Like other A/C companies I have called for emergency repairs in the summer time, they were not accepting new customers. Unlike other A/C companies, they were kind enough to refer me to another company who was and my A/C was repaired on a Saturday within an hour of calling. Initially had a bad experience... 3 visits in 3 months, lots of money spent, and nothing was fixed. It was the middle of summer and my air conditioner was on the fritz. After the 3rd unsuccessful trip to my home, I was able to speak with the service manager and one of the senior technicians at Hamstra. They did everything they could to make things right again. They were able to fix my air conditioning with no further issues, and sent an additional technician per my request to ensure the repair was done correctly. Mistakes happen, but when a company goes "above and beyond" the norm to make it right, they are definitely someone I can recommend. I recommend Hamstra. read more

"Big John" came around the old hacienda and gave a very informative, low-pressure sales pitch. No BS. No 'Glenngary Glen Ross' aka "you're the sucker" pitch. The quoted price was very fair in comparison to several competitive quotes. Also, the TEP rebate was honored and credited (as opposed to the "Intelligent" competition that claimed it was [sic] "too much of a hassle - the rules keep changing"). Steve (Lead Installer) and his team were prompt, courteous, clean, and got the job done in a shorter time than was originally quoted. Called for AC check since our AC wasn't cooling. Tech was clueless and couldn't find out what was wrong. He kept calling another tech for advice. He finally gave up and started to prepare our bill. Nothing was fixed! He checked the unit one more time at my husband's request and came back and said it was a bad compressor. We paid $129 for an incompetent repairman. The same day we called another company who sent out a very knowledgeable repairman. Don't use Hamstra! read more

Recently we had our a/c go out at 11pm during the night. We immediately called Hamstra's after hours emergency line, they stated someone would call us in the morning. At 8am we followed up with them, they stated they never received my call (even though I received a confirmation email) and now couldn't come out until the following day. We have a monthly package that we have paid into with Hamstra since 2018 that provides "next day service response". When mentioning this to them, they stated I would have had to call before 12pm. I did not come across such a rule in their terms and conditions sent to us when we signed up for this package. Today is an excessive heat warning and tomorrow we were scheduled to have an engagement party at this house with 20+ guests. I was very disappointed in their lack of accommodation and urgency to our situation, when we have been a customer since 2008 when they installed our a/c. From there, we called Goettle who was in route to our house within an hour of calling. I would hope in the future they would be able to provide better customer service to their clients of almost 15 years. read more

The heat function of my rooftop "gas pack" died. I called Hamstra at 7AM on a Monday. The technician (Matthew) arrived a couple of hours later. He diagnosed the problem (a burned out transformer), replaced the part and repaired a shorted wire that had caused the transformer to fail, and I soon had heat again. Matthew was competent, courteous and professional - he is a credit to the company. The service was prompt and the price was reasonable. I highly recommend Hamstra. read more

I have waited to post to just make sure I wasn't dreaming... In September, our main AC unit went out and we queried multiple local and franchise companies looking for the best quote and quality. It was a mess- quotes all over the place, even with completely different recommendations for units! I felt overwhelmed and confused, but we reached out to Hamstra and they were so helpful. Their technician, "Big John" came to our house and met with my husband and explained everything to him, even answering NUMEROUS follow up questions without any annoyance or delay. Once we opted to use them and replaced both units and the process continued to be easy. Their installers called us each time they arrived and left our property (since we were working). The job was done on time and you literally could not tell anyone had been to our home. Systems work perfectly and we did not feel we were upsold or sold products we didn't need. We weren't pressured to buy options "Now" to avoid higher rates later- in fact, it was opposite, we were encouraged to try out our new system and let them know if we needed anything more later (without increased prices). We are very happy so far and hope the AC debacle of 2019 will end up just being a funny story down the road! read more

The Lennox system Hamstra installed on our roof in 2009 had cost so much money--and when we received (from Hamstra, and then another company) an analysis that it needed a new coil (not under warrantee) to the tune of more than $4K, we replaced it. But not with a Lennox, and not with Hamstra. We replaced it with an American Standard, installed by a company that doesn't reward techs with commissions, but pays them a salary with benefits. read more

Renee & Mike Finney We had been with Hamstra for 8 yrs and have a Silver level maintenance deal which we pay $25 a month for. We recently had Hamstra service our HVAC in our now rental Home & they told the renters the system "was running rough". Excuse me? We pay you guys to service our system do if it's not working properly we would appreciate a call to tell us what is wrong not convey this to our tenants. And when we did call to inquire what was wrong we never got a straight answer from the technician. Also with the last service the technician noted to the renter that the filter needed to be replaced to which the renter said the would replace. Really? A filter is not part of the $25 monthly fee we pay? Our renter should not have to pay for parts. If you would have called us we would have gladly paid for it. Now we are being told we need a whole new HVAC system because the R22 Freon will become obsolete next year. This comes after we had to buy a new compressor 2 yrs ago which cost us $3500 to have Hamstra install. Researching how much a compressor cost with a technician installation it should have been no more than $1800. Why we were charged such a huge amount was explained that "we needed to flush the system out & replace the Freon". Now they want us to buy a whole new HVAC which 2 yrs ago the lowest estimate was $8500. So in essence we should spend $12,000 for a minimal system (5 ton 15 SEER) which they've stated would need a new compressor installed. Needless to say, we feel totally ripped off by Hamstra. Mr. and Mrs. Finney, We appreciate you sharing your feedback and apologize that you have been displeased with our company. We thank you for being a loyal Hamstra client over the past 8 years. We spoke in depth regarding this situation last week. As we discussed in our conversation, our company policy has always been to provide the homeowner with all necessary information about their systems, and not discuss any issues with the tenants. During our conversation on 1/31/19, we identified the service in question was the visit on 7/12/18. Given the date of service, we were unable to verify what was shared with the tenant at the time, but did discuss the importance of keeping all communication directly with the homeowner. During that visit, our technician identified that the system was 1.5 pounds low on refrigerant, condenser fan motor was running on high temperatures, had an out of tolerance capacitor, and recommended a leak search. He spoke with you over phone to offer multiple solutions to remedy the situation. Based on the age of the system (18 years), previous repair history, and the pending phase out of R-22 refrigerant, one option our technician recommended was pursuing full system replacement, rather than put money into repairs. This recommendation was declined, and you advised the technician to add refrigerant to keep the system working, as you intended to budget for future system replacement. Similarly, in 2016, you elected to pursue repairing the system, rather than opt for replacement. Our technician was on site on 8/16/2016, performed a diagnostic on your system, and found the compressor had locked. Based on the age of the system (16 years) and potential cost of repairs, he recommended that you consider system replacement, and scheduled a comfort specialist to provide you with an estimate. When given the options of $3500 repair, or $8500 system replacement, you elected to perform the repair. The repair was scheduled and completed the following day. As for the cost of repair, given the age of the system, the compressor was outside of the manufacturer's warranty. When replacing a locked compressor, it is also an industry wide standard to NOT reuse the old refrigerant due to contamination, as well as to replace the drier located on the refrigerant line. If the old refrigerant or drier are reused, it can lead to further damage to the system and prematurely cause the new compressor to fail. The cost of the compressor, new refrigerant, drier, run capacitor, labor, and a 1-year warranty were all included in the $3500 repair cost. We are a company that takes pride in providing complete solutions and making recommendations that are in the best long term interest of our clients and their systems. Multiple times our technicians made professional recommendations to pursue replacement, and they were declined. In regards to the dirty filter found during our visit on 2/5, we apologize that the technician did not contact you to alert you of the dirty filter. During previous visits, the technicians have replaced the filter with one provided onsite. We will address this personally with the technician. Filters have never been included with our maintenance due to the variety. Finney Response to Hamstra 2/8/2019: Having received other HVAC estimates this week (5 ton 14 SEER Goodman) unit for $6400 we will go with Sampson & Sons who are known for excellent service & customer satisfaction with LOW PRICES! read more

Our rental house cooler broke down. I called Hamstra to come take a look at it. They took my info Friday evening, and then asked if it was an emergency. I said no only because it's not THAT hot yet, and there is only one person currently staying in the house who said a fan has been OK. I wanted to avoid emergency costs. I hadn't heard anything back by mid morning Saturday, so called again. Once again, they took down my information, and this time I actually got an email saying they be reaching out to their service techs to then get back to me on a date and time. It's now 2 days later and no response from anyone. They were very polite on the phone, I'll give them that. However, I think if its "not an emergency " at least give me an idea of a timeline. Granted, its not a heat stroke situation, yet, but the house doesn't have any air. Luckily, it's been fairly cool. Maybe I should have said it's an emergency. We've since sorted this out with someone else. Curious when I'll actually hear back as Google shows me that Hamstra is closed today. Just disappointed. read more

I have a contract and my air conditioning died not long after they checked it. This is early July and and they can't make it out for a repair until Wednesday, this is Monday. That's just not good enough here in Southern Arizona, I've cancelled my expensive maintenance contract. High price and poor service not a great combination. read more

Unfortunately, their idea of full service is to clean out your a/c unit AND your wallet at the same time.

Our air conditioner died a week ago and we went through the process with our home warranty company to have it repaired. The warranty company for the most part did their part but the vendor that was dispatched did not come for two days after the claim was put in with the warranty company. The air-conditioning vendor confirmed what I already had confirmed, that my compressor was shorted to ground. They pulled the stunt that we will not be able to obtain a new compressor for a week plus but we can have you up and running with a new system in two days. Well I know that a 5 ton compressor exists somewhere in the southwest and can be expedited in so I took this as black mail. Our unit was 18 years old so after some soul searching I solicited bids from several companies and Hamstra gave me the best deal out of all. Mind you they were not the cheapest bid but all things factored in such as type of replacement units, they were the clear winner. They really bent over backwards to please us knowing our situation " no air" they even provided us with a loaner unit so my wife could work from her home office in some comfort. The installation was top notch and you can see the quality of workmanship. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade so I tend to over scrutinize other peoples work. They do good work. Bought an April 800 steam Humidifier from Hamstra and they also installed it last year 2016. Turned it on this year in December 2017 and noticed I couldn't get the humidity to the proper setting as last year. Called Hamstra this morning and they had a service technician here in a very short time to evaluate the problem and he is having the service technicians (engineer's) out to check and evaluate the system again, as he thinks it needs a re-look by the installers. Took his time (Dave T.) and was very professional with my wife and I. So glad I used Hamstra for this installation and service for our Heating/Aircon. unit. Thanks Hamstra. I made an appointment on the phone with the receptionist he sounded very nice but when he sent the appointment to my email he did not even set the appointment for the right day so I had to change my schedule. When the tech showed up he was trying to up sell and make stuff up, and was surprised when he noticed I could tell what he was doing. Hamstra recently sealed our ductwork (found huge leak that had cost us $$$ and fixed it), replaced HVAC (2 each) on our old home. Prompt, pleasant, professional and focused on giving the customer a great experience. And the new units and programmable thermostats are terrific -- we didn't know what these systems could do until now. We can't say enough about this group -- we strongly recommend them and would (will) go to them again when we need this kind of service. read more

We called someone out to service our noisy AC. Was told it was a motor, after several hours tech said it was not the motor, he put the old one back in (even though he said the noise was bc it was on its last legs). Then he said it was the wheel but he'd have to order it and quote me later. Fun part is that he said, everything works so if you can live with the noise nothing is broken right now. If I could live with it I wouldn't have called. Long story a little shorter...... was told I would be offered a "discount" for my troubles. Today Cummings is doing the same job for $120 less. Bummer is that I paid Hamstra $129 for a shotty diagnostic job and an overpriced quote. Lesson learned to never use them again! read more

We had previously had good experiences with Hamstra, including installation of our last system. We had them do preventative maintainance on both of our two units earlier this year, where they replaced two "failing" start capacitors. Approximately one month ago, we had them look at one of the units which stopped running, where they identified a 3rd broken start capacitor, and claimed the unit was low on refrigerant as well. The capacitor was not on their truck, so we later got an estimate for replacement, approx 400.00. As for the low refrigerant, we could not add any until they did a mandatory leak test, costing 200.00. We decided to get a second opinion. The capacitor was on his truck and replaced for 22.50. He then ran the system for a while and felt no refrigerant was needed. System ran ok for a few more weeks until it intermittently stopped cooling... My second guy returned and found that the drain was clogged, intermittently setting off the safety switch. He thought it unlikely that Hamstra had gone to the trouble of clearing out the drain when they had done the (expensive!) preventive maintenance earlier this year. I did not contact Hamstra but do not intend to continue or recommend them. read more

In retrospect, our involvement with Hamstra was a mistake. We started the search for a new AC and heating system mid-summer of 2017 thinking that the five ton twenty year old system which had just been refilled with about fifty percent of it's refrigerant needed to be replaced. Mind you, in the triple digit temperatures, it was cooling fine but we were concerned about it's reliability. I contacted one HVAC outfit after another finding out the range of prices and suggested equipment and finally settled on Hamstra after early on having called them for a bid. Their suggestion was to wait until November when the factory rebates and TEP rebates to return. This set the stage for my failure to remain as critical and demanding as I should have. The first thing we have to remember when dealing with HVAC issues is that there is a standard protocol for determining the capacity a home needs. That is called a Manual J calculation. Unfortunately I found out quickly that Tucson HVAC companies don't often use this process and rarely do it correctly. The first company I contracted sent out a salesperson who I told that I wanted a Manual J calculation done. They responded with a bid and after I demanded to see the Manual J, gave me one dated three days after their bid was completed. I then decided to hire an engineering firm to put one together for me. Mechanical engineering firms don't usually do residential work, but I got one to came out and prepared a Manual J for us. Emphasis on "came out" for an on-site visit. If the HVAC company doesn't measure glazing, inquire about skylights, orientation and shading of your home, additional insulation and the like, you won't get an accurate Manual J. I gave Hamstra a copy of the Manual J I had prepared. It called for a 2.55 ton unit. Not realizing that they didn't do their homework, I took their criticism of the KC Manual J as being accurate. Hamstra told me that the calculation had six inch walls instead of the existing four inch walls on the house and recommended a five ton AC unit. I should have immediately gone back to the engineer, but instead took Hamstra's talk about being thoroughly professional and ensuring that I got what I wanted. Their bid and work was a third more expensive then the highest previous bid for virtually identical equipment and more than double the least expensive bid. To be fair, Hamstra included a sealing of the ducts and some additional air circulation cutouts, and I simply wasn't convinced of the professionalism of the other companies. It took me a while, but buyers' remorse started to set in when after a month of waiting, Hamstra had to be called to remind them their work wasn't completed, who then installed 3" vents rather than the 4" vents promised with some jibe about "nominal sizing" and we started to realize that what we were told about the unit wasn't really what we were experiencing. Improvement but not as quoted. I also went back to engineering firm and had them redo the Manual J with four inch walls - turns out the difference was slight - requiring a 2.61 ton unit. One might ask "does it really matter if you get an oversized AC?" The answer is that an oversized unit will cool quickly, stop and wait, resulting in uneven cooling and is actually less efficient than a properly sized one. MY BAD, I simply gave them the benefit of the doubt after being through the wringer with the other companies lack of competence and professionalism. Purchasing an item this costly is stressful and I allowed myself to hope for the best rather being more critical. read more

Expensive, but very good. After my usual repairman didn't show up (should one even have a "usual" repairman?), I called Hamstra. They showed up the same day - right at their predicted arrival time - and diagnosed a bad capacitor. They charged $100 for the call and another $180 for the capacitor. Down side: Almost $300 for a $30-40 capacitor Up side: My unit was working perfectly the same day I called. read more

I've been working with these guys off and on over the last couple of years. Overall I'm fairly satisfied with them. The two different guys that came out were polite and professional and came out during the time frame they said they would. Their prices seem a bit on the high side. There was one time where they couldn't help me with something and I had to call someone else, but overall these guys have been fine. I would like to have a long term working relationship with them. I'll keep hiring them unless they give me a reason not to. read more

He was very professional and fixed our air conditioner but more importantly, he took the time to explain to me what the repair entailed but also why our unit was not running properly. After having several service calls on this unit in the past from other companies, Jose was the first technician to show me why our unit was not running efficiently and did his best to help fix the situation with the existing unit. Don't think I'd give them 5 stars. They were good when they were still Atlantis. We had a frustrating and expensive experience with Hamstra recently. Maintenance, that grew into a repair, which grew into a major (to us) expense. Missed appointments, unyielding to our complaints about billings and appointments. They had us over a time barrel at a rental unit, and suspect they really whomped us. Big bill - one-liner with virtually NO details - paid on site with Visa and then they re-billed us by snail mail, three weeks later. Uh..... Sorry folks, one bad experience. After getting a couple bids from other companies, it was apparent that Hamstra was the way to go considering the price, the system/services and the professional manner to which the bid from delivered including an easy to read format. Hamstra representative Wes Adams was extremely informative and assisted us with the selection of the correct system for our home. Furthermore, Wes was very patient with us and our busy schedule. All members of the Hamstra team we came in contact with or spoke to at their office were polite, helpful and friendly. The installation plan was concise and well planned. Both houses we have owned came with evaporative cooler systems. Hamstra has converted both to a/c for us. At our last house it was a gas pack. At this house it was a heat pump. Both times they had to install new ductwork. (All new ductwork in the first house since we opted to change from floor vents to wall vents, only small sections in the second house.) At the second house they coated the inside of the ducts to prevent air from leaking out of the ducts. Both times the crews have been timely and polite. They laid plastic on the floor to keep our floors from getting dirty (unnecessary in this house as we have tile, but the gesture was still appreciated.) At the current house I did not understand part of the install. I questioned it and the employee tried to explain. When I didn't understand, he halted that part of the job and referred me to the owner, Jeff. The employee was polite and did not get defensive or argue with me. He was very professional about my concern. When Jeff and I spoke he explained it in a way I could understand and I realized the employee was doing his job correctly. However, I really appreciated that he respected my concerns and did not push on against my doubts (even though he was right.) Naturally turning on the a/c in this house in August was amazing. Two days before we'd had evap, then we had a/c. (We also had a/c after they took out our cooler as they provided us with a room a/c during construction.) We don't plan on moving again. I am glad we had Hamstra install our a/c. We feel the conversion from swamp to a/c was well done and that it is a "good install." It's good feeling like the skeleton of our a/c is high quality. read more

Paid $274 for spring service. Had to call two months later for clogged drain. I was charged another $158. Do not trust them.

If I could give this place ZERO stars I would. Egregious customer service and atrocious pricing!! We had our two ACs serviced two months ago, one for routine services, other because it wasn't throwing out cool air. Paid close to four hundred dollars for routine service (diagnostics) and one pound of refrigerant that was needed for the AC that wasn't throwing out cool air. Low and behold TWO MONTHS later same thing is happening. Called Hamstra on Saturday (earliest they can come is Monday afternoon) which means two days without AC and another day I'd have to take time from work AND to top it off THEY WANT TO CHARGE US AGAIN FOR DIAGNOSTICS AS THERE MAY BE A LEAK! So we already PAID for said "diagnostics" was clearly misdiagnosed, a band aid (if you will) was put on the problem, and now they want us to pay AGAIN to send someone out to do something we ALREADY paid for!!! Which, by the way, the wonderful customer service woman said would cost 200-400 dollars to do, now that they have to look for a leak. Also when my fiancée was clearly upset talking to this wonderful woman, he heard other women from the office laughing in the background and he called her out and she nervously started giggling saying "ok sir" and so he just hung up like any person with dignity would do.
