I went to the Hair Cuttery in Burtonsville, Maryland. When I arrived, I was sent to a man who seemed friendly enough. However, I could not understand him and his English was not the best. I am a woman and had very long hair, to around my hip. I was very happy with my hair length, but had a few dead ends I wanted trimmed off. I told the stylist I wanted 3 inches off, and he seemed to understand. Without wetting or washing my hair at all, even though he was supposed to and my hair was straight but styled in uneven lose waves that day, he began to unevenly cut around 6 inches off of my hair, even though I had asked for 3. He motioned towards a mirror asking if I liked it when he was finished. It was completely uneven, and my long hair that I loved was now shorter than I wanted. I immediately requested another stylist to fix it, but she discovered that underneath my hair, he had cut about 10 inches off. She offered to leave it, but I didn't want horribly uneven hair, so she cut it. When I realized how short she cut it, I was devastated. My beautiful long hair was now shoulder length, and it will take me at least 3 years to grow it back. This was a traumatic experience and I will never step foot in a Hair Cuttery again. read more

I had a hair disaster at Briggs Chaney Plaza due to a stylist not listening. I placed an SOS call to the district manager who suggested I visit another location to get my haircut fixed. Jennifer works at the Old Columbia Pike location. She was friendly and helpful. She listened to my concerns and understood that she was fixing someone else's mistake. She pulled my hair back to show me all of the uneven areas. She explained that she was going to have to cut off some hair to make everything even. I thought she did a great job at repairing things. The local and district managers made a visit while my hair was being reworked. They were genuinely concerned about my experience and went out of their way to help me. I received services at Hair Cuttery in Burtonsville, for about eight months from Ekta who was friendly and gave great service. She went out on maternity leave in May of 2018, and I began going to another stylist. On one occasion in September 2018, she apparently became overwhelmed with trying to service myself and two other customers concurrently (the stylists seem to be into volume versus individualized service), and put a relaxer in my hair and permanent color. As a result, my edges,front of my hair, and middle of my hair fell out. It has taken seven months for some of my hair to grow back using various hair growth vitamins and oils. I've basically stopped going here because I continue to be disappointed in my hair cut. I still go to Hoi, but he uses special fancy blades, which are not the same length as normal clipper blades. Trust me, I know what a "4" looks like and this is just a bit too short to be called a "4." The other stylists are hit or miss, though I have had some good cuts there. But more often than not, I'm disappointed. Now, I find myself going to the Hair Cuttery in Maple Lawn, but that one can have such long lines. I wish I could give no stars. Wait, the girl that did my hair was nice, so I guess they can get a star for that. Hair Cuttery for me is very hit or miss. I have been to some locations with great stylists, although they generally don't stay long. But they have one thing going for them that I keep returning for-the walk in service. My schedule is all over the place and often I won't know when I will have time for a hair appointment until it's right upon me. I digress... This was my first try at the Burtonsville location. I had been frequenting HC for a few months, and was getting the same style/color combination the whole time, which was in the computer. So I felt confident that it wouldn't get messed up. Upon entering, the stylist who began to take me was logging me into the computer, when I heard another mention to her that she was getting off soon, and did she want someone else to help me (I had not requested anyone specifically). She shot that person down, and said she would take care of me. One thing I noticed off the bat was that this location was not as tidy as others, and the staff were pretty unprofessional. But these things won't bother me IF I like the finished product. I normally get my roots touched up and highlights put in. Every other HC I've been to, the stylist puts the highlights/foils in first, and then paints the roots around them, so that the highlights are natural looking and close to my roots. This stylist, however, painted my entire scalp with root color first, and then did the highlights on top of that. Needless to say, the highlight color didn't stick, since there was already color on the hair. After a wash and very quick cut (long layers), she told me that she had to leave and therefore couldn't dry my hair. Since I couldn't tell how bad it looked wet, I said that was fine, and I'd let it air dry. I should have waited and had it dried, because once home, I hated it. It looked very brassy (I later found out that she should have used a toner) and the highlights looked like they were done weeks before since they weren't close to the roots, plus the cut was very poorly done. Basically, I paid $150 (plus tip) for a very choppy hair cut and brassy hair. HC does have a smile back guarantee, but to be honest, I didn't want to trust my hair to this location again. I got highlights yesterday. First I was asked to come earlier than my scheduled appt which was fine, I did. I choose a red color that I wanted...2.5 hours later my hair was blonde/slightly brown. As nice as the lady was the entire time (reason for 2 stars vs 1), she said it is red and looks great. When I said it is not what I expected and asked if she can fix it, she said no. She said that red is hard for ethnic hair but I've gotten it red before at other places. Really disappointing and will not be going back or recommending to anyone. They are not going to fix it so will have to figure out what to do. I honestly don't even want to go back and put even more chemicals in my hair (and what it is turns out worse?!). Edit 10/8 - I called the customer service on Friday and the regional manager called me back in one hour and scheduled time for me to get my hair fixed with the manager. This was my first time here at this hair cuttery location. I was referred by a close friend to try out one of their stylists named Meron. I will never regret this decision. Soon as I walked in I was greeted and helped to her chair right away. She made sure I felt welcome and comfortable in her hands even though she gave a bit of a shy aura. She was a very kind lady that showed she knew what she was doing. She definitely knew how to handle my natural curly (hard to manage) hair in the best way possible. I asked for a blowout and got more than what I expected. She had also given me a small haircut to best fit my face. My end results were beautiful!!!!!! I left looking like a celebrity. Be Aware. I seriously think the state board needs to pay a visit to this particular hair cuttery. The 70 year old man cutting my hair seemed like a virgin stylist, and he didn't even listen to me when I told him I wanted one inch taken off. The cut was not even. I think his license was fake. It was a horrible experience and advise everyone to think twice before visiting this hair cuttery, especially for JUST a basic hair cut. I went into the Burtonsville Hair Cuttery for a blow dry of my shoulder length hair. I have been here several times -- each time it was $16 and my hair was actually a little longer then. I went in today and the stylist told me it would be $26! Why? because my hair was "wavy". I told her I did not want an iron used on it and I have always been charged $16 -- she said, "Sorry it is $26". I left and she clearly cared less (I think her name was Sima) -- definite attitude. So I went to the Hair Cuttery in Maple Lawn. I asked how much and they immediately said "$16". I told my stylist about what happened in Burtonsville and she was mystified -- she said your hair is not that long and it is certainly not that thick. So I'd be interested -- does HC just let its stylists decide what to charge????? Never again will I go near that stylist or shop. Oh and btw, it seems not to be a surprise that the Maple Lawn shop is twice as busy. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I have never been so disappointed over a haircut before in my life. I brought in a photo of what I wanted done and the stylist didn't even look at it. He cut off at least 3 inches more than I asked for and did so completely unevenly. I have random sections in the front that are longer than everywhere else. My bangs look like they were cut by a child. Apart from the ridiculous cut I left with, I was in pain the entire time. I had long hair which tangles easy so I expected some discomfort. What I didn't expect was for the stylist to use his hands to literally rip the knots apart, sometimes tearing chunks of my hair out at a time. Usually freshly cut hair has healthy looking ends- not mine! Not after that. He also came close to ripping my industrial piercing out of my ear several times. It sticks out and can get in the way so its understandable that it would get caught but you'd think he'd realize after the first time not to yank on it. By the time he was done with the cut and blowdry he had completely forgotten that I'd asked for my hair to be flat ironed as well, which was probably for the best. By that point I just wanted to leave. Once I got home I realized my scalp was bleeding in a few places. I left the Hair Cuttery over two hours ago and my head is still sore. Needless to say I'll never be going back here. This place is seriously the worst. read more

I didnt have an appointment but the salon was empty when i came in. I was looking to start the journey to having my hair blonde. I have naturally brown hair. I was immediately taken to a chair and i picked the color i wanted i told the stylist i wanted my whole head dyed and the stylist went and brought another stylist over to convince me to get highlights instead because it will look blonde but have "dimension" and better They're the experts i thought and i agreed. After three hours of getting dyed i was sitting in the shampoo chair waiting for my stylist to come back to wash the dye out. She brought back the book of colors and pointed to a color i did not choose and told me that they used that one instead because it will look better and asked if its okay! They just spent 3 hours dyeing my hair and then they ask me if it was okay to use a different color than the one i wanted! Now i haven't seen my hair yet so i don't know what to think. When i finally get my hair washed and see myself in the mirror i was dumbstruck. The highlights look so stringy and terrible. I told the stylist its not what i wanted then everyone that worked there one by one came by to tell me how beautiful it was and how good it looks. And how hard she worked to make it look like this and i dont like it. I was so upset and made to feel bad that i didnt like it i just left the salon. It wasnt until i got home i noticed the dye on the back of my head is way lighter than everywhere else and not a consistent color. I dont have the slightest idea how to fix this. read more

Some of the reviews on this site must be fake or from people who complain just for the sake of complaining. I am 56 years old and I've been to Hair Cutteries all over the country, and this one in Burtonsville is the best by far that I have encountered. Elsa, Kiyomi and Joe have cut my hair a few times and they are very, very good. But Esther and Mr. Hoi are true artists. No one in this country has done a better job on my hair than those two. They both have huge followings and it is not for nothing, it is because they are incredible. Everyone at the store is friendly and very efficient. Customer Service is excellent. read more
