I've been going here on and off for the last 13 years. I like to support neighborhood businesses, but it is time to be off again. Really unpleasant experience to have Irish and Albanian immigrants talking about how gross they find homeless people and how "dangerous" NYC is for over half an hour. They woman cutting my hair was looking at her co-worker and not paying attending to what she was doing while doing it. When someone is completely silent, you are likely making them uncomfortable. Whether you pay attention and care about that is up to you. Added: They did not do a good job. My hair is slightly uneven, and she cut very high layers in the black, despite my saying I didn't want layers. read more

Love this place so much and have been going for years. They're so friendly and nice! I recently had an appointment scheduled a few days prior to leaving the country for a couple of weeks. I received a call the morning of my appointment because my stylist needed to reschedule due to a personal emergency. Unfortunately they didn't have availability between the time of my original appointment and me leaving for my trip. Within a few minutes I received a call back saying the stylist would come in on a day the salon was supposed to be closed to see me! This is just great service, they truly care about their clients and are so accommodating, why would I go anywhere else? read more

When I moved to the Bronx I was so excited to go down to Manhattan to all of these high end salons with celebrity stylists. The allure was all but crushed after about 3 bad haircuts from other salons. I started asking for recommendations and a friend told me about Halo. I booked an appointment with Gillian and have never looked back. It's great that I can just walk down the street to them, but honestly, this is one of the salons/stylists that I will continue to come to no matter where I move. People started complimenting my hair ALL OF THE TIME since I started getting my hair cut here. Gillian cuts my hair so that I literally don't have to do ANYTHING to it! I wash it, air dry it, and it looks fabulous. My hair is now Victoria's Secret bombshell sexy without even trying. The staff there is always so nice. Every time I've gone another stylist or customer walks across the street to get coffee or a drink and always asks if they can get you anything. Maybe I just pick the right times to go, but it really helps to make you feel at home in this neighborhood salon. They are very knowledgable and occasionally give you little samples of things that they think you would benefit from. I love the style of the salon and always feel comfortable here. I referred a friend here who got a cut and color from Stella and loved it as well. One of the best parts is that I'm always surprised at how inexpensive my cut comes to when I check out at the front. I just moved to the area and I'm really glad I followed the reviews on several websites. Halo is most definitely a 5 star experience. Everyone is super friendly and you can't beat the price...especially for the quality of haircut. I have paid much more for a haircut on Long Island and in the city. Those cuts couldn't hold a candle to the fabulous cut I got from Gillian... I have received so many compliments! I am in the process of growing out my hair and she gave me tips on how to keep up with my hair so it looks it's healthiest. I am definitely going back! read more

Let's start by saying I just left the salon :) I went to Andrea here a few times and was always happy with my cut, however I just went to Gillian for the first time and my hair looks awesome! She was super helpful and didn't rush the consultation at all. I have super long hair and she really helped it look it's very best! I was a bit nervous at first but she explained what she was going to do in detail. Moral of the story listen to this experienced stylist... she knows what she is talking about! Let me just say, I am a Super Picky Irish Girl when it comes to my hair, and I have had the best hair colors & cuts of my life at Halo- they really know what they are doing WHATS GREAT: ~CONSULTATION- two seconds talking to the stylists or even checking out other clients hair shows these girls know what they are doing. ~AMBIANCE- Super cool design of space while still being warm and inviting- you truly feel like your getting a 5 star experience just by stepping through the door ~RESULTS- Stella advised me on the perfect color of red to suit my skin tone, and advised on a few strands of highlights to enhance the look- it LOOKS SO NATURAL- I have never gotten more compliments on my hair than since I started going here. MORE THAN HAIRSTYLING- you could literally get a make over there- they do Facials, make up, spray tanning in addition to hair Whats so-so: Its actually not in my neighborhood! I am one of those women who stylist hop. I find someone good and the second they do something minutely wrong, I move on. This hasn't been the case with Stella at Halo. I keep coming back! She's going to tell you it like it is. If that's not your style, there are plenty of equally talented stylists at the salon. Stella cleaned up my hair so meticulously the first tim-trimming each layer with such precision. When I had concern with my color and returned, we had a little bit of a disagreement on what I liked vs what she liked, but she quickly sprung to action to come up with a solution. And when I went back the next time for my regular cut/color, I asked for a little darker with a hair dye. She talked me out of it and instead recommended a high/low light with toner in between. The results were beautiful. I will keep coming back! And the prices are fantastically reasonable for the area. read more

She's extremely friendly and kind, and listened to my request while adding her own expertise. :) The salon is very well-kept, and they made me tea and gave me chocolate! I really wanted to love this place. As a recent transplant, I thought there no better way to meet new people and support my local community by getting my hair cut at a neighborhood joint, especially after reading the two glowing reviews. I dragged a friend with me to get a cut (she also got highlights) and she will never forgive me for it. We entered the salon on a Friday afternoon and were really impressed with the ambiance and decor. It's clean, stylish, and organized. The receptionist was lovely and offered us water. It seemed like we were getting off to a great start. Jillian came over to greet us and discuss what look we were going for. I wanted to chop my mid-back length hair for the "Karlie" a lá the January issue of Vogue: between chin and shoulders, soft front layers, and bangs. I showed her various print and digital pics. My friend wanted a pixie cut with ombre points (who am I to judge?)She also came armed with photos. So how is it that we both came out with the exact same Birmingham channel 13-10 PM-news anchor- cut? And not even a good one at that! Jillian gave me a chin-length bob with thick bangs. Ok sounds good so far. Except for the ridiculous layering she did on only one back section, which I didn't even realize had happened until 2 days after when I washed my hair and tried to style it myself. My hair is divided into three sections now: the two that frame my face, which came out ok and the back section that flips up and is layered with at least 5 or 6 different cuts. It takes a flat iron, blow dryer and 20 minutes just to tame it into place. One of the front layers is uneven with the other side. Unless I spend 45 minutes after every washing, my hair looks like a worn out mop. To give you some context: before this my hair is medium thick with slight volume and wave. It's not super straight but you would be hard pressed to find even a hint of a wave. I definitely used to be a wash and wear type. But sadly, no more. Now I wait for my hair to grow back to get a proper cut while slicking it back with obnoxious amounts of gel and hairpins. My friend came out with the exact same hair cut, and to be fair, she allowed herself to be talked out of what she originally wanted. But the cut still isn't a good cut. Her bangs weren't cut properly and her highlights came out J.LO circa 1999. I'll let her write her own review. I can't speak for the other stylists or the make-up artists. But it can't bode well if the top stylist isn't very good at cutting hair. read more

My daughter had her prom makeup done by Maria. She airbrushed the foundation and then went to work. In no time at all she expertly applied the makeup. The colors she worked with made my daughter's eyes totally pop. The end result was a beautiful natural finish. It wasn't overdone or too heavy. My daughter looked absolutely radiant. We asked if we could purchase the lip color she used because it was just perfect but she didn't have one available. She then gave us the one she used because there wasn't much left. We left there beyond satisfied and totally pleased with the service!! Highly recommend. read more

I should've left this review exactly around a month ago when I went here to get my hair done but better late than never. I made the appointment over the phone explaining that I had black hair and that I wanted to go red. The girl over the phone told me that most likely they will have to strip my hair to get the color. I was ok with that. When I go the next day for my appointment , the same girl I had spoken with over the phone tells me that the color i want won't come out because my hair was too dark.. She didn't mention anything about hair stripping , she just said she didn't know if it could be done .. So when I sit down with the hairstylist she tells me that in order to get that color the process would be very long and that it would require lots of money. That's exactly what she said , she mentioned around almost 300$ .. Then she proceeded to say she could do a shampoo color on me that was also a "smoothing conditioning treatment".. She said the shampoo color would show reflections of the color I wanted ... No. My roots turned out red and the rest of my hair was black. No reflection whatsoever . Not even outside in the sunlight you could see what she was talking about. Then she "cut" my hair, I asked for layers.. I don't have any idea what she cut because I had no layers. My hair looked exactly the same after I washed it. She had only styled it so that it could look as if my hair had some type of layers.. She charged me 145$ and for what? I went today to another salon by my home and I got red hair exactly how I wanted and yes it was a long procedure, 4 hours but hey my hair looks amazing and I only paid 105$. I wouldn't go back to halo salon ever nor do I reccomend this place. it was a joke and i wish I had never spent that money . read more

They don't accept credit cards, so when my hair was finished I had to go get money from the ATM and a crowd of guys were standing outside the ATM. My sister being a resident of Woodlawn turned me on to Halo. I absolutely love Halo. It has a wonderful, relaxed vibe and the staff is amazing. I walked in with waist-length hair that had never been cut (only trimmed), and left with the cutest little wash-and-wear bob. Sam really listened to what I thought I wanted (shoulder length) and advised without pressuring. I ended up going shorter than I'd initially thought, and absolutely love it. Thanks, Sam! I went here to get a spray tan done. It was not my first spray tan there and the lady that did it was nice, but I must say it was the strangest spray tan experience I've ever had. I usually forget to put lotion on my elbows and hands/feet but I remembered this time and thank God I did because she didn't put any lotion on me. All the other places I have gone to do that. They also did not have any disposable underwear or a hair net so I had to get spray tanned in my own underwear. I would have rather gone without anything at all but the lady said "we don't do that here, it's ok you can wash your underwear, tan will come off." She was right, but I would rather not have had to do that. The tan turned out fine but don't think I'll go back there anymore, even for a tan...I still haven't been back to get my hair done because of my previous experience with an extremely rude employee who works there, as detailed in my previous review. I've heard similar stories on that front so I guess I'm not alone. read more

I found this place on yelp and gave it a try: went there twice for color and cut later, no regrets! Gillian gives such knowledgeable consultation about color: I wanted to go get rid of my over bleached ends and hoped to just have a single process color. Gillian recommended to go with semipermanent color matching my roots and break it with very scarce highlights since just going dark would be too drastic. And those bleached ends would end up taking too much color and turn up darker then my roots. My hair turned out beautiful, exactly what I wanted. Not to mention conditioned and shiny. My second time was a cut. I have thin curly hair and wear it curly and straight. Gillian suggested something versatile. She gave some layers on my sides and added shorter layers in between, that took off some weight but not length which is a sore spot for curly girls. My cut is great and modern both straight and curly!! read more

I love traveling from NJ to visit Halo Salon! This salon is fabulous from the minute you enter to the moment you leave feeling beautiful. The staff are professional, friendly and warm and make sure that you are comfortable during your salon experience. I spent hours in this salon and started off with a dermalogica facial and I was so impressed. The esthetician walked me through an in-depth analysis of my skin to help me understand my breakouts. She massaged my face, arms, and feet and gave me a much needed deep cleanse with a peel and mask. This is a must have at Halo Salon as I left with softer skin and cleaner pores. I then had the Agave treatment, which is intended to cut my styling time in half. I can't wait for that to happen as I spend way too much time blow-drying in the morning! After my treatment I was ready for color, and Gillian knew how to help balance it out. She evened it out from roots to end and gave me a glossy and rich color shade for winter that I love. When getting your hair washed at the sink, get ready to put your feet up (literally) and have an amazing head massage. These girls are amazing at it! I must also add that my cut was perfect. I asked Gillian to give me a trim as I wanted to keep my length and she did just that (she really listened to what I wanted). My hair looks healthy, shiny and chic even a day later. If you are looking for a salon with high quality services, definitely check out this place. I will continue traveling into NY for my hair/skin treatments and I look forward to seeing all of the ladies (Gillian, Stella, Andrea, Sam, Suzi) each time I schedule an appointment. read more
