I also tried their burgers and found them to be a bit soggy, but otherwise tasty and cheaper than a comparison like Shake Shack. Got the Spicy Chicken Sandwich; I've been trying out most places' versions of this delicious type of sandwich and The Habit's wasn't bad! It was a bit dry, so I ditched the brioche bun, but otherwise it was a decent portion of tasty chicken. And with sweet potato fries on the side, it was a delightful meal. This spot's prized items come in two word pairs: Onion rings. French fries. Char burger. Milk shake. With all the fast food options that could have been in the limited spaces in IV, I wouldn't be dying for it to be The Habit. However, I recall the handful of times that The Habit saved me from late night study sessions, munchies, drunchies, and cravings for a good burger when In-N-Out was too far away. The crown jewel of The Habit is its onion rings, and I really enjoy how their fries are thick enough so that they're not totally crisp; they're the perfect vehicles for ranch. Speaking of ranch, it's not your typical Hidden Valley ranch; it's not as good as Wingstop ranch (which we desperately need in the SB area), but it's great, creamy fast food ranch that goes well with American grub. The area was always packed in the afternoon after classes, and in the late evening when people were pregaming (before COVID, of course). The service is usually okay and the wait is never super long. There was a self-service area with sauces and peppers (my favorite!). Also, jalapenos! And they have balsamic vinegar, which I don't see too often at fast food joints. Came in on Friday and ordered a double char NO CHEESE, since they always ask if you want cheese on that when you didn't ask for it with cheese... we'll the guy rings me up and it's $8.50 when the menu says $6.99. I tell him he made a mistake and he asks his neighbor cashier and he says the menu prices haven't been updated... so I pay the $8.50 and then when I get my order it has cheese on it! So he charged for something I didn't order and they gave me something I didn't order... why don't I ever get a combo meal when I ask for a water cup? Apparently I'm on a quest to become Yelp's Princess of IV because I've spent much of 2019 trying to visit places near campus that I haven't yet tried. And I know, I hadn't been to the Habit - KILL ME. But actually don't because then I would never get to taste their perfectly fried onion rings and their juicy burgers again. Truthfully, I really did enjoy the Habit and I can see why it is such a staple. It's easy to think, well what's so special about a burger and fries, but places like The Habit exist to prove you wrong. This Habit is incredibly efficient - a necessity for hungry students - and I received my order within 5 minutes of placing it. The only issue is that they share seating outside with Subway and Starbucks, so at times it can be difficult to find somewhere to sit. The Habit Burger is a classic burger joint, and this one did not disappoint. Conveniently located right next to UC Santa Barbara, it's usually packed with local college students. I loved the fact that it was an open entrance joint that only had outdoor seating - the ambiance was exciting and lively for a Sunday afternoon. Of all possible burger joints in I.V., the Habit is indeed the best. Most people don't know that this is the almost-OG Habit, and are still franchised, so they don't accept coupons from the statewide chain. The original Habit was located just across the street, where South Coast Deli now stands, but it seems like many things haven't changed. I love the efficient service. The person at the counter doesn't make me feel rushed, but rather, I like the fact that they get to the point and never mess up my order. Most of the time, I get a charburger with cheese and no pickles, along with a chocolate malt and some of their delightful fries. If I'm not feeling too hungry, I'll get just the charburger, as it's currently the cheapest full meal in I.V. (damn you, Hana Kitchen price increases). You should try the Santa Barbara style charburger when you're here, especially if you're an avocado or sourdough fan. It's the perfect way to enjoy a sunny, beautiful day in SB, after all! I like Habit more and more to the point today I realized that I do prefer it over In-N-Out. Habit is more fast casual though with a more extensive menu. Aside from the kid's chicken nuggets (which come with apple sauce and natural juice), everything I've had is really good. It's not all just about the burgers. Salads are topped with cheese grated fresh from wheels and the tuna in the albacore sandwich is line caught and sushi grade. The fries...The French fries are so full of flavor and perfectly salted so I prefer to eat them without ketchup, and that's rare for me to do. They're crispy and light and fluffy, almost buttery, inside. The sweet potato fries are good, nothing unusual. The tempura green bean fries are a delight to eat, lightly battered on the outside and al dente inside; they're flash fried per order. The Habit is not only tasty, but a really good value. I'm shocked every time because of the prices on the menu. You can get ice cream for around one dollar. The Habit is a public company for good reason! The outdoor seating for this location is shared with Starbucks and Subway. It's an enjoyable spot though the tables are often dirty. read more

This is the best place to stop for lunch if you find yourself in IV and are craving a burger. Habit was voted best burgers in the country for a reason. Simple and delicious. Plus, you can add avocado and bacon! I recommend getting the sweet potato fries. You won't regret it. The only negative thing to say about this location is the lack of indoor seating. It's all outside in the shared space. It's not usually a bad thing except for those days that the weather isn't the usual great SB weather. I have been you 3 different Habit locations. This location is the least impressive. The wait times are longer and I don't see as many people as I normally do. I ordered the Santa Barbara char with a drink. The thing that sticks out was the extra charge for cheese. At other locations, cheese comes when you order the burger. This is the 1st location I was charged extra. I'm not sure if it depends on the location. What's different about this place is that they also have an avocado paste as Instead of avocado slices. Always get a #1 and I get what I expect. It's a clean and fast paced burger joint that most people would enjoy living in Isla Vista. Definitely wouldn't make sense to go out of your way to drive through Isla Vista to go here but other than that it's delicious and walking distance to me. No parking and it being on the corner of Pardall makes it nearly impossible to drive to. Food is usually pretty good, but sometimes my fries are underdone and have almost a raw potato texture. The burgers are consistent, and in my opinion, are probably the best in IV. The reason behind my three star rating is that the service is the exact opposite from the burgers, and not consistent at all. Sometimes the employees are friendly and courteous, and other times they're more than lacking. For example, the other day I made an order over the phone and arrived in about five minutes to pick it up. I was the only customer in the building, so I paid right away, and waited by the counter for my number to be called. As I waited, several other customers arrived, placed their orders, and ALL get their numbers called before mine. This goes on for maybe 5-7 minutes, so I finally go up and ask what's taking so long with my food. Please keep in mind it's not crowded by any means, and I'm still the only one actually waiting BY THE COUNTER, while the other three or so people waited outside. After asking what's up, one of the employees tells me no one knew I was there to pick up my order. What?? How could no one know I was there?? I was literally the only person there! He then pulls my food in far-off from the side and finally places it in the bag. It had been sitting out for so long, and by this time, everything was cold and soggy. The worst part? Despite me being the ONLY CUSTOMER IN THE BUILDING, ordering first before anyone, and standing in clear view with receipt in hand, absolutely no one asked if I had received my food or asked anything at all for that matter. No apologies or anything. Just an "oops" and cold food. On top of this, there have been several occasions where they get my order flat out wrong. Habit is one of the cheapest eats in Isla Vista and it makes it particularly packed at most hours of the day. You will usually always hear Habit on the loud speaker calling out numbers starting before noon until late into the night. The location on the corner of pardall next to Starbucks and subway make it a hot spot for drunk students and out of towners. There's tons of outdoor seating shared with those two chains, but little indoor seating. The actual restaurant is super small, 80% or more taken up by the kitchen which is usually packed with workers. Service has made me quite uncomfortable on many occasions. I have had the cooks give me weird looks when in line to the point where the person taking my order even looked around weirded out. There's been many times where they took my order down wrong and I will say I come at normal hours, not the drunk people hours. Also the people who take my orders seem so uninterested in me ordering like I'm inconveniencing them at their job...? Don't come for stellar or even good service, it's definitely NOT here. Let's say I've tried almost everything on the menu to get the best idea of the food. I haven't tried the sandwiches because when I go to a burger place why wouldn't I get a burger? My favorite is the Santa Barbara Char, it has avocado and bacon without the added charge on sourdough with two patties. FYI getting cheese on it does not change the flavor so I say go without and save the dollar. They have forgotten my bacon many times which is quite depressing since that's one of the best parts. I've tried the BBQ Bacon Char and it was dripping in sauce and wasn't really that good. I've never gotten it again. Basic chars are good with cheese although it's nothing special like In n Outs sauce. Would get In N Out over Habit for regular burgers. As for fries, they are okay, McD's are better, although I am usually so full following my SB Char I don't order them every time. The onion rings here are awesomeeee and the best fried unhealthy food they have. I also like their fries green beans as they are wet on the inside but crunchy on the outside. Cooked well! Milkshakes are alright, though they are too thick for the straws so it's a challenge to even drink them. Overall, food is okay but cheap, service sucks, location is great, and I always end up going here but am rarely satisfied. I should stop, but the prices keep me coming back.
