I'll admit, it's been a minute since I've eaten at Ruby's, but we headed to The Outlets at San Clemente for a some birthday shopping and decided a little bite to fuel our endeavors couldn't hurt. We were welcomed in, seated right away and presented with an array of menu options. Nothing really grabbed my attention so when Hubs said he was just going with a simple Nathan's hot dog and fries I opined, 'That sounds perfect!' Within 10 minutes our orders were served and down those dogs went! Simple and delicious, hit the spot perfectly. You can't go wrong with the milkshakes! All delicious and they give you the extra in a separate cup. We also ordered chili cheese fries, a burger and a side Caesar. Server had never heard of anchovies so they didn't know if their dressing had it and they never found out for us. Overall, good casual spot. It was busy but they seated us right away. read more

The young lady covering all the tables indoors and outdoors, was working solo on Thursday at 0900. She was sweet and seemed to be doing the best she could. Her apologetic smile was telling. I should have paid attention. Beautiful setting in San Clemente under a big sky with the ocean just over there. We enjoyed sitting outside with an umbrella. The young lady offered to move the umbrella to anyway we wanted it but we were fine just as it was. She brought tall glasses of ice water with beautiful hunks of lemon in them. I was feeling so hopeful for this meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my pancakes with sausage patties. The egg was a little undercooked to my liking. No big deal. My one friend, who is particular, started complaining about her meal. I didn't listen cause I've heard it all before. But I did start paying attention when she pointed out she had asked for one type of potato and received a different type of potato. She had asked for catsup and it did not arrive for a good 10 minutes. Her toast was burnt to a crisp, even darker than I like and I like dark. I continued enjoying my meal until my other friend pointed out the long dark hair in her food. That's when I lost my appetite. What gets my goat, because it's so easy to do right, is the bad coffee. It was BAD. So bad I requested half-and-half in order to drink it. Then, the rub, relates to our sharing the bill . Even though our individual summary of foods was correct the tip suggestion was for the entire meal not the portion we were paying for. That's unscrupulous. read more

This is a pretty cool looking interior - the flying buttresses of the ceiling, the decor is quite cute - but the food was just 'meh'. I got the bacon cheeseburger and it was just a tough patty - bacon was good - but you've already lost 50% of the equation. Staff was super friendly and attentive - and the restaurant is pretty large. We got there right at 12:15, prime lunch time. We waited at "wait to be seated" stand for about 10 mins before anyone even acknowledged us. We ordered the chicken strips plate and a gluten free classic burger with chili cheese fries. The fries were great. Everything else was meh. My daughter did enjoy the buffalo ranch sauce. I always enjoy a Ruby's diner and like to see what the different themes are at the different locations. This one is a surf theme and has a tiki room in the back. I was so glad to see that they have gluten-free buns, so I ordered the avocado Burger with a chicken breast instead. The flavor was good but actually the combination of ingredients was a little too slippery and the sandwich fell apart so I just ended up eating it with a fork and knife. I think maybe next time I'll get the guacamole on the side. Service was absolutely stellar and I had a great time. read more

Came here a couple days ago and the interior was pleasant. The kitchen area was really cool. It is set up like an old airstream trailer. I wish I took a better look around. Service was friendly, a little slow but friendly regardless. Ordered an oldie. The classic burger and a butterfinger malt. Burger was decent, not like remembered it but still decent. The fires were okay, definitely needed at least another 30 second in the fryer, a little soft. The butterfinger malt though... oooof just as I remembered. So delicious!!! We're from out of state and this was my first experience at a Ruby's and I really enjoyed it. Service was ok - about what you would expect from a "diner" but the food was fantastic and the interior is so cool - I wish I look photos of it, but I might have to go back for a root beer float before we leave town! It's very mid-Century modern and the cooking area is in a hollowed out Airstream. At our table we had a 1/2 tuna melt with a salad, a bacon cheeseburger and a patty melt with onion rings and everything was delicious. The party melt was one of the best I've ever had - tons of onions, gooey cheese and a nice crispy caraway rye. One of the few Ruby's Diners left in OC and I'm so glad it's at this beautiful location with plenty of parking and indoor and outdoor seating. Service is super friendly as typical of this chain which I appreciate a lot, and the portion sizes I feel are a bit bigger than I remember, so nice bonus! Our children are now young adult adults, but we would come here quite often into this location as well as Corona Del Mar, Newport, Pier, etc.. we probably arrived around 5:30 PM/5:45 PM and it was rather empty but then it suddenly started to fill up with families etc. it is part of the San Clemente outlet mall and is one of the few full-service restaurants over there. Our server was very nice but busy. We placed our initial drink order and then our food. We opted for a cup of chili, a kids, turkey burger, and a tuna melt as well as a kids milkshake. Keep in mind we are adults. We expected the chili to be brought out first, but I think it was forgotten to be honest. It wasn't such a big deal, but but when we inquired, we actually had to wait several minutes to get it included with our meal. Everything tasted delicious actually. And I really do enjoy their french fries. They're thin and crispy and perfectly cooked. The server kept checking back quite often, although we never did get a refill of our beverage. It has that old school diner vibe with red booths. There's also an outside seating area. That's really nice in the summer. There's plenty of parking out front. We probably would come back. read more

Cool that they serve breakfast all day because I wanted lunch and my wife wanted breakfast. She got the cinnamon roll French toast that came with 2 eggs & got bacon. She liked it. I got the fresh roast turkey breast sandwich (turkey breast, lettuce, tangy cranberry sauce & mayo served on a roll) and it was good. There no waiting, we got sat down right away. Here is what I didn't like. 20 minutes go by and no one had even gotten our drink's order yet. So we had to ask for someone. After that, our orders were taken, we ordered our food right away too, just in case lol. The food came out another 20 minutes later, and it was good. And the prices were average. We did enjoy our breakfast there, the food was really good, except for my daughter's potatoes (They were hard), but the potatoes on all other plates were nice and soft. So we just shared. We'll probably try it again. By the time we were leaving, around 11:10 am, the place was packed. There was also a line of people outside the restaurant by their front door. read more

I will make this review simple. Went here last night for a double birthday celebration. Horrible atmosphere. Awful service. Waiter was rude and inattentive. Terrible food all around. Filthy bathrooms and TP and soap were empty. Trash cans overflowing. Dirty tables and floors. Super bad customer service. No B-Day song or dessert or acknowledgement. We used to go to Ruby's several times a year but this was our last visit. At least the food used to be good but it is just plain uneatable now. Consider yourself warned. read more
