easy. Once the I-290 is complete that may be different. They had a mini food court. I say mini because I think I only saw 2-3 restaurants. There didn't seem to be much place to sit and eat. Overall I think I would just stay and shop in Chinatown. The weekend is probably crazy and hectic. read more

H Mart used to be one of my favorite supermarkets, but today I'm really disappointed. It's so disgusting. The ingredients are extremely not fresh, and the after-sales service is also extremely bad and uncomponsible. I bought some fish at H Mart today, two of them are salted fish, which makes me sick. When I got home, I was going to use it as our dinner. When I opened it, I washed it and put it on a plate. Then I was about to boil water and steam it. But when I look back, I found that there were maggots on the fish and they were still moving. I know that the freshness of salted fish is definitely can not compared with other fresh fish, but it won't open up maggots, right? And it's still moving. At that time, I immediately took it to the store to ask for help, but Jongchul, the manager on duty, did not give us a reasonable analysis. He just told us that it was not surprising. It had happened before. He also said that it was possible that the fish ate and did not know what caused the body to grow parasites. At that time, I was really surprised to hear this answer. Didn't you check the goods before they were put on the shelves? In addition, you also know that this is not the first time it has happened.
