I think The Habit gets overlooked because it's a chain. Apparently, once you have more than a few locations, the burger critics confiscate your "serious burger" credentials. I'd like to officially throw The Habit's hat into the ring. Their burgers have that great chargrilled flavor that a lot of places simply don't have, and they actually show some creativity throughout the year with their specialty burgers. I believe the Hatch Chile burger is coming up, and that one alone is worth a visit. Is it some tiny, secret burger joint where the owner grinds the beef in the back while telling you about his grandfather's recipe? No. But the food is consistently good. And I also appreciate that there are actual choices. Sometimes I want a burger. Sometimes a chicken sandwich. Sometimes a salad. Sometimes onion rings. It's nice going somewhere where the entire menu isn't basically: Burger Burger with cheese Fries Good luck. Give The Habit a chance. So, well I used to come here a lot but as of recently it just hasn't been the same. I haven't been going there as much as I used to. Their food portions seem to have shrunk in size a lot while prices remain the same and/or have gone up in price to be honest. When the $5 wraps came out I decided to give it one last chance. I was there on 7/9 in the early evening. First thing when I walk in the manager was having a conversation with what seemed to be customers to him but maybe he knew them personally. Talking about his personal dating life and just not really a dynamic in which this should be spoken of. So I order my food and go to sit at a table. Every single table is dirty. Every single table. So I ask the manager if there's something I can wipe the tables down with. He proceeds to wipe all of the outside tables but left the inside tables dirty. The whole restaurant was just dirty. Laziness is a disease you know? Not to mention the manager, who was seemingly running the store was just so unfriendly and I felt a little bit of a burden when I spoke to him. We got our food. The chicken in my wrap was dry not nearly enough sauce. And where on earth is the patty in my boyfriend's burger ? All in all, this place honestly needs to get shut down at this point. The food isn't great here anymore, the people don't run or maintain it well. I don't think I see myself coming back here sadly. Literally the best teriyaki burger in town, and the crispiest panko-breaded onion rings with the most incredible ranch dressing is a 1-2 punch. Great backup is the Santa Barbara burger with 2 patties, avocado, melting cheese and grilled onions. A solid meal as always. This time we departed from our normal Char burger with cheese and split a steak sandwich. I think this might be a new revamp steak sandwich there seem to be a lot more toppings on it including cheese, crunchy, onions, lettuce, etc. I don't remember it being made that way oh and barbecue sauce but it's still delicious nonetheless and the bread that it comes on was also delicious. And I gotta say the steak was very tender. I thought it was enough for a person to share with someone else. We paired that with a large Pepsi and fries, which were nice and crispy. I've been here many times over the years and this was the most disappointing experience yet. I didn't order much, just three shakes, fries, and a kids meal. The salted caramel shake had very little caramel and whipped cream. The cookies and cream shake, which was supposed to be chocolate by the way, also had very little whipped cream and a tiny sprinkle of cookies. And he didn't even bother to put whipped cream on the third shake until I asked and then he gave me a very small dab, all while acting like I was asking a lot of him. My experience at the habit this evening was great especially since it was extremely busy. To the point, the manager Mason and his crew were extremely cool. I walked in to place my order. I said this is my first time here. He said oh we're the number one fast food burger place in the United States. Wow, that's pretty impressive. I placed my order and I sat down across from the counter. I watched the cooks and the service staff. One gentleman was running the cashier and filling the orders for the eat in and take out and pick up. People were handing him red numbers that they were given when placing their order. So he was running multitasking, both putting the food items in bags and moving them to the pickup counter the counter from an upper counter near where the cooks were stationed. He'd once a thin napkin over the item I.e. frie place it in a bag and then continue filling orders. People would come to the counter and hand him a number and he would take his hand there put the number over in a stack with the other numbers and continue on filling the bags and their orders again using to pick up the items before placing in the bags putting a paper napkin over the top of the food item. Other people would make an order he'd stop what he was doing, and hand them a number and they would go to their table. There was no segregation of numbers that have been handed out and re-handed out and he had touched and other people touched while handling food without gloves, and the numbers were not wiped down before they were handed to somebody else that someone else had touched and held at their table Cross contamination. Bare hand. He was taking them from them with his bare hands, Really poor hygiene practices People would come in to pick up an order and they look on the counter and see that there were bags on the counter and they would look in the bags down with their face and then step back. Oh, that's not my order I don't want anybody touching my order after it's been made Plus, I waited 30 minutes for my order after seeing six people pick up orders and get served. I went to the counter and said where's my order. He looks at two bags that are on the counter and said Oh somebody must've picked your order up. Blowing me off. Then he said did you still wanna order and then he was getting ready to turn around more interesting than the order is coming off to be ready to g. I said I waited 30 minutes for my order you don't have it. Yes that's what I came in here so I handed them the receipt and re-ran the order He never asked me if I wanted a refund Never Sorry for the inconvenience. Sorry for your long wait nothing. Finally my order comes up and it's crammed in a small bag. I asked him for a larger bag and he flips it open buys my order in it so bothered. This place needs more help when you put a person as representing your business in compromising situations because he's trying to fulfill the orders for so many people and he's the only one bagging and taking money at a prime time during the night when everybody's stopping by for dinner You need to take a good evaluation of your business Have more care for those who work for you. We were craving delicious Habit burgers but there's not really one too close to our house. So stopped by this San Clemente location on the way home from work. First time using their ordering computers at the front, but the system was fairly intuitive and was able to place the order quickly. Next to me was a grandpa and his young granddaughter and it was very cute listening to her tell him how to order. Later I saw them at a table waiting for their food, comparing their favorite apps. Very sweet moment. Habit burgers are so good, only bad thing is the 20 minute drive to home meant my buns were a little mushy. But I pushed passed that minor inconvenience and enjoyed them! What I was served today (carry out) was a paper thin sliver of chicken-like meat over coated with crispy breading. The only taste it had was salt. Mine was very messy to eat with sauce dripping and on my hands. The meat paddy was so thin and smaller than the bun so did not get meat in every bite, just lettuce and sauce.
