I was in the area and craving a really good turkey sandwich, so I checked Yelp and came across this spot. Parking was easy for me I found street parking right by the beach, but they also have parking in the shopping plaza. I just happened to park outside. Before ordering, I asked to sample the egg salad and chicken salad, and honestly, I'm glad I did. Neither tasted fresh and both were lacking flavor, so that helped me decide to skip those. I ended up ordering the turkey sandwich with bacon, avocado, and all the fixings (I believe it's called the Rosa Special) on squaw bread. I have to say this sandwich was absolutely delicious. The bacon was perfectly crispy, the turkey was solid, and everything just worked together really well. What really stood out was their house sauce. I'm not sure what's in it, but it was so goooood! I even overheard other customers asking for it on the side. Definitely making a mental note to do that next time and find out exactly what it is. My only downside is the price. It was a bit high (around $18+), and I'm not sure it fully justifies that cost, but the quality is there. Solid deli, huge menu with something for everyone! I ordered Rosa's Best and a tuna melt. I took these to go and drove to Salt Creek to enjoy them. By the time we got there, the tuna melt bread had gotten very soggy from the heat so I wouldn't recommend the tuna melt for a to go order. Located in a shopping plaza. With plenty of free parking. I ordered Rosa's Best in a medium along with a Snapple Apple and a bag of chile lime chips The sandwich was stacked and full of flavor with fresh bread and quality ingredients. Everything tasted balanced and satisfying without being too heavy. The Snapple Apple was ice cold and refreshing, and the chile lime chips added a nice tangy crunch on the side The shop has that classic neighborhood deli feel and the staff was friendly and quick. Been sitting here for A FULL HOUR waiting for my single sandwich order. Finished my overpriced bag of chips and paper cup of iced tea (with no refill offered) a while ago. The bill for a regular sandwich, chips, and a drink came to $22+ (before my tip). The employee upfront taking orders was cold and unfriendly. There's a new signboard with all new sandwich names--but he did not even know what ingredients were on the sandwich I asked for. Been coming here a lot over the years, but quality of the experience has cratered. Finally went back up to the counter and discovered they had somehow misplaced my order. Not sure how that even possible. Gal in back making the sandwiches apologized and helped me out (although she didn't know the sandwiches by name either). Guy in front would not even make eye contact. Bottom line. Prices are up, service is down. Sadly, this 40-year Dana Point local won't ever be back. read more

Well, I have been eating here a couple of times a week for a long time. Today the overhead sandwich board was different, all the sandwich names have changed, and the prices were higher. I ordered what they said was the old California Dreaming. The old large sandwich was a sandwich and a half, 3 pieces of bread. The new sandwich was 2 pieces of bread with much less meat, so disappointing. A dine-in customer brought his sandwich back to the counter, opened up his sandwich, and asked why was he paying $17 for a sandwich with so little meat. There were a couple of people, probably new owners, milling around telling the staff how to do things and training on a new register. Tutor & Spunky's has been an iconic deli in Dana Point. I'm a regular beach-goer and over the summer I kept seeing people consistently bring these brown paper bags to the beach that said, "Tutor & Spunky's Deli" on it. I thought I have to try them out - must be a local secret! After being disappointed with Board & Brew I am happy to say Tutor & Spunky's is my new favorite sandwich spot. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because their french roll is not as soft and fluffy as I'd like, BUT they do a great job with fillings and condiments so there's alot of flavor! I tried the "To Be Named Later" which tasted like a classic Italian sandwich. My husband and I split a large and added a small side of potato salad and pasta salad - it was plenty for us! I'll definitely be coming back during my beach escapades! read more

Worst sandwich shop I've ever been to. Spent $25 for a sandwich and chips and a condiment sized container of pasta salad. The sandwich was dry and lacked any flavor. The young man working the counter was rude and unfriendly. There was also an older woman with short hair working here who didn't even acknowledge me and just kept staring at me as I was eating, While greeting everybody else who walked in. Price is crazy, I understand if the quality of product is the best but a lot of it came from Costco. I ordered the tutors special large on a French roll. I got two smaller hot dog buns essentially to make a large. The meat quality is mediocre. The service was fine, not good nor bad. In short I would not recommend this place. I just wanted a sandwich to eat on the beach. I'm not a local, this place popped up as I was driving through. Was greeted by a sign that read Try our famous dressing. Most deli dressing is just plain Italian or Thousand Island so I wasn't necessarily wowed by that sign. I was wrong, they describe it as Italian which it is but it is more than that as well. I got the Derick it was a roast beef, turkey and cheese. I added bacon, the bacon was crispy, the roast beef and turkey were fresh, I chose Swiss but they had other options. I forgot what the options were but standard deli choices. I got the the beach, and unwrapped a hug for my taste buds. I did not take any pictures because to be honest I wasn't expecting much, then once I ate it I devoured it. The place was clean but the menu board was out dated, expectations weren't high but this surpassed anything I was hoping for and made my beach day excellent. If I'm in the area again I will 100% be returning. read more

Highly dissatisfied. I am always looking for a new BLT. I ordered one through door dash for lunch and man was it bad. Lettuce and tomato wasn't even on the sandwich. I get not wanting it to get soggy but I don't wanna pay 20 dollars then have to pull the lettuce and tomato out of a ziplock and build the sandwich. It was a mess. Then the sourdough wasn't toasted either. I ordered the sandwich to work so I have no way of toasting the bread. It was all just one big weird disappointment. Won't be ordering again from here. Looking for a good sandwich in the Dana Point area and this came highly suggested. The restaurant was clean and the service was friendly. Don't get me wrong this is an average sandwich shop with not a whole lot more to say. The menu is kind of plain with not a whole lot different from most sandwich shops. The sandwiches we received were good but nothing to write home about. I would eat here again but knowing what I know I would look for a different sandwich shop before just coming back here. Paid over $15 for the Kelly's classic tuna sandwich I have never had a sandwich with so little meat on it. The tuna was spread so thin you could still see the bread through it in some places oh and they added an avocado yeah there was a green tint to the tuna. I didn't see any actual avocado. What a joke. Save your money and go to Board and Brew and get a real sandwich stuffed with real ingredients and not just a loaf of bread with some tuna spread on it.. read more

I've been going to tutor and Spunkys for the last 20 years and when I worked in the area ate there 3-5 days a week. I haven't been more recently but decided to float in while in Dana Point to support small business. Wow how times have changed. I am happy to pay a little more provided the food is good quality. Unfortunately the bag is worth more than the sandwich. More than $18 for a half of sandwich and cup of soup when the sandwich was terrible is absurd. When the old owner had it, the line used to be out the door at 12:00, it was now a shell of what it once was. Microwaved dry bacon, very little turkey and soggy bread do not make a good sandwich. Sad that a place I used to love and refer people to is now a place I will never return. Side note, the staff is still great. Just not the quality of the sandwiches. read more

Just recently discovered this place after a walk at monarch beach. I love a good sandwich and much prefer a local deli than a big chain sandwich shop. We got the Italian (I forget the name of the actual sandwich) and it was so good. I would have preferred a little less dough in the bread but overall I will definitely come back. The Italian dressing is homemade and it's so good and flavorful. They put some sort of Italian spices or herbs in the oil dressing. Parking lot is a bit small but there is usually space if you're there during off peak times. read more

The sandwich was just OK (very average ingredients) but the negative was the bread was not toasted (I had a hot sandwich) and it was falling apart when I bit into it. For a $16 sandwich I expected more gourmet ingredients, for example when we go to Ike's there's a lot more unique flavors and ingredients that makes the sandwich stand out from average deli sandwiches. This was comparable to grocery store deli sandwiches (Ralph's and Pavilions). Again, it wasn't a bad sandwich but it wasn't so good that would make me want to go back. read more

So disappointed in this local business. Went tonight for a sandwich for dinner and when I got home I realized my order-hot pastrami wasn't what I got. I was given a Turkey&Bacon. I HATE the taste of turkey so I won't eat it. Not living next door to them-I called them. The lady who answered the phone was nice, but all she was offering me was 50% off my next visit. My BLT was loaded, with a massive amount of perfectly crisp bacon, with fresh lettuce and tomato.
