Went to Nana for a balayage and she is the most detail-oriented, thoughtful stylist I have been to in my years of trying different stylists. Her technique is also a true balayage that blends seamlessly and gives hair wonderful dimension, and I'm impressed by her ability to lighten hair in one setting then toning to get Asian hair to a more ashy, cool-toned since Asian black-brown hair tends to pull red/orangey by nature. You can see her work on instagram @hair_by_na_na She uses super quality products too like schwarzkopf and olaplex. I left with my hair feeling really soft and healthy despite the bleaching. I also like hearing from stylists what they recommend as maintenance. She was very thorough and detailed with her aftercare tips! - No shampooing for 3 days (she said water only is ok - not too cold or hot). This allows the cuticles to close while the color is getting deposited into your hair. - Start using a purple shampoo in 3 weeks to help keep brassiness at bay. - Use sulfate-free colored hair friendly shampoo/conditioner like Pureology. - Use something like Olaplex or K18 to keep hair strong and healthy. - In 2 months, come back for toning to refresh color. My balayage and cut took about 4.5 hours. Nana and Sean work together with the foiling and painting so it speeds things up. I went to Hair by Nana on May 11, 2024, and I still can't get over how badly she ruined my hair. After almost a year of struggling to grow it out and having other stylists attempt to fix the mess Nana made, I've finally decided to write this review. Nana does NOT listen to what you ask for. I had light blonde balayage for 10 years and specifically asked to go LIGHTER, bringing in multiple specific inspo photos for BOTH the cut and color. Instead, she made my hair darker--completely brunette. I clearly told Nana that if the color wouldn't lift, I would KEEP my previous color and just bring that up to the grown-out roots. Instead of following my requests, she used a permanent dark dye that made it nearly impossible for other stylists to correct. Every time another stylist tried to lighten it back, the bleach wouldn't lift due to the dark color Nana used. The haircut was a DISASTER. It was choppy, uneven, and left me with a HUGE DISCONNECT. The back was randomly long while the front looked like a bob, making my hair look like TWO completely different lengths--not even a proper layer. I drove all the way from Los Angeles to Tustin to see her, thinking I would receive professional, high-quality service. Instead, I got the complete opposite. After realizing how bad my hair was, I went to several hairstylists for consultations. Every single one of them confirmed how badly both the color and cut were ruined. Since I had been light blonde for 10 years before Nana darkened my hair, I can't go back to the light shade I was anytime soon. The permanent dark dye Nana used made lifting the color nearly impossible without causing major damage. She later claimed my hair was damaged from previous treatments, but no other stylist told me my hair was damaged until AFTER Nana messed it up. The picture I included was taken the same day of my appointment. As soon as I got home, I washed and dried my hair to see what it actually looked like without the styling--and that's when I realized just how bad it was. Nana tried to cover up the bad cut by curling my hair excessively right after finishing. As if ruining my hair wasn't enough, Nana was also extremely rude and unprofessional. She had so much attitude the entire time, didn't greet me when I arrived, didn't say thank you, and didn't even acknowledge me when I left. She made me feel completely unwelcome and uncomfortable throughout my entire appointment. She rushed through the entire process as if she didn't care. The original plan was to do a full balayage, but when I got there, we changed it to a partial balayage because she said my roots weren't that grown out and I didn't need a full service. When it came time to pay, she made me feel like I was being rushed out the door, even though we finished at the expected time. Despite how uncomfortable she made me feel, I still tipped her for her time and service--yet she didn't even say thank you. Not a single word. I didn't reach out to Nana afterward because she made me feel extremely uncomfortable during the appointment with her attitude and unprofessional behavior. However, looking back, I should have contacted Nana immediately about how unhappy I was and asked for a refund or compensation for the damage she caused. Additionally, since I am located in Los Angeles and Nana is in Tustin, I had already made a huge commute just to see her. It wasn't worth it for me to drive more than two hours there and two hours back AGAIN for a fix when I no longer trusted Nana with my hair. I am beyond frustrated. It's been almost a year since Nana ruined my hair, and it still isn't fully fixed. I now have to grow out the sections where she put permanent dye before I can even attempt to go lighter again. I have to wait for my hair to grow out just to fix the choppy, disconnected haircut she gave me. This experience has been a nightmare, and it will take a long time before my hair is back to how I originally wanted it. Months later, I am still dealing with the aftermath of Nana's work. Writing this review was necessary to ensure others are aware of my experience and can make an informed decision before booking with her. If you care about your hair and want a stylist who listens, respects you, and actually knows what they're doing, DO NOT GO TO HAIR BY NANA. RESPONSE: I want to clarify that I was not 30 minutes late for my appointment. I informed Nana ahead of time that I would arrive later due to my commute from Los Angeles to Tustin, and Nana agreed to change the appointment to 10:30 AM. I went to three different stylists after a botched balayage severely damaged my hair and Nana was the only one who was able to effectively trim off all of the dead ends and tone my hair to a lovely natural dark brown color. I've never really gone to a salon before to get my hair done and I was extremely nervous upon entering the salon. Thankfully Nana and her partner were extremely welcoming. In the beginning she made sure to double check on what I wanted with examples. We shared a lot of laughs together while in the salon, making the session feel like it went by fast. Despite being inexperienced with coloring my hair, I could tell that she really took care of my hair and made sure that it was bleached evenly before applying the color.
