This is some of the best food I've had in the Minneapolis area! The decor is super cute--a laid, back, tropical vibe--even into the bathroom! I appreciated that the menu was well labeled to indicate which items met dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free) so that I was abe to choose easily without having to ask the server. Every dish was well made and packed with tons of flavor. Highlights were the Beef Lettuce Rolls, Beef Rendang, and Passion Fruit Posset (the candied puffed rice--are you kidding me?!). My family and I had dinner here the day before Mother's Day. We were able to get a reservation for a late night dinner around 9 pm. I don't remember if they had a parking lot, but we parked on the side of the street. Our group of 7 was seated right away. My first impression was that the restaurant interior is really beautiful. Lots of greenery inside. The food was really good. They have a menu with dishes from all over Southeast Asia, including Philippines and Vietnam. I loved the diverse menu. I ordered the Mi Quang -- a rice noodle salad with pork-soy broth, pork belly, shrimp, and veggies. I also got to try my husband's Beef Rendang, which was yummy and quite spicy. The dishes were flavorful but my only gripe was how small the portions were for the price point (my bowl was $18... it looks bigger in the picture but it was definitely smaller than like... a small bowl of pho). Love this beautiful restaurant! The interior design is absolutely beautiful, while it used to be a strip club I believe, they have completely transformed the space to be very welcoming, comfortable and it makes you feel like you are on a tropical vacation! The service is good and the food is great! I wish the portion was bigger for the price you are paying but it's a fun place to go with a group and try many items on the menu. Starting with the drink - absolutely phenomenal and it was served in this clay glass that was ice cold for the two hours we sat for dinner. Outstanding. We started with the butternut quash wontons and they were really delightful! For our main course we split the crispy rice salad adding pork belly and the Balinese chicken thigh. The rice salad is served cold - which makes sense after the fact but not something I was expecting at all. I didn't love it. If I'm eating crispy rice my expectation is it should still be hot off the stone but that's a personal preference. The Balinese chicken thigh was absolutely to die for. I tossed the whole thing and the flavors are ll built for each other. The coconut curry sauce is outstanding. For desert the bread pudding was ok - from reading it on the menu I was expecting it to be served like in some warm coconut milk, so it had a dryness to it that I didn't care for by my friend loooooved it. Now the ambiance is a cute little NE vibe! Loved the aesthetic. The server we got was not great. The host that sat us was friendly, the food runner was amazing and answered questions was so informed, the water fillers, other servers were nice. Maybe we got the bad egg, maybe they were having a bad day.. But the eye roll we got when we inquired about the clay glass was flabbergasting and it borderline ruined our entire experience. First time visiting Minnesota and this was one of the highly recommended restaurants that AC Hotel listed. I loved the space, the dimmed lighting set the mood but I will say that if that restaurant is packed it dos get quite loud, but our group didn't mind it at all. Our server was great! She was super nice, attentive, and professional. We asked her recommendations and she immediately showed us all the fan favorites and recommended family style, which was the best for our group of four. For the appetizers we ordered spring rolls and English pea wontons - very delicious! We then ordered Balinese Chicken thighs, beef rendang, and the Vietnamese crepes - everything was so good! Our server was well versed in the food & drinks; as a GF (not celiac) diner, I appreciated that items were clearly labeled GF, GFF, vegan or vegan option. Hai Hai treated me to one of my favorite meals this summer. I could honestly stop there, but now that I've got you hooked I'll share with you why. We came here to celebrate a friend's wedding and like the OCD person I am I had done some menu research prior to arriving. I knew I wanted something lighter and maybe not too crazy filling so I went with the Burmese Cauliflower. I noticed on Yelp that this dish had some mixed reviews but I'm here to say it lived up to all of my hopes and dreams. The cauliflower was perfectly roasted and then mixed into a curry that was literally what dreams are made of. It was so good I'm still thinking about it two months later. It's also so good that I have spent time on the internet trying to figure out how I can recreate it at home. So far I haven't been able to master it, but I'm still holding out hope. Our table shared some appetizers and they were each delicious. I had a few cocktails and again, each one a homerun. Overall, this is what a five star restaurant should be about, memorable dishes, great service, and dreaming about a return. Despite all the hype, we never got over to Hai Hai until recently. I don't know how this gem remained off our radar for so long, especially sine we loooooooove us some Asian food. So the restaurant itself is really cute. The gardener in me loved all the pretty plants situated in the bright sunny windows. The place was busy and loud, but it was still possible to have a conversation at your table without shouting. It was also much larger than I thought it was from the outside. I would definitely recommend a reservation. Bonus points for the Cafe du Monde coffee cans serving as table utensil holders. So first beverages. I wanted a cocktail and I honestly panicked a little when ordering. I tend to like whiskey and didn't see even a single option in that lane. I wound up ordering the French 22, because I saw my backup liquor, rum. But what I received was a very un-dark liquor type of cocktail. It was very very strong to me and I actually put some of my water into the drink to make it more manageable. We often joke about drinks that have "boozy essence." This drink had boozy essence overload. I don't think I would order it again (but the pretty flower on top of it did remind me very distinctly of Hawaii). We got the fried mushroom appetizer which was BOMB. If you like mushrooms, order this. It had a really interesting very thin coating on it - not in any way bready or bulky. It really allowed the mushrooms to be the star and man they were good. We also got the shrimp toast, one of my favorite Asian apps and one that you don't see enough places (boooo on Lat 14 for taking it off their menu. This was the best shrimp toast I have ever had. It had real chunks of shrimp in it. It was so good. Get this too. So after two stellar appetizers, we were really excited about the main course. We got the sticky rice, which I can already tell you is going to be My dish from now on when we go here. Perfectly presented, perfect mix of stuff, perfect rice, super tasty. Hubby got the crepe, which is really interesting. It looks like an egg-shell taco - shaped like a taco and crispy. And it's served with lettuce and you're supposed to eat it like a lettuce wrap. It was a little awkward. Like we have to cut up the "omelette taco" and then use the lettuce. It was tasty - and the differences in texture were awesome. But it was kind of weird and hard to eat. Absolutely a neat place and must visit! The moment you walk in you're welcomed with a tropical feel and many beautiful plants to decorate the space. Staff was so friendly and accommodating, happy to share their suggestions for how best to enjoy your meal. Our party chose to share food and I highly recommend this approach. The brussels sprouts probably stole the show for me as they had the best flavor! We also enjoyed the sweet potato dish, which are perfectly soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The chicken thigh was excellent with a pronounced coconut flavor, and the grilled pork shoulder had a wonderful, smoky and savory balance to it. We also shared the bread pudding for dessert and it was a nice compliment, yet I would've loved to have had a light coconut sauce on the top. My bf and I were coming to Minneapolis for one night and his friend recommended Hai Hai. We're both kinda foodies and when we saw the menu, reviews, and accolades, we knew we had to come. My best friend moved back to MN recently so she joined, and I knew this place would be up her alley too. To start, what a fun atmosphere! Kind of a tiki-inspired vibe but more chill and contemporary. The waiter advised (or at least it's what I heard) that it's more of a family-style, share with the table, place but he could do a proper coursed meal. We opted to share 7 dishes between us, and in a great coincidence (?), all the dishes seemed to built for fair sharing between us (i.e. 3 ribs or 6 pieces of tofu, etc). We got the salt & pepper tofu, butternut squash wontons, Balinese chicken thigh, pork ribs tocino, beef rendang, and crispy sweet potatoes. We finished the meal with the tiramisu. Everything was EXCELLENT. My favorite was either the tofu or the chicken thigh and I'd say the tiramisu was the weakest for me. That is not the say it wasn't delicious but it was a pretty standard tiramisu - not nearly as interesting as the rest of the meal. I think I would have preferred the posset. Anyway, can't say enough good things about the food. The service was excellent too. Oh and we each did get a drink, which we all really enjoyed. Lastly, and maybe this is standard in MN but not where I'm from, loved not having to tip. I thought for everything we got, it was very reasonable. We came here for a weekend dinner and I definitely recommend making a reservation as it can get relatively busy. Also the small parking lot behind the restaurant gets full easily but street parking was plentiful. I really enjoyed the tropical plant based decor and good drinks. However, I think the food was only ok and can be pricy depending on what you order. We ordered a few appetizers to share and 2 main entrees and didn't have any leftovers despite only being 2 people. I would say the appetizers are overall very small and not great value for cost. Also the food was not as dynamic as I am used to for Southeast Asian cooking. I felt the sauces needed more fish sauce/seasoning. I did appreciate the fresh herbs that we received. Honestly, this is a hidden location in Northeast minneapolis. Definitely a hit in Northeast Minneapolis. If you havent try it, you should definitely check it out. First all, not many places have a spicy kicker. However, these plates, did not come to play, they were good and had a good spicy kick. It linger in your mouth. The spring roll was typical, however the sauce that came with it... was "chef kiss" it was good. It was a different kind of sauce i havent try before. The balinese chicken was delicious, the yellow dauce covering the rice was like a curry and it mix really well. The beef rendang was good it did had a little spicy kick to it. First of all, I love the ambience of this place! The interior design is just so good and fitting with the food they serve. You walk in and are greeted by warm teal-colored walls, plants sprawling throughout the space, bamboo hats as lamp shades, and little details like the Cafe Du Monde cans to hold utensils. The design seems well thought through. All of this together makes for a tropical, lively atmosphere, making it the perfect place to gather with friends and family. I also like how their menu is set up to be shared. It offers the opportunity to try a little bit of everything, which is exactly what my group and I did. My favorite was the Balinese Chicken Thigh. My go to is always the crispy rice salad with pork belly but this time we wanted to sample a bunch of stuff so we also got the fried mushrooms, fried Brussels sprouts, and the green curry. Thoughts on each dish: Crispy Rice Salad with Pork Belly - 5+ stars it's truly a one of a kind dish that I've never not ordered! The crispy rice chunks, savory pork belly, fresh cucumber and herbs are combined with some spice and lime for the perfect dish. It hits every salty, spicy, refreshing note you want in a meal! Brussels Sprouts - also 5 stars! A brand new item I tried from the menu and they might have been even better than the crispy rice somehow! They were cooked TO PERFECTION and the sauce was a great acidic addition that made these so addicting to eat! One day I'll try to replicate them to make at home but until then I'll be ordering them often! Hai Hai got added to the list as soon as their won their most recent award. I'm was happy to get a reservation within a week for dinner and met up with some friends to finally check this place out. I was hoping to be woah and sadly I left not really planning to come back. It is possible my hopes were too high but I was really wanting more from our dinner. We started with the spring rolls. I don't think I understood what I was getting the photos honestly looked like lumpia but it was a traditional spring roll (not fried) with a fried piece added. Would I order them again? No. Did they look cool and make for awesome photos? Yes. For dinner I went with the Hanoi sticky rice, it was good but a ton of pork flass that started to feel like sawdust in my mouth. The dish didn't woah me but I ate about 75% of it. Would I get it again? No. Was it pretty to look at? Yes. I felt that was a common theme between our party. Everything looked great and man the photos #chefskiss but everything was a let down. The place was super busy, a line down the street even in a rain storm, it's possible we were there on an off night. As others mentioned the place is beautiful! My sister heard about this place through Reddit of all places and I am so happy she did! We got the fern cakes, coconut shrimp toast, brussel sprouts, and beef rendang. I still dream about the shrimp toast - it was the perfect balance of flavors and I loved the heat! The beef redang was good as were the Brussel sprouts - they went well together. I was excited to try Hai Hai, especially after their chef won the James Beard award recently. The atmosphere is adorable, service was outstanding, my drink (A Life Aquatic) was smokey and crisply delicious. We ordered classic spring rolls to start. They were very good. I liked the way each flavor came through as I ate it. At the same time, I have a little strip mall restaurant near my home that makes the most amazing spring rolls (the one I get is their summer tempura rolls, so also a tempura roll). Theirs has a pop of mint and their dipping sauce is something I literally want to lick out of the container. So for me, the spring rolls go to Rolls & Bowls. Next we ordered Mi Quang and Beef Rendang. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect with the Mi Quang, but it reminded me of the Tantanmen Ramen we crave from Rolls & Bowls, but again, R&B has the edge on flavor, and her pork literally is fall-apart tender, whereas Hai Hai's was a little difficult to cut, and instead of shrimp, R&B has some kind of yummy pork crumbles (probably a sausage) and flavorful mushrooms, plus the spice level is much higher, which we like. So I found myself comparing my meal with one of my favorite places and wondering if strip mall chefs ever get James Beard nominations? Probably not. And to be fair, we only get the spring rolls and Tantanmen Ramen at Rolls & Bowls because they are so good that I can't bring myself to try anything else, so it's probably unfair to compare the two menus overall since I haven't eaten extensively from either one. My husband got the Beef Rendang which I had several bites of and it was super tender, spicy and delicious. I will order that the next time we go for sure. We finally got a chance to try Hai Hai after chef Christina Nguyen won a James Beard Award and were not disappointed. I think what we liked most was that the menu isn't just typical Asian dishes done well, but creative Asian inspired dishes done very well. They're familiar but reimagined. We started with three appetizers; the Tamarind Pork Ribs (two per order and a MUST HAVE), Salt & Pepper Fried Tofu (ok, but then I'm not a huge tofu fan), and the Coconut Shrimp Toast (which everyone said was the best of the three, although I think the ribs were). You can probably build a complete meal just from the appetizers. My wife actually ordered the Malaysian Fried Shrimp as her entree and really enjoyed them. However, a side of Coconut Jasmine Rice was a miss. The Coconut Rice that came as part of the Balinese Chicken Thigh was terrific and what we thought the side would be. That Chicken dish is also not to be missed. We also tried the Beef Rendang (spicy, but not overpowering), Hanoi Sticky Rice (nice size portion), Grilled Pork Shoulder (yummy), and Vietnamese Crepe with Pork Belly & Shrimp (bigger than expected, but a bit greasy). Everyone was really pleased with their choices. The cocktail menu is one of the best we've seen anywhere; it was very difficult to choose. So, we all tried each other's drinks. All appetizers are Rock'en. In particular the mock Duk spring rolls; and cauliflower Crepe is vegetarian and out of this world, Chicken thighs and rice has a most heavily yellow color sauce that is really remarkable. 10 out of 10 The vibe is amazing, food is great each desert was wicked sharp and refreshing. My first visit to Hai Hai and I can't wait to come back. We made reservations because it was Dining Out For Life and figured it would be busy.... it was (but always a good sign.). We were seated quickly. For to drink, I had something delicious with vodka and fruit. Appetizers and entre was amazing, but the best part was the Passion Fruit Posset (I had to google was posset was.). OMG Y'ALL IT WAS LIFE CHANGING... I told Dustin that I want to come back just for dessert, it was that good. 10 months in the Twin Cities and he hadn't taken me there... I was a little mad that it took me so long to experience Hai Hai. The atmosphere was a little loud and our table was a little close to our neighboring diners, but SO worth it. Check it out. This place was very busy and I didn't have a reservation but they were able to squeeze me in on their very large back patio. My server, Jake, was friendly, checked in on me regularly and provided great recommendations. I got the pork ribs tocino, crispy rice salad with pork belly & the BA (their non-alcoholic version of a pina colada). The pork ribs hit the spot! Great sweetness and meaty ribs. The pickled vegetables were delicious too. The crispy rice salad was more rice (and pork belly) than salad but had a nice kick of spice. It was a little salty but pairing it with the radish slice or lettuce helped cut the salt There are many other dishes I'd like to come back and try. read more

We had another fantastic dinner at one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the country, Hai Hai. This time we sat at the bar and let Nathan (Nat or Nathan Detroit) take care of us. His service was exemplary. Nathan mixed me two Mezcal cocktails that were fantastic, and his dinner suggestions were right on. Our beef laab wraps were incredible, and I practically licked my plate. Fresh green curry was just as good, and I almost drank the sauce. I refrained simply because it would have looked disgusting. I ordered the ribs for dessert, and gnawed on them like a rabid wolfhound. I didn't care about disturbing anyone's sensibilities. Hai Hai is an amazing restaurant. During the warm weather, the space opens up to the outside with almost a tropic ambiance. It isn't Hanoi, but it's damn close. Hai Hai is an iconic American restaurant. Go and enjoy. read more

If you're looking for a tropical getaway without leaving Minneapolis, Hai Hai should be at the top of your list. With the creatively and absolutely delicious menu, creative and fresh cocktails, and decor that immediately transports you to a coastal Vietnam, this is one of my favorite places to bring out of town guests. I've tried something different each time I've been and have been far from disappointment. Arrived at a Friday evening without a reservation so we had to wait a little before getting seated. I would recommend getting a reservation beforehand on the weekend evenings just to avoid any long wait. The inside was pretty dim so don't expect any bright lights. The pork ribs tocino were so flavorful and amazing. The meat was very soft and easily came off the bone. I will say it was disappointing that you only get two for $10 but I would definitely go again just to order them. The Khao Soi noodle soup I felt was pretty bland especially after eating the pork ribs which were so flavorful. I wouldn't get it again but if you're someone that likes a coconutty soup base and want a more mild dish I would recommend it for them. The beef Laab lettuce wraps were delicious and I would recommend it. It does have some spicy kick to it so just be careful if you can't handle it. The cocktails were also pretty good I enjoyed my sundown in Saigon if you're looking for a very sweet and fruity alcohol drink. Overall I think the food was good and the staff was very helpful and nice. read more
