If Yelp allowed for six stars, I'd have no hesitation awarding them to Dr. Ho and H Optics. For the past few years, Dr. Ho has straightened out everything from dry contacts to itchy eyes to severe allergies. He always seems to understand my problems, even if I can't articulate them, and will keep working until the problem is solved. He'll always explain what's happening, pointing out every detail - to the extent that I could probably pass an optometry entrance exam. His knowledge is unquestioned, but it's his way of explaining it that sets him apart. Dr. Ho also makes sure to take his time with patients. I've always felt like I was the only person in the office. He remembers my problems without having to look at his chart, which is impressive for a New York doctor of any kind. Plus, he's a cool guy. Certainly not essential in quality care, but a nice bonus. Bottom line: Dr. Ho's the man. Do yourself (and your eyes) a favor and go here next time. read more

I can't imagine a better eye doctor experience than this. I came a little early to try on frames; the girl at the desk was supercute and supernice; helpful, helped me try on almost every frame in the store, while keeping track of my favorites for me, and without pressuring me at all to buy. Their selection of frames was small but well edited; a bit of something for everyone. I found a pair of cute Thakoons that I would have bought had they come in tortoise (or any color but black) and had they been about $100 cheaper; but at least I know what I'm looking for now! (Moscot...) Dr. Ho could not have been nicer and really made me feel comfortable. He even executed the dreaded air-blast test with a minimum of eye-watering and flinching from me. The girl at the front desk fully took care of clearing all my Insurance info ahead time, so grabbing my prescriptions and checking out was a breeze. Insurance allowing, I see no reason to ever go anywhere else. As soon as I find the right frames, I'll be back to H-Optics to get my lense prescription filled. They were so nice and helpful as I tried on almost every pair of glasses and it was just such a positive experience. Is it possible for someone to be passionate about optometry? If so, Dr. Ho definitely has it. I'm blind as a bat and wear contacts all the time, and he was absolutely fantastic. He is efficient, explains everything what he's doing, and is very personable. It's definitely worth taking the trip over to the LES. I've been wearing the same contacts for years, and he explained to me how they were not longer beneficial for my eyes. In order to find me other contacts that were also comfortable, he even looked up the material for my current contacts and tried to match it with new ones that were better for my eyes. I used to live directly next to H Optics and went to Dr. Ho several times with various eye issues. He was extremely professional, nice, and thorough -- all qualities you'd hope for in an optometrist. I wear contacts and suffer from dry eyes, so he would explain what was happening and different plans of attack. He always seemed insightful and passionate about eye health. Appointments never felt rushed and I usually left with an array of products and samples to try out. Dr. Ho is a super thorough and attentive Optometrist - actually hands down one of my favorite doctors. Caveat: I like my doctors to wear their knowledge on their sleeve, others may not. You can tell he really knows his craft and trade. An example: I walked in with a pair of glasses that had a prism in my first visit. He informed me that this was actually unnecessary - and potentially counter productive for my eyes. I've been doing just fine without one since. He's also great with first time contacts wearers, understanding that contacts are equally or more about fit and comfort than merely prescription. Lastly, their eyewear selection in the front is outstanding!! A really great range of styles and brands, including some rarer ones. The office staff are also super patient but laid back which make this a less threatening place to shop for frames than others. Dr. Ho is phenomenal. I visited him to get my first pair of contacts ever. At 25, this was a little intimiating, but he walked me through the process and taught me many helpful tips that made the transition from glasses to contacts seamless. He was very patient, kind and funny. I highly recommend him - - even if you're already happy with your current optometrist, you should probably just go ahead and switch on over to him. I totally agree with the previous reviews. I visited H Optics this past November for my annual eye exam. At the time I had been having problems with dry eyes and had to continuously change my contacts lens, which was becoming very costly. Dr. Ho was great! I have been using corrective lens for over 15 years, and have never had things explained so thoroughly. Price of initial exam and followup was $85 (w/o insurance). I will be back to update my glasses, as they seem to have a decent selection. Cute office and easily accessible by F and JMZ trains. Receptionist was also very helpful and friendly. My first visit to Dr. H was out of necessity- I work in LES, and my eye was completely swollen shut. Dr. H hooked it up. He performed an extremely thorough exam and was professional and courteous to boot. My insurance wasn't accepted, so I had to pay out of pocket. Dr. H saw me for follow ups as necessary, at no extra cost. Needless too say, I switched insurances just so I can come here and keep Dr. H as my regular optometrist. read more

This business is one of the reasons why I finally signed up on Yelp to write reviews. Dr. Ho is GREAT! The glasses and contact exam were carefully executed, and very thorough! My eyes are dry and I have a lot of difficulties wearing contacts. In fact, I've tried 3 different kinds of contacts already and they are still not working out. I keep coming back to try to find new contacts that fit and are comfortable, but Dr. Ho and his office are so nice about it! Dr. Ho was incredibly thorough, patient, and responsive during my eye exam. He answered all of my questions in an easy to understand way and explained my vision in great, albeit not totally necessary, detail. When it came time to choose my frames, the ladies at the desk were very helpful and offered their opinion, suggestions, and advice. They also take VSP, which made the check out process super simple! This was my first visit here after finding Dr Ho through Yelp, and I have to say my first impression of my visit was wonderful. I decided to switch doctors this year, and am always hesitant about what to expect, as I am sensitive about my vision. What I really liked about Dr Ho and which made him significantly different from other optometrists I have experienced, was that he was incredibly warm, personable and genuinely interested in helping me understand the condition of my vision. He spent the time to essentially explain the mechanics and biology of a specific new issue that cropped up for me in the last year, and what I can do to correct it. I loved that! It really helped make sense of what was going on in a very pragmatic and helpful fashion. And I was never rushed! It made me comfortable to have a dialogue with him about concerns and thoughts about my vision, and his depth of knowledge instilled a sense of trust. Though some yelpers are complaining about his fees, I feel that if your vision is incredibly important to you as it is to me, especially in my line of work, it is more than worth it. He spends a significant amount of time with you to make sure he has the right prescription, lenses and protocol for your specific condition. I would definitely recommend Dr Ho of H Optics. Now, I wish I could find a primary care physician with as friendly, patient and helpful a disposition! ___________________________________ If you care at all about my history with optometrists, I am blind as a bat, and I generally hate going because the residual feeling from terrible experiences long past where they feel the need to gasp about my prescription. I cannot speak highly enough about H Optics and the amazing service I've received! Last year, I got the news that I needed bi-focals...ugh. Up until then, I wore contacts almost all the time. When I went to Lens Crafters at 150 5th Ave, the very un-helpful optometrist told me in a condescending way that since the two pairs I'd tried didn't work, I'd have to wear glasses from here on out. End of story. Lens Crafters also were typical of a lot of the chains in that they are intentionally unclear about the cost and what your real choices are and you get saddled with a lot more than you'd have expected when you get to the cash register. Not so at H Optics. Not only did I get to try 3 different pairs of contacts, two of which worked for my eyes (and got a careful explanation about the multiple types and options available), but I got a great pair of frames that fit my narrow face perfectly. Throughout the entire process, all costs and options were carefully explained, and they honored my vision insurance. When I walked out with the bi-focal contacts that corrected my vision, it was a whole new visual world! I can honestly say I have never had such great service at any eyecare vendor, and I've been wearing glasses and contacts for 35 years! Give these folks your business...they bend over backwards to do all they can to make sure that you have a great experience, and obviously love what they do. read more

When I first arrived, the receptionist made me feel comfortable there, and the assistant was great. Also, the doctor (Dr. Ho) was very patient with me as a patient explaining everything, to me and with my questions. I write with my pupils dilated, so you know this review is fresh! Modern atmosphere, friendly reception. The highlight of your visit will be Dr. H. He is very energetic and informative. It keeps the process entertaining and helps you follow along. Dr. H really tries to get to the heart of the matter. In my case, I was having headaches and he kept asking again and again about anything that may have changed recently as a potential cause. He really wanted to help, which is the most you can ask of any doctor. Dr. H went, in my opinion, above and beyond a routine eye exam. He listened to my complaint and double checked everything. I showed him a few of my previous prescriptions. Dr. H put the puzzle together rather quickly and came up with a brilliant diagnosis, which will hopefully save me from this headache problem. Great eye doctor--extremely knowledgeable about contact lens products for dry eye--turns out I was using the wrong contact lens that was drying out my eye and not optimizing oxygen/moisture--there was a better product on the market-- my old eye doctor knew nothing about. Let me begin by saying, if I could change anything about myself it would be my eyes. I dread contacts, but have been using them for 10+ years. Dr. Ho and the H Optics office have been so nice to me since Day1! I don't have insurance and did my diligence on eye exams around the LES area. I was initially told to go to Cohens which was the worst idea ever! Do you want Payless style treatment for your eyes?! Absolutely NOT! H Optics is located on one of the cutest blocks in the LES. Their office is adorable and up to date on technology (i always judge on aesthetics -- I'm a designer I cant help it). The rooms are comfortable and the screen you read from afar is a MAC screen and I am definitely an apple whore! I'm from CA and believe in customer service. Unlike most Drs. in NYC I NEVER EVER have a problem getting the appointment I want and unfortunate for them I'm a libra who constantly changes my schedule, but they always accommodate me. Dr. Ho is as funny and sweet as every other review has mentioned. He is VERY knowledgeable and is thorough in his explanations. Every Libra knows we need an explanation for everything. I paid $85 which includes trial lenses (note plural). He is working with me to get the perfect set of lenses that will help correct my imperfection. Vision is everything to someone and Dr. Ho understands that! BONUS, this office is located right next to one of my favorite hidden gems, Spur Tree an organic Jamaican bar and lounge! Please do not hesitate to go here! UPDATE: My initial review was 5 stars however my prescription doesn't feel right. He initially lowered my prescription and that has never happened. I communicated this and then he wrote a final prescription for me and I never was given a trial pair to confirm this was Ok. I thought everything woud be OK, but I am uncomfortable and it's been over a month and I've already ordered a year supply of contacts from the best vendor btw, (1-800 contacts) who is ALWAYS forgiving and understanding. Back to H Optics -- I don't think my prescription is right. I'm constantly adjusting, rubbing my eyes, squinting and I'm in my 20s! I tried H Optics after searching through reviews on Yelp and came to the conclusion that... I love Dr. H! (and his lovely female receptionist of unknown name) I went to see him for the first time today after finding myself left with only a 7 day supply of contact lenses. I know, big problem. Anyways, I called in the morning to find out about the pricing for an exam, which was a great deal ($85), and had the pleasure of speaking to a genuinely cheerful and informative receptionist. I had a question about my insurance coverage, so I gave her my card information over the phone and she had everything worked out by the time that I arrived that evening for an appointment! Note: I tried the same thing at Cohen's Optical and they informed me that I had no vision plan. The check-in process was easy and lighthearted. I was able to see Dr. H exactly on time. He was so courteous, knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and even had a sense of humor! I am usually distrustful of doctors, but Dr. H definitely knew what he was doing. I was here a little over a year ago (I'm a bit overdue for an eye exam which is probably why this review has been on my mind) and I had one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had at in an eye doctor's office. I was on the hunt for some new frames. People were telling me, "You look like the dude from Heroes!" too much. I couldn't take it anymore. I was down in LES and walked by and poked my head in and grabbed a card. Told em that I'd be back. Well it took me 2 months to get back in, but as soon as I walked in Clinton recognized me and remembered that I told em I'd be back. He's a cool dude that explains everything that he is doing, and never tries to talk over you. He has got all the fancy smancy equipment there to do all your testing. Their frames are mostly Euro Style stuff, but what i love the most is that he has acetate frames that have nose pads. I have a small nose, so when I wear plastic frames my eyelashes touch the lenses because there are no nose pads. He hooked me up with some frames that I had been searching everywhere for. Dr Ho went over my vision history and suggested what he thought was a good prescription (negotiable). The examination [visual acuity test & phoropter] went by quickly. He explained the different kind of machines [applanation tonometry air pressure test, autorefractor] used to aid the vision data. Paying for bad vision and tuition out-of-pocket is harsh reality with work-study. Need a job! The glasses may be reasonable to buy in store or purchase directly from the designer itself. This guy is the shit! Not only is he knowledgeable and passionate about all things related to your eyes but he's also funny! He applies everything you do and say to the eyes. He takes his time and explains in depth what he's doing and why. I got a full tutorial on the retina and how it's related to your health. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol he can see it in your retina! I learned a few things today that I didn't know which will help me take better care of my eyes. I have been a patient here since 2009 and will not be going back because of an extremely negative experience with the front desk. The women who work here are rude and inattentive. I left two voice mails this week and sent an email, but never received a response. When I called again today, the woman at the front desk was rude and said that they never received any messages. Yet they somehow had my new last name (which is not the same as the name on my insurance), which I only changed in August 2012. (I haven't seen them for an appointment since October 2011.) After hanging up with the first woman, the office manager then called me back, insisting that there was a problem with my insurance and then telling me I was absolutely wrong when I told her how to rectify it. I have a somewhat complicated insurance situation and I seek out doctor's offices that will be patient and understanding of it. Dr. Ho's office failed that test today. When I told her that I wanted to cancel the appointment and let Dr. Ho know that I won't be returning because of their bad attitude, she told me, "Well, I'm sorry that you feel that way," still with her condescending tone. I work in customer service and have worked in front desk positions, and I was floored by this experience. (My boss, who also has a customer service background, overheard the phone call and said that it was unbelievable.) The office manager failed on two counts: first, she failed to check messages and emails, and then she was dismissive toward me. Dr. Ho has always been great, very friendly, knowledgable, and thorough, which was why I continued to try to book even after receiving no response from his staff.
