*Note, the entrance is on the side of the parking lot opposite of the street.* Came early at 5 o'clock on a Thursday and we were the first in the restaurant, and the crowd started to arrive around 6, but it has a nice cozy ambiance and decor. The staff were ready and very helpful. I was visiting with my partner from San Francisco and unfamiliar with the menu, but looking for some sushi, so we got some recommendations from our waiter on popular special rolls to get. My partner and I both got the nigiri sushi gozen which each come with a special roll, but we wanted to try more, so we ultimately tried the baked lobster, firecracker, lemon flush, and pacific special rolls, all of which we opted for real crab meat. They were fabulous. My favorite was the lemon flush because of the very delightful and refreshing flavors while my partner's favorite was the pacific roll with the coconut shrimp. To be clear, I also loved the baked lobster roll which was a delicious baked roll and definitely recommend for those who enjoy a warm roll, and I enjoyed even more our firecracker roll. With the gozen, we got tasty nigiri sushi as well as delightful tempura, a great seaweed and cucumber salad, and nice warm miso soup. We weren't able to finish all of the tempura or salad with all the food, but not because we didn't enjoy them. We also got the sake flight with 4 kinds of sake. My partner and I chose different ones as our favorites for slightly different notes, with her preferring a slightly sweeter sake, but they were all worth buying a bottle of to take home. What a great find in Ojai. This place is fantastic. They had outdoor seating with plenty of distancing and shade from the heat. The service was great and the sushi really hit the spot. We had the Albacore Tataki roll, Pink lady roll and the pacific roll. My absolute favorite was the pink lady roll since the salmon was very fresh and all the flavors really came together. These rolls are really big so we were full after only three. The kids had the miso udon and salmon rolls that they devoured quickly. The prices are very reasonable and it's a very charming location. Fresh new space, same bad attitude. When they were in the old building, i assumed cranky old sushi chefs were just dinosaurs in an ever evolving space of food service so we stopped going there 3 years ago. Decided to give the fresh space a try and was met with the same bad attitude about accommodating someone gluten free. I wish we would have gotten up and left because it was clear me even asking was a nuisance to them. Don't bother if you are gluten free, they have nothing for you unless you just want plain fish and rice. It's not hard to have 1 thing on hand like a bottle of gluten free soy sauce or a sauce made with tamari. This is the third time dining here and I was hesitant coming for the third time just because the service is really lacking here. This restaurant has so much potential but the management is really struggling. There were two servers on shift and the restaurant booked out by 7:30- although they close at 8pm. The earlier the better when deciding to come and eat here as one of the servers mentioned. The wait time is very long, about an hour for two entrees. The salmon was already sold out by the time I put my order in. The servers seem so over it and they only have been working since 5:00, it was barely 7:00 when we arrived. Waited for about 35 min for two people. They didn't even ask to be put on a waitlist, probably hoping we would just eat somewhere other than. If Izakaya was open we would've definitely went there, but it was a Monday. I really hope they grow and find better management. read more

In addition, we were charged for "additional" eel sauce when neither of the rolls which traditionally have eel sauce (salmon skin, and eel avocado rolls) did not have any eel sauce on them. Was craving sushi and thanks to Yelp, this place popped up. Arrived around 8:30pm on Saturday, our large group was quickly seated. The waiter was hilarious. He went over some specials and highlighted the $5 sake, which ended up being one of the best suggestions. Apparently, the sake is made in-house and was delicious. The chef/owner stopped by our table to say hello and we tried to ask for the secret recipe/ingredient for the sake, but to no avail... it's still a secret. We decided to family style our meal so everyone ordered something different and we shared. Rolls ranged from rainbow roll, Ojai roll, caterpillar roll, lobster roll, and some other fun names. Most rolls were more or less similar, but slightly different. Sashimi was fresh, but more expensive. Then again, getting fresh fish in Ojai is probably a challenge in itself. Although we didn't come to celebrate a birthday, the waiter brought out a small ice cream with cake so we gave it to someone in our group who had a birthday few weeks prior. All the staff came out to sing. It was lovely. Food is affordable. Ambiance is nice. Service is wonderful. Yup, I'm a fan of Hakane Sushi. read more

REVIEW YOUR BILL! Before ordering our meal, we asked our waitress about the various sake options. We considered them and made our choice. At the end of the meal, we happened to review our bill. Not only were we billed for the sake we in fact ordered, but we discovered our waitress billed us for the very expensive sake she suggested, that we did not order. So how it got onto our bill in the first place is a mystery. But it less like an accident and more like a practiced scam. My husband and I went here for dinner tonight. I really wanted to try their coconut tempura shrimp to see if it was as good as it used to be before the changes. When we arrived we were greeted right away and got to pick any table we wanted. We sat down and our drink order was taken and filled promptly. Husband got a beef teriyaki dinner meal thing that came with soup and salad, as well as a roll. I got a roll, my coconut tempura shrimp and tried some of his soup and salad. Everything was super delicious! The coconut tempura shrimp was exactly how I remembered it - big juicy and flavorful shrimp with very sweet coconut fried onto the outside. So soft and tasty on the inside - this dish is really ideal for me to share with someone else because it's so sweet. I treat it like a savory dessert more than an entree. My veggie tempura roll was great, with no onions this time and with a delightful sauce drizzled all over it. My husband's side salad with sesame dressing instead of the standard dressing was so tasty I wanted to steal it from him. The miso soup was nice, with a fine flavor and good consistency. Staff was friendly and polite, service was well-paced. One of the ladies who checked on us even remembered me from last time and mentioned the cucumber salad I didn't get and how busy they were that night. Very nice folks. Let me get straight to the point. I have been here twice now and both times the food has been good. Both times I've had to wait an extra hour because the service is piss poor. The first time It was a takeout order and we had asked if our food was ready and it had been sitting there for 30 minutes so my hot sushi rolls were cold and the two other rolls had fallen over. The second time they didn't even notice us waiting for a table until 20 minutes in and then an additional 45 minute wait, after waiting we sat at the table for 15 minutes before even getting asked our drinks. In the end the service is terrible, you are better off driving down to Ventura to get dinner. read more

My first visit here in many years and I was super disappointed...I got seated at the Sushi Bar next to a big mess that didn't get cleaned up for at least 15 minutes. They even seated someone else on the other side of the mess! At least that guy got acknowledged by the sushi chef and given a bowl of edamame while he waited. The Chef didn't acknowledge my presence the whole time I was there, perhaps because his view of my seat at the Sushi Bar was obstructed by a large and very odd "sculpture" made up of dried fish! I sat a good ten minutes without service. I placed my order, an oyster shooter and the Chef special. Waited a long time but no shooter, just water, the mess, and me. Eating out alone can be a daunting experience but caring wait staff and congenial hosts can make a big difference in how you feel as a solitary diner...I didn't feel good there. Went recently for dinner the first night in town and loved it so much, went back again for lunch 1.5 days later. Very generous portions, VERY fresh and delicious fish. The salmon is out of this world! The ONLY sort-of "negative" was the fatty tuna. Both my companion and I thought it was fair at best (we didn't even finish it), and for $15 per 2 pieces of nigiri sushi, it should at least be on the "very good" side. I really hate doing this because I like Hakane. But people should know. I have been avoiding ordering from Hakane lately because service has been struggling. I get that I know times are tough right now for restaurants. But I did an online order yesterday. They said it would be ready in 45 minutes. I knew there would be a wait, so that's why I ordered early. I got to the restaurant 55 minutes after ordering only to find they had not pulled my order off their order tape yet which meant they had not even started the order yet! We just had what was probably the worst Japanese dinner ever-cold Gyoza, overly sweet teriyaki, and a complete tempura failure. I had ordered vegetable only tempura but it was served piled together with shrimp. I explained that I was allergic to shrimp and that even though I realized they had been cooked together, the fact that they were stacked touching, especially with uncovered tails, made it so I couldn't eat it. So what did they do? Took it back to the kitchen for about ten minutes and then re-served the same plate! At that point, it had obviously been restacked without the shrimp and was now ice cold! The only reason I'm giving it any stars at all is the fact that our daughter enjoyed her sushi special and the fact that the waiter tried to make up for the failings of the kitchen. I have a personal policy to write only good reviews on Yelp, but felt this was important. Most restaurants these days go out of their way to honor serious allergies and I was very upset to see how Hakane handled their mistake at the expense of my health. read more

So to start my boyfriend and I are vegan and GF, this is not a vegan restaurant by any means but for a quick date this place was sooo accommodating and our server was so sweet and helpful! To start we ordered the Cucumber Salad, 2 Avocado rolls and 2 of the Veggie rolls, the salad was really nice and the rolls are very big slices and kept us full till our main food came. We ordered the Santa Fe Salad, a little plain but not a bad option of you're looking for something different and then the Tofu Teriyaki bowl with added Veggies from the veggie plate. Huge portions came out and the teriyaki plate was loaded with cauliflower, mushrooms, bell peppers, zucchini, squash, eggplant, white rice and sauce. We spent about and hour or so here and everything came out swiftly! The server was wonderful and kept going in and out to check out if anything we thought of ordering had allergens or non-vegan ingredients.
