I was looking for a salon in the DFW area that *specialized* in Japanese hair straightening since I try to get it done at least once a year for ease of maintenance. I typically drive to Austin to get it done, but wanted to see if there were options locally in the area - I've been to a few Korean salons in Carrollton, but the straightening perm doesn't last very long, and I've even gotten a chemical burn on the tip of my ear due to them not being careful and rushing. Hiro does a great job getting it done right the first time, is efficient, and explains the process + recommended hair maintenance / touch ups after the perm is completed both verbally and through text for reference. Japanese straightening perms are not cheap (and haven't been cheap in the last 10 years), but ultimately you get what you pay for. Pro tip: be honest with Hiro for any previous perm, bleaching, color, or treatment you've had recently that may affect the overall quality / result of the Japanese hair straightening, and Hiro will adjust his treatment keeping your hair's health in mind. ヒロさん、ありがとう! read more

A few months ago I asked a friend of mine where she got her hair done, as it always looked very healthy and vibrant even though she had it different colors. She pointed me towards Hiro's Instagram. He promotes leaving your hair with no/minimal damage which is very important to me as someone with thinner hair! Making an appointment with him is very easy and he always responds very quickly. He takes time to ask you for references and descriptions of what you're looking for. His new location is very comfortable! It's more of a one on one with nice lofi music playing. If you have ask him for recommendations on what to do with your hair, he takes his time to analyze it and give you his professional opinion. I finally made my first appointment with Hiro after following his Instagram page for over two years and found out he was opening his own shop. Growing up in NYC I've had my fair share of Japanese hairstylists over the years. Hiro's shop is inside the Mattison Avenue building and he has his own suite so it's private and quiet. One of the first things I did after I was seated was fill out a client questionnaire. After reviewing the form, Hiro spent at least 20 - 25 min to examine my hair, get an understanding of what I was looking to get out of my appointment, what I wanted to achieve with my hair, and finally provide his professional insights on how to achieve the results while still keeping the hair healthy. I booked an appointment for hair coloring, haircut and treatment. Throughout the entire process from the consultation to the final result, Hiro was very professional and attentive and took his time to ensure that his client was provided a quality experience. Hiro is highly skilled in his profession and well versed with the color wheel and mixing colors to achieve beautiful coloring while minimizing damage with the treatments he applies. He even weighs his colors with a scale - that's how precise he is. He invests in quality Japanese products and uses the latest Japanese techniques. I was very impressed and happy with the results. Prior to my appointment with Hiro, my hair was dry and damaged from bleaching and other chemical processes but he made it soft and shiny. I have been coming to Hiro regularly for a few years now for haircut and color, but this was the last time for me, for several reasons. He is a nice person and can do his job well, but I have been dissatisfied recently and have lost patience. Firstly, the price has gone up considerably over time. I go to get all of my hair colored (one solid color) every two months, and this now costs me $190, not including gratuity. I usually come for my appointments after I get off work, so 5:00 or 5:30, and the appointments last from 1.5 to 2 hours most of the time. I think maybe he is tired at this point in the day since I am his last customer, so maybe he is not giving it his all, but ultimately he is the one allowing me to book an appointment at this time. He sped through my last cut and color and I was left with a very choppy, uneven haircut - I had to come back that weekend for him to fix it, resulting in my hair turning out shorter than I would like. His specialty is straight perms, and he tried numerous times to convince me to get it done, but my hair is wavy at best in my opinion and easy to straighten with a flat iron. Also, in the past couple years, he has offered a sort of conditioning treatment which originally was optional, but has since become an inseparable part of the coloring service thus making it more expensive. My hair is not very damaged or unmanageable and I don't think that I need this treatment every time I color my hair - I just have fine strands of hair that can get tangled easily. My hair is not especially thick either; in the below photos of my haircut, this is all of my hair pushed to the front. I'm not sure how exactly he has changed his methods, but after my last few visits I've left the salon with my hair looking greasy due to some kind of product buildup. I have attached a photo - this was right after my appointment. No, it's not wet. Unfortunately, I just end up going home and washing my hair directly after my appointment because I don't want it to look dirty, even though I know it's bad for the longevity of the hair dye. Long story short, Hiro is a good hair stylist when he puts in the effort and pays attention, but I'm not always very happy with how my hair turns out, so I can no longer justify the cost.
