Here's the thing about Hanoi. It just opened. The servers are nice. They explain things very straight-forward "What is skewer fish tofu?" ""It's tofu. On a skewer. Tastes like fish. Very good" It was, in fact, very good - one of the best dishes I had there. Unfortunately, there's a lot holding Hanoi back at this early stage in its birth: 1. what seems like an IT guy who was on computer but not totally helping folks that came in 2. Confusing order system, "what did you order again?" she asked as she brought another dish 3. Food is very, very sweet. Thai iced tea? VERY sweet. Peanut sauce with skewer fish tofu? sweet. Caramelized fish hot pot? sweet. Yes, these are all dishes with sugar, but they are all VERY sweet. 4. Metal chopsticks. Please rid yourselves of them ASAP. The children drop them. and drop them. and drop them (and you're probably not going to be able to get rid of the children in this hood any time soon) 5. Food lacked the general freshness and taste of Vietnamese food - Vietnamese crepe smelled good, but tasted stale. Bun looked terrible - it had (literally) 3 small mint leaves - usually the noodles in this dish are obscured by the heaps of herbs. not here. I'm willing to try it again if they get it together and there isn't a guy tapping his food so relentlessly behind me my chair shakes, but for now, head to Hanco's to get banh mi. read more

First time eating here. Skip the spring roll. The veggie spring roll was a waste of money and utterly disappointing. Just chives (2pieces), a tiny piece of lonely cucumber lost in a sea of vermicelli noodles, and a piece of lettuce accompanied by lackluster "peanut" sauce. Go straight for the pho. It was delicious! The broth: light, flavorful and delightful. The pho with grilled chicken had the right amount of lemongrass flavor which added to the broth. The pho with fish balls were great too, the fish balls were delicious. The service was nice. Would return for the pho and try another appetizer. read more

I was so excited to have a non-banh mi Vietnamese joint in the nabe. Unfortunately, our visit to Hanoi was less than stellar. I had the tofu vermicelli and it was utterly and completely flavorless. Now, I'm sure many of you are saying that tofu and flavor don't exactly go hand-in-hand, but I've had some kick ass veggie vermicelli in Seattle. This stuff was like eating... well, plain tofu and plain noodles with nothing added. No spice, no sauce, no flavor. Not even a liberal dousing with Sriracha could save this dish. Husband had pork vermicelli, which was better, but still majorly lacking in the amount of sauce added. The bottom of the bowl was nearly dry, which is a big no-no in my book. Still, when he was done, I poured what little juice was left onto my bowl and it was barely edible. Disappointed! read more

This restaurant JUST opened. Friday night they were packed with curious Park Slopers looking to try out a new place. The food we had was tasty- chicken curry casserole and beef rolls with rice vermicelli. Salads and bubble tea were also good. I will definitely go back to try more of the menu. The staff was very nice and prices were right - our entrees were about $9/each. However, the staff was seriously overwhelmed. Orders were mixed up, wait times were long, the line for a table was long. So, bring a book! Here's hoping they will settle in and this will become a reliable fixture in the neighborhood. read more

Zero stars!!! This is what I get for a $9 bowl of pho: very little noodles, tons of broth, 2-3 pieces of very chewy tough beef, old lime wedges, and a tiny tiny plate of bean sprouts w/ water spilling out of the plate. Hanco's puts this place to shame. Hands down! Hanco's has way better pho, sandwiches, and service. The decor at Ha Noi is cute, but what a waste for such Terrible food! Not to mention this place is over priced for Vietnamese food. If it wasn't because of convenience, I rather eat in Manhattan or Brooklyn Chinatown. I love Phos and so does my boyfriend. We used to live in Park Slope and discovered this place 2 years ago. We would go regularly. We moved since and decided to go last Saturday. The usual waiter is no longer there and the service was extremely poor. We had to wait a min. of 25 min before being attended. We got to order our Phos and right when we started eating...a WATER BUG appeared right next to our table, running on the floor of the restaurant!!! We were so freaked out. People started leaving immediately. One of the waiters came by and started laughing. He then crushed the WATER BUG right next to our table, and DIDN'T EVEN APOLOGIZE! He blamed it on the "constructions upstairs..."...REALLY NOW? We were so upset that we decided to leave and not even finish our Phos which we had barely tried. We had to ask for the check no less than 3 TIMES and had to wait another 25 min! That same waiter didn't end up giving us our check, even though we kept on asking him... They charged us FULL RATE as well, didn't even bother giving us a discount. It was a very disappointing experience. I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. STAND AWAY. read more

Not at all sensitive to allergy requests, generally bland food, the fish tofu skewers however were not bland, but revolting. Service was nice enough, but a bit confused, our meals did not arrive together, also some missing sauces. Tofu (in different meal- vermicelli tofu and vegetables) was cold and spongy, included only bland noodles and lettuce. Other items mostly non-memorable. Biggest complaint really the non-paying attention to allergy requests (onions/scallions and respective oils) I have been to many vietnamese restaurants in NYC, DC, SF, etc. And know that it is perfectly possible to prepare these meals well and without the ingredients requested. Just stopped in to check out this new place. It was excellent. The restaurant is small and intimate. The menu has a lot on it and is very reasonably priced. The soups are HUGE. Get the small, unless you want to eat soup out of a bucket. The food was tasty, the service was great, and the employees were incredibly friendly. I'm from the west coast where pho was a weekly staple for me. One can imagine my dismay when moving to NYC and having so much difficulty finding a good pho place, which is why I was so f-ing stoked when I discovered this place! The pho here is the real deal: great broth, well cooked noodles, and well portioned meats. I would say this pho is definitely on par and better than places on the west coast. The banh mi sandwiches are also very good. However, my one complaint (and the reason I'm giving only 4 stars and not 5) is that when my wife and I stopped by to order their banh mi sandwiches to go for the first time the other day, it literally took 30 minutes just to make 2 standard grilled chicken sandwiches. To give you an idea how long it took, a mother and her child arrived at the restaurant after us, ordered 2 rice dishes, got their food, and finished it all while we waited for our take-out order. The saving grace was that the sandwiches themselves were very good. However, I was a bit disappointed they didn't have more meat in them. This is in comparison with Lotus, which sits a few blocks down on 5th Ave. Overall, the food here is very, very good, despite my long wait experience. I would like to see this place stick around Park Slope for a long time and hopefully they're usually better about making their sandwiches! read more

Alright, so I'm going to go with 3 stars for this one, and leaning towards 2. I'll give the extra star for the friendly service. I said in a previous review that it compares with Hanco's. I regret that after my Banh Mi ($6) today I'd have to lean back towards Hanco's. The bread for the Banh Mi at Ha Noi was chewy from reheating - not the crisp warm bread you get across the street. Not horrible, but I know I can do better elsewhere. The bag for the sandwich was labeled "tofu," which was unappetizing for me. How long was it sitting in that bag? The ingredients were also sparse compared to Hanco's. Across the street there's more of a medley of shredded vegetables on the sandwich. Vegetable spring rolls ($4) weren't especially flavorful. Came here for dinner on Saturday night and thought the food was just okay. I've eaten at many of the Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown and have spent 3 weeks in that country so I know my Vietnamese food. My friend and I had the pork spring rolls and the crepe as apps and then each ordered a bowl of pho. The spring rolls were pretty good, nothing extraordinary, but the crepe did nothing for me. It lacked flavor and I had to put lots of hot sauce and the dipping sauce it comes with on it to give it flavor. As for the pho, it also lacked flavor. The broth was kind of bland and did not have the same strong aromas as the phos I have had in Chinatown. None of the foods we ordered stood out and each dish costs about 50% more than what the Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown charge. I doubt I will be back. If I want a cheaper Vietnamese fix in Park Slope I will just head to Hanco down the street. read more

We were in Brooklyn for 2 weeks recently for my son's college graduation and had the great experience of dining in and ordering take out from Hanoi. We are from San Jose CA where there is a huge Vietnamese community so we now our Vietnamese food! We heard Hanoi was the new kid on the block and were excited to see a Vietnamese restaurant that we had to try it. All the food we ordered during our 4 visits was fresh, hot and tasty. We had noodle stir fry plates, summer rolls, spring rolls, banh mi, refreshing mango lemonade and pho. The BEST thing about Hanoi is the service! Everyone is so pleasant, so welcoming, so hospitable. The restaurant is clean and cool...much appreciated during the several days of hot and humid weather. I don't know if we'll ever be back to Park Slope but, we wish Hanoi much success. Local Vietnamese place in Brooklyn. We ordered 2 new things tonight. Caramel salmon and curry chicken pho. I would have to say they were both quite disappointing. The salmon was ok. It was in some brown flavorless sauce with a lot of onions. My curry chicken was edible. There was an ingredient in it that made it taste kinda of funny. This place makes really good viet sandwiches, spring rolls and noodles and good pho. I would stick to these 3 items. There ice coffee is fantastic too read more

I'm really surprised by all of the negative reviews. Having spent a lot of time in Southeast Asia, I found the flavors to be very authentic. The casserole is delicious, the papaya salad is fresh, the curry tastes just right. I've probably been to this place 10 times since they opened and I've never had a bad meal there. Ha Noi is a solid restaurant. I live in the neighborhood and have eaten here many times. Their appetizers are delicious and fresh-tasting. Of their extensive menu, I particularly like their pho, cold vermicelli noodles, and sandwiches. The only dish I have had there that I felt left something to be desired was their fried rice, but--to be fair--I ordered the rice takeout just as the kitchen was closing at 10:30 PM, and they were kind enough to to make order (it's possible the rice may have been better had I ordered it as they were not rushing to close). read more
