When I had to replace my car, I went online and searched all the car sites and dealerships for the car I wanted. ALL of them, except for Hammonasset Ford, played all kinds of games with me, claiming the car I called about had "just sold, but I have these great other cars to show you!" Not Hammonasset. No games, the car I wanted was available, no game playing on the price, and everyone was sincerely nice and helpful. I just drove the car home. read more

I was treated very UNFAIRLY by one of the salespersons by the name CHERYLANN WAMBOLT. I made an appointment to test drive a 2021Toyota 4Runner. She new I was coming from PA almost four hours away. While driving up for my appointment for over three and a half hours about half hour before reaching my destination, I get a phone call from her stating the the appointment needs to be cancelled because the vehicle has been sold. Is this how a Hommonasset Ford treats it's customers? That is UNACCAPTABLE!!! I never heard of anyone being treated that way. How do you sell a vehicle that was supposed to be test driven the next day?!?? Went in to order a 2023 Ford Maverick on the last day before they closed the order books for the 2023 model year. After I arrived, I learned that Hammonasset Ford tacks on a $2700 extended warranty. This is because Ford put a stop to dealers gouging customers with dealer surcharges. These car salesmen think they are being clever by calling it an "added service". When I told them that I was unwilling to be part of their surcharge game, they said that it was not optional. I drove to Mystic to order a Maverick from Valenti Ford. Valenti confirmed that they do not have any surcharges or unwanted warranties added to the cost of the car. Again, $2,700 surcharge!! That's 10% of the cost of the truck! Bought new Focus ST in 2017, great experience with sales. Their parts and service department is some of the worst unprofessional service I've seen. I ordered plastic fog light housing for passenger side. They mistakenly gave me the drivers. No problem, so I went to swap. I understand part number is different due to orientation of holes. They told me I had difference of over half what was originally paid. This makes completely no sense and just a way for hammonasset to bring in more money. I've now re ordered from Monaco Ford for same price I paid initially. I will be buying another new car beginning 2021 and it will not be from hammonasset. This dealer embodies all of the problems Ford has identified with their dealer network and why they are moving to on-line ordering. Hammonasset Ford decided they do not like Ford telling dealers they cannot gouge consumers by having a dealer surcharge on their most popular models. Hammonasset's solution: require an "extended warranty" which costs $2,700 to order a car through them. When challenged, their response was "it's not the same as a dealer markup because it is a value-added service". I pointed out to him that it IS the same because it's not optional. His position was that they would not budge. SOLUTION: Drove 30 minutes down the road to Valenti in Mystic. When I asked Valenti about surcharges or unwanted warranties, their response was they do not have either for local customers in their community. Bait and switch is absolutely a fraudulent way to do business. I called and scheduled an oil change for my diesel car for the following week and was told it would cost $60. After arriving, handing over my keys I was in the waiting room and told it would be about $120. Hello - that was double the amount. I was already there and they changed the price and likely expected me to accept the new number. The morons excuse was "the little lady" on the phone probably didn't understand. I exclaimed that was a sexist excuse and took my car and left. I went here a couple of years ago to look at a Mercury. After test driving the car, I asked the salesman to give me a value for my trade in. They drove my trade and wrote up a report, but told me they couldn't come up with a value and needed to consult someone (the car was an Oldsmobile, not an exotic sports car). I left that day with the paperwork and told them I would return to purchase the car the next day with my co-signer. There was no question that I was going to buy the car. When we came back the next day there was a "sold" sign on the mirror...great news until I found out they car hadn't been sold to me! They sold the car right from under me and then tried to push me into a car that had more miles and was in poor condition. I was very disappointed as they wasted my time and that of my co-signer (we both took a day off of work to do the transaction). I then was called by them constantly for a few weeks as they tried to sell me the car again because their other deal fell through. I repeatedly told them I was unhappy about the way I was treated and would not return, but they kept calling anyway. I won't go back. read more

We had recently purchase a new F250 Truck thru CherylAnn Wambolt. This truck is awesome. I have just purchased a new cell phone and not being very tech savvy was having difficulty trying to program this phone to our new truck. I called CherylAnn and she immediately offered to help me out. Not only did she suggest that I come down to the dealership she also offered to update my new cell phone to our Ford Escape as well. I suppose they met my expectations in a dealership. They'll tell you whatever you want to hear to sell the car, and add up charges on the contract last minute such as "Nitrogen charging for the tires", because, face it, you're not going to walk away for $100-$200 after investing that much time. The car I purchased also had an open recall on it, which I brought up several times on more than one day. It was a very simple software update recall, and I requested they perform it prior to pick-up, to which they agreed. They did not (confirmed later by another dealership when the lemon went in for repairs), and ultimately I had to schedule another follow-up appointment. They'll also really tried to hose me on my trade by finding a similar car online for an unbelievably low price. I have to assume their example had flood damage, or a salvage title or something, as it was ~$4000 below market value, and they ultimately offered me over $1000 less than fair trade. Wouldn't buy from them again. read more

The Serviced Representative told me this morning when I dropped off my car for service, with an appointment, that I HAD to pay a $250.00 NON REFUNDABLE diagnostic fee before I could leave my car for service. This fee was in addition to what ever the charges would be for the service performed on my car. I will NEVER darken your door again. I will sing from he rooftops that you are swindlers. This is unacceptable, greedy, deceptive and very poor way to treat your customers. It is in fact fraudulent. If the Service Rep. had told me this was your ' policy' prior to me bringing my car in I would NEVER have made, or kept the appointment. I intend to write a factual letter to the Regional Manager and have this 'policy' investigated. Rating: 5/5 Quality: - Had problem with battery with 2005 mustang V8: replaced for $150 (since will charge $200 for "full" diagnostic unless get some service done). Drove x 1 month. Car "dies" after a few mins. Bad alternator: $500; replaced. Drove x 1 week. Car wouldn't start. Ford stated will re-run diagnostics for $200...seriously? - Went to autozone for batter check=battery is good. Self-check fuses and lines: turns out a) battery terminal wire was rusted; bought wire brush for $5 and problem solved, and b) ford dealer left interior lights on(!?); couldn't tell because drive during the day...tsk tsk on service man. Rating: 0/5 Attitude: Service man stubborn over the phone.. See quality comments. I called about a car online and made an appointment for only 30 minutes from the time of the call. I drove there and when I got there I was told the car was already being delivered. I asked why was I told the car was available on the phone only 30 minutes prior? They wanted to sell me a different car. The old bait and switch, I turned right around and walked out. 4 days later I get a call asking if I wanted to come back in. I asked them why the car that was sold was still on the website for sale? They did not have an answer. I asked them numerous times to please stop calling me, I already bought a car from Carmax, what a great experience that was, I highly recommend them. My grandmother purchased her car here over 10 years ago. Until she died last year, she took her car here for every service, including oil changes and tune-ups; she never took her car anywhere else. Upon her death, my brother inherited her car. After 9 months of driving it, the car shut down on my brother. He took it to his mechanic and found out that all of the wiring was original, as were many of the parts that should have been replaced during a tune-up. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that an elderly woman was taken advantage of by a disreputable dealership. As we have no recourse, I intend to tell this story to as many people as possible. Stay away from this lying dealership that took advantage of a 70-year old woman. read more

I brought my car in for an emissions test and to get snow tires put on in December. I had an appointment made and was told to pick my car up in an hour. I received a call saying that my brake pads and rotors had to be replaced, so understandably, it would be longer than an hour. I was told it would be another hour. 5 hours later (after already having gone back once) my car was ready. I asked how the emissions test went and they had forgotten that's what I went there for. Had to wait again. Turns out the emissions test was impossible because the "computers could not communicate with my car." No matter who I asked no one could give me a straight forward answer as to why this would happen, and their only solution was to "try again later". So after paying for all of that I took my car back to NY. I heard a banging sound coming from my rear passenger tire. I brought my car in to a shop in NY and turns out Ford had broken my emergency brake shoe. Cost me $348.40 to replace and another $37 for a new emissions test (which my car passed... so I don't know why Ford couldn't do it). So this whole thing turned out to be a big waste of time and money. Ford did reimburse me $240 for the emergency shoe, but I'm still out $108.40 on top of paying for 2 emissions tests, instead of 1. So I give 2 stars instead of 1 because of the reimbursement for the broken emergency shoe. I don't see myself going back there for any kind of service. read more

We were in the market for a new car and referred here. The dealership has a no hassle sales price, which is great. They give you a pretty low price without having to haggle. However, on the new model year car we wanted they were pocketing the rebate from Ford on top of the "low price" they were giving you. Once we went in there to look at cars, the calls and emails started flying. We asked the sales staff to stop calling every other day and sending emails, that we would contact them when we were ready. I can't decide if they should get a two or three star review but I think as far as sales go they are pretty average, so three stars. They were always polite and helpful, not too pushy on the floor but they get deductions for the annoyance in calls/emails. We've also had oil changes/check ups done here. Staff seemed pretty knowledgable. They didn't tell us anything I wasn't expecting them to say about what needed to be done. I think the service department is pretty average. read more

Tried to call and schedule service for my car. All you can get is an answering machine. No one ever returns the call. I scheduled service on-line and specifically ask for a return call to confirm the appointment. No one ever returns the call. Upon arrival at the scheduled date, ask to speak with the manager to let them know that they have communication issues as the scheduler does not return calls. Manager was argumentative and very unprofessional. Basically refused to service the car due to letting know that the scheduler does not return calls. Long story short - called Branford Ford, spoke with a service writer (Nick) who was happy to see the car the same day and fixed the warrantee issue. A+ service! Remember you have choices where to bring your car and there are way better choices than Hammonasset Ford. Think of Branford Ford, Whaling City Ford, Saybrook Ford, Dowling Ford, Tasca Ford, Hoffman Ford or others. Even Goodyear, Firestone, Midas, or others are better choices. If they cant provide good service why would you want to buy a car from them? read more

I started to smell exhaust in my vehicle, and obviously was concerned. Did a good bit of research on my end, came to the conclusion that it was my exhaust manifold that was damaged and leaking. Took my vehicle to Hammonasset Ford (which is also the same dealer that I purchased the vehicle from) and was told that no problem was detected. This is despite the fact that I explained to the dealer exactly where the fumes were coming from. The odor was unmistakable, and in fact visible after a cold start of engine. They did not charge me for this visit which is where my experience began to turn sour. The next day the smell was back, and I began to feel ill when in the vehicle. I decided to take it to a local mechanic for a second opinion. They told me that my problem was in fact a cracked manifold. I then took it back to hammonasset ford. This time it just so happens that they were able to find the leak. Originally I thought I was going to need to foot the entire bill. I was quoted by hammonasset ford $1800 with 10 hours of labor. The local mechanic I took the vehicle to actually quoted $1100 for the same job. This large difference is due to the expensive labor charge Hammonasset Ford charges. From this point, the run-around began regarding my warranty. I contacted the warranty provider to speak with someone there regarding the repair bill. During this conversation I was told that the book time on the repair was actually only 6.8 hours as opposed to 10. I was told that the dealer has to charge the warranty provider the book time. Now I don't know if all dealers increase labor time for jobs not covered by warranty, but this one certainly did. In the end my warranty ended up covering the majority of the repair. From my point of view, hammonasset ford either was unable to locate / identify a problem that I could find with nothing more than google on my side, or they found it and didn't tell me. I actually called them after going to the local mechanic asking for a list of everything they did to inspect my vehicle. The technician informed me that he would put this in the mail and send it to me. I never received this in the mail. In my estimation, they also had every intention of over charging me. In the end, it is likely that the price differential is common to auto dealers, but the "missed" defect in my exhaust manifold is inexcusable. Exhaust contains Carbon monoxide, and that is an obvious health concern. I informed them that they have lost a customer in me. read more

The salesperson (Mike Timmons) was nice and helpful, and the price the dealership offered was very attractive. However, the finance manager (Rodney Pomerleau) was not friendly. I was told that over the phone by Mike that any additional services ($50 nitrogen in the tires and $200 VIN etching) would be open to discussion before coming in. Little did I know that Rodney had already included these things on the contract because he said they were DONE already, and we had to negotiate for a while before he agreed to take off the VIN etching fee. So I gave away $50 for nitrogen which I don't need and is really there to help the dealership -- that's fine since their price was really strong initially anyway. What really concerned me is when I went back out after signing the paperwork with Mike and asked where I could find the VIN etching, he stumbled and told me that the physical etching on the glass is "not done anymore and instead we have these stickers." I called back the next day and Rodney told me the VIN etching is done inside the doors. Why couldn't they have been up front about that? It did not leave a great impression, and I can only recommend this dealership with caution. Their price may be great, but it does come with some potential hidden fees. Mike - kudos to you for your great customer service, although the VIN etch thing did concern me (more about integrity than the money). Rodney - you tried to rush me through the paperwork process and were not as open about these fees as I had hoped. Hammonasset Ford - your prices are low, but the way the sales process was handled for me, I can only recommend your dealership to others with a warning or two. One last thing -- not sure if other Ford dealerships do the same thing -- please do not present me a copy of the post-sale survey from Ford and ask me to rate all 5's with that column pre-highlighted by you. I would do that regardless if you had conducted the sale the right way and treated the customer with honesty. However, if you do not, and on top of that add insult to injury by asking me to rate all 5's when the customer service has NOT been superb, do you really think I would do that? read more

AN EXPERIENCE I'D LIKE TO SHARE: In late fall of 2010, my then 21 year old son went to Hammonasset Ford to purchase his first vehicle. He had saved for a down payment and was prepared to make monthly payments. He bought a Ford Ranger pick-up truck. Unfortunately, after several weeks of driving the manual transmission truck, he realized that the clutch motion was causing debilitating pain in his left knee. This theory was tested by spending days at time driving a family member's automatic car, experiencing relief, then going back to the clutch and having the same pain return. As a runner, this pain was just not something he wanted to "live with". He went back to the dealer and they were very willing to work with him and took the truck back as a trade for a 2006 Nissan Maxima with about 60,000 miles. Both my son and I (myself, as co-signer) felt confident enough with the dealership to go ahead with this transaction without taking much time to thoroughly check out the car. (shame on us) We trusted them. In hindsight, I think we were just grateful that they were willing to work with us in returning the pick-up truck. My son drove the car for 5 months, with no real problems, besides a malfunctioning headlight, which he thought he could replace himself. Though he did put it off......In February of 2011 he left home for Army Basic Combat Training / Infantry Training. He was gone for 5 months. His car remained parked in the driveway, covered. When he returned and began driving the car again, there were several issues that surfaced. Tires! Of course, after sitting for that length of time, understandable. He spent nearly $800 on new tires. Then awful grinding noises, and shaking upon braking. Ok, again, after sitting so long, some brake damage. Rear brakes replaced for $400. (at Monroe) But still, the shaking and grinding continued. Front brakes replaced, another $400 (Guilford Automotive Repair). At that time, it was determined that the 2 catalytic converters needed to be replaced. These were covered under a lifetime warranty, but only a Nissan dealer could do the work. But still, the shaking and grinding continued. Though it was now clearly related to the car's shifting.The car was taken to a dealer in North Haven for the catalytic converter work. It was during that visit that we learned that the car's transmission was damaged. We were told the fluid was "dark". And that it didn't get that dark during the time my son owned it. And that the time it sat sitting would not have had an impact. They suggested a "flush", to buy time, but thought that more extensive work would be needed. Possibly a new transmission, a cost of about $5000!! Wow! My son had owned this car less than a year, drove it only 5 months, had already put over $1500 into it, and is looking at thousands more! We went back to Hammonasset Ford. We realize that yes, we bought a used car, and that the 30 day warranty had expired. And we had declined the extended warranty. However, 2 thoughts came to my mind right away. 1) they sold the car fully aware of the transmission problem, or 2) they never fully checked out the car. From what the Nissan Dealer told us, signs of transmission problems were most likely evident at 30,000 miles. The gentleman at Hammonasset took the car for a test drive, and did experience the signs/symptoms of the faulty transmission. He noted that the fluid was "low" and dark, but did have the level topped off. He took a picture of the car's VIN number, then asked us to call him back in a week. I have called several times, and sent an email, but no response. Unacceptable! We take responsibility for the fact that we purchased a POS!, and they really have no legal obligation to offer any type of compensation. But I go back to my previous thoughts: #1. They sold this car, knowing of the problems it has #2. They did not do a used car inspection. The thought foremost in mind now: They took advantage of a young man, eager and excited to purchase his first vehicle, on his own. Tough lesson for him. But one learned. And then, the fact that my calls, and my email, have gone unacknowledged, and received no response. This is probably the biggest disappointment. A family owned, long time local business that doesn't respond. Even if it's to say "we're so sorry for this". read more

This place gives you a false sense of security they sold me a vehicle that had been in an accident with a false car fax report. Nine months after having the vehicle water damage was found and after having me buy an extended warranty they said it was not covered. We are a young struggling family with only one vehicle ...I asked them if they could please take the car back as a trade in and they said it wasn't worth it to them " they would lose money on it " Instead they offered me a rental at their cost $35 a day and I'd have to pay the diagnostic fee of over $200 for them to rip apart my car find out that it's not covered and charge me over $3000 to fix it. I will never return to this dealership or buy another vehicle from them nor will I refer them to anyone I know. Their customer service is horrible and the manager of service Sal is a scam artist taking money out of the pockets of young customers !!!! read more
