We have been with another "local company" for years for installations and service. On a semiannual inspection on 6/17/26 we were told that our 9 year old split units both had coil problems and repairs would exceed $13,000. Upon checking we discovered that this long time, local company had been sold to a national company/fund which acquires and then operates smaller local companies. We decided to obtain a second quote and Daniel from Hamstra spent 3 hours checking the systems and concluded it was in good working condition. We just signed up for a service plan with Hamstra and will be using them in the future. In our opinion the consumer needs to beware of upselling and if you question a quote obtain a second opinion. read more

My landlord chooses to use this contractor so I can't do anything different, but I did have another AC guy come by for a trouble shoot and he said it could be fixed quickly. The customer service Jen needs training, I have been with Hamstra for 4 years I am on a monthly service plan . I called to get my 6 month checkup , filters changed The first appointment was 4 months out. Spoke with a nice agent which asked me to call the day of service to find an estimated time that they would arrive. Called to get my estimated time , Jen told me that they are not able to tell me that , I explained how I was instructed to call the day of the appointed which I have done other times . My lovely 7 year-old D R Horton home AC decided to stop working so I called Hamstra and technician Richard came out 4/1/26 on work order 00173242 and did an amazing job diagnosing my blown AC/Heater blower motor that needed to be ordered. The next day, I received an email from Mike Harmon with a total estimate of $1,184.26 for the new motor and capacitor. I decided to look up the parts myself and a brand new motor costs $476.74 and the capacitor was like $12 which included tax and shipping to my home. It literally took me 30 minutes to remove the old motor and 45 minutes to install the new motor. I have never done any HVAC before and it still only took me 1hr 15min total and I saved $695.52 by doing it myself. I understand an HVAC business needs to make a profit which I have no issues with. I would have paid $200/hr in labor but they tried taking advantage of me by trying to charge me almost $700 for about a 60 minute job which is unacceptable. I now have a functional AC unit that's blowing nice cold air throughout my home. HVAC companies are great for the initial visit to diagnose your issue(s) and typically charge you $100-$130 to come out. Afterwards, ask them what the issue is as well as the part number(s) and do your own research to see if this is something you feel competent in doing yourself and save yourself HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS!!! read more

We've used Hamstra in the past for AC tune up and it feels like they're always trying to sell you something, if not some part you "need" it's their maintenance packages. We've seen good reviews other than the high prices so we keep calling them. Glad we didn't purchase a service package because they are not actually a 24 hour company. Our air conditioning went out after a midnight. Gave them a call and after being stuck on hold with a pre-recorded message for a while, finally gave up on trying to schedule. read more

We have been Hamstra customers since 2013 and in fact, Hamstra installed all 3 of our HVAC units when we built our house in 2011. Since then they have serviced our equipment with knowledge and professionalism without fail. Very early on we were introduced to Dave Thompson as our service technician and we were so pleased, we have requested him ever since, and he is not only an amazing technician, but he's become our trusted HVAC advisor. However, Hamstra isn't a one technician company. Dave's colleagues have jumped in to assist whenever necessary. Hamstra has deep bench strength. The office staff members are also outstanding!! There are quite a number of heating and cooling contractors here in Tucson. Many seem to spend quite a bit on advertising...tv and radio. We don't see a lot of Hamstra adds, and we assume that happy customers like us are their best form of advertising. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with hamstra they intalled my AC unit 8 years ago. I have a service plan with them. The techs who come out are friendly, helpful and professional. They answer all my questions and are very clear about what services are performed and recommendations. I am also currently in the process of having a couple mini splits installed by them. Living in the desert my AC units are appliances that i think are worth their weight in gold. You may be able to find someone who will give you a lower quote but I think you pay a little more for quality of service, consistency, and the ease of mind that you are getting a fair price for installation, maintenance, and fast and reliable customer service. I will continue to use them and would highly recommend them. read more

Let me just say if you have any heating and cooling needs they are the one's for it in Tucson. They maybe a little more pricey but I promise you these people are worth every penny. They are on top of everything from staff who does appointments down to technicians and they work together which most places miss. The service was ah-mazing! Technicians knew what they were doing shows us past mistakes that other companies have done and what they did to correct it. (backstory we used a horrible company before them to first install our brand new unit. We didn't know better and went with cheaper option. That ended up costing us so much more in long run, and also finding out that company did some sketchy things). I was extremely impressed with Hamstra and would recommend any day to anyone in Tucson! They also have yearly maintenance plans that are affordable and we will definitely be signing up! they've gained a life long customer from this experience. read more

We had a HVAC fan go out in August of 2021. I found Hamstra here on Yelp with favorable reviews. Setting up the appointment and having the service technician come out was an easy process. The fan motor was replaced and everything seemed fine. I have to note I thought the pricing was rather high, maybe the "Tucson in August price", not sure. I'd shop around if the situation had allowed more time. The reason for this review is not this service but rather the follow up. In late December the fan started to act up and noticeably something was wrong. I called back to have a check up. Technician came out and diagnosed the fan was bad. They stood by their service and replaced at no cost. That is important and is appreciated. read more

Hamstra has a "Silver Program" for $600 per year that entails biannual preventive maintenance inspections performed in the Fall and Spring to head off problems with heating or cooling systems respectively. When the Fall inspection wasn't performed, Hamstra engaged in a song and dance, refusing to discuss a $300 rebate for the work that was never done. The technicians in the field are first rate; however sadly, middle management is rife with mealy-mouthed weasels who won't right a wrong. read more

My professional background is as an HVAC, plumbing and gas design engineer. I am currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in Arizona and Colorado. In Colorado, I had trusted HVAC companies that I would refer my clients to and that I would use myself, but we recently moved to Tucson so did not have such a company here. Here is my experience with Hamstra. We wanted a new ductless mini-split heat pump system for our guest house even though the existing system was still operational (was old with uninsulated ducts in the attic). I performed the load calculations and communicated with Hamstra what equipment I would like installed. Hamstra sent out one of their "comfort specialists", Ryan. Even though I indicated what type and size of equipment I would like, I expected Ryan to perform a load calculation as they are required for permit. Here's what happened next. Ryan first indicated that there were no TEP rebates available which was not the case. Once I researched the rebates myself, Ryan indicated that he would take care of it which was not the case when the final invoice was issued. I had to complain to get this rectified. The final invoice was issued without a permit being applied for. Permits should be applied for prior to installing equipment. After I asked about the permit, it was applied for that day without the required Manual J load calculation and Manual S equipment selection. The bldg dept had requested a resubmittal on 3/15/2024. Nothing was done by your company. I asked about the permit on 3/21 and received a call from Ryan asking to take additional measurements. Load calculations should be performed prior to bidding the project and installation. The measurements were taken by Ryan on 3/22. On 4/2, Ryan indicated that the load calcs and other requested information were already submitted to the bldg dept. Since Hamstra was proving untrustworthy by this point, I checked with the plans examiner myself and he indicated that nothing was submitted by Hamstra. On 4/3, I wrote an email outlining the multiple failures by Hamstra to this point. I received a call from the sales manager, Mike, apologizing and saying that he would stay on top of it. After my email on 4/3, a blank document was submitted to the building department per City of Tucson permit review detail. On 4/8, a permit was issued for the wrong unit number (after telling Hamstra 3-4 times that this was for unit 2). You would think they would ask which unit number if they weren't sure. Two months after the equipment has been installed, a permit for the correct address still has not been issued. As far as the equipment installation, we are happy with that. The installers did leave 15+ pieces of sharp sheet metal pieces around the backyard from the chases they created for the refrigerant and condensate piping; not great when you have a dog, but we picked them up right away. The installers also weren't sure how to set up the Mitsubishi Kumo Cloud software for system control. The app is set up for the installers to set it up initially, then transfer it over to the owner. So I had to do that myself and it should have been part of the installation. My opinion is that the cost of the installation did not remotely match the quality of service received. I have never had to be so involved and manage my own project after paying a contractor to do so. I could not in good conscience recommend Hamstra to my clients. 2.5/5 stars. read more

Well "Big John" is one heck of a great guy, whom I have only met on the phone. I am in the process of rescuing a family home built in the 50's. Time to say good bye to the ancient gas furnace and swamp box cooler. Negotiating over the phone is tricky - but through conversations and clear estimates via email that have been so refreshing and reassuring that I gladly have given the "go ahead" for the purchase and installation of a new heat pump. Updated 11/13/2023: I worked with Hamstra Heating & Cooling for several months (yes, it took months from start to where we are now). Dustin (the project manager), Terry (the HVAC engineer) and their team finally determined I needed some new venting in my attic to carry the AC's cooler air across to my front bedroom area so it will cool off during the summer months here in the desert. We'd agreed they would remove the older insulated venting for new insulated venting. However, when I requested and received pictures of the new venting and the work performed prior to payment, it appeared from the photos they shared that they did not use insulated venting but a clear, uninsulated venting. However, fortunately, I now know that was not the case. Mike, a customer service manager, called me after seeing my initial Yelp and Google reviews. He was able to explain to me the error in using the photos they shared to see what work they had completed. After more than 20 minutes on the phone with Mike, I finally felt comfortable that Hamstra did use a quality venting material to complete that part of the job, and the team went above-and-beyond to ensure an additional area was also replaced that had deteriorated beyond it's useful life. I appreciated Mike's follow-up call -- hence my updated review here -- but wish he could have called after my phone conversation with the admin (who said she'd have the project manager call me back to help answer my questions), my subsequent emails to her, and my follow-up letter sent snail mail to his billing office. I was told during a couple of those communications that the project manager would contact me, yet he did not do that follow-up over the course of several weeks until after my Google review and Mike contacted him for a status (apparently there are two of us with the same name in the project manager's phone and he was trying to communicate with the other Brenda). I will use Hamstra again and give them another try when I need HVAC service as I appreciate the follow-up since my initial Google review. I hope the communication is better for future needs and hope the turn-around time in-between our communications is better and faster. I hope I can then improve the star rating to at least a 4-star, if not a 5-star. read more

A tech was able to come out the day I called and diagnosed a dead compressor. He said someone from the office would be contacting me shortly with an estimate and a time frame for doing the service. The estimate was $3800 and I was told it would be 8-9 business days to get the part because it came from the factory. That seemed long to me but I doubt they have an incentive to pad that time. The part came in and was installed. The tech said it would take 4-6 hours. It took 4 and a half hours. When I paid I was told an invoice would be emailed to me. I was surprised it was just one lump sum-not broken down into parts and labor. I finally did a parts breakdown but no separate billing for labor. When I questioned that, I was told they do lump sum billing and don't break out parts and labor. I don't like that. If a job takes less time than was estimated (as here), the customer should be a break on the bill. Thus, four stars instead of 5. But other than that, they were fine. The tech was nice and professional, arrived on time, and worked hard. read more

Thanks for your reply. Because I am a renter, my name would not show in your records but that of my landlord would. I did call Sunday afternoon about 4 and was told I would be called as soon as someone was available. I emailed through your website on Monday morning and also called in about 7 pm. I spoke with someone who said no one works on Sunday and insisted my landlord had to call first before anything could be discussed. My landlord did call and let me know. I then called Hamstra back and was told the earliest time a diagnostician could come would be in 11 days. My landlord told me to call someone else. I called three other companies and the third one answered and was able to send someone out that morning. The repair was completed to get my HVAC unit working again. To Hamstra's credit, they did call back later and said there was a misunderstanding and they would try to get someone out there sooner. By this time, my repair was underway. read more

TLDR: Hamstra does business with a service mindset instead of a sales one. If you have experience dealing with hvac companies, you understand this is rare. Every interaction we've had has been customer focused, compassionate, and just generally very helpful. This is a company that takes notes and follows up to make sure every detail is taken care of. More Details: We were originally connected to Hamstra by accident - we were trying to get information on an American Standard unit to fully compare quotes we had received from other hvac companies in town. The manufacturer routed our call to Hamstra because they are a preferred vendor. When I explained what I was looking for, Hamstra politely asked if they could help me evaluate the existing quotes. Hamstra honestly communicated that some of the quotes on the lower end were not sustainable from a business perspective and we would be risking the warranty should the company go under. Similarly, they were not afraid to call out excessive quotes - again a rare find for any company!! They offered to provide a quote if we were interested and I am so glad we did. There was no sleazy sales tactics - Ryan was great and fully explained his recommendations and answered our questions every step of the way. Beyond just the specialists, the technicians and customer support team express pride in their work and you can hear that they genuinely care in their voice and the way they conduct themselves. read more

Great service when we needed our old unit repaired. When the unit eventually failed later in the summer, we had to buy a new unit. We got a credit for the previous repair work towards the new unit. Called another company to look at the not blowing cool air issue...tech double checked the battery in the thermostat (that's what Hamstra installed)...checked the filter...major dirty...replaced now have cool air. OK, here's the real deal. First off, all my initial impressions of Hamstra were positive. One of our two outside units wasn't working. Its August in Tucson AZ you call around and try to find someone who can repair it. Our next door neighbor had used Hamstra and loved them. I get an appointment and they come out. I watch the tech do the repair. He tells me that most techs are on a commission, huh I didn't know that! As he starts the diagnostic process he tells me the most common failures that occur: Capacitor, blower motor and then compressor and various other items...He finds the blower motor is bad and that the capacitor is bad. He replaces them both. For each item that he replaces he rattles off how much it will cost to replace them. Bottomline is my bill is $865. I now have working A/C in August in Tucson...life is good! I did some research on the replacement parts that were used since the blower motor was not the exact same motor as the OE one. Plus, since I have two outside units and I am somewhat handy I wanted to see what it would cost to get the same parts and replace them myself on the remaining unit. ( I sent Hamstra a request for info on a good website to find the correct parts for my other outside unit...crickets, no reply) Well the Digi-Motor that they used for the blower motor is a higher tech unit that can be used in multiple applications and saves energy by being more efficient. All good. But the instructions for the digital-motor clearly state that no capacitor is required. My guess is that this motor has one built into it. So I contact Hamstra to ask about the $90 charge to replace the capacitor (incidentally the invoice doesn't breakdown the individual charges, but that is the quote I got from the tech). That email to them occurred on the 2nd of August. Heard nothing back so I sent them another email on the 5th of August, they then replied that Mik% H#$** would reply once he returns from vacation. I am posting this on the 17th of August and still have not heard anything back. Meanwhile I have had multiple contacts from Hamstra wanting to know if I am interested in a maintenance plan for a "small fee"... For a company that touts its customer service, me thinks not. By the way, I ordered and replaced the fan blower motor on my other unit and the capacitor (didnt use the digi-motor) and the total for parts was $182. So for $600 labor and less than 2 hours work (I think it took about an hour total) that's a pretty good return. Guess thats why they don't pay the techs commission... read more

While the guys who came out to look at my system were nice, Hamstra completely took advantage of me. I was charged $300 for a diagnostic, in which I was told that my system needed a new reversing valve and condensing coil, to be fixed for a grand total of $3900 OR I could put the $300 I'd already spent towards a new system for $8000 (their way of trapping you into using their services). I had another company come do a diagnostic, who only charged $80, and told me that the caps were missing from the system which was the likely culprit for the leaked refrigerant, and that both the components Hamstra listed as broken were actually working just fine. They replaced the caps, charged the system, and ran diagnostics again to find the system was, in fact, NOT leaking. They fixed it for a total of $230 - which is $70 less than Hamstra charged me to do absolutely NOTHING except try and take advantage of me. As a young, single woman, I feel Hamstra exploited my heating/cooling naivety and took full advantage of my situation. ALWAYS GET ANOTHER OPINION! As I said, the guys were nice enough, but company policy is clearly to milk their customers for as much money as possible. Stay away! read more

Stay away - these guys are not trustworthy. On a Sunday in July 2020 we noticed that our smaller 2 1/2 ton Trane AC unit was blowing warm air so we called Hamstra and agreed to their price of $200 to come out on a Sunday. The tech arrived on schedule, checked out the unit and said 2 starter capacitors on unit outdoors were no good and replaced them. He did not say what the cost would be. He also said the unite needed a R22 Freon charge because the unit was leaking at the coils. He said he charged 2 lbs. of R22, and again did not tell us what the charge would be. After being at our house for 30 minutes the tech spent 20 minutes in his truck writing out the bill which totaled $980 but we did not receive the bill until Tuesday after I had called their office a couple of times. The bill itemized as follows: Diagnostic service - $200 2 capacitors - $264 (retail cost $28.59 each) 1st pound of R-22 - $171 2 additional pounds R22 - $246 (retail cost $189 for 10 pounds) total = $980 for this work of 30 minutes. I'm not even sure the tech even put any R-22 into the system since the cover plate to the refrigerant charge had not been opened. And the tech did not have a weight scale to measure the R-22 with - maybe that's why the bill he showed me first, but would not give me a copy of, said 2 lbs of R-22, not 3 lbs., as on the final bill they sent. After receiving the bill I of course complained bitterly to the management and they made me a deal for 1/2 the bill. This is the 2nd time I tried Hamstra for AC repair and both times the tech, amazingly the same tech, tried to cheat us, charge us too much and said we needed to replace our unit, the most common ploy of some untrustworthy AC companies. So beware. That is our story - never again, Hamstra. p.s. it's now October 2020 and the unit is working fine - guess the leak is hiding somewhere. What was really wrong that the unit was blowing warm air? The starter cap for the compressor needed to be replaced. Takes 5 minutes to do once diagnosed. read more

Once again we needed help with one of our two A/C units so I put a call in to Hamstra. We were put on the schedule and given a window for the tech to arrive. Shane showed up in the middle of that window wearing gloves, a mask and booties while he was inside. Shane quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it, he went above and beyond by doing things to try to prevent its recurrence. Here's an excerpt from his report: "Today I came out to diagnose why the west system was not operational. Upon inspection I found the low voltage fuse blown caused by the contactor coil. I replaced the contactor under warranty and then ran the system in cooling. I noticed the refrigerant pressure slightly low and added 6oz to the system to bring to recommended ranges. Since we replaced the coil last year I went ahead and did a courtesy leak search at the indoor coil and didn't find any leaks. I did tighten the valve cores to the service port so it may have leaked from that area. Allother checks of capacitor, amperage, and temperature are in recommended ranges." We had Hamstra come in to do the regular maintenance on our AC as we do every year. We had issues in the past so we knew it needed to be done. They showed up on time we almost cancelled as we were not going to be available at the time originally scheduled. They accommodated by offering to make us the last stop. Perfect! They were on time and very helpful. Needless to say Dan went above and beyond what was expected. We found out that our previous AC guy had installed a motor that was too small for our unit making the AC work harder. He did provide a quote to replace which at the moment is to much for our budget. He gave us pointers of what to do to keep the motor from working to hard. And recommended we replace the motor ASAP. We appreciated his honesty and the fact that he was not trying to take advantage and sell us something that wasn't needed. He explained exactly what and why, which made sense. Great service with John, Mike, Manny, and others. However, I would strongly dissuade any prospective customer from using the Wells Fargo credit line to pay off any remaining balance with Hamstra. Below is my email to John Roelle explaining why: Dear John: I am following up on our phone conversation just now to document my concerns about Hamstra continuing to use Wells Fargo for customer lines of credit to pay off balances for equipment installations. You will remember that I had two HVAC units installed at our address beginning on August 19th. Thanks again for the excellent service and care. You will also remember that we requested to pay off the remaining half of the balance on our account over three years through the service offered by Hamstra through Wells Fargo Bank. Over the last few months, I have diligently made the necessary electronic payments of approximately $268 to Wells Fargo around the 13th of every month. You might imagine my surprise when I logged into my account this morning to find that Wells Fargo, with no email or mail notice, had moved my due date up to November 7th and had assessed me a $27 late fee. I called Wells Fargo to see what in the world was going on. The customer representative I spoke to said that my account involved revolving payments and that the due date would change based on when the previous payment had been made. When I told her (and her supervisor) that I had not received my November statement either by email or snail mail or even an alert that a payment was due, they had no explanations. Out of frustration and out of continued concern about rampant fraud and misrepresentation at Wells Fargo, I told the customer representative that I wished to pay off the remaining balance and to be relieved of doing further business with Wells Fargo Bank. That is exactly what I did-- I paid off the remaining balance of $9,151.61 You will remember that the CEO of Wells Fargo recently resigned after being publicly disgraced for the practices of thousands of employees who opened accounts at Wells Fargo without customer knowledge or authorization. I am writing to encourage Hamstra to cease extending its customers lines of credit through Wells Fargo due to the concerns that I (and others) have about Wells Fargo's business practices. Hamstra should consider doing this to safeguard its own reputation. Also, Wells Fargo does not allow recurring payments to be made from external bank accounts; to set up recurring payments you have to set up a Wells Fargo checking account. This is contrary to what every other credit card I have ever had allowed me to do. All of this, in my view, is devised to ensure that people will miss payments to generate late fees. super expensive. my coil needed to be replaced hamstra the part had to be made in mexico and would take 6 weeks or more. this on the first july, so can you image no cooling. four years later the coil put in by hamstra was leaking and had to be replaced called family air and they came right away. the new coil was delivered to family in about two days. it took the installer one morning to do the work. the cost for hamstra was 1290.00 in 2017 and the cost from family air in 2020 was 730.00 read more

I called one of the "bigger" competitors only to be put on a waiting list. Then I called two friends who both recommended Hamstra and they were there for me. Having purchased a house, I was having trouble finding the air filter on our AC unit. I asked to have someone from Hamstra come out to show me where the air filter was located since they did the original install on our house. It was jammed inside the actual Heater unit it turns out, but they insisted that they had to do a full "inspection" So yep, I'm a sucker and paid basically $100 for a new filter and to learn that the AC was functioning fine... After writing the review on 9/29/2015, "Jackie" from Hamstra Heating and Cooling contacted me. She apologized on behalf of the company and stated that they would refund the $681.00 I paid for the stock blower motor. She also stated that Hamstra takes customer concerns very seriously. UPDATE: After posting this review I received a phone call from Hamstra. They were very nice and like I said have excellent customer service. I was informed that the capacitor was not checked even though it is their protocol to do so. They informed me they are refunding my money and they hope I do not hold this oversight against them. I appreciated their honesty and they obviously do really care about their reputation! If they care this much about my business after refunding my money I would be willing to give them another chance. I had Hamstra come check out my system after I had another company out to fix it and had failed to do so twice. They inspected my ac which had been working intermittently for a couple of weeks and told me it was freezing up and there was nothing they could do. After 2 companies had failed to fix it, I decided to begin reading about ac systems myself and how I could stop it from freezing up which it had NEVER done before and now was supposedly happening every couple of hours... It wouldn't even get the house below 80 degrees. I woke up on Sunday morning to the ac blowing hot air again and a hot house and decided to get on the roof myself. I turned off all of the power at the circuit breakers and took the panels off my ac expecting to see frozen coils. If anything the system was extremely hot and there was not a "cool" part on it. After determining it was not freezing up, I figured out it was overheating because the exhaust fan was not blowing. I replaced the capacitor, a $15 part at Naughton's and within a few hours the temperature in the house was 74 degrees. It's been running normally for about a week now. Beware of this company! They offer great customer service and will surely take your money but they told me an outright lie (ac was very obviously not freezing up) and did absolutely nothing! read more

First class service and installation. We had to replace a 4 year old AC in a new house and it was July. They got here and gave us a estimate the same day we called. They even figured out why the old one broke so quickly. Funny because the company that put it in could find the problem (Chas Roberts). They got our new system ordered and installed in 3 days. They even brought out some portable units just to help get us by. If you need AC fixed or a new unit they are the only ones to call. read more

Just had Chris over for probably my 8th AC/Heater checkup. He is a total professional and has kept both my 13+ unit and my mom's 14 yo unit running great. I had no issues this year with either AC.
