When the rain was pouring down on us through the storm, we ran over to Hamada General Store for some lunch. Everyone recommended to come here so it was on my bucket list. Don't let the storefront fool you. I thought this was a store. There's a lot of seating inside and their kitchen is an open-concept so you can see everyone working together to prep the food. It helps to call ahead since they become real busy during lunch hour. But if you have the time to sit, I highly recommend to enjoy the meal there. They have their regular menu and their daily specials menu. We ordered off the specials menu (mid March), the blue cheese steak and miso salmon. I'm so glad I came that day since I'm a huge fan of blue cheese and this combination was the BEST. The steak sat on a nice bed of mixed potatoes that I really enjoyed. The miso salmon was cooked perfectly, not dry at all. The shrimp tempura was crispy as well. Also did I mention, they don't charge tax. They update their daily specials and you can find them on their Instagram page. If you're around the area, check them out. I'm definitely going to return. read more

The salmon was perfectly cooked--flaky, moist, and coated in a rich miso glaze that had that ideal balance of savory and slightly sweet without being overpowering. You can tell it was done with care. The tempura was just as impressive. Light, crispy batter with zero greasiness. The eggplant was soft and almost creamy inside, while the sweet potato added a nice natural sweetness that paired really well with the salmon. I finally stopped by Hamada General Store. My excitement to finally try this place was matched with an awesome brunch. The order: Ahi Cakes with Dynamite & Kabayaki Sauce on the side and Furikake Rice, Potato Mac, and Pickeled Veg Talk about being smacked in the face with flavor. The ahi tofu patties already packed a bunch of flavor and a nice ginger kick. Then take a bite with the green onions and rice crackers for a fresh zing and crunch. Then taking a bite in the dip of their dynamite (spicy aioli) and kabayaki (Teri style) made for that sweet, tangy, Lucious bite with a slight heat kick. Their potato Mac just zipped up to my top of the list Mac salads. It's soft, creamy, and oh so great. We were greeted with smile and friendly staff. Food came out in a jippy and delivered to our table. There is a small rustic and homey designed seating area with a TV. We will define it be back as there is a lot more on their menu I want to try. It was breakfast time and I was craving loco moco. I have yet to find a stellar loco moco on this island that has knocked my socks off. One of the most important criteria to me is that the gravy must be dark and flavorful and the patty must be fresh and moist, not hard or chewy. I did a search on my Yelp app and came across a photo of Hamada's loco moco with super dark gravy. That was all I needed to see! I jumped in my car and headed down there. They're located in Kaka'ako off of Ward & Queen St. They have free parking in front of their restaurant, which is a bonus! As I entered, I was surprised how large the interior was. I was expecting a little hole in the wall. I was also surprised how empty the restaurant was. There was only one table occupied at 10am. I didn't really look at the menu because I knew I wanted the loco moco. The description read: Smash Burger Patty, Two Waialua Farm Fresh Eggs, Homestyle Brown Gravy & White Rice for $21. I ordered it with my eggs sunny. It didn't take long for my dish to arrive at my table. It was humongous and looked promising. The first bite I took, I could tell that the dark gravy was spot on and very delicious, but I wasn't a fan of the smash burger patty. It was a little on the hard side. Therefore the 4 stars instead of 5. Employees were friendly and the restaurant was clean with the tables spaced out well. I will say this - I wanted to like this more than I did. I'd heard good things about Hamada General Store for months and just never got around to visit. The staff were friendly. The food was maybe 3/5. I ordered the fish n chips n dip. The tsuyu dipping sauce was a nice twist and a welcome sweetness to the dish. It was a large piece of fish as well. But it was just good, nothing over the top. I liked that the fries came with the meal, you didn't have to worry about adding a side. My friend had the salmon katsu and finished it all. I thought it was a bit fishy, but that's also how salmon is. I wanted to try the yuzu lemonade, but talked myself out of it. There are about maybe 8 tables or so to sit at, and a clean bathroom. I appreciate that there's dedicated parking spots out front, a rarity at most places in Kakaako. Was it good? Yes, good enough. Will I be chomping at the bit to go back? Not yet. read more

Hamada General Store is one of those places where I check the specials menu first because it always has unique offerings. The food is tasty and served in generous portions. Some examples of specials that I would definitely get if I saw them come up again include: the HGS "famous" fried chicken bowl, kalua pig omelette, ebi sandwich, and anything with their house chili. If I do order from the regular menu, salmon katsu is my go to; and if I'm thirsty I may also go for a Vietnamese coffee, yuzu lemonade, or green river. They have a parking lot and I've never had trouble with parking because most folks pick up their food to go. Finally, service is great. read more

My brother found this place on Yelp and, after checking it out online a bit, it looked good for a try. At first glance, it gave me the impression of a small Hawaiian country style diner which served a variety of comfort foods. Not being familiar with the place, it wasn't too busy so we went up to the ordering counter to check out the menu. For first timers, it may be difficult to choose what to order as everything sounded so good! But that's a good problem to have.....well, so we thought. gazing at the menu for a minute or so, the young girl watching us and ready to take our orders just came out and said to us...."We are closing soon"......meaning, you want us to hurry up and order now? Closing soon? It's 1pm and the sign at the door says this place closes at 2pm....I think we had plenty of time. She wasn't very helpful and kept repeating the wrong thing when we placed our order, so we weren't to happy about this. Anyway, we later interacted with the other lady here, who seemed much nicer, so that helped to calm our nerves a bit. Anyway, I ordered something I was more familiar with and liked very much.....a tuna melt on rye with fries....which I believe was a lunch special not on the menu. We also ordered the Salmon Katsu .....which was panko breaded fresh atlantic salmon, with various custom sauces, and a side if rice and potato mac salad. The food was actually tasted very good.....was made with very fresh ingredients, and was very comforting. We all enjoyed everything we ordered. Tucked away on a side street off of Queen, the Hamada General Store is a great lunch option for locals. You wont see any tourists at this venue, and the traffic is steady. We had to wait for a set as this was was so busy. Ordered the Aloha Plate which was a combination of poke, kailua pork, mac salad, rice. the portion was large and the price was $20. Super fresh and delicious. They have several tables for in store seating and there is a restroom in the venue. Plenty of free parking outside on Queen street. We've been wanting to try out Hamada General Store for a while and glad we finally had the chance! Overall, really good food and huge portions. We'll definitely be back. Our favorite plate was the braised rib loco moco. Reading reviews it looks like this was something on the menu that they took off a while ago so I was so happy to see it as a special for the day. Ribs were so tender and moist. The gravy was really good and eggs were perfectly cooked. Our next favorite was the salmon katsu. Salmon was perfectly cooked with a crispy crust. It's topped with the sauce used for spicy ahi poke and katsuobushi. Sadly the last thing we ordered we didn't enjoy. The wafu hamburger steak had nice flavors but the hamburger was very tough and dry. The mac salad that is included in all the plates is so good! I am really picky with mac salad and this may be the best I've ever had. They have their own parking lot so parking was a breeze. They have some tables inside but it looked like most people got take out. Although we went on a Saturday at lunch time, our food came out pretty fast. We will definitely be back! read more

Holiday so Ma watched baby, and Hubs and I went fishing. By 10-ish he was hungry, so we decided to go grab food and picnic. Easy to find, but we drove past-ish and had to go in the Exit. Only 1 other truck, so not too bad. Stalls are tight for trucks...so if you are a crappy driver, go park the street. Menu looked good, then we saw the Specials. I was torn between 2, so girl suggested the special since you don't know when that will happen. Good point. Went with the Fried Chicken plate. Hubs got the Bacon Guac Onion Ringy burger...a special also. Hot damn, the plates were heavy. My plate had a layer of rice on the bottom. HUUUUGE scoop tuna spag mac salad. To me that is how mac salad is supposed to taste. I don't care the shape of my pasta, but the flavor was spot on like the old school okazuyas. 2 BIG pieces fried chicken. Cooked perfectly, nicely salted. Probs one of the fave fried chickens on island...pretty sure they should have that on the regular menu. Hubs burger was huge also. We stopped by Hamada General Store this morning for brunch and we went home full and with enough food for the rest of our day! I ordered today's special Breakfast Burger (smashed burger, hash brown, American cheese, fried egg, bacon, mayo on a brioche) that came with crinkle fries--we love crinkle fries! Rani. R. Ordered the loco moco that he heard was a winner. The burger was a little messy (I wrapped it in a napkin, which took care of that) and so piping hot!! It was amazing, and yes, I had it for brunch and dinner. The loco moco gravy was super rich and dark. So flavorful! Service was quick and friendly, parking was easy, and the restroom was easy to get to when I needed to wash the burger juices off my hands. There are about 6 tables, and some tvs in the dining area. Amazing little spot in Kakaʻako! You know that green building everyone drives by on Queen Street but never thinks to stop at? Stop. Immediately. This place is a hidden gem! It's got that classic walk-up diner feel--small space, super casual, shorts and slippers totally welcome--but the food? Absolutely killer. We tried the special smash breakfast burger and it was a 10/10. Perfectly done and paired with crinkle cut fries (my fave!), so definite win there. Also got the fish and chips sandwich--wasn't sure what to expect but wow. Soft bread, crispy fish, pickles inside (which I loved)--another solid 10/10. They also have tables for you if you choose to dine in .I saw that there was a menu for the special of the day and couldn't help myself but select garlic chicken. The service was great and the lady who took my order was really nice. At first I thought that the prices were a bit high, but after receiving my platter of food, the cost of it made a lot of sense. The portions were huge! If you have a big appetite, this will definitely fill you up! If not, you could easily share the platter with another person. I loved that they also had a scoop of spicy ahi, mac salad, and pickled radish with the garlic chicken and shrimp tempura. The bottom of the platter is also filled with rice. I got the loco moco, egg over easy and gravy all over! This was one of the best I've ever had. We went there at about 1030 on Saturday and I'm glad we did. It got very crowded shortly after. The service is good, they're very friendly and the food made fresh came out quickly. It was quiet when we first arrived but did get loud once it started to fill up. Not a problem for us. I really love seeing what's on the menu, like it's one of the very few things I will open instagram to check out what's on the menu. It's great to see a restaurant pushing the envelope on what local cuisine is. That is my four stars did for the culture. I had a mix plate and I dove into it with reckless abandon. I got the tonkatsu sandwich (I am a sucker for a good katsu sandwich!) The service was very good and although they were busy my food was brought out to my table in about 10 minutes. The sandwich came with 2 good size breaded chicken filets on it and was topped with fresh cabbage, katsu sauce, and it looked like some type of aoili sauce and had a large side of fries with it. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the cabbage was fresh and added a great crunch to the sandwich. Whatever tonkatsu sauce they use was SUPER delicious also. Ordered takeout for a company lunch, so due to the slight delay between receiving the meal and actually eating it, it may have affected its quality. The burger was good, it was quite juice and flavorful, the bun was perfectly buttery and toasted. A very indulgent lunch that's for sure. Maybe due to my typical burger orders, I just expected the patty to be slightly bigger/thicker to get proportionate to the buns. The fries were mediocre, most weren't as crispy as I'd hoped but it was a fine pairing with the burger. Overall, a decent burger but nothing to write home about. It seems like their popular salmon plate could be a more appealing alternative if I was to visit again as my coworkers seemed to all enjoy it. It was a big burger cooked medium very juicy! It is a definite must try! Oh and it came with lots of fries! Second time here I had something on their Todays Special and I can't remember what the name of the plate was but I can tell you there was some seriously tasty Kal-bi - word cannot express or describe how tasty and soft it was!!!
