I really love seeing what's on the menu, like it's one of the very few things I will open instagram to check out what's on the menu. It's great to see a restaurant pushing the envelope on what local cuisine is. That is my four stars did for the culture. I had a mix plate and I dove into it with reckless abandon. It definitely has more of a home cooked feel. Some of the textures and flavors not exactly what you want it to be. They don't disappoint. The reuben was loaded with meat a lots of kim chi versus the usual Cole slaw. Innovative spucyvtwistbon a classic. The HGS burger was juicy and featured fresh pickles and their creamy burger sauce. Fries were fine: crinkle cut and okay but suffered from the trip home. No worri6, that's what air fryers are for! Heard so many good stories about their plate lunches I couldn't resist. Service staff friendly and efficient, keep waiting time to a minimum. Besides their daily specials which sound enticing I decided to go old skool and got their Loco Moco. Let's break it down. Gravy was excellent, perfect consistency, full body beefy flavor. It was a big burger cooked medium very juicy! It is a definite must try! Oh and it came with lots of fries! Second time here I had something on their Todays Special and I can't remember what the name of the plate was but I can tell you there was some seriously tasty Kal-bi - word cannot express or describe how tasty and soft it was!!! If you're coming here for the first time, the directions may take you behind the building - keep going down Queen St. until you see the green paint... we learned the hard way! The restaurant itself is spacious and clean with a decent amount of seating. Their team is accommodating and our food came out within a reasonable time. Hamada General Store has been on our bucket list for some time so we finally decided to try it before we leave the island. It was a bit difficult finding this place because it's set back from the other businesses due to its parking lot, but we saw it just in the nick of time. Parking is limited and the spaces are a bit tight, but luckily we made it out of there before the cars next to us. Prior to our drive here, I checked their Instagram page for their specials of the day and was instantly sold on their wet burrito special. So we ended up ordering 2 of those, a tonkatsu sandwich, and their famous banana pudding. I've never had fries come with a wet burrito, but I have to say it was quite tasty. I love my burritos and I love my fries, so of course my soul was over the moon. The portion for the burrito was huge--we probably shouldn't have ordered two of the same thing, but now we know. I don't really know if the portion of the tonkatsu sandwich was worth the price, but my family member said he'd rate it an 8/10, and he is picky with his katsu. While waiting, we noticed their shirts had a dragon on them, so we had to get one since one of us is a dragon. The lady ringing us up for the shirt couldn't have been sweeter. Stumbled upon this place when I was heading home from the gym. Originally I wanted the Pastele Stew Moco on the Specials menu, but we went around 1pm on a Monday and they were sold out. Tip: If you want something from the Specials menu, make sure to go before the lunch rush. I tried the Wafu Hamburger Steak and the HGS Burger. The total came to $34 even. The hamburger steak was bland, but the mushrooms and onions underneath were delicious. The tsukemono (pickled radish) was good addition and brought some acidity that the dish needed. The burger was very juicy and satisfying. It came with crinkle cut fries that we crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. Amazing that the fries survived the car ride home! Was recommended to try and eat here by a friend who works there. I drive by it all the time but I had never even realized it was a really good (and affordable) breakfast and lunch spot! I got the tonkatsu sandwich (I am a sucker for a good katsu sandwich!) The service was very good and although they were busy my food was brought out to my table in about 10 minutes. The sandwich came with 2 good size breaded chicken filets on it and was topped with fresh cabbage, katsu sauce, and it looked like some type of aoili sauce and had a large side of fries with it. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the cabbage was fresh and added a great crunch to the sandwich. Whatever tonkatsu sauce they use was SUPER delicious also. The fries, however, are sometimes crispy and other times limp and taste like it's been fried in old oil. Hit or miss with the fries and sometimes the specials. Heard about this place from Sean K "The Hawaiian Traveler". He definitely did not steer us wrong! The Loco Moco is a hamburger patty (not the frozen variety), 2 eggs cooked to order with lots of yummy brown gravy and a scoop of Potato Mac salad. So ONO! My friend said her mushroom burger was ONO too! I was too busy enjoying my Loco Moco to ask too many questions. Ordered the Yuzu Lemonade. Not as good as the one I had in Japan....but still good...a little on the sweet side for me. After the ice melted some it was less sweet and much better. Hubby said his Green River was a little too sweet also. The employees were very friendly and shared the aloha spirit! Another day, another lunch escapade with my lovely husband, but this time, to a true hidden gem located in between automotive care businesses. Once entering, we were automatically greeted by the friendly cashier who showed us their specials of the day including their daily lunch plates on the screen. We got there by 11:30am and one of their daily specials that I saw on Instagram and was planning to order was already sold out. I decided on their Salmon Katsu. I was not disappointed and totally impressed. I'm not a huge salmon fan, but I do love Katsu! It was delicious. So good, I could eat Salmon more often prepared this way. I made a note to preorder one of their daily specials next time. I recently saw the daily special was Hot Ginger Fried Chicken and did just that! Another delicious elevated plate lunch! I got "Da Charles" (Spicy Ahi Tobiko Crab Don) with add-on ebi fry, which were on special. It was sooooo good! All the seafood was super fresh and generous. Quantity-wise, I really didn't need the ebi fry, but that was also super ono. The only thing that would've made it even better is if it was sushi rice instead of just white rice. I've only come here for a few times for daily specials, but they never have disappointed me. Their prices are very reasonable for the quality gourmet plate lunches/donburis. This was a good find they have good selections for plate lunches. If that is what you are looking for. I got a special rib eye steak and pasta. I think that I should have gotten the katsu curry or something in that line. The pasta was good but not something I get again. It was 32.00 for lunch which is on the high end. I saw online that this restaurant had the best Loco Moco and had to go see for myself. I didn't get the chance to try it at other places because I really wanted to try it here. I ordered the Loco moco plate and definitely something I've never ate before in my life, which the plate itself was good but don't see all the hype around it. I've been here before but never got around to doing a review until now. But I'll do it for the food that I had because I don't remember what I've had the previous times. LoL! We stopped here for lunch while in town doing errands. We had one of their specials that day which was called surf and turf and consisted of slow roasted pork shoulder with gravy and Cajun spiced shrimp. The plate was loaded!!! Pork shoulder was super tender, gravy was really tasty and the Cajun spiced shrimp was flavorful as well. It wasn't overly spicy, just a little kick. Too bad I'm so lazy to drive to town because I'd he going to this place more than once in a blue moon. They have their own parking lot but could get full around lunch time. We got there as soon as they opened on this day and one of the specials of the day was a mixed plate that had, pastele stew, fried chicken and spam. The plate was massive and was more than enough for my husband and I to share. The chicken was fried to perfection and the pastele stew was definitely one of the best I've ever had! Hamada General Store was first opened in 1958 by Hatsutero Hamada as a salvage company and later branched out to produce and groceries. Eventually, grandson Elroy ran the business before retiring in 2007. His kids, Jolene and Brandon, had other work interests and were not interested in taking over. The space was then rented out in 2008 as an orthopedic supply store, then I Love Country Café, and then Egghead Café. Then 12 years late in 2019, Elroy's son, Brandon Hamada (4th generation), took an interest in the space. With partners John Estrella and Neil Nakamura, they opened an upscale plate lunch restaurant while maintaining the same name of Hamada General Store and the same building structure. The three partners had worked about 20 years together and shared the same similar vision even if their culinary styles differed. John is known as the "homey one," Brandon as the "fancy one" and Neil has a passion for Italian and Mediterranean fare. Neil and Brandon worked at the bar Slammers, and the three reconnected in the kitchen of Kanpai in 2008 and moved to Home Bar and Grill, then to the Pineapple Room at Macy's in 1999, and finally to Hamada General Store in 2019. Hamada General Store offers Asian fusion comfort local foods in an upscale style: salads (tofu and watercress); sandwiches (kim chi Reuben, burgers, fish and chips, tonkatsu); plates (braised beef loco moco, salmon katsu, katsu curry moco, kim chi steak and eggs, wafu hamburger, grilled steak and eggs); drinks (green river, Vietnamese iced coffee, plantation iced tea, sodas). The chopped round onions, tomato, ogo relish, and chopped green onions were perfect complements to the ahi belly, including a spicy sauce of shoyu, lemon juice and hot peppers. * Smoked meat combo. The smoked beef was tender and filled with smokiness, and it was complemented with sautéed sliced onions, hot peppers, and topped with chopped green onions. Loved the flavor and spiciness of this dish, as well as the huge piece of perfectly fried chicken. * Steak sandwich with fries. The tasty grilled rib eye was very tender and included in the delicious toasted Ciabatta sandwich were garlic aioli chimichurri (red wine vinegar, red onion, olive oil, mayo, cilantro) and fresh Mesclun greens. The crinkle fries were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. * Mix Plate. Delicious and excellent variety of teri beef topped with chopped green onions, fried chicken, spam, basa katsu with house tartar sauce on a "hidden" bed of rice sprinkled with lots of furikake, potato mac salad, and red non-spicy crunchy tsukemono. All that we ordered have been delicious and of generous portions, and as John says, "It's stuff that we like to eat." The owners' vision is to carry on a legacy of providing good food with a sense of place, always served with Aloha. Their focus is on consistency, attention to detail, and good value. We can attest to that, as we've thoroughly enjoyed their plate lunches and craving for more. Staff is attentive, efficient, and friendly. Open for breakfast and lunch, I usually call in my order for take-out, as your order will be ready at your requested time and need not wait during the busy lunch hour. Plus, some of the daily specials are sold out by 12p, so call in early. Located in Kakaako area on Queen St. directly across from Kiyo's Transmission, look for a green building. With 1,500 sq ft of interior space, it is very clean and modern with an open kitchen. Due to the pandemic, you can eat in with a limited number of tables lining the perimeter of the restaurant (the large tables in the middle have not yet been brought back). Free available parking fronting the restaurant is available and is shared with other businesses in the complex. Hours of operation are Mon to Sat, 9a to 2p. We're looking forward to returning, knowing how delicious the food is. Can't wait to try the wafu hamburger steak, the kim chee Reuben sandwich, and whatever surprises we may find in the daily specials. However if you call in this place will have your food up and ready when you come in granted you give them an estimated time when you'll get there. I did enjoy everything expect be or the fact that their Mac salad was a bit different then what I'm used to. All in all it was a great experience with great customer service and parking wasn't as bad as I thought. This dish however was a special they had for the day. Hefty plate lunches. What's not to like? Hamada General Store has been bookmarked for a while. If we don't include these pandemic years, this place is still relatively new as I remember it was I Love Country Cafe and then some random Vietnamese restaurant that lasted just a short time. Located in Kaka'ako along Queen St, in between Cooke St and Ward Ave., next to Flexa and Master Sha Tao. Now Hamada General Store isn't quite a "general store." It's a take out plate lunch place. The menu is quite limited, but that's not a bad thing since each item should be more focused. Well, there needs to be more focus! I ordered the Wafu Hamburger Steak. It was quite heavy when I received it, and why was that? A LOT of rice! Which I don't mind as long as everything is tasty. It wasn't... The burger patty was noted as cooked to medium to medium well. Nope! It was very well done. The patty was thin, bland, and dry. The supposed ponzu sauce was non-existence. The grated daikon had no taste and just added water. The only items that had taste were the braised onions and mushrooms with their natural taste, potato salad, and pickled radish. Overall, it was quite underwhelming. The flavors and taste were severely lacking, and that dry, bland, thin, overcooked burger patty was a real downer. Honestly, I wasn't that happy eating it from the disappointment. I don't feel I will return as the food gets pricey after the Hamburger Steak. Service was okay. The food the other morning 11-1-23 was excellent my daughter had the rib eye steak I had the Teriyaki black truffle burger n fries and it was delicious as always.
