3.5 stars We saw good reviews about this Japanese restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. Korean people run this Japanese restaurant. Parking in this neighbourhood is alright. You can park in the parking lot of Coquitlam Centre and walk to the restaurant. The restaurant belongs to a complex that has commercial parking space, BUT it is very easy to miss it. If you can find the entrance of the commercial parking lot and do not miss it, you should be able to find free parking there. This Japanese restaurant is located inside the complex. Not right on The High Street. The chef is an older Korean gentleman and two servers are older female. They were very polite to us. They took our order correctly. However, the chef was super busy taking care of the customers who ate in the restaurant and ones who ordered take out. The dishes came out very slowly. We ordered two pieces of the salmon aburi sushi at $3.95. The rice was kind of mushy. The salmon should be seated a little bit but the quality was not there yet. The texture of the salmon meat was soft but not really seared. It definitely lost some marks here. I ordered one piece of ikura nigiri sushi. The ikura was sitting and touching the aburi salmon sushi. The sauce of the aburi salmon sushi laid on the seaweed of the ikura nigiri sushi. The sauce soaked the seaweed, plus that the oil of the ikura went all the way down to the rice and plate. It should not be like that. Again the rice of the ikura nigiri sushi was mushy. The rice should be firm and sticky or chewy. The chopped scallop roll and house roll were great. The chopped scroll roll had a bite size. The house roll was bigger that came with some sauce on top. It was interesting though. Usually each dish of sushi comes with some ginger and wasabi. This dish had none but only the sushi itself. Usually there was some decorations on the plate with the wasabi and ginger. The seared tuna sashimi was great outside. It was crispy with some salty flavour, but the tuna sashimi itself was still frozen, so the texture of the fish was very cold and not ready for eating! This restaurant has some good dishes and bad ones. They can still be improved on a lot of things. Probably the size of the restaurant is small. It does not have enough storage. It has a lot of things that are exposed to the public/the seating area or for customers to see. Not organized enough. Pricing was average comparing to others. Not super expensive. It is a little bit cheaper than the ones in Burnaby and Vancouver. If you don't have high expectations or if you only look for so-so Japanese food, this restaurant works fine for you.

That's how it looked and then you mix it all!

My first time at Hakone! We got this rice giant bowl which came with a side of veggies and sashimi with spicy sauce. Really good and great to share! And we got their hot combo rolls. Altogether came to around 30$ for 2, which is good and you take home some. Great sushi restaurant and definitely going back to try other items on the menu. It is inside Kensington mall on the bottom floor.

Pleasant sushi experience. Every piece was a delight in my mouth. Perfect balance of all the ingredients. It's not fancy or trendy, but if you want to please your palate and your tummy, try this hidden place for great gastronomic experience. $48 for. 54-piece party tray. Not bad. Next time, I will try their big bowl of noodle.

Really really big rise ball!! Good for who want to eat healthy food. Free parking in the mall!!

I love this place! It's hidden inside Kensington plaza, just a short walk from the H&M parking lot at Coquitlam centre (free parking). I always order their ebi sunomono and the amount they give you is tremendous amount - more than any other place at $3.95. I also got their tamago roll at $2.50 which is also made differently than other maki tamago sushi rolls I've had. Mom and pop are super nice. The only thing is that you get the food smell on your clothes and hair when you leave the restaurant, probably because the place doesn't have much ventilation and it's really small (maybe 9 tables). But come here! Their food also tastes really clean - not overly salted/msg.

The donburi looked good with sufficient portion for a strong man. It was tasty, however as I kept eating the soy chicken karaage got more and more salty. Finally I couldn't have anymore. I finished the rice and it was well cooked. I drank two cups of tea after having the donburi. I didn't try other dishes, perhaps I will give them a try when I come here next time. I do hope the chef could make it less salty. Apart from that, service was fine and the ambient was quiet and tidy.

sometimes the best dinners are the ones you don't plan…read more our party of five ended up at mika sushi on a saturday for an impromptu dinner and a chance to catch up. the restaurant was lively without feeling chaotic, with a bright, modern dining room, high ceilings, warm wood finishes, comfortable booths, and an open sushi bar where you can catch glimpses of the chefs at work. it felt casual, welcoming, and easy to settle into for a relaxed evening. the hardest part wasn't finding a table...it was deciding what to order. the menu is extensive, with pictures of a variety of sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls, bentos, noodles, donburi, and plenty of vegan friendly options. i spent far longer than i'd like to admit staring at the menu before finally ordering the "my favourite combo." for $24.95, you get to choose four items, which turned out to be a great value. i went with the tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, dynamite roll, and a negitoro cone. my order initially came out with negitoro maki instead of the cone, but it was quickly corrected with an apology, which i appreciated. everything arrived looking fresh and nicely presented. the tuna and salmon sashimi were thickly sliced, buttery, and fresh, exactly what i was hoping for. the negitoro cone was generously filled with chopped tuna and green onions, and the nori still had a nice crisp snap to it. the dynamite roll was probably my least favourite of the four. i was surprised to find a slightly soggy piece of yam tempura tucked in with the prawn tempura, crab, and avocado. i'm not sure if that's normally part of the roll or if it was added by mistake, but it wasn't something i was expecting from a dynamite roll. i also would have liked the prawn tempura to be crispier. it was missing that satisfying crunch you'd normally expect from a dynamite roll. it wasn't a deal breaker, and i didn't mention it to our server, but it just wasn't the standout dish for me. one thing i appreciated was that the portions were generous without being over the top. i left feeling comfortably full and never once questioned whether the combo was worth the price. with such a large menu, there's something for just about everyone, including plenty of vegan friendly options, making it an easy place to bring a group with different tastes. unlike some japanese restaurants where everyone shares dishes, mika sushi feels more like a place where each person orders exactly what they're craving. between the fresh sashimi, generous portions, reasonable prices, and relaxed atmosphere, mika sushi delivered exactly what we were looking for that evening. was every bite perfect? not quite. but the food was fresh, the value was excellent, and spending a few hours catching up with family made it a night well spent. sometimes the best dinners really are the ones you don't plan.
