We decided to come in on Labor Day since our normal go to spot, bent spoon, was closed for the holiday. I'm actually very glad we got to try Halo Pub. I had it many years ago and this really reminded me how this old school looking ice cream shop has so much character. We got strawberry amaretto, which was very unique as one scoop and our bottom scoop was cookies and cream. Very solid. I'm also very glad that there is a location in Hamilton as well. Visited the Halo Pub for the first time the evening of Memorial Day. I came here on the recommendation of someone, and also because we were nearby for dinner in Palmer Square. This shop has a lot of character and charm - the details and exterior are from a by-gone time, but in the best way. The shop's decor is a lot of rich wood details that are rich in history. It is located in Palmer Square, and there is a private parking garage right next door, in addition to limited street parking. As stated, we visited here on a Monday night, but there were quite a few people out due to it being Princeton's graduation weekend. There was a little bit of a line that stretched onto the sidewalk, but it was nothing crazy or out of the ordinary for an ice cream shop. Once inside, the time was nearing 9:45 PM. The store closed at 11 PM that night. An employee took time to come out from behind the counter and walk through the line to inform everyone that they would not be making milkshakes past 10 PM. If you were in line at this time, you were fine to still order one, but I suppose if you came at 10 or after, you would not have been able to order one. Personally, and as someone who has worked in ice cream, I think this is a bad look for the business when you do things like this. I am assuming this was done in order to save time at the end of the night, but realistically, how much time does this save? I think it would actually take more time considering you take an employee away from the counter to make the announcement, and have to deal with disgruntled customers for the entire last hour of the shift. This is a main reason for my missing stars in this review. If you are open until 11 PM, you should have all of your offerings until then. If not, close at 10 PM. When it was our time to order, I was able to sample a few flavors before making my choices. They had some unique flavors that I had never seen before. I personally got a two scoop dish with the Amaretto Chocolate Almond and the M&M flavors. Both were interesting, and flavor combinations I had never had from an ice cream parlor before. The staff was friendly, especially the girl who waited on us. I thought the pricing was fair, and not too crazy for what you receive. The ice cream itself was tasty, and I enjoyed the flavors I got. However, for this being a hard ice cream store, the flavors were both softer than I would have liked. I asked my recommender if this is how the ice cream always is here, and they said it is usually on the softer side. That is a bummer, considering it is hard ice cream. Overall, this experience for me was fine. The product is good, and the location is nice. However, for the reasons outlined above, I am not sure if I would recommend this place. If you are in the area, for sure make a stop. But, since they pick and choose what menu items they want to serve, you might get there and they are choosing not to make the item you were looking to get. read more

Blatant Negligence - A Health Hazard, Not an Ice Cream Shop I've never been more disappointed in a local establishment. Halo Pub could've been a real community gem, but instead, it became a textbook case of how to completely ignore public health responsibilities. The shop was recently shut down by the city health department, and frankly, it was long overdue. From visibly dirty conditions to a roach infestation and staff who clearly lacked basic food safety training, it was obvious management had no interest in maintaining even minimum standards. What's worse is the constant excuses from ownership--refusing to take accountability and ignoring warning signs that any responsible business would have addressed immediately. Serving food to the public is a privilege, not a right. This wasn't just poor management--it was willful neglect that put customers' health at risk. It's sad to see a place with potential be destroyed by such blatant disregard for safety, cleanliness, and community trust. Definitely a great place to pop in to warm up on a cold night or cool off on a hot summer day! I came in and got a double scoop of chocolate and cherries and chocolate health bar and another with vanilla heath bar and vanilla praline pecan. Both were delicious. There was surprisingly a line out the door on a chilly spring Sunday afternoon. They had a pretty good selection of flavors but I did notice that some of them had run out by the time we came. I got a scoop of coffee ice cream and my boyfriend got a scoop of chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. The scoops were decent sizes, but for the price I think that they were smaller than I would have liked. However, the ice cream met my expectations and was nicely creamy. I got a single scoop in a sugar cone: Tahiti vanilla bean and chocolate peanut paradise. Halo Pub is one of my favorite ice cream spots. The quality of their cream is amazing, which makes for even better ice cream. Their classic flavors are great (my go tos are raspberry cream sorbet and Tahiti vanilla bean). This visit was solid as well: the vanilla was delicious as usual, and the chocolate peanut paradise was dotted with tasty chunks of topping anchored by a rich chocolate ice cream. Pretty Average Ice Cream Store Honestly pretty hard to review because we couldn't get the flavors that we were hoping to get. We wanted the coffee soft serve as well as the grapefruit sorbet. Both were sold out when we went on Memorial Day. We ended up getting the mango sorbet and the Tahiti vanilla bean ice cream. They were both pretty decent. * The mango sorbet was really ripe and it tasted pretty fresh, however the Tahiti vanilla ice cream was nothing special. * We had to wait in a line to get in. We probably waited for around 15 minutes. * The vibe on the inside of the store was pretty old timey but they were doing a pretty good job following COVID guidelines. All in all, I would say that this place is a pretty average ice cream store. The ice cream here is more creamy based as opposed to Bent Spoon's gelato-style. I usually always go for Mint Chocolate Chip, and am never disappointed. We walked in late and were met with friendly service- they were happy to provide suggestions and explain what some of the less common items were like the shakes and hot chocolate floats. This location is very convienent after spending a day in Princeton and definitely so after sampling some of the fine dining options in the area. Halo Pub also makes both the milk and the ice cream and I think that really makes a difference. When I was there on Friday, I wasn't greeted at all which surprised me. They used to provide a laminated list with all the flavors which made ordering easier but it's gone. I asked for a two scoop hot fudge sundae but the server didn't hear the sundae part apparently and handed me two scoops. When I pointed out that I had requested a sundae she seemed nervous like she didn't know what to do. I ended up getting the two scoops with hot fudge on them but not the other sundae accoutrements (whipped cream, cherry etc.). Seating can be hard to find on a Friday night. Many of the seats are stools which may not be accessible for everyone. It also seems like it would be difficult to navigate here with a wheelchair since there's not a lot of space to move around. read more

I love ice creams from Halo Pub for three reasons, the flavors, the quality and simple ingredients they contain and the price. Like most other ice cream shops they all sell one pint tubs, however they are much cheaper than their competitors. My personal favorites are chocolate with roasted almonds, chocolate with cherries and cashew caramel. Long lines outside the store in summer is a common sighting if you are strolling around in the Princeton downtown which speaks about their product. Halo beats Bent Spoon as far as my comparison goes... but they're not as good as Gil & Bert's in nearby Cranbury. $2 for a small scoop is a good value, and that was appreciated on my ice cream bender afternoon. I really love that they take pains to make the most natural product possible. That said, for me, the sweetener part needs to be tweaked. With so many natural sweetening options, it would make sense to experiment with what blends well flavor wise, and allows your ice cream to taste like good ole ice cream as opposed to honey + X flavor. I was doing a side-by-side comparison of chocolate peanut butter with nearby Bent Spoon, and Gil & Bert's in Cranbury. While Bent Spoon didn't even have the dang flavor, Gil & Bert did, and theirs allowed the headliners to shine, whereas my Halo version had a honey aftertang, that just didn't go down well. The mission is great, and obviously reviews show this works for many, but sweetener needs to be altered, IMHO, for the real flavors to do their thing. read more

There was a short line when our group got there but it moved fast. Upon entering there were two huge cases of ice cream and a separate area for barista drinks. The signs had a cute play on words for a bar for instance a small serving of ice cream was referred to as a "small draft." They have a separate ice cream parlor. Due to the Pandemic, only masked customers are allowed to enter three at a time. Inside it was cool and air conditioned. People were very patient and waited outside during a steamy summer weekend. Seriously, the best ice cream I've had in a long time. I chose the mocha chocolate chip. DAAAAAANG.
