It's why they are famous. Amaretto ice cream with Heath bars. Amazing. Blending Heath bars is so underrated. Chocolate cookies & cream with Reese's peanut butter cups was fantastic. Going Oreo is like getting a second blend in for free - don't tell anyone. There are two other very good ice cream spots in Princeton and a third new one that looks interesting but if you are getting just one don't miss out on Thomas Sweet. We did a quick stop in Princeton and was looking for an ice cream place while there. (They also make milk shakes!) It was Labor Day so the other popular place was closed, but we found this place, which was open. It's a little shop that spoke of its history just down the street from downtown Princeton and Princeton University. There is street parking, but we had parked in a parking garage near the downtown shopping area and walked over. It only took just about 7 minutes. Maybe less if you're not traveling with kids. There are two doors but one is exit only. Go through the one on your left. They have a steady stream of customers and I spotted these huge waffle cones with gigantic scoops of luscious ice cream. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into since it was an unplanned visit. Though there was a line, it went by quickly and by the time we got up there, there were more people behind us. We were definitely the odd ones out because it seemed like everyone else knew what they wanted and I was still trying to digest the menu and what they offered. I could feel the impatience as I asked my questions. The good news is they're pretty knowledgeable about ingredients! One of my kids has food allergies and though he was okay with getting soft serve, which was clearly not a popular option, they were nice enough to call out a manager to answer questions. Tip: their chocolate ice cream is egg and nut free. We ended up getting the soft serve anyway. In fact, both of my kids got vanilla soft serve but one in a cup for the kid with food allergies, and the other in a wafer cone. I shared a double scoop with my husband in a cup. (I sort of regretted that and wish I went for that huge waffle cone, but I guess that means there must be a next time!) I chose their Coffee Oreo (think cookies and cream but it's now cookies and coffee) and cinnamon flavors. They are healthy scoops and I liked them. The coffee flavor was nice and strong that it almost overshadowed the Oreo bits. It was nice! I mostly got that flavor for my husband who loves his coffee. The cinnamon was wonderful. You could taste it and I rather enjoyed that. We also finished the soft serve! It isn't the creamiest I've had, but it's one of the more "milkier" vanilla soft serves! My kids enjoyed it and it was a decent size. None of the ice cream we got were too sweet, so that was really nice. This place is definitely a solid one to go to for one's ice cream fix! They have a few small tables on the other side by the "exit" for door as well as a water fountain. They also provide cups, which I thought was a nice touch. Because I felt a bit rushed on this occasion, I definitely hope I'll be able to go back and make a more informed order my next time there! My wife and I have been frequenting (and I mean frequenting!) TS's since we were in high school back in the 80's, through college and for several years after, until we moved to Lexington, MA. Though we live several states away, we still go to TS's every time we're in Princeton. The ice cream is good, but not great -- we get our best ice cream in Narragansett, RI. BUT the blend-ins are the best anywhere. TS's has machines that evenly blend in items like heath bars or M&M's into your ice cream which results in unique flavors tailored to your liking. It's a treat like no other, and the only reason to go to TS's. It's literally a waste of your time to go to TS's and get anything other than a blend in. We kind of feel sorry for people that don't get blend-ins. The current owner, however, could do a better job keeping the place cleaner and neater, and making some capital investments to spruce up the shop and repair the middle blend in machine. There's a run-down feeling about the shop that was never there the first few decades that we were going to the shop. Worst experience. What a rip off. We go to the location in New Brunswick and always have great service and plenty of flavors and great portions. My cousins had heard of it, but I didn't know there was an ice cream spot so close to everything. We decided to try it out and it was a decision well made. I asked for a single cup with a scoop of caramel macchiato + vanilla chocolate chip ice cream, and it was delicious!! Thomas Sweet is a pretty good option late in the evening. The Oreo batch had good chunks of cookie crumbles and a small kid serving doesn't set you back too much. I'd skip the hot fudge as it was rather stretchy and a bit clumpy, meaning it was hard to get a clean spoonful without needing to stretch the spoon from the cup pretty far. This might pose a more difficult exercise for the younger clientele. As it was, managing not to stain my dress shirt was a challenging. The flavor options were listed on the menu board above and not near or adjacent to the actual product in the freezer, so look up, not down to determine what flavors are available and choose from. Very poor experience recently. My wife and I came in while it was a bit busy and a employee in a Rutgers hoodie was extremely rude. I think it was a menopausal moment that made me enter the door of Thomas Sweet filled as it was with young, hyperactive coeds. That much sugar would make anyone bounce off the walls. I have no doubt the ice cream here is handmade in small batches because that level of saturated creaminess would be criminal otherwise. Hey, if I was a Princeton freshman serving this ol' geezer who kept asking a lot of questions about what blending exactly means, I would certainly have a lot less patience than the young girl who was serving me. After much deliberation and much competition from the squealing sorority girls breathing down my neck to order, I asked for a $4.50 medium cup of Ginger Snap, French Vanilla and Nutella all blended together and then swirled with bits of Heath bars for texture (see photo). You would think I would have a moment of transcendence with that combination of flavors. Not really. It was good alright but so thick and sweet that I was done in about five spoonfuls. I just had to stop at that point and consider all the sins I committed that day. This was but one of them. Was told this is THE famous ice cream place in princeton, so i came in with very high expectations. Had my first order which i even forget what i ordered, it was ok and SO sweet, and other than that, all the add on mix are more sweet candy and chocolate which made it worse! Be honest any grocery store brands are better!! Came back another few times only because my in laws like it/used to come here. I never ordered anything for myself, but i did try my hubby's order, again it's ok, Dairy Queen is better than them in my opinion, and after they blend the ice-cream, it's all melting becoming a bowl of sweet soupe!!
