Hai hai has been on my list of places to try for what seems like years and I'm so mad at myself for not going sooner! We made reservations (a must) for 6 on Saturday. Parking was available on street and we lucked out with a spot right out front. Upon entering we were seated immediately. The entire indoor decor was a plant lovers dream. They took tropical themed and turned it up to 1000%. From all the gorgeous plants to the seating, wall decor and menus it all came together in the perfect way to up your experience. We ordered drinks and spring rolls to start and they were so good! They had a crunchy fried egg roll paper rolled on the inside to get the spring rolls some structure and made it much easier to eat versus other ones that might fall apart at the first bite. Drinks we chose were the Hai Tai and Tour Bus Tales and they were both perfect. Main dishes were the Hanoi sticky rice bowl (5/5) and the Vietnamese crepe (3.5/5) we also ordered the crispy sweet potatoes, even though we knew it would be a lot of food, and I'm so glad we did. They were highlight for me and definite 5/5. What's also great about this place is that it is a no tipping establishment. They add on an automatic 20% and are very clear on the menus that there's no tipping. When the bill comes there isn't even a spot to leave a tip. Of course you can throw a few bucks on the table if you have cash and choose to but they by no way make it seem expected or obligated. Hai Hai is a total gem! The food is delicious. The service is attentive but not overwhelming. The bathrooms are cool. It has become one of our go-to places for fun date nights. Parking is a bit tricky, very small attached lot and not so great street parking. Also the tables are very close together in the restaurant so be aware if you're plus sized like me (though they move so it's easy enough to adjust). Highly recommend! read more

I was super excited to come to Hai Hai after reading a lot about it in various Minneapolis food articles online, and finally had the chance to stop by when an international coworker was visiting for the week. Myself and a few other coworkers stopped by after work one day and one of the coworkers had been raving all about this place. However, I had also heard some mixed reviews from some friends so I was a little skeptical, but excited. Their menu is pretty small and even the more main course type items are still pretty small in size. I also found it a little strange that the cuisine was just broader Southeast Asia. There was no attempt to stick to one cuisine from the region, which can definitely work in some cases, but was a little fishy when the place is decoration a bit like a tiki bar and all the staff are wearing Hawaiian shirts. For the meal, I ended up going with the Shrimp Curry Bird's Nest and we also split an order of spring rolls. The spring rolls were good, albeit it nothing special. The dipping sauce it came with was not my favorite as compared to other places. For the main course, the Shrimp Curry Bird's Nest was unfortunately just not good at all. I found the curry to be completely 1-dimensional. No depth of flavor at all and that depth is generally what makes curry such a great meal choice. This one really disappointed me big time. This was our first time. We were so anxious. Arrived early w/o reserv. Big mistake. Full so were taken to back deck area. Very cold with one infrared heater down the middle. So edges which basically tent cloth were cold. Floor was very cold as you were sitting on bare concrete. Slipped going in as there is unmarked and unlit step down. I jammed my knee not knowing the step was there and the was floor dark and there was no red tape or warning about step. We were immediately close to the step. A couple groups of people arrived after we did and one woman was not warned by the host and she hurt her, not aware of the step. So patron beware. Lawsuit certain and clearly an OHSA violation. Music was too loud to chat with our friends. Asked three different times to turn down. No compliance. I went to bathroom and almost fully face planted on that darn step again. Twice now. My bad. Forgot. Went on advice of Triple D. No go. We shared about 6 different choices none pleased but the rib appetizer. Triple D was wrong as two the dishes were the ones Triple D recommended. We came here while visiting Minneapolis for a Vikings game on the recommendation of a friend. Wow, what a good friend! The restaurant is decorated in a very tasteful asian theme and definitely not over the top. Really nice. We were seated promptly at our reservation time (make reservations, people). The server was amazing and so prompt and attentive without being overbearing. Seriously, as soon as you thought "gee, I might like another...", the server was there and asking the same question. Do they have some sort of ESP receivers in there or what? Finally the food and drink. Simply put, amazing. I had the coconut curry, but I honestly cloudy tell you what my guests had. Sure, they were raving and talking to each other. But all I could do was eat my chicken coconut curry dish and sip my super tasty cocktail. The Hai Hai is a one of a kind very well loved place, I have been here maybe 20 times, and absolutely have my faves but try to add a new thing here and there too I have never had anything I did not like, sometimes things have been a bit spicy for my liking but they are very good about listing a red pepper next to each menu item if it's spicy. So I was here tonight with 2 others. We all ordered the Hai Hai drink - Rum, coconut orgeat, Thai Tea, Tropical cordial and lime. It came in a very cute chilled glass, So nummy!!! The 2nd drink shown is their Best Life which is Tequila, Mezcal, pineapple, Tamarind, Thai Chili. Very delicious also but maybe 2nd to the Hai Hai. We had the salt & pepper fried shiitakes to share with their delicious dipping sauce, these recently replaced their salt & pepper tofu (which I will miss tremendously) They are good but the tofu was amazing! I guess change is ok, maybe they will bring the tofu back one day. We shared these along with Crispy Sweet Potatoes - Tom & fried sweet potatoes, tom yum mayo, Thai basil, scallion,fresno chili, lime leaf, sesame seeds. They appeared slightly burned but did not taste burned, we asked and that is how they are meant to be. We all ordered the Vietnamese crepes, they offer them 2 ways - pork belly & shrimp -shitake mushroom & squash You make these at the table with lettuce, sprouts and mint leaves. The filling consists of Crispy turmeric & Coconut milk rice flour crepe, bean sprouts, onion, served with lettuce, herbs nuoc char and should be eaten like a lettuce wrap. This place is always busy and I really think you need to make a reservation to be assured be seated. They have indoor, outdoor patio open air and outdoor patio covered roof. Not gonna lie. I hate fusion. I especially hate Asian fusion... also hate places that do a bunch of different cuisines that have little to nothing to do with each other. SO I was bound to hate this place... But nah... it was pretty good. They dragged me here, kicking and screaming. But ultimately I'm glad we went. There was nothing overly impressive in my opinion. 5 years ago I gave Hai Hai a five star review. Sadly last night it was not. The service was excellent from hosts to servers but the food was underwhelming. My adult children enjoyed the cocktails and mocktails. We liked the calamari but the Brussels sprouts were mushy. My son was disappointed in the sticky rice which I adored in the past. My daughter and I had the shrimp and grits. They were flavorful but sooooo spicy that we were actually uncomfortable. The best item was the bread pudding which was epic. I was in town for the week visiting friends and we wanted to try a new restaurant so after a vote we decided Hai Hai was the place for the night. We met at 8pm on the spacious patio for a late dinner and drinks. Upon arrival it was odd that the server knew who we were meeting as we pointed directly to our party. The patio was quite expansive but the tables/chairs were too close together for my liking the table behind us kept hitting our backs. We ordered a few items to share for a family style meal. We shared the spring rolls, Brussels, calamari and pork ribs. Two of us tried a cocktail as well. The Brussel sprouts were really good but there wasn't anything super special about the combo/pairing. The pork skewers were really good full of flavor (you get three skewers in a serving). I expected the spring rolls to be fried but realized I misread the description the plus here was the dipping sauce. I'm not a huge fan of calamari so I tried just a bite and it was as expected. I went inside to use the restroom and the inside decor was a beautiful beachy or jungle like vibe with an extra long bar and well lit bathrooms. I still dream about this meal. Hai Hai is a James Beard nominated restaurant (think step down from Michelin) for a reason!! Pan fried chive cakes: (Thai chive rice cakes, pea purée, soy vinegar sauce GF/V) Crispy, chewy, and so satisfying these pancakes paired with the creamy pea purée is giving Vietnamese hummus + pita but even better. Balinese Cauliflower: (Macerated kale and bean sprouts, infused coconut cream, spicy samba with Thai chili and fried shallots, herbs, lime leaf GF/V) SPICE ALERTThe crispy, savory shallots and lime added a nice crunch and tang to this dish, but this truly set my mouth on fire. Worth the pain though. Balinese chicken thigh: (Macerated kale and bean sprouts, coconut rice, infused coconut cream, crispy shallot skin, lime leaf, spicy samba with Thai chili and fried shallots GF) Given the similar name, expectedly spicy but not near the same level. The coconut rice felt like a buttery hug best enjoyed in a bite with the crispy chicken skin and absolutely delicious kale and bean salad. The food was AMAZING! Our table got the Malaysian fried shrimp, Hanoi sticky rice, beef rendang (x2), and the Laksa shrimp and grits. Everything was a 10/10. My personal favorite was the beef rendang- spicy and so good! We also all got different drinks and they were all great. Our service sucked. Where to begin? This is a really nice restaurant in the Northeast Distrcit. However, it's a casual dining experience. The interior reminds me of a beach vacation. We ordered an assortment of appetizers and meals to share among the table. My favorites were the crispy rice salad with pork belly, the beef rendang, and the Balinese chicken thigh. I'm not really even sure how it's physically possible that I haven't left a review for this place in the 5 to 7 years. I've been coming here. I'm pretty sure I came here during the first few months. It was even open and genuinely has never disappointed me even once. Whenever somebody comes in from out of town, I have to bring them there because it's just such a great experience. They have the best mix of creative Asian flavors that I've ever had in my life. A lot of the items on first bite leave you so curious you're not sure if you like them and the second and third bite you were absolutely in love with them. They cocktails are really nice as well. This rating is a 4.5 so very close to a 5 star experience! First off the ambience of Hai Hai is super endearing and charming. The vibes are tropical and reminiscent of places in south east asia. The atmosphere and liveliness of the restaurant also makes it a place you want to be on a night for dinner, as the placed is packed to the brim with customers! We got the tea leaf salad, shrimp toast and spring rolls for appetizers and everything hit the spot for me. Full of flavor and textures are on point! The dishes visually are well prepared but kind of appear "unassuming" and like any local viet spot but when you put it in your mouth it becomes a flavor explosion full of depth. The star of the show for me was my entree, the bailenese chicken rice dish with coconut curry. Again, it just "looks" like a regular rice dish but when I tasted it I was overwhelmed (in a good way) with flavor and texture- and omg the chicken and was cooked to perfection. This is how ALL places should prepare their chicken in my opinion. It was so juicy, moist on the inside while maintaining the char on the outside. If you come, GET THIS DISH! The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is for the service. While it was attentive and proficient- there is a only 90 minute dining limit and it felt like the wait staff made that really clear in their non-verbals - it felt like they were rushing us a bit to order and get out of there within the time limit. The Southeast Asian food here is a treat. The service was great and all our dishes were satisfying. The spring rolls are a great appetizer. Not the best we've had, but a solid choice. The entrees were all tasty and I enjoyed the Hanoi Sticky Rice. My dining partners liked the Beef Rendang and Balinese Chicken Thigh. My personal favorite was the Vietnamese Coffee Pot de Creme (I would go back just for that). One of the best meals I've had all year. As a group of 6 we got a huge sampling of the menu, which is totally doable with a group that size as the menu itself isn't too deep. The Beef Rendang and the crispy rice salad were so god damn good. Though a note to the Minnesotan palate it's spicy spicy. Like very hot. Staff were all sweethearts. Was amazed by how well priced everything was for a spot that just got a Beard Award. A testament to quality and great portion size not having to come at the expense of well being super expensive! This is the BEST spot! Hai Hai does such a good job of transporting you to southeast Asia with the tropical plants and nods to the colorful plastic stools you'd find at Vietnamese street restaurants. The plates and bamboo serving trays reminded me of childhood growing up in a Vietnamese household. Come for the atmosphere, stay for the cocktails! DECOR: I often recommend this spot to friends for a cool date night spot, or for out-of-towners. Especially in the winter, the interior is alive with green plants and a Southeast Asian ambiance that will transport you to warmer memories. COCKTAILS: You really can't go wrong with their extensive cocktail list - but I like their rum creations! They also have spirit-free options. The ambiance is a fun colorful plant filled restaurant that's perfect for a good time and good food with friends and family. I've never had a bad time with service here - one time we were sat down, ordered, ate, and left all within an hour during prime dinner time! My go to is always the crispy rice salad with pork belly but this time we wanted to sample a bunch of stuff so we also got the fried mushrooms, fried Brussels sprouts, and the green curry. Thoughts on each dish: Crispy Rice Salad with Pork Belly - 5+ stars it's truly a one of a kind dish that I've never not ordered! The crispy rice chunks, savory pork belly, fresh cucumber and herbs are combined with some spice and lime for the perfect dish. It hits every salty, spicy, refreshing note you want in a meal! Brussels Sprouts - also 5 stars! A brand new item I tried from the menu and they might have been even better than the crispy rice somehow! They were cooked TO PERFECTION and the sauce was a great acidic addition that made these so addicting to eat! One day I'll try to replicate them to make at home but until then I'll be ordering them often! Fried mushrooms - 4.5 stars these were so good and only got better at we ate them - not quite a 5 since on their own while the mushrooms were good they were a touch salty, but adding the sweet and fresh dipping sauce balanced it perfectly Green Curry with Coconut Rice - 5 stars LOVED this coconut curry! For sure one of the best I've had. The spice level was perfect (actually had a bit of spice) and the rice was a great balance to it. The food here is always so good!!! I came here on a week night for a date night with my boyfriend. it was packed already at 5pm. Our server was great and very helpful on what dishes to pick out and which were her favorite. We had the Collard Greens and the squash dumplings for starters and both we're absolutely delicious. My favorite of the two has to be the squash dumplings because of the broth they are served in. For our maina we split the fried chicken plate and the Sticky rice bowl. The sticky rice bowl is a staple when i eat here. It has so many greta flavors and textures with the pickled daikon and carrots with the pork close and chinese sausage. The fried chicken was super crispy and the coconut curry filling sauce was to die for. We finished the night with the saigon cinnamon vietnamese coffee tiramisù. This is my second time coming to Hai Hai and I must say it has not disappointed either time. The restaurant has a great vibe, and, despite being constantly busy (I would recommend making reservations ahead of time), it is still easy to have a conversation whether you're inside her on one of the patios. I would recommend any of the cocktails... Between both my visits someone from my party has ordered almost every touch on the menu, and no one has been disappointed. One of our servers recommended requesting that you mix the two slushy's together and that was a big hit. As for the food, one of the draws of hai hai was that it was vegetarian friendly. We got the tofu and replaced some of the proteins with the crabs substitute, and they were all great. At my most recent visit we ordered a soft boiled egg appetizer and it was a huge hit. Other popular dishes that I've gotten included the crêpes, chive pancakes, and lettuce wraps. This was my third time around at hai hai and it's definitely a fun spot to go to when looking for a place that has a hip twist on Southeast Asian food - the greenery and presentation of their food is all part of the experience. We tried some different dishes this time family-style and I loved the shrimp and pork belly Vietnamese crepe, it comes with a variety of greens that go well with sauce and crispy pancake-like texture of the crepe. Drinks, particularly the BA n/a drink and the Bestest, were delicious and interesting too. We sat out on the patio and the ambiance was absolutely lovely. Crispy without being dry and tons of flavor. Chicken Khao soi was so good- dynamic flavors, rich and so satisfying on a winter night. Our group loved everything- friends got the Balinese chicken thigh and the crispy rice with pork belly (nam khao- can vouch that this was delicious). Finished with delicious chocolate racine cake. My favorite spot is at the bar, with wide counter space and wide seats. It might feel a little "crowded" whether you're inside or out, but just think of it as the vibe. We really enjoyed the: - HANOI STICKY RICE - Probably biased since we love pork floss and Chinese sausage. Overall from the rice to the combo of all the ingredients, it was a very well rounded dish. Flavors were cohesive without being too complex. - BALINESE CAULIFLOWER - What a great kick, well cooked, and the coconut cream wasn't overwhelming. These were good: - SON IN LAW EGGS - This was tasty, yolk was relatively soft boiled. - PORK RIBS TOCINO - This came with two large ribs, well cooked, but flavor was familiar and nothing to rave about. - THAI BANANA BLOSSOM SALAD - Spicy! No banana flavors incase you were wondering. Refreshing and I would recommend it if you like medium+ spiciness, appreciated the shrimp in here. Could be a filling salad if you finish the whole thing. - SALT & PEPPER FRIED TOFU - This wasn't memorable, but I was also a few drinks in. This was when we came back for drinks and a couple apps. Not a fan: - SQUID KINILAW - We literally took a bite and couldn't finish it. It was so underwhelming on presentation and way too coconut forward in taste. The squid itself was flavorless, just tasted boiled, flavors were NOT cohesive. The sesame shrimp chip could've been easier to eat with. Do not rec this dish. Dranks: - SMOKY IN SIAM - This was subtly smoky, but the tea taste was present. A bit bitter, which I like, so reconsider if bitterness ain't your thang. Presents like an Old Fashioned. - HANOI SLING - You do taste the plum, not so much the lychee. Came in a stemless wine glass. It was good, but not a flavor profile I'd revisit. - SUNDOWN IN SAIGON - I had a sip of this and it was fruity, tart, and passionfruit forward. I liked it! - POSTCARDS FROM PALAWAN - Had a sip of this. Smoky mezcal drink with a nice kick. This might be one of my favorites. Will be back! I was so excited to come here, I have heard amazing things and finally made a reservation. Parking around here is very hard, be warned. The place is very cute inside, the environment was great, most of the staff seemed super friendly. The two people tables were VERY close to each other...like I had to try and not accidentally touch the other table. Very uncomfortable, felt like I was constantly in two other people's conversations. The mocktails we got were okay, not great. I would pass on these. We started with the shrimp fritter app and it was really good! That was the best part of the whole meal unfortunately. For the entree, I got the chicken and rice and my husband got the Beef Laab Wraps. The chicken and rice was so so bland. I added all the sauces they gave me to it so I could taste something. Not good. My husband's beef wraps were salty. You have to eat this with sticky rice to not taste salt. Very very disappointing. Neither one of us walked away happy from our meal. I know that this place has great reviews, people love it....maybe it was an off night on the food? I am just confused and disappointed and still hungry for food with more flavor. If you are coming for the atmosphere and drinks, I get it. If you want a good meal, go somewhere else. read more

Hai hai is a cute little restaurant, the decor reminds me of south east Asia, there's a lot of greenery and bamboo. They do have parking but it's very small, park along the street. Cocktails are delightful, very meticulously mixed and aptly named. On this trip I tried "Best life" and "Last Day in Paradise," Best life is a mix of sweet, tart and a hint of umami while Last day in paradise had a balance flavor of lychee and pear. Highly recommend both drinks! Food was good, there were dishes our table enjoyed more than others. The orders included, Coconut Shrimp Toast, Pork Ribs, Beef Laab Lettuce wraps, Crispy Rice Salad, Vietnamese Crepe and Beef Rendang. My favorite dish of the even was Beef Rendang, slow cooked in curry, tamarind and lemon grass- flavors were balanced, bold and spicy, a fantastic combination. Definitely worth a trip for! read more
