Been wanting a shag cut for years and my hair stylist for over 20 years always discouraged me from doing it. I researched other salons and luckily found Nick at Sweet Jane Salon. The salon is nicely decorated and has only 2 chairs the other is his partner and co-owner, which keeps the normal salon noise at a minimum. Upon meeting Nick he listened and looked at the photos I brought and asked me "what do you like the most about her cut?" . Historically I would hear from my stylist that my hair wasn't like the model in the picture but Nick did not say that. He started cutting my hair with a straight razor and I was enthralled with his precision and knowledge. This cut is what they are known for. Needless to say I LOOOOOOOOVE my new shag cut. Writing this review was not a decision , but I feel it's necessary to share my experience. I had a haircut at this salon about two months ago. While Norman was very friendly and the salon itself is charming, my experience was ultimately disappointing. Norman took his time cutting my hair, which I appreciated. However, I believe one of the main issues was his unfamiliarity with my hair type. I have thick, wavy/curly hair, and despite his efforts to add layers and thin it out, the result was disappointing. Initially, when he styled my hair at the salon, it didn't look too bad. However, once I washed it at home, my hair looked terrible. The excessive layering and thinning left my hair puffy around my head but thin around my neck. To make matters worse, I spent $180 for this terrible haircut. I usually love wearing my hair down, but since this haircut, I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail almost every day . I called Norman the day after the haircut, and after several attempts to reach him, he mentioned he would set up a time to teach me how to style my hair (he never followed through). I even asked him to cut it all short to eliminate the layers, but nothing came of it. The damage is done. I wore a ponytail on my daughter's birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and in all the photos that break my heart. I decided to write this review to caution others with wavy hair like mine. Being new to San Diego, I didn't really know where to go for the type of haircut I've been wanting. Ever since my first review of Sweet Jane, Nick has continued to bless my hair for the last 2 years!!! I've been through so much from highlights, red, layers/shags, to a cute lil bob. Nick and Norm are amazing at doing hair and making sure you feel comfortable and pampered. Each appointment I come in with ideas and reference pictures, Nick continues to execute them PERFECTLY. He always takes the time to understand what you want with your hair. At my most recent appointment, I was between a look I've done before and another look that was completely new to me, a bi-level bob. I was initially hesitant to go for the bob, but Nick ensured that the length was 1) what I wanted and 2) suited my face shape and hair type. Going for a new haircut can be super intimidating, but Nick is so encouraging and will address any concerns you have about the length, styling, etc. I am more than excited to try something new and play around with my hair with him. Lovely salon and received one of the best haircuts I've had in a long time from Norman.

Had a bittersweet experience at this salon. Norman gave me a lovely haircut. He was detail oriented and framed my face so well with the bangs he cut. I came back a few weeks later for a bang trim. I booked with Nicholas since Norman didn't have availability for a few weeks. He spent less than 10 minutes cutting my bangs and didn't hesitate to send me on my way when I told him that the bangs turned out different than I expected. He didn't even section my hair, just brushed em behind my ears. When I was styling the next day, the bangs looked like they were cut slanted and uneven between the two sides. There were multiple emails/texts requesting a review, where I sent a message about my bangs and inquired about a refund bc I didn't want to drive another 30min back there and I had already attempted to fix them. Nick was open to a refund, but I just wish it was done right the first time. read more

This is the best experience I have ever had at a salon, I am extremely satisfied with (1) the COVID precautions, (2) my haircut, and (3) the customer service. (1) Immediately upon entering the Salon my stylist, Norman, took my temperature and gave me hand sanitizer to use. I was the only person in the salon getting my hair done and the only other people inside were Norman, and his parter, who is also the other owner of Sweet Jane Salon. Additionally, we all kept masks on the entire time and the hair washing station was set up on the sweet and comfortable back patio. I felt that Sweet Jane Salon made my safety their priority. (2) This is the best haircut experience I have ever had. I explained to Norman that I have been self conscious about the texture of my hair and that stylists in the past have convinced me that it is only pretty if it is blown out to be perfectly straight - Norman listened to me, truly listened. Even when I wasn't really able to describe what I was looking for, Norman worked with me to chose a look that would enhance my natural waves, and fit my personality/ lifestyle. (3) I left Sweet Jane Salon, feeling confident about myself and uplifted by my experience with Norman. Norman taught me how to embrace my natural waves, style without heat, and properly diffuse my hair. This was my first salon experience that celebrated my hair as it was when I walked in, and just helped me learn to embrace and love it (instead of acting like it was something I had to 'fix'). Norman also ordered a particular Curl Cream for me, that I'll be back to pick up soon. We talked about his philosophy in his profession to always be growing and learning - and it showed! Nicholas and Norman are officially the sweetest people in San Diego. Let's start with parking though: It's Hillcrest, it's in a great location. Parking is totally do-able, but give yourself some time in case you need to park in the neighborhood. Moving to the experience itself though: The shop is SUPER cute, cozy (2 chairs, truly wonderful for maintaining safety during COVID). The decor is lovely and inviting and fresh and they display the products they use and recommend. The chairs are comfy and lovely but may be a tight fit for larger bodies (I may be wrong, it might have some more wiggle room. If not, I'd love to see this become more maintstream to have more body sizes be able to access it). AND NICHOLAS AND NORMAN ARE ANGELS ON EARTH! They are kind, warm, welcoming, sweet, funny, and of course TALENTED. I saw Nicholas after my friend got the CUTEST haircut and I legitimately do not live in SD anymore (shoutout Bay Area) and when I was visiting SD I booked my travel time around getting an appointment here. No joke. Worth it. I was greeted so kindly and warmly and was directed to my seat, then we talked about my hair and my hair goals. I wanted to go a good bit shorter and Nicholas did a really wonderful job explaining what would work well for my hair type and goals, then he got to work! I could not be happier with my cut. I have wavy hair and struggle to style it well, but the cut I got is effortless to style and has so many options! I don't know how he does it but he is a genius. Nick is so helpful with figuring out the best style for your face and achieving exactly what you want. Since our every first appointment I've felt really comfortable and trusted his recommendations. He takes the time to talk through what you want and explains what he's going to do. In the last two years I've tried out some of styles I've always wanted to experiment with and I've loved the results every time. I have never liked the way I looked with bangs until my very first cut here. During the cut Nick explains easy ways I can style the look at home. He's even taught me how bring out the most volume and texture without heating tools. They carry an amazing selection of hair and beauty products, some of his recommendations have become my all time favorites. My hair always still looks great weeks/months after our appointments. So happy to wake up this morning and just run my hands through my hair and that is it. Reminiscent of a Meg Ryan messy fun look Carefree. Of course, I still have to wash it. Now back to this little Salon that is absolutely adorable, clean, unpretentious, smelling good, no overpowering candles or hair color. Upon entering, my new stylist Norman was well worth the wait of a almost 2 months due to as we all know covid restrictions. He was maskless and let me know that he had his shots. He has such great energy and was so genuine from the beginning to the end. We gave each other a big hug and got on with the work ahead. We both agreed that it was probably Isabella Rossellini and that he couldn't make me look like her although I asked. Got my hair cut with Norman recently, and let me tell you the experience I had with him was awesome! From start to finish he made me feel welcome. Norman is super friendly and easy going. The environment they have created at this salon is so calm and relaxing. It's perfect! Yesterday, I got the haircut I have been wanting for years. No, it is not quarantine talk nor me trying to help out a local business -- Nicholas exceeded my expectations above and beyond. The salon is easy to locate , very clean. Nick and Norman are very responsible with scheduling, taking temperatures, and using sanitization. One haircut here gave me a bad hair day for 6 + months. They are not conservative at all and have no problem completely chopping your hair. They might make it look nice at first with a blow out, but unless you're a professional hair stylist the cuts they are doing are very advanced for styling. I wasn't aware of this and had terrible bangs I had no idea what to do with, choppy layers, some sort of wolf fringe cut that I did not ask for. If you're looking for an advanced cut and have the means to style every single day come here.
