I grew up with a Vietnamese background and my parents always lookied out for a fair/cheap price for their meats and seafood, this place woud be considered expensive in their books. Yes, it's great because there is a huge variety of vegetables, seafood, meat, poultry, noodles, sauces, just about anything used in an Asian cuisine and yes all the oddities of the various candies and desserts are fun to look at and possibly try. However, to have to pay $6/lb for short ribs when I get them at the local Hispanic market for $2.99 (sometimes $1.99)/lb is beyond comprehension to me. Sure you can argue maybe it's more fresh, but what's not fresh about going straight to the butcher at the Hispanic market and asking him can I get 25lbs of that fresh looking short ribs, thinly slice to be marinade and cooked on the grill? Also I was expecting a Mitsuwa kind of ordeal where the market is on one side and the food court is on the other, what a disappointment. When I got to the food court only 2 out of the 4 restaurants were open. Maybe they're still expanding since it's quite empty in there, but if it was close to even being busy there wouldn't be seats for more than 15 people. Of course I'm not a local because this isn't exactly down the street from me, but even Wal-Mart or Target has kikkoman low-sodium soy sauce cheaper than this place! Sorry Super H-Mart I was hoping you'll impress me, but you'll be a one time stop. read more

This particular location of Super H Mart absolutely pales in comparison to the ginormous one in Niles. At about half of its size, the variety at this one in every area of the store, from produce and poultry to the food court and beauty supplies, is much more limited. Also, unlike the one in Niles, the ambiance and energy is not as vibrant, exciting and inviting: There are fewer roaming employees to give advice and hardly any samples. The only plus is that there are still unique items that my husband and I picked up here because they aren't in the usual neighboring grocery stores, such as Korean condiments like soybean paste and more affordable already-shelled fish. read more

Honestly this place should be shut down by the health inspector. I have a picture of the string beans where that will make you puke, not from looking at it, but from using your imagination of how they got that way. Message me if you want to see. In the summertime, they leave pork hocks out on these plastic beds with ice underneath. Noble idea, but the hocks would actually have to touch the ice to be cooled. Only the bottom layer of the stack makes this contact. Speaking of things making contact, the flies have a field day. The one in Niles and Burlington, MA are much better. read more

H Mart is fantastic for picking up groceries. It carries all the different brands of instant noodles (ramen), rice, soy sauce, sesame oils, and other seasonings. There is also a large variety of frozen meats and seafood to choose from. I also like to grab my munchies and fresh produce from here. The price is unbeatable! I bought my rice cooker from here too! When H Mart first opened they were giving out free fruit trays and other gifts to show their appreciation for you shopping with them. The last time I went they gave me slips to enter into their free sweepstakes drawings. read more

Poor customer service! We usually go to Hmart for our Asian Groceries. While in line waiting to check out, my kids and husband decided to get a scratch off and won $10. They were was super excited and waited in customer service area for literally 20 mins to cash the scratch off. The lady in the customer service ignored them entire time and would not event looked at her. Once I finished check out, I went over and politely asked her if we are able to cash it. She was extremely rude, give me a dirty look and didn't event speak a word to me. At the end she tossed the money at me and walked way. Not kidding if my kids was around, I would blasted her face lol and teach her some respect and real customer service. She's really unfit for her job and such bitter person that shouldn't working there. read more

I walked in and the smell of fish hits hard. Not like "oh I love the ocean" smell, but a rancid pirate's underpants type of smell. But I wanted to find some Asian treats that you just can't score anywhere else so I went on. The produce is wide spread but about 40% is rotten or close to it. If I had a Delorean and could go back to last week maybe I would have bought something. They did have durian. I don't know anyone who would eat one of those. Also the meat looked iffy so I stayed away. But I did like the dried pepper section. Also they have a great selection of vinegars and Asian condiments. So if you are buying packaged goods this place is great but I would stay away from perishables from what I saw at the store. read more

Not as big and doesn't have as many items as the one located in Niles, but this is still a fantastic store. It also has fresh produce, some hard to find Asian ingredients at great prices. Fresh seafood, meats and a wide variety of sauces etc. Much cheaper than places like Mitsuwa well, atleast for the ingredients I buy anyway. The only downside is, pass on items you can buy at other grocery stores like Jewel / Dominics / Food for Less because even charge double for Spam. read more

An aside to start--I have to L O L at y'all saying there are no better options. Yes there are, you just have to leave Naperville. anyhow. . . It's an H Mart! A big one! Tons of cheap produce and cuts of meat specifically for asian cooking. As is the case with most asian grocery stores (but not all--!), there is a certain stench that is impossible to ignore. I hate it that while walking through the produce there was some sticky unnamed dried substance on the floor that caused me to squeak through the entire store. Grosssssss. It's not perfect, but this H mart is near where I work, so I am glad-- I can't always make a 40 minute drive to Mitsuwa. I will shop for my asian-food items here, plus the vegetables, which actually ARE very cheap and decent in quality. They carry all kinds of soy sauce, carry 2 L bottles of Ito En, have great rice, fresh SUN NOODLES, and an unparalleled selection of ssamjang/gocujang. Pocky were not fresh, though. And again, it stinks. REALLY stinks. but... H-Mart'll do for the day. read more

We went for Udon noodles. We left with Udon noodles. Most of the stocks we looked at were incredibly heavy in MSG which I avoid like the plague. The fish section smelled so bad that I wanted to vomit. My most difficult part of this experience is that this is almost like the Chinatown of Naperville. The whole neighborhood is like mini-Asia. I was amazed that employees spoke English in the store. I can say that the boyfriend's BFF loves to pick up his sake here on a regular basis. I am not a sake kinda gal but if I wanted it by the case, I would probably go here. read more

Ok, more like, 3.5 stars because..... I was SOOOO excited to find a Super H about 20 mins from my house. Prior to moving out to Western Suburbia, I thought my only option was to travel north to Niles or Arlington Height (or the obvious Chinatown) to get my Asian grocery fix..but low and behold! Super H - YES....................... However - you smell!!! Upon entering, the smell just envelops your body and makes your knees weak...if you can bear it for 5 mins, you won't notice it any longer. The produce section and seafood section makes the trip worth it. Pretty packaged produce, nice selection of fresh and frozen fish - and great selection of beautifully sliced meats, marinated kalbi, bulgogi and kim chi. Of course, like the Niles location - wonderful options when it comes to dumplings - I heart dumplings! It was fun going there - I'll be back - maybe wearing a mask. read more

Hi - I've been to the Niles location and well, its much better. However, I'm not sure its worth the trek if you live out by Naperville. Loved the food I've eaten there twice, so I highly suggest it to anyone looking to try something different or feeling like eating asian. Very large asian grocery store. They have pretty much everything you need when it comes to traditional asian foods. I was checking out the rice cookers and they can range from the simple push button to LCD display with scheduled cooking and melodies. The fish selection is fairly large ranging from shell fish (conch, snails, etc) to live fish(stripe bass, crabs, eelsetc). They also have sashimi grade fish that you can purchase and eat right out of the package. The asian candy selection is fairly large. Asian fruits and vegatables are plentiful. If i lived closer to this place, id shop more frequently. read more

I bought seaweed paper yesterday from H Mart Naperville so I could make maki rolls and just realized today that it expired in November 2017! Disgusting! On previous trips I've also found expired cookies in the Indian section. Some agency needs to inspect this place. I'm a Korean adoptee and just began to explore my heritage last year. (Yeah 24's a bit late, but better late than never) Our school took the kids on a school field trip to the historical "city" when we passed by this H-Mart and sure enough I was on my way back the next day. Yeah, I agree with everyone else, this place smells like musty fish (Update: since they opened up the food court the smell is much MUCH better), but it's all good. I stuck to some safer options as this is my 1st Asian grocery outing. They have all sorts of yummy Laver, of which I chose the olive oil variety :-) The prices are not too bad, and I ended up with a weeks worth of lunch food and snacks for under $30. Oh yes, and also the distinct pleasure of eating Japanese Natto for the first time.......I should have passed **Update, make sure the packages you buy are CLOSED!! Last time a bag of brown rice I bought was leaking, and now my Korean crackers I just bought weren't fully sealed either. Also you neeeeeeed to check the expiration dates! The ppl here are nice but after going to the niles location I see how massive the difference is in the quality of product. Especially the produce department in terms of freshness. read more

Haha! I totally know that asian market smell that people have wrote about, but honestly the delicious smells of the free samples just waft right over it for me! All people (especially myself!) LOVE free samples! They always have great free samples here which makes me love this place even more. Before Hmart came in, the other Asian grocery store was smaller and had higher prices. Hmart has great prices especially on produce! Don't be afraid to come here if you're not Asian! I highly recommend coming here if you want to make Asian food (the ingredients will be WAYYY cheaper than any other grocery store). One great secret here are the sushi trays!! These are pretty nice variety trays for very cheap! These are great for a family dinner or for entertaining. Or just come and check it out for fun if you're feeling adventurous! They have a lot of pre-packaged Korean food as well if you want to try making bibimpbap at home or marinated Korean bbq. They also have great snacks and candy. Also, Korean ramen knocks the socks off American Ramen. That is all. read more

So being raised in a very Asian household and being dragged to Asian food stores in the city every other week or so- the fish smell while yuckie did not phase me as much as some other people....but let me tell you the smell is bad and unfortunately it hits you right when you walk in. As far as Asian food they have a lot of great options....and it is pretty big, which is nice. They have a lot of different options for rice, seaweed, TOFU everything, they have all kinds of sweet goodies from my childhood. They have a lot of convenience items as well that I do not remember from my childhood but as a single girl with mom pretty far away who doesn't get to cook as often as I would like I happily purchase these items that are pre-made that taste pretty close to mom's (nothing is ever good as homemade). Come out for a little visit....you at least leave with a few yummie snacks if not full blown groceries. :) read more

You get what you get and you don't throw a fit. I remember teaching my son that when he was a toddler and it worked, and so I guess I should just face that fact when I shop at Super H Mart. Because it is basically the only game in town, sadly, I shop here quite often to purchase Asian groceries. I always come with a grocery list in mind so that I do not make additional off-track purchases as this place can be very expensive. Some produce is much cheaper across town at grocers such as Caputos & Garden Fresh, and so when I am nearby to those locations I shop there. I do like however their wide selection of seafood and cuts of meat. One big disappointment is that H Mart used to stock a soup base for Bun Rieu, a special Vietnamese soup. However they stopped stocking it and so I went to customer service to see if they would re-order it. I came prepared & showed them a photo of the jar on my phone, they put it on their copier and made a copy of it, and told me that the manager would be in later that day and someone would call to let me know. Waiting....waiting....waiting..........w.a.i.t.i.n.g. It's been more than a day, more than 10 days, in fact more than 100 days. I'm so over it. Yes I still shop here as I said, it's the only game in town, but I keep it to a minimum and hopefully some other reasonably priced grocer will step in to fill the void. read more

The odd thing about Naperville is that despite our 12-13% asian population via demographics, we are still in the "take what you can get" stage when it comes to anything asian. Before, it was trekking out to Diho market for asian goods. Then came the Super Asia near Naper/Ogden. Now comes H-mart. Don't get me wrong, it's better than Diho/Whole Grain and Super Asia, but it ain't no 99 Ranch (but that's unfair, isn't it?), and from what i hear, it isn't as big as the H-mart in Niles. It's got the best selection of Asian foods in the area, although you'd have to consult my wife if you wanted to know how the price compares. Maybe this bumps to a 4 star once the food court goes live who-knows-when. read more

SELLING EXPIRED ITEMS! BAD PLACE TO GO FOR GROCERIES! DO NOT go to this store they are leaving on items that are expired for TWO MONTHS on the shelf!! My family and I have been a regular customer of H Mart because they sell food that reminds of home. But until today we no longer trust them anymore! Now we regret not checking on the packaging for the sell by date because we could not have imagined that they are still selling food expired for TWO MONTHS! We smelled something funky once we opened the package and saw MOLDS on the fish cakes! People can easily get food poisoned from consuming the ROTTENED STUFF, which makes me feel disgusted to my stomach! So not a single H Mart worker has checked on the freshness of their food for months? I believe this is not the first time it has happened, but the issue is still left unsolved. Finally made it in here, their Grand Opening week was crazy (reminded me of groceries in Mexico that had speakers blarring with music outside), so I didn't make it in for a while. A friend convinced me we should stop in. Surprising mix of items, small deep freezers, giant (think big enough to fit three babies in) stainless steel mixing bowls, and everything in between. They have a large selection of unique frozen goods but by far the best bet were the Asian Pears (I adore these). Usually $1.99 each at other locations you got a sealed three pack for $4 - these pears were huge - size of a softball and absolultely drip down your elbow sweet and delicious. Couldn't stand the smell of the dried fish in the dried aisle, but I will just shop around it. read more

Super H Mart for the win! The produce here cannot be beat by the local grocers, in price and quality. The fish is amazingly fresh. Go up and smell the shrimp, I dare you. What do you smell? That's right. OCEAN! WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO SMELL LIKE! Look at the fish, they have clear eyes and the flesh is firm. The only thing I saw that looked past its prime were the mussels (they wouldn't close after pinching them shut). On Sunday they take out the kimchee vats and the whole store will smell like kimchee. On Saturday they have out all sorts of weird Asian food samples. I like the Niles store more because they have the little shops, like the sushi shop and the bakery -- but they should be opening up the shops at this location soon! read more

Out of the options you get in Chicagoland, I guess this is the best. I'm not crazy about the layout. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. They will put certain items in two sections. Then they have soba noodles in one section but soba noodle sauce all the way across the store. However, it's usually cheaper than the other stores. I like the food court at Assi better. read more

This place has everything for your Asian-oriental cravings! I go, mainly, for there tofu. Great price and the exact brand I always love! Staff is always helpful and prompt, and they always have free samples of new food items as soon as you walk in every time my husband and I shop there. This is the place where you buy your Ramune bliss. Many different flavors in every style. From regular to Hello Kitty flavor, which I'm assuming is a strawberry blend? There fresh fish is ALWAYS fresh. You could even smell the ocean as you stride on by the seafood counter, but in a good way. Right from the ocean onto your dinner plate! I shouldn't have been so excited to check out a supermarket when I came to visit the Chicago suburbs but I was. We'll be moving into the area at the end of this month and where I live now doesn't have any kind of Asian supermarket so I was looking forward to being able to use some quality ingredients I couldn't find elsewhere. This is a great place to get your Korean fix if you're here to eat or just need some ingredients. This location is very big compared to the one in Schaumburg. They have samples here that you can taste and there is a food court that you can eat at as well. The place is clean and has a large variety of meats/produce/Asian products to select from. However the only reason why this place isn't a 5 star is because of the price. H Mart does indeed have sales that are good, however the majority of the goods are a bit higher priced than what I'm use to from Asian supermarkets. read more

I have eaten in this relatively new food court several times. It isn't bad, and it isn't great either. The different stands aren't always openned and the food quality lacks consistancy. I do recommend the bi bim bop from the Korean stand. The prices are decent, but not a steal! read more

The last time I was bumped into as many times in a 20 minute period was when I was playing rugby (our concepts of personal space are vastly different). Additionally, I haven't experienced such a language barrier since I tried to solve a problem with my paypal account and spent 15 minutes futilely speaking to a customer service representative who could optimistically classify english as a third or fourth language. But if you're searching for authentic asian stuff, this is the place baby! I love the pre-sliced ribeye. It's perfect for such dishes as beef and broccoli, and it's down right cheap. The same can be said of the pre-sliced pork. It's the perfect thickness for hot and sour soup. Of course, you can find every asian sauce, paste, extract, and juice known to man, and the selection of produce is about the same as you find in Beijing. My only complaint: where are the wood ear mushrooms Mr. H? read more

I -finally- made my way to Naperville to go to H Mart with my younger sister. I'm quite the fan of.. uh Korean things and such so yeah. My sister is quite picky with food and the moment we walked in we got hit with the smell of fish. My sister's face was seriously like "oh my god I want to die" The aisles run small, but the customers I ran into were nice and everyone was polite. The staff there were awesome :D. Like I said, my sister is totally picky with food, but one of the ladies working a sample table totally convinced my sister into trying stuff like the Seaweed Salad and Kimchi (mmmm!) The prices were great and my sister has new candy ideas at the candy store she works at ;) We're totally going back there! Woohoo! read more

One of my favorite Korean Supermarket. The seafood is priced reasonably. We keep buying fresh lobsters from these guys. They cost $10/lb and we love buying their REAL jumbo lump crab meat for $14! The seafood dumplings are also cheap and delicious. I love the Korean snacks... half the time I don't even know what they are because they're in Korean and I don't speak the language but when I get home I keep finding these delicious treasures for my fam. Not to mention, their selection of kobe beef is not only high quality but very affordable. Highly Highly Highly recommend this place for your grocery needs. read more

This place is kind of gross if you think about it too hard. Yes, it has a bad smell that all Asian supermarkets have. You'll get used to it after like 5-6 minutes so no biggie. But seriously, where does the smell come from? Also, it has a few "self service" areas for live seafood. Like a bin full of live crabs or shrimp for the pickins. IDK about you, but I prefer my shellfish to not have the concerns of "shopper germs" on top of the "do these fish have hella disease or what?" concerns. I mean, we are in Illinois - this state is pretty much landlocked, save for a lake whose beaches get closed for high levels of waste and other tasty stuff on a regular basis. Anyhow, this place really is the local hotspot for all things Asian grocery-related. I get my kimchi, frozen pot stickers, oyster sauce, etc. here. I actually get my mochi balls at Trader Joe's because they are cheaper there. Shhhhh! Don't get me started on the food court. The fam loves the Japanese place with the chicken katsu platter. Chicken, California rolls, miso soup? Forget about it. Even the 5 year old can't stop talking about eating at H-Mart. Plus he loves their kick ass toy vending machines. read more

My impressions: Produce - There is a HUGE selection of fresh fruit, good prices, and what seemed to be high quality. The old deli section from Dominick's has been converted into a fresh kimchi / pickled veggie area. Live Fish Tanks - the selections on both days included dungeness crab, lobster, tilapia, striped bass, and fresh water eel. Huge, wonderfully fresh tuna carcasses were broken down right at the counter. Additionally, the fish selection now takes up all but about 30 ft of the rear of the store. Selections include: skate wing, cod, monkfish, salmon, mackerel, sole, halibut, and snapper all prepped to your liking. Meat selections aren't as numerous. Beef is available in many cuts, as is pork, but chicken is only available in a few ways (whole, feet, boneless skinless breasts). All beef is labeled as choice, and the short ribs were outstanding. The aisles are where the fun really began. So many ingredients, so little time. The selection is pretty entertaining. Imagine a wall of Ragu pasta sauce sitting directly across from the soba noodle selection. The frozen food section was the most daunting because of the 9-10 tasting sections, each causing a traffic pile-up the likes only known previously to the travelers of the Hillside strangler. Overall, I can't wait to return. The prices and selection, especially for seafood, are fantastic. read more

I've never been to an H-Mart because I'm not sure if there is even H-Mart in California, it's a Korean market and the prices were decent. Soon to open in Naperville at the old location of the Dominick's in the Iroquois strip mall by Ogden and Naper Blvd. Asian/Korean specialty grocer. UPDATE 2/1/10 They now have a housewares section in the adjacent property they acquired and merged (the old Walgreens). There's a Bini Bakery on premises in the food court in this new area. There's slots for multiple food vendors but these are still to be filled. This looks very promising! Great local alternative if stocking up on Korean foods and a drive to Mitsuwa (Japanese foods) in Arlington Heights is too long. UPDATE 09/28/07 Finally got a chance to make my way here on my way home from work. Wow what fun, I couldn't stop grinning in pure joy! They even sell bento boxes (I heart bento). Very fresh and nice produce at excellent prices. Amazing asian dry goods and huge meat section. Three aisles of frozen goods that include mochi, cake rolls, daifuku, etc. (I did spot some korean an pan in the freezer behind this section so I went for it! LOL and yum!) . I noticed that preserved duck eggs cartons were neatly stored away under many of the produce bins. The nearby miniature organic cold case is cute, and gets a silver star. Deli section includes a variety of premade dishes in convenient plastic boxes -- beware that not all ingredients are listed on ingredients/price sticker, so picky or special diet customers may want to ask an attendant before purchasing--case in point, I bought a stir fry vermicelli dish that apparently neglected to mention the beef so I had to toss it. The beverage aisle included all my old favorite and hard-to-find coffee cans, as well as canned teas by Itoen and others, and the usual hello kitty calpicos. It seemed as if everywhere I turned there was jarred kimchee. Amazing sashimi and sushi grade fish in the meats section. Amazing selection of appliances such as hibachis, rice cookers (the really nice ones and so many to choose!), etc. Very nice kitchen accessories and acroutements. H Mart is like a very clean and expanded version of the Chinatown markets - but Korean - so of course I like it. The Niles location is much bigger, but the Naperville location is still pretty damn good. I don't come on weekends, because it's packed. However, that's where all the samples are at! Where else can you get seafood samples with some guy yelling through a megaphone? Large produce and seafood selection, lots of cool borosilicate glass contains for food, LOTS of snacks, large pickle selection...can't ask for much more. I like how they do sell some Western groceries so you can do one-stop shopping. Wish they could stock more Asian skincare/cosmetic stuff, but that's me. However, they do sell some black charcoal nose strips for eight bucks, which is a steal compared to the Boscia strips at Sephora. And they're black for the goth in you! Thumbs up for offering a wide variety of foods and the food court, thumbs down for crap service and driving out mom n' pop operation. read more

This is one of the few large scale Asian grocery stores in the area. Having grown up in the Bay Area, this one pales in comparison to the Lion City's, the Ranch 99's, the Marina's, but it still has a good diverse amount of food for the full gamut of Asian food (though mainly Korean and Chinese). The beef and seafood always seems fairly fresh and clean. The aisles and lanes are kept clean and there is a lot of space to maneuver. The produce section always has a good stock of fruits and vegetables and they always seem really fresh. It's not as big as the one in Niles and if I do have one complaint about this store, it's that the lines are always long, but it is the main source of groceries for a lot of family so I don't know if that can be helped. Also, the rewards card that you can apply for is a 1% return on $1,000 meaning you get $10 back once you hit $1,000. I think that's pretty cheap based off my experience in Bay Area grocery stores.
