TL;DR Fantastic value for delicious poke and plate lunches. HUGE portions with lots of variety. Ahi Fever = ONO ----- HanaPa'a 2 is an incredible hidden (?) gem located next door to Rainbow's. Fortunately, I stumbled upon this spot while browsing for lunch options on Yelp. Otherwise I might not have ever discovered this wonderful poke and plate lunch spot. I ordered the Ahi Fever, which was absolutely packed to the brim with food. They practically stuffed a lunch buffet in the box. When I picked up the plate to take home, I knew I was in for a gigantic meal. It was HEFTY. The Ahi Fever plate comes with spicy mayo poke, furikake seared ahi with wasabi aioli, and a kimchi ahi patty. All the main dishes were delicious, but I was equally impressed with the other offerings that were included. In addition to the mains, the plate contained the following: - heaping serving of rice covered in furikake - sizable portion of romaine and tomato salad with dressing - kim chee - beni shoga - daikon - seaweed salad - other assorted pickled veggies The volume and variety of dishes packed into this one plate lunch was impressive. We were warmly greeted by the super aloha owner or worker, who kindly walked us through the entire menu since it was our first visit. Unfortunately, they no longer serve salmon poke as part of the high cost during our January 2026 visit, so I went with an ahi poke bowl with added tako octopus. My husband chose the Shacho mix plate, which he chose with ahi poke, karaage chicken, rice, and mac salad. He loved it and said it was the best of both worlds. My poke bowl was incredibly fresh and delicious, and we enjoyed dining in which they have about 4-5 tables available. The people at HanaPa'a are super aloha friendly serving poke and other Hawaiian plates. The cafe is cute with five tables for dine-in. Most people take food to go. You order at the counter. I didn't want poke so John, the clerk, steered me to the Garlic Karaage Chicken. And, wow, it was delicious. The plate was beautiful. The chicken has a dark crispy coating that is slightly sweet with a bit of spice and a sprinkling of Furikake. The meat is tender and juicy. The salad was dressed with a Thai ginger dressing that was refreshing. I selected the brown rice. The Mac salad was really good (not sweet like other Mac salads). The plate had a lot of food and is easily shareable. (I took half home for dinner.) The place has a steady stream of locals buying poke or the garlic chicken. I thought the prices were reasonable. First off, as a local girl, I've been eating poke bowls forever so I know a good one and let me just say this one was more than good, it was great!! It was $18 for a 2 choice poke bowl and I love the fact that you can choose sushi rice or white rice. Sushi rice for the win! It also comes with namasu and takuan which I LOVE! I got the spicy mayo and ginger shoyu poke. They were both phenomenal and dare I say the best poke I've ever had! It was so fresh and flavorful. Also, the portion size was big! HanaPa'a 2 was my favorite poke place that I tried over a span of two weeks in Big Island and O'ahu. During my one week in O'ahu, I came here three times. I highly recommend paying them a visit. Recommended: -Ahi Fever - this comes with 3 types of tuna: spicy mayo, furikake seared, and kimchi ahi patty. Servce with rice, greens, and mac salad. Great! I really liked having a sampling of the tuna prepared three different ways, especially the spicy mayo ahi. -Poke: I tried the spicy mayo salmon, spicy chili crunch salmon, garlic shoyu salmon, sweet ginger shoyu ahi, sweet ginger shoyu salmon, and Hawaiian salmon. I really liked all of them (except the Hawaiian was a bit salty for my preference). I also really liked the options to pick 1/2 1/2 for poke bowls and the options for rice/greens. They also have non-poke dishes (both mains and sides/desserts). I liked their haupia and kalua pig bowl; the latter was less salty and oily compared to other other kalua pork that I tried. Tonight for dinner I was craving for some kind of fish plate . I remember my sister mentioning that HanaPaa 2 had pretty good poke and plate lunches . So cool I made my way down to Castle St. actually right behind Rainbow Drive inn. HanaPaa is located in the small parking lot entrance on Castle St. Very friendly local guys greeting you once you enter their doors. Counter person explained to me in detail how to order your poke bowl . Starch , sides along with your fish and how you want it prepared. I ordered my wife a Salmon poke bowl which she loves Salmon over sushi rice . I was sold on their Garlic crusted Parmesan Ahi . My plate lunch came with a toss salad along with a Mac salad over sushi rice and 2 nice pieces of garlic crusted Parmesan Ahi. I came around 2pm on a Tuesday and there were open seats. The seating is limited because they share the space with a shave ice place. Food came out relatively fast for the amount of orders they were getting. Both of the bowls had very fresh ahi and i really like the addition of the pickled vegetables. Fish was fresh, sauce was perfect, and I loved that you could choose sushi rice as a base. I wish I didn't eat as much beforehand so I could have tried some of their other options on the menu. Shoutout to Amanda & Felix' (on Youtube) recommendation~ My bf and I shared an ahi fever and it was nothing short of amazing... and I miss this a lot lol. The poke and seared ahi were really fresh, and the kimchi patty was so flavorful and moist. Appreciated everything else that was included in this plate like the salad bed under the seared ahi, mac salad, pickled veg and pickled ginger. Incredible textures and flavors throughout the plate, and the portion was great! There is about 6 parking stalls in a very tight parking lot, but don't let that deter you from coming in here. I've been beating up Shimazu all week and decided today after eating a shave ice as big as my head to try a meal at HanaPa'a2. I ordered a HanaPa'a special which is pork wrapped insides Taro leaves on top of rice and a container of Poi. The food was delivered piping hot and fresh as could be. The taro leaves were not bitter and quite tasty and the pork was tender and full of slow cooked flavor. The rice was soft and tender and cooked to perfection. Every time I've come here there has been several folks eating lunch here and now I see why. The food was delicious, the owner was friendly and if you love pork like I do, then this is a dish for you. read more

As we head to Hawaii's Favorite Kitchens on Kapahulu when you know you know and we were so lucky that there was a single parking stall it was meant to be cause parking here is the biggest challenge and Nadine C had the great idea to head down to HanaPa'a 2 for lunch I was excited but hoping that there was a stall. Walking in the incredible line wasn't something I expected and later realized it was for Shimazu Shave Ice and not HanaPa'a 2 so we head to the counter to glance at the menu and place my order though it was between the Da Garlic Bowl or Garlic Karaage Chicken and the guy says the chicken is really good so....Sold! All plates comes with rice (rice or brown) along with furikake topping, green salad and macaroni salad I got mine with brown rice and furikake and let me tell you it's a huge plate and about 10 pieces of chicken chunks cooked perfectly so juicy and I just loved the crunch on the chicken...but the sauce was too salty for my personal preference sadly and couldn't finish it the menu clearly says shoyu garlic sauce and it was too much and had to let it go. The salad and Mac salad was just excellent, rice cooked perfectly and the staff was very nice even asked if I wanted furikake on it and describe my plate once it was ready. We were lucky as we were waiting for our food that a table opened up so that we were able to enjoy our lunch right here at our leisure as it's nicely air-conditioned and so nice and clean as well it was a very nice and relaxing vibe and really loved the simple yet cool decor of the wallpaper. New location of one of my favorite fish spots! It's located in the building behind Rainbows, sharing the interior space with Shimazu Shave Ice (another favorite of mine). This location has a similar menu to the Hawaii Kai location, with the same good food and service. My favorite item to order is the Ahi Fever (ahi three different ways). On my recent visit, I ordered the Shacho which comes with Misoyaki salmon, salmon poke, and shrimp katsu. We were offered to swap the salmon poke for pork belly, which we did, and it was delicious. We also got a side of ahi poke which was great! My one suggestion for this restaurant is to add the frozen slush drinks that are offered at the Hawaii Kai location. Super nice folks, super delish and generous ahi poke bowl - with pickles and cucumber salad and tasty dressing on the salad greens and good rice (I always get half half). It's actually a choose your fish, preparation, and rice/brown rice/salad adventure. Also, if they have smoked marlin, and you like really well done smoked fish that makes you wanna have a beer or similar beverage, get. If you like non-smoked, get the dried ahi. If you find yourself a nice place to sit and watch the sky and water change color, it'll remind you of how special this place is, the sky, the water, the birds, the people, the culture, how precious and fierce and fragile it all is. The family-owned specialty seafood and poke restaurants serve as a niche for fresh fish diners. This review is for HanaPa'a 2. "HanaPa'a" is a slang word among fishermen when they have a fish on the line, meaning "fish on!" or "hook up." When a fisherman feels a bite, they may yell "HanaPa'a!" to signal their friends. HanaPa'a 2 serves fresh Hawaiian-style poke bowls; plate lunches (fish combos, garlic chicken, chicken katsu); pupus (smoked ahi artichoke dip, kamaboko dip, poke by the pound, fresh haupia); sides (salad, pickled veggies). As I could not decide on the salmon or the ahi, Mike suggestion I get both for the same price. The salmon was drizzled with an addictive delicious sweet kabayaki sauce, and the ahi had a slight crispy, cheesy garlic crust. Both fishes were delicious, although I would choose the salmon. The plate came with pickled ginger, a lemon wedge, sushi rice, mac salad, and green salad. * Kamaboko dip. Thanks to Yelper Gabriel P. for posting a pic in his review; otherwise, I wouldn't have known that this dip was offered. The only place that I know that gives you a roll of Ritz crackers to go with the dip! Nice taste to this dip, as it had lots of minced kamaboko, sesame seeds, furikake, and a little cream cheese, mayo, and sesame oil. I usually make my own but use a lot more fillers like mayo, sour cream, and cream cheese. Servings were not only delicious, but were of generous portions. Co-owner Mike was present when we walked in to order. He was very friendly and welcomed us. After we told him that this was our first time, he happily went over his entire menu and gave suggestions as to what to order. He was very knowledgeable, helpful, and personable. While we were waiting for our takeout orders, we stared chatting and found out that he grew up on the same street in HI Kai that we live on, and he knew everyone living on the street! He mentioned that his sisters probably knew our kids who graduated from Kaiser High about the same time. Small world! HanaPa'a 2 shares the same interior space with Shimazu Shave Ice, located behind Rainbow Drive In. You can dine-in at 5 tables set up that are shared with Shimazu Shave Ice. The area is clean and bright. Co-owner Mike noted that because this location has a fryer, it is able to offer garlic chicken and karaage chicken, as the HI Kai location does not have a fryer. Hours of operation are daily 10:30a to 5:00p. Free parking is available in the small lot fronting the restaurant that is shared with Shimazu Shave Ice. Spaces ae tight, and you will have to reverse out of the lot when leaving. Street parking is also available although difficult to find. We look forward to returning to try other menu offerings! Came to Hanapa'a totally randomly with zero expectations. One of the guys working there explained the whole menu to us, which was super helpful. We got the Ahi Fever--three styles of ahi: cooked, seared, and raw--and every single one was so good. I didn't think I'd like the kimchi ahi patty, but I ended up loving it. My daughter has been wanting kimchi since we landed on island, what a great lunch. The building was super busy so we didn't stay to eat there. Service was fast, staff helpful. Omg! You need to visit this place. The food was amazing and super fresh. Great customer service and it matched the food... Support local! I got the kids garlic ahi with sushi rice and furikake and salad. The ahi was soooooo good! And the portion was very generous and only $10!! We also got the garlic ahi, miso salmon, shrimp tempura plate! Was so good! There's seating available too. The seating space is shared with Shimazu Shave Ice. read more

In the land of endless good poke spots, I'm always searching for a new favorite. It was Keeaumoku Seafood before but HanaPa'a 2 takes my new first place by a long shot. Simply just friendly service and great food. I've never been to HanaPa'a 1 but I imagine it's just as good. Aside from the delicious poke, you must try the Garlic Butter Ahi and Garlic Chicken. 100/10 read more

This morning my wife saw a TV segment featuring this newly open Poke shop. Located on Castle St. in the Hawaii Favorite Kitchen Bldg. I ordered the Hawaiian Style Ahi Poke, and the Spicy Mayo Ahi Poke. Taste was excellent on both. Their pokes are made to order. My wife ordered the Salmon bowl with sushi rice. She also gave a thumbs up We also ordered Kamaboku Dip. Which came with a roll of Ritz crackers. Will try it tonight. The service was top notch. You cannot go wrong at Hanapa'a 2! The ahi katsu is super ono when they have it on special, but the Ahi Fever plate is the absolute best backup. You get three styles of tuna on one plate: a kimchi ahi patty, spicy mayo ahi poke, and furikake-seared ahi (perfectly raw on the inside). FINALLY, Hanapa'a Market is in town and I don't have to drive to Hawaii Kai to get their poke and stuff! Drivers on the road rejoice, it is safe now! This place makes the best garlic poke ever! I tried the chili crisp one this time, but I think my favorite is the regular garlic ahi one! Also had the California Crunch, Ahi Trio, and tried to get a pound of Miso Tako but I think we got someone's Limu Tako instead? All good, the Limu Tako was so yummy I didn't even care it wasn't Miso haha. Everything here is fresh and congratulations, you just found your next favorite poke bowl and lunch plate spot! The fish is buttery soft and the Tako was the delicious meaty pieces, not like some places that now only give you all the chewy stuff and tentacles. The pictures of the food don't do it justice, this food is a work of art! Try it out before it gets crazy busy!
