In a two-word summary? Dishonest advertising! Gave me the ol' "bait & switch" Drove 1.5 hrs for a specific vehicle. The vehicle price was listed on Auto Trader, then I reviewed the listing on their website. We set up the appointment and visited the dealer. A sales rep allowed us to test drive the car, then offered to repair the minor issues we found. The car itself was a five year old car with 69k miles on it. It was in very good condition. The price listed was competitive. After the test-drive, we went into the office with the sales rep. We told the rep we were paying "cash" (check) and would not be financing (they encouraged us to finance and said we could pay it off early, but after questioning we found out that the earliest payoff would be 6 months). Anyway, the rep disappeared into the other room for a while, then cam back with a sheet of paper that had the advertised price with SEVERAL OTHER LINES OF LARGE FEES added to it, including "certified vehicle cost" and a handful of other fees. These fees totaled $3,547 dollars on a $21,999 advertised sales price (over 16%)! I don't have a problem with sellers/dealers adding reasonable fees, so long as these are CLEARLY disclosed (without "hiding them in very small print or on pages you have to click hyperlinks to get to). THESE FEES WERE NOT DISCLOSED ON THEIR WEBSITE OR AUTO TRADER's website. I am not an experienced used-car buyer and the next time I'm in the market for a used/pre-owned vehicle, I will be sure to ask those questions before visiting the dealership, but such tactics are not honest. We left the dealership without purchasing because now the price went from a "good deal" (per KBB) to a fair/poor deal. I wasted 5 hours of my life on this bad experience. So why am I giving the rating a "2" instead of a "1"? Because other than the failure to disclose the 16% ($3.5k) "markup", they were nice people, particularly the sales guy. But that decision was not made at the salesperson level (at least not without the knowledge of executive management/ownership). A manager/supervisor who came over the desk after the salesperson summoned him said that this was a regular practice. In my own line of business, this is not considered "normal", honest, and a good business practice! TOTAL HONESTY/INTEGRITY is always the best way to run a business! I did end up purchasing a vehicle from another source, and I'm very happy with it (the TOTAL prices was clearly noted!). So what did Hampstead gain from that? In my eyes the work should have been done on the car prior to the sale of the car. Jonathan agreed with me on that. All the staff here are very nice and communicative. They get very busy during the after work hours, so it took us two trips to see the cars we wanted to as well as test drive the cars we were ultimately interested in. Again, nothing against their staff bc they were great but their overall business model strikes me as being not super transparent to get people in the door. Their prices are generally below the CARFAX value which gets you in the door. Then, when you get to talking numbers they add another fee for the work they did on the car to get it ready for selling. So ultimately it ends up being about the same price that you might see on other cars, but the lack of transparency made us go a different direction! read more

They also padded the contract with a fake $499 'Freight' fee on a used car and hid the cost of a forced warranty in the base price so it couldn't be refunded. As we sat down to review paperwork, I was presented with an itemized breakdown depicting several added fees - bringing the overall cost to ~$16,600 - far more than the anticipated tax/title added. Included in the fees was a "HPO fee" of $1895, which was stated as optional on signage; however, described as mandatory in practice. I had a generally positive experience with this dealership the staff was friendly, helpful, and easy to work with, and the car itself runs great. However, I'm extremely disappointed that the rear window defroster was damaged due to improper tint removal before the sale. It's clear a blade/scraper was used, which ruined the defroster lines, and now it no longer works at all. That's not a small issue, and it should have been handled properly before selling the vehicle. Overall, good customer service but this kind of damage shouldn't happen. read more

Do not go here. Bought my first car here over a year ago. 2015 toyota rav4. Listed at 15.9, after fee's and financing ended up being 19+ Typical for a toyota, was fine with it. Took it back because sunroof leaked, automatic trunk stopped working. They cleaned the drains for the sunroof and replaced trunk struts. Was told car was in an accident, had aftermarket parts on front end. Probably shouldn't have paid the normal price for it but whatever. I was eager to get a car. Just after my warranty ended (4 months) breaks started squeeling. Took to my mechanic. He told me they changed the pads but not the rotors or even resurfaced the rotors. Bare minimum to change pads to pass inspection. Brakes were completely screwed had to replace them all. They also covered up a leaky axle. My family knows the owner of the mechanic shop personally. He wouldn't tell me this just to upsell me. Last year over summer, completely soaked inside carpets, flies got into the car because it smelled like mildew. Had to gut the carpeting to dry everything. Sealed up some bad seals. Good to go right? No. A few months ago, trunk lift gate stopped working again. And water still occasionally gets into my rear floor even though I clean the sunroof drains regularly. The trunk now is misaligned. Driver side sticks out to the point it literally does not close all the way (letting more water in!) The frame of the vehicle is damaged. I was not made aware of this at all but they have to had known. They also covered up the water damage to the interior by masking the smell with a bunch of air fresheners on the back floor. Specifically where the water was pooling. Their service manager Jonathan was very nice to me and I feel bad that he has to deal with angry customers because his company sells lemons that he has to attempt to fix. They pressured me to leave a good google review and I was a young guy buying his first car so of course I did. Wish I didn't. Absolute horror story and now I have paid almost 10k (NOT INCLUDING THE 2000 I HAVE PUT INTO REPAIRS NOT EVEN 6 MONTHS INTO OWNING) still owe 10k on a vehicle that is probably not even worth 10k. You can get the dealer add-ons off after the sale but they will drag their feet and be evasive but I was able to get them off after about 2 weeks. I wish I had read these reviews before I went to this dealer. I found a car that I liked, clean carfax, good service history, right year/mileage range, that was listed for $19,385. I contacted the dealership on their website and received a text message from a saleswomen named Alexis. I called the dealer and spoke to Alexis to try to get an out-the-door price but she told me they don't do out-the-door pricing because they are a non-negotiable dealership - whatever that means. She was willing to tell me the fees they have on top of the list price, which were $799 processing, $499 freight, and approximately $650 MVA, plus tax. All total that came out to about $22,700. I was hoping for a little lower but that was in the acceptable range for this car and after getting off the phone I was ready to buy it, pending a test drive of course. I was still hoping I might be able to negotiate some of the fees down so I followed up with a text message asking her to confirm the amount and reason of each fee, which she did. At that point I told her I'd like to test drive the car and asked if I could come at 5:45pm that same day. She respond "yes!!" and sent me a calendar invite for the test drive appointment. My wife and I drove 30 minutes to the dealer and arrived a few minutes before 5:45pm. We were greeted by a gentlemen whom we gave our name and appointment time. He introduced us to their customer concierge Kiran who sat us down at his desk, offered us water, and took our license and insurance information. We were then handed over to another gentlemen who was the salesmen. At no point in the entire did we ever meet Alexis. At this point, the salesmen informed us that the car we wanted to test drive was not available to drive because it was in the midst of having it's bumper replaced. I was concerned because the Carfax didn't list any accidents but he assured us that it was not accident related and it was standard for them to replace/repair any cosmetic scratches or scuffs because they offer their cars with their dealer certification which they call HPO. After making it clear how upset we were at having driven all the way out there after being told we could drive the car, he told us they could temporarily put the old bumper back on the car so we drive it. We were very close to leaving, we should have, but we decided since we liked the car on paper and the price was in the right range, that we should at least test drive it. He told us that if we bought the car that day, he would have the car delivered to us when the repairs were done and we wouldn't have to come back out to the dealership. While we were waiting, I asked him about the HPO certification and he explained what it was - including a 4/4k warranty - and that all their cars come with it. We finally drove the car and liked. At that point we decided we were gonna put down a $500 deposit to hold the car and would complete the purchase once we came back and confirmed the repairs were done to our satisfaction. We began to fill out all the paperwork so when we came back it would be a quick process. We qualified for financing and signed all the necessary paper work. Finally, he handed me a sheet of paper with the out-the-door pricing breakdown and the total was about $24,100! When I asked why, he told me the HPO costs $1300. At that point my wife and I were pissed. We recounted the entire story starting with Alexis, who we never met, and we got up to leave. The salesman asked us to wait while he went to talk to his manager. When he came back he told us that they would give us the car for $22,800, do all the work, but could not give us the warranty. We told him we only do it if they gave us the warranty. He went back to speak with the manager and came back with Kiran, the concierge from the beginning. He told us that they would be unable to give us the warranty without approval from the owner. At that point I recounted the story again and told them we were walking away from the deal. I did say that if someone wants to call me the next day and offer me the car, with the warranty, for $22,800, that I would consider it. And we finally left. The next afternoon, I received a call from someone claiming to be the manager who seemed to have very little information but new that the owner said they couldn't offer the warranty without us paying for it. He didn't even know the price we were trying to get saying "whatever the number you agreed upon". I, once again, recounted the story and voiced our displeasure, told him no thank you, and hung up. The stupid thing on their part was that originally, I didn't know anything about their certification and would have bought the car for $22,800 without it. But after they were so dishonest with everything, I just didn't feel like I could trust them and wasn't willing to make a deal. Poor communication between staff, was asked to come test drive a vehicle which was still being painted when I arrived. No courtesy of a phone call, as if my time and gas are at their disposal, and then I was conveniently asked to place a refundable deposit. I should have known this bait and switch tactic was at the core of this company. When I returned to finally drive the vehicle, I stated I could not purchase the car that evening as I had a lot of work to do and was asked to put down money towards the vehicle while being assured I was not purchasing the vehicle. When given the opportunity to honestly serve you, they will gatekeep pertinent information and hope you never learn of their predatory tactics. After all was said and done, I completed the purchasing process without knowing it nor, was given any paperwork that evening. I was told there was no paperwork as I still needed to return with a check towards my complete down payment. The finance person spent considerable time complaining about the healthcare industry after his quadruple bypass surgery but couldn't give me an honest answer about tags, registration, or warranties. This dealership sold my daughter a vehicle with a prepaid maintenance program that was not clearly disclosed. The program's cost equated to $800 per oil change. We returned to the dealership a week later, and she signed paperwork to cancel the program and receive a full refund. It has been a month since the vehicle's purchase, and she still has not received all necessary documents for registration in Pennsylvania. The dealership now advises that it may take six to eight weeks to receive these documents and a similar timeframe for the refund. I find this surprising, as I had recently purchased a vehicle from a reputable dealer in Maryland and received all necessary documents in a timely manner. The dealership's slogan is 'Come as a friend, leave as family.' However, their actions prove otherwise. They took advantage of my daughter's inexperience as a first-time car buyer, including selling her an overpriced prepaid maintenance program. Although I was treated very respectfully and kind that's about where it stops. I came to see a Toyota- I came here because I was under a time crunch and it was close to my house. Get to dealership couldn't even test drive car because it needed drivers seat. Even with that I wasn't super upset- I get it stuff happens. Then I see the trim around the whole car is peeling, a plastic piece on the windshield was broken (which I was told was from replacing glass windshield), and there was a stain on back seat. As I pointed all of this out I was assured this would be fixed/taken care of prior to picking the vehicle up. Car was not ready when it was supposed to be ready. They needed three additional days, I had to take my rental back so I absolutely needed the car by Monday evening. I go get car Monday evening right before they close. Inside wasn't cleaned well, stain was still on back seat, streaks of white wax all over car, seats were soaked had to ride home on plastic from them cleaning at last second- but I was not even going to complain about that. Next day I realize a piece of trim was not fixed, another piece of trim is now falling off of the car, and the windshield piece was never fixed, and now I also realize the windshield must not have been sealed correctly when they replaced it you can hear and feel wind coming in the car when driving. I call- go in he fixes trim that's falling off. Leave not even two hours later it's falling off again. I have been told these issues will be corrected but it's been a year and here we are. In addition I have only owned this vehicle 2021 for a little over a year, the A/C is not working, the back doors both fill up with WATER when it rains you can hear and feel it swishing around. Original windshield piece that was broken from them replacing it was never fixed, so air still comes in windshield. They never fixed the trim on the car, and the stain is still on back seat. My car was stolen, and I am a single working mom so I was under a time crunch to find a new car. I feel 100% taken advantage of, and am beyond livid to have so many issues with a car that is a little over a year in my possession. Editing to add the drivers side under the steering wheel also leaks inside when it rains- took car to mechanic because the AC is not working and I already need a new air compressor on a car I have had a year to the tune of of almost 2,000$. So I have a car that leaks water inside when it rains, the back doors fill with water when it rains, the windshield was not sealed correctly by Hampstead preowned and they snapped a piece of the plastic so you hear wind inside while driving, the trim is falling off the car. This is a long review, but I encourage you to read it if you want to hear an honest recount of my experience with this dealership. This is likely the only negative review you will find because this dealership has a designated employee to handle and rectify any negative reviews that are left. I started the process of buying a vehicle from Hampstead Preowned over the phone as I live about an hour and a half away. I arrived at the dealership to test drive the car and was immediately taken aback by how unprofessional the sales staff was. There was nobody there to greet you when you walk in, they were all yelling to each other about what they were ordering for lunch and just overall felt very unprofessional. Honestly, I became anxious about purchasing a car from this dealership so I started looking up reviews on all sorts of websites and saw that they had a bunch of good reviews, so I ignored my gut instinct. Knowing what I know now, this makes total sense. After driving the vehicle, I noticed that the inside was still dirty, so I asked if they would have it detailed before the sale was final and the car was brought to me (they did deliver the vehicle for me, which is about the only positive). They also charge an additional $1295 fee on top of the price of the vehicle that is listed online and they state that this is "to make the vehicle as good as new", including an interior and exterior detail. I was told it would be detailed, when it arrived at my house it was still in the same condition that it was previously - not clean. I texted the sales person to ask about this, and she responded with some attitude stating that "she drove the vehicle 2 hours for me and if I wanted it detailed I could bring it back". The next day, after only driving it a few miles, the check engine light came on. I called to speak with a manager about this and was told to take it to Advance Auto to get the code read, which I did. I called back and told them what the code was and they said to bring the vehicle in. I purchased this vehicle for my dad, who flew to PA from Florida to bring the vehicle home. When he called to schedule it for service, they agreed on Monday. My dad showed up on Monday morning and had to remind the service department what he was there for and they said they didn't have the appointment in the books. He had to wait around for a while before they let him know they would take the car to fix it. A few minutes after he left the dealership, I received a phone call from the service manager stating that he couldn't remember which car my dad dropped off and why it was there. They also called my dad three additional times to find out what it was there for because they couldn't remember. When we called for a follow up to check on the status, we were told that the check engine light had nothing to do with the code that Advance Auto said and it was something entirely different so they had to order different parts. 2 days later, my dad went to pick up the car to drive it back to Florida and a couple hours later the check engine light came back on. Updated to add: someone did reach out to me after this review was left and was very friendly and helpful. The check engine light has gone on and off numerous times and a few different shops told my dad a few different things about what could be wrong with it - he bought new parts and we were asked to send a receipt showing the purchase (we assumed we'd be reimbursed for this). We didn't hear back after sending the receipt. After the review had been up for a few days, I was asked if I would consider taking the review down in exchange for half of our first car payment being paid by the dealership. I agreed. A week later, I asked about the status of the check being sent and I was told that the check wasn't going to be sent until we deleted the review, which is not what I was told initially. I looked at the ad and decided to check out the dealership reviews. GLAD I DID! I tend to dismiss the quick comments because ANYBODY(like employees, friends and family of the business/owners, etc) can post comments. When people take the time and provide extensive details, then I generally start paying attention. When others are posting the very similar experiences, then it's time to start adding them up. I am so very sorry for those who had to endure what you've gone through with this dealership, and I am so very thankful you took the time to let others know and save us the heartache you experienced. These people are frauds. The car I wanted was 16,700. Then they said it's 18,700 if it's not financed. So I said okay ok I'll finance and the price after their fees and 1,000 tax was 19,500!! 3 grand in fees plus tax . I did a pre application form online for a 2016 Mazda 3 then drove over an hour to come look at the vehicle at Hampstead. Saw it online and immediately wanted to check it out/make a purchase that same day or weekend. I arrived early for my appointment. The sales person (I'm going to leave his name out of it) went to go get the car so I could test drive it (without announcing he was doing so. I came out of the bathroom and he was GONE!) I sat for about 30 minutes. Nobody spoke to me or offered me anything at all. Right as I'm ready to walk out after waiting so long, the sales rep comes back in and says "Sorry, we had to jump start the vehicle." I'm automatically thinking "something is either wrong with the vehicle or nobody is coming by to test drive it. I bet can make a deal!" I thought WRONG! Test drove the car. It was nice but I had some concerns about how rough it drove around 45 mph, the fact that the interior had flaws (Mazda symbol was completely faded, scratches on the computer screen, dashboard starting to crack from the sun, etc) and the car only came with one key. Anybody who drives a Mazda knows a spare key is $900+ AT LEAST (for a switch blade key. This was a push to start and I'm sure it costs significantly more) to purchase and have programed. Car was listed for just under 15,000. It was a decent price for the vehicle in perfect condition; HOWEVER, I needed them to make a deal with me because it was NOT in perfect condition. I waited a day and offered $12,500. They only informed me that they declined my offer after I called and left the sales rep a voicemail. Thought it over more and called back to make another offer. Agreed to pay $900 less than sticker price , they need to give me a decent amount on my trade in, I told them I want to decline the HPO certification (it was listed as optional on the website and costs $1300,) and asked them to waive their processing and transportation fees as they are not required by law. The sales rep told me they cannot take one penny off of the vehicle, waive any dealer fees and that the HPO certification was NOT optional. it is- in fact, REQUIRED! I was beyond upset. The listings on ALL of their vehicles state: "Price does not include tax, tags, registration, dealer process $499 (not required by law), Freight $299 (not required by law), and Optional $1295 HPO certification." Optional and required have the complete opposite meanings!!!! I would never have wasted my gas, time and money to see the car knowing this! It does not cost a dealer a dime to process paperwork. Charging $500 and being unwilling to waive it for a sale is insane. Why am I paying a freight fee if the vehicle is dead on the lot already? Insane. The HPO certification being listed as optional (but really required) is insane. This is the definition of FALSE ADVERTISING! This dealership was going to have me pay sticker price for this vehicle that was NOT up to par then tax on an additional $2100 worth of THEIR dealership fees. Then sales tax on a 15k car, tags and title. This car would have cost me close to 20k after everything was said and done! I've heard nothing but horror stories about their service department and the "optional" HPO certification. I let the sales rep have it for wasting my time and STILL told him that if they can come down from the price- id purchase. I had 2.5k in my pocket, a car to trade in and was ready to give them a sale. I bet this man never even asked his manager anything. Fast forward to 5 days later. They must have heard me out and came down from the price. This car is now listed at 13,980. Did I receive a phone call? Nope! HORRIBLE business practices and false advertising all over their website. Car was also listed as never having an accident. Carfax report determined that was a lie. If you're going to spend the extra money on dealership fees that aren't required by law, at least go to a reputable dealership like car max where the cars are in excellent shape and they actually honor their warranties. I'd never purchase a vehicle from them at this point and recommend others to stay away as well. Watch out for hidden fees! Ask for all of them before down payment. We did and walked away from the car. If you don't finance through them, they tack an extra $1000 (they call it a "rebate") onto your sticker price. In other words, if you pay cash, you're going to pay an extra $1000 forcing us to use their finance instead of paying cash. Astronomical HPO/Freight fee ($1000). This is for an inspection that they promised they would do for free. Proc/Doc fee $500? Too much! There's more but from just the hidden fees I showed you, you are paying $2500 over the sticker price.
