My hubby and I were looking for veggie-friendly options today in New York Chinatown since it's Lent and I can't eat meat on Fridays. We ended up stumbling upon Hakata TonTon and decided to give it a try! They probably are more known for their pork given their namesake (their menu and logo is a cute lil pig) but we really enjoyed the vegetarian options we ordered. We got the agedashi tofu which has an interesting coating--almost like cornstarch-like, topped with roasted broccoli and seaweed with a slightly cool but flavorful broth. We also got the kakiage tempura udon which came out fresh (the tempura was still sizzlingly warm!) and had fried onion toppings and an interesting refreshing minty flavor. The service was also quite quick and they were very attentive and friendly. If coming back to Manhattan after Lent, I would love to try their pork options! Those looked incredible as well. The menus were quite cute and the ambiance nice (small, but clean and well maintained) with matching plates and beautiful presentation of food. I wish I got a photo of the chopsticks. Food: This restaurant is a Hong Kong style cafe during the day from opening until 5pm and then a Japanese restaurant from 5pm until close. We tried this place for dinner and ordered two ramens and an appetizer. We tried the chicken karaage, tonkatsu ramen, and the tan tan ramen. My friend highly recommended this place, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The interior is spacious, and arriving around 5:15 PM, we were the first customers of the evening. They offer a large menu with plenty of choices. My friend noticed the quality had dropped since her first visit, making us wonder if there is a new chef. When we mentioned to the waiter how salty almost every dish was, he just said, "That's how it usually is." Well, if that's the standard, it's just consistently not good. The food: Beef Garlic Fried Rice (8/10): The standout dish of the night. It had the best flavor of everything we tried. Avocado Crunch (6/10): Better than expected, largely thanks to the tasty sauce. Just the outside is little crunchy. Avocado is very soft. Tonton Hot Pot (5/10): We ordered the small for two. It looked massive with the raw veggies, but shrunk down significantly once cooked. I didn't really get the traditional hot pot feel with this. If you're craving for traditional hotpot, go somewhere else for it. Tebasaki Wings (3/10): Disappointing and aggressively salty. I have been coming to hakata ton ton for years, and locations have changed many times. When the Korean hospitality group ran this place in ktown, I hated it, it was so bad and portion was pathetic Now they are in Chinatown, I think it's a little better. Some of my old time fav are gone, I like the beef tongue and the almond tofu still( there are very small amount of protein in the ton ton pot, lots of unnecessary tofu. Made last minute reservations and came with 2 other people on a friday evening 945pm. They just switched to their fall/winter menu which the current menu online doesnt reflect. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and a hotpot for 2 with rice shime. Citrus salmon: it was good. Probably my favorite thing out of evwrything we tried. Salmon was fresh, had some fish eggs, some crunchy pellet things, scallions. Everything together in 1 bite was flavorful. Tebasaki- it was ok! Nothing special i can really comment on or remember. Grilled hamachi- it was ok Grilled motsu- it was ok. Probably my 2nd/3rd favorite appetizer ive tried. The intestines itself are a bit bland, but tastes good with the spicy cod roe. Goma hamachi- it was a bit too much dressing. The server mixed the whole thing for us. The dressing completely overpowered the fish. The seaweed was soggy. I think it wouldve tasted better if the seaweed couldve acted more like a mini wrap and less dressing. Kara tonton hot pot- Ive personally never really liked spicy hotpot, but my companion wanted it so we ordered it. The soup was a bit thin/watery compared to another japanese hotpot place that i love which has thicker collagen rich soup. It was spicy but not devastatingly so. Would i order this again? Probably not. I would rather try their original soup. Overall, i enjoyed the variety of the menu. My husband and I went to Hakata TonTon for dinner and overall had a good experience with some great dishes. We were seated really quickly, which was nice, and our drinks, kani harumaki, and shake ramen came out in a reasonable amount of time. However, our karaage and tonton ramen took much longer to arrive. From the summer menu, we tried the tonton ramen, which I found to be quite salty for my taste, though I think it would've gone really well with a bowl of rice. I also had the bottle ramen. I really liked the concept. It's served in a bottle, and the staff shakes it up and pours it into a bowl. The idea was fun and unique, with ramen, broth, and veggies inside, but again, it was a bit too salty for me. From the regular menu, the karaage was very good--crispy and flavorful. The kani harumaki was my favorite of the night. It was deep-fried spring roll wrappers shaped like tacos, filled with snow crab, pork, and mushrooms. So good! I mistakenly poured the sauce all over them, which made it a little too salty, so next time I'll definitely just dip them instead. Even with the timing delays and some dishes being saltier than I prefer, I'd come back, especially to try their hot pot next time. We stumbled upon this fantastic Japanese-owned restaurant in the heart of Chinatown and were thrilled to discover it. We decided to dine there for a late dinner on Monday at 8 PM, and the restaurant was packed with people, every table occupied. We started with some delicious appetizers, drinks, and hot pot. I went to this unique Japanese restaurant a little while ago. They used to be in the West Village before moving to Koreatown (on 35th street) before they closed as well and a while ago, they opened here in Chinatown. As per the name and their logo, they specialize in pork dishes with a bunch of dishes featuring their signature tonsoku or pig feet. While not as glamorous or as large as their old space, they converted the old Cha Kee/Mission Chinese pop-up location nicely and the service was friendly. I have in general had better versions of several of the dishes, but overall we had a very good meal. The first thing that arrived was probably my favorite bite of the night which was the Goma Hamachi for $20 with baby yellowtail with scallion, seaweed, and sesame sauce which is poured table side. The hamachi was excellent quality being buttery with a soft texture and the nutty sesame sauce (said goma) worked nicely with it. This was excellent and I would recommend it heavily. Also very tasty was the Kani Harumaki for $14 with a blend of snow crab, pork, mushroom, and vegetables served with spring roll skin which came with a light soy based dipping sauce. There was a bit of sweetness, a bit of earthiness, and some richness and it all fit well with the crispy skin. This was very good as well and was decently portioned for the price point. Also very tasty was the Wagyu Yakiniku Wrap for $18 with BBQ washu beef with lettuce, pickled vegetables, and mayo wrapped in a scallion pancake. This was perhaps a bit messy due to the mayo as well as the sweet sauce especially when paired with the slightly oily pancake but the flavor was excellent. The beef quality was high and it had some sweetness to it but not too much so and the pickled vegetables added a nice crunch. The Tonsoku Ponzu for $13 with grilled pork feet with scallion and ponzu sauce is one of their signatures that you can't really find in many other Japanese spots. The dish of course has a lot of collagen so it's rich and fatty but the ponzu helps cut down the richness of the pork. There was also a Japanese hot sauce on the table which helped as well. This was also good though I would recommend more compared to other small plates to share. The Kara Age for $9 consisting of Japanese fried chicken with mala mayo was pretty standard outside of the price point being relatively cheaper for the portion size compared to most other places. The chicken was pretty tender though I have had much crispier versions before but I can't complain with the light batter and the amount of chicken given. Though the color was different, the mayo also didn't exactly have any type of mala seasoning either but it still worked with the chicken. The Koji Ebi Chili for $20 consisting of shrimp with sweet chili over egg omelette was pretty standard western Japanese/Yoshoku style comfort food. There was plenty of shrimp/ebi in there and the sweet chili was standard. I wish the egg was a bit fluffier but that is only a minor fault in an otherwise standard tasty dish. Last was our large main to share which was the Tonton Hotpot which is $68 for the large or $38 for the small and we got the large one which was large and fine. This came with pork feet, chicken thigh, pork belly, dumplings, tofu, vegetables, and your choice of soup where we got the spicy miso tonsoku soup. The primary meat in there was the tonsoku/pork feet with there being some thigh and a little bit of dumplings and pork belly. Outside of the size which is easily big enough for four people as it should be for the price point, it's hard not to compare it unfavorably to some other nabe spots such as Kimura or even some other recent ones such the izakaya Toriya on the LES which both had much better broths, a little more variety in terms of vegetables, and was not focused on one meat in particular. Possibly the motsu/intestine pot is better here but I would recommend sticking with their other dishes instead. The meal overall was very tasty. I wouldn't recommend the nabe/hot pot but the rest of the dishes overall were good quality with a couple definite highlights. read more

Oh Chinatown, so difficult to navigate unless you do a little research. Sometimes you happen upon an amazing find, other times a restaurant more bland than your local Chinese takeout. I guess you really have to know what you're looking for. I'm not the right person to guide you through this neighborhood. So I suggest you do the research. And by the way, the crowds don't always indicate quality. Too often some overhyped TikTok fav rules because some people think authenticity in this part of town is a dingy basement dwelling where rude waiters hustle you in and out of their restaurant. The line to that particular restaurant was halfway down the street this evening. And as I was walking toward it, I passed a Hakata TonTon and a gentleman was outside, reminiscent of Little Italy a block away, enticing me to come in. I checked out the menu which was enticing in itself, but noticed that I didn't really recognize any of the dishes beyond dumplings. That's how uninformed I am. But it all looked good. I smiled at the gentleman and said if the restaurant I was heading for was busy I would return. It was and I'm glad I did. Hakata region style of cooking in Japan is known for its use of pork broth with Ramen. That's about all I know. My wife who is Dominican was thrilled that they were using pig's feet as one of the dishes. I was intrigued by the fried chicken. So we decided to bring our niece and her kids in and bypass the Chinese restaurants on the strip. While low-key, the ambience is very welcoming, and the staff are exceedingly attentive. We had an unruly two year-old with us and they were so gentle and sweet with her and I really appreciated that. Note the picture of the little tray for her food that they brought out. We shared dishes as it was almost tapas-like service and all I can say is, I didn't even know what I was eating half the time, but was thrilled by every dish. My pictures don't do justice to the food because my family members attacked each plate before I got a decent picture lol. This restaurant is a new favorite. And I will return to try even more dishes. I highly encourage you to come by and find what you like because it is truly a dining experience. just wonderful. And to be honest, the pricing is really fair. We were so full by how many plates we ordered we never got to the desserts. Next time. As people indicated in other reviews, this is not the right choice for everybody, considering they use parts of the pig that people are not accustomed to. But the goal of dining is to try new things isn't it (at least that's what I told my nine-year-old grand nephew as he sat there with us looking at all of these new choices with confusion lol). My boss picked this restaurant. He thought it would be a traditional sushi restaurant. It was not. In fact, there was no sushi or sashimi on the menu. With the exception of the siu mai, everything I had was brand new and nothing that I have seen on the menu of any other Japanese menu. We tried the Kani Harabuki (Blend of snow crab, pork, mushroom and vegetables. Served with spring roll skin) which I likened to a Japanese taco because of its presentation. It was extremely tasty. For the main dish, we had the Ebi Chili (Shrimp drenched in sweet chili sauce over an egg omelette). Everything tasted good.
