With the popularity of multiple food carts in the vicinity of Khana Khazana, it's very easy to overlook this cart with a much shorter line during weekday lunch times. A majority of the lunch crowd either visit Indian King Biryani House and Biryani House and I don't blame them because they both make excellent biryani dishes and have extensive menus. However, not to be outdone, what Khana Khazana lacks in variety, it more than makes up for in what it produces --- and that's one helluva a mean combo over rice. After overlooking and ignoring this cart for years, I decided to give it a shot based on the solid reviews it had on Yelp. One try. And was I rewarded for that chance I gave it. First, yes, their menu isn't all that huge or impressive. They serve chicken/lamb over rice/salad, chicken/lamb biryani and veggie/chicken/lamb kati rolls. The rest of the menu, consisting of things like burgers and hot dogs, can pretty much be ignored. All of the good dishes are basically $6. I dropped in at around 1:15 on a weekday and there were just a handful of people on the line, while the lines for the Biryani House carts were 20-25 people deep. There were 3 guys working in the cart and the cashier in the group couldn't be any more friendly. Within a minute my order of a combo over rice with white, barbecue and green sauce was ready and I was on my way. The first thing I observed with the rice dish was how large the order was. Not only did the tin foil container look bigger, but the box was PACKED. There was a lot of rice and a lot of chicken and lamb and very little lettuce, which was perfect for me. Flavor-wise, it was delicious. The chicken was fresh, the lamb was fresh and all of the sauces were mixed in perfectly. Best of all, I had plenty of it to eat. To recap, for anyone who works or is passing by the FiDi, a quick word of advice. Yes, the biryani dishes at both Biryani House carts are excellent, but if you're just looking for chicken or lamb over rice, go with Khana Khazana. Not only will you get the best bang for your buck from Khana, but the flavors are awesome and you'll thoroughly enjoy the classic New York halal combo over rice and be stuffed afterwards.

This was our 3rd halal cart that we visited and I'll say that it's the best out of all of three for me. Taste wise - amazing with the perfect blend of spices on their meat; their rice was moist and tasted a lot like pilaf. They slathered the whole thing with white sauce which can't be healthy but it's oh so damn delicious. Price wise - fabulous at only 6 bucks for their chicken and lamb over rice. They were always easy to spot because of their bright yellow paint. A lot of their customers probably come here for their simple breakfast items (pastries, bagels, rolls, eggs), but no disrespect to their breakfast, customers should really be lining up for their gargantuan lunch platters. I've never had their breakfast, but the items listed are pretty standard breakfast fare. As for lunch though, there's a number of Mediterranean-style sandwiches and platters customers can order. Most of their lunch entrees are served with either chicken or lamb kebab style meat along with rice, hummus/French fries, salad and a green salad. And did I mention they also include a thick pita bread too? And a free water/soda? All for $9! This is the year 2019 and they still serve a hippo-size serving of food to customers for $9 with a free soda. Gotta love it. On my 1st visit, I ordered a Kafka Shish Kebab platter and was AMAZED at the amount of food in the platter. There was a full salad in the top left, a full serving of hummus in the top right and a massive serving of rice with 2 large kafka shish kebabs and 2 falafels sitting on top. When I opened the box to reveal the platter, the heavenly angels sang to me. It was like a work of art with all of the colors - the green lettuce, red slices of tomato, the tan hummus, the dark kafka shish kebabs and falafels sitting perfectly on top of the glowing red rice. Better yet, everything was delicious. The rice was my favorite because it had a lot of flavor in it. The kafka shish kebab might not have been my favorite and may have been a little dry, but nothing was going to ruin my good feelings of seeing this delicious mess. In a subsequent visit I also ordered the chicken kebab, which pretty much was the same as the kakfa shish kebab, but with grilled chicken and, honestly, it was one of the best street cart meals I ever had. The chicken was tender, flavorful and cooked just right. If there's a platter to order from this street cart/truck, get the chicken kebab. It's better than any halal chicken and rice dish you will ever have. I'll tell you what, if I'm ever starving and in need of a big pile of food, I know Ambizza will do the trick.

It is late afternoon, dusk, no lines as the rest of Manhattan's office-dwellers have either eaten their fill or are already headed for the subway. I head for my favorite spot, a little green Halal Biryani cart perched on the embankment of William Street, between Liberty and Cedar. One of many, you might be tempted to say, but no -- no. Not all halal meat carts are created equal. I nod in affirmation and he scoops up two ample hunks of grilled chicken breast, splashes some reddish chili oil on top. By this time the outside of the meat is already cooked and seasoned: a delicate collage of autumn brown, tandoori orange, with occasional spotting of coal-black char. I have not eaten all day and the smell of the meat is amazing to behold. "Onions?"  "Yes, please -- and make it spicy." He adds a handful of fresh sliced onions to the meat, minces both in a series of quick blurred strokes, the cube-shaped pieces sizzling on the grill. Grabbing a carton he deftly spoons a heaping portion of basmati rice and chopped greens, accompanied by tomatoes and a few slices of fresh cucumber.  He shovels the meat onto the rice, taking extra care to get ALL the scraps. Nothing to be wasted.  "Sauce?" "Lot of white, including the salad. Also the red, and really douse it with the green." The trick is the sauce, of which there are several. White (cucumber, yogurt and/or mayonnaise based -- depending on the recipe. here is one: http://gothamist.com/2013/03/16/behold_heres_the_recipe_for_white_h.php); standard BBQ and a spicy green concoction of cilantro, garlic and chiles. It's the latter that makes me a regular customer -- many halal venders will put a spin on the recipe to make it their own. I've encountered one that will add fresh chopped chiles upon request; another an extra helping of chickpeas and sauteed onions; another with pickled Indian peppers. But not every halal cart has "the green sauce." Perhaps routine, or perhaps because he has the time, he sprinkles some additional spices (cumin?) and sautéed dried onions on top with a flourish. A crowning touch to a culinary masterpiece. I am moved to pause in aesthetic appreciation and take in the sight and smells before diving in: the vibrant blend of white, red and green splattered atop a canvas grilled meat and onion. Splotches of color reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock. To charge only $5 for this seems like a steal. This lonely food cart surrounded by towering offices and walk-in restaurants, purveyors of "fine" cuisine, meager portions at double or triple the cost.  Handing over five singles, I enthusiastically proclaim "you're food is THE BEST". He smiles and nods modestly. Perhaps too modest to realize what wonders he is producing for his customers. Bless you, little halal biryani cart. They have no idea what they are missing.
