Mmmm who could resist a burger on dark rye from here! My family has been coming here for years! Burgers are always delicious and the onion rings are killer! They also have burger selections that are on the healthier side as well - for example they offer a buffalo burger and it is very juicy and not dry like some other places can be. Who can pass up getting a green river when you come here! They have also done some pretty good updates to the menu - you can now get a pretzel roll or mini sized burgers for those that are not so hungry! I have to be honest, I don't understand all of the praise this place receives. Last Saturday I was flipping through the channels on cable, and wandered across Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. Usually I wouldn't watch that show, but it just happened that they were featuring Hackney's, and since it was supposed to be a Chicagoland institution, I thought I would watch. It looked pretty amazing on TV. By coincidence, the very next day I found myself about a mile from the restaurant, so my fiancée and I stopped in for lunch. The very first thing that caught our eye when we walked in was that we were the youngest customers in Hackney's by about 40 years. The average age of everyone there was probably somewhere in the 70s. It was like I had just stepped into an assisted living facility, or maybe the 20th reunion of the Golden Girls cast. I was hoping that I could eat my lunch and leave without having to perform CPR on any of my fellow customers. Once I got around to ordering, I decided that I should try the famous Hackneyburger, and my fiancée ordered the Grilled Cheddar, Avocado & Tomato sandwich. My excitement about eating at a place of such renown quickly dissipated as soon as my food arrived and I bit into my burger. It was, without a doubt, the least flavorful, least exciting burger I have ever had in my life. I'm not really sure how they did it, but I have to assume that they used no seasoning whatsoever when preparing the patty. Even the most boring burger should at least have some salt on it. The bread, which was also touted as being baked in-house every day and delicious, was mediocre at best. Even the french fries were bland. Not a single crystal of salt had been placed on them. My fiancée's lunch was equally tasteless. The only good part of the meal was the 2 diet cokes we ordered. Overall, this was probably the least memorable $30 lunch I have ever eaten. What annoys me the most though is that it came so highly recommended by 1) a TV show that is supposed to be dedicated to good burger style fare and 2) all of these Yelp reviews. They mentioned on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that Hackney's has been open since the 1920's, and that during Prohibition they used to give the burgers away to customers of the speakeasy. I have to say, I don't even think I would take a free burger from Hackney's. So, if you are craving a great burger go to M-Burger, or Kuma's, or Rosebud, or any of a number of pretty solid places in Chicago. Please, please, please, whatever you do, don't go to Hackney's. Unless, of course, you live right next door in a retirement home, and have to get back quickly for your nightly bingo game. Whenever I am in the area this place is a must stop location. If you like onions then get the loaf to share with your table-mate. The burger on their home made dark rye is my main go-to meal here. Some day I will have to try something else.... maybe. read more

Oh man, Hackney's! Such a classic! I used to love this place as a kid. My family and I used to come eat the burgers here all the time, since it was the best burger we knew about in the Chicago burbs. I came her after so many ice shows as a teenager, eating my greasy, late night burger to celebrate making it through a crazy weekend. I'll always remember the classic, cozy old-lodge style and the warm and fuzzy feelings I get when I think about eating here. Even though I'm far from being of the elk-lodge ilk, I will always reserve a special place in my heart for Hackney's. Their burgers sure were huge and tasty. read more

Hackney's is a total staple in my family, so it can get a bit hackneyed at times. I still love it, though, and I think that it's pretty darn good! When in Chicago, I am often treated to this tradition of onion-ring-bricks, Hackneyburgers, and green rivers, so I have to say that I love just about everything on the menu. Being a native Louisianian, I can say that I have a particular affinity for the French Dip sandwich (tres bon!). This place is pretty good, and the service is always consistent and speedy. The place is always packed, too, so you might want to make a reservation. Hackney's is pretty good! read more

Being new to the area this was one place we were told to try but I wish we didn't listen! I've had way better onion loafs in my day and the supposedly wonderful burger was disappointing. I didn't like the bread and my kids has pasta with a very unpleasant marinara sauce. I can appreciate an old feel in a restaurant but this one felt stuffy and the people were not very friendly. I Haven't been here in years and now I remember why. The fabulous onion rings don't quite make up for the sub-par burgers. Great menu, too bad the food Is horrible. When you order a burger medium rare, you expect it to be pink and juicy. Instead it was well done and dry. I turned it back in and 15 mins later got a burger that was still mooing. I gave up and will never go back. Life is short and there are too many other great choices. read more

The service was great, and got in right away at 6:45 on a Friday night. BUT the 1/4 pound burgers were terrible. The Malt that we asked for with extra malt didn't taste malty at all, until there was a 2" rock of malted milk power found floating in the drink....UGH sadly will not go back. I absolutely love this place so much, ever since I was a kid Hackney's has never disappointed. The fried brick of onions will guarantee make your trip here all the worthwhile, especially with ketchup. I'm definitely craving some right now. And if you do the burger/beer combo, the bleu cheese burger or buffalo burger with a Hofbrau will knock your socks off. Nothing like a cold Hofbrau served in a pint sized glass. read more

Warm, inviting and good food. Hackneys is a Glenview tradition and they have continued to modernize their fate and update their space while keeping what is good alive. Great place have had private parties here. The waitress some times could be better. They are having a week long celebration of St. Patricks Day. Live music. We have been going there for years and things just continue to go downhill. The place looks more worn and dirty every year while the prices are soaring. There St. Patrick's day Corned Beef use to be reasonably priced. Now they give you half as less while paying twice as much. STOP GOUGING your longtime customers. read more

The best burgers I have ever eaten. I have been going there for almost 50 years. I have never been disappointed. The beef is of the best quality. A rare burger will "moo" during the first bite. The onion loaf is evil. I cannot skip it, although it has twice the fat and calories of the burger. Perhaps the other food there is as good. I will never know. I have seen people eat shrimp, steak, chicken fingers, and even a veggie burger. They seemed happy but must not be playing with a full deck. My mother so loved the place that we had a party there after her memorial service. I know I will be coming back again and again. read more

Check your diet at the door and just gorge yourself on the onion loaf (get the full order, the half is never enough) and Hackneyburgers. They have awesome desserts too! The wine list is surprisingly diverse and delicious! If you're looking for a drink, be sure to say hi to Jeff! The guy is hilarious and makes a damn good drink! Excellent hamburgers on a delicious bun are the real highlights here. In recent years they have tried to gussy up the menu with ever-fancier burger options, but the standard issue Hackneyburger is definitely the way to go. The onion loaf is also a must-do, if only to try something new. It is best ordered "loose and crispy," where they break up the loaf and get a more even fry on all of the onions -- the normal way can sometimes be too greasy and undercooked on the inside. Good mood suddenly shifted. Met a buddy for a sammich and a drink here last week. As usual good enough reubens were had, fries were tasty, drinks were not huge but had good strength. As we were leaving we noticed a small sign on an interior door advertising ~"Any burger and a beer combo for $10 after 8 on Thursday." Gee, we were wistful that we had not come on Thursday after 8 but then realized, "HEY, IT IS THURSDAY AND WE DID ARRIVE AFTER 8!' I hope we get the same server next time so we can give him a retroactive stiffing for not mentioning the best deal in town. Everything everybody says is true. Hackney's has been around forever and is a great neighborhood place for food and drink. The restaurant has a lot of charm with different rooms and if you grew up in the area you probably have great memories of family dinners there. The food is good, but not great. The burgers are acceptable and the much touted black bread is just black bread. The onion loaf is a big haystack of onion rings--if you like onion rings they are good. Everything is decent but not the best you've ever had. What is nice is that it is a place that everyone can find something that they will like. There is a good kids menu, plenty of sandwiches and entrees for adults, a gameroom for the kids, and a full bar. The location on Harms may be the "original" but it is very small and the wait can be forever. Go to the Lake location--same food but bigger. read more

This place has been on my family's regular rotation for years. It is fast, fun for the kids (they have a game room) and tasty. The food is typical bar food, but really quite good and it is not as expensive as many other places around town. It is really safe to say that if you grow up on the North Shore of Chicago, you will have many fond memories of family meals at Hackneys. We had my dad's 80th birthday party here and could not have been more pleased! The entire staff was friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They provided a screen for a slide show and microphone. They were so accommodating and didn't rush us to leave the room.
