This is my first time visit Hana Koa, they have a lot of beer choices. Let's talk about packing first, if you're facing the entrance of the restaurant, the parking is on your right side. There is a sign saying if the packing is full ask the host, I believe they will direct you to the parking in the back, which I never park there this time. They have eating area at the ground floor and the second floor. I did not visit the second floor, but from what I heard, it is a little bit more quiet at the second floor. The wait staffs are very friendly. They serve burgers, steaks, french fries, fish, onion ring, mac & cheese, shrimp dish, etc. It seems like a good place to hangout and have a drink. This brewery is one of the better options on Oahu, in my humble opinion. It's much more spacious and aesthetic than others, and their beers are awesome! [Ambiance] Truthfully, ambiance boosts the rating to a 5 star. The place is so nice! It makes you feel happy upon entrance. Everything is so clean and pleasing to the eye. Parking is great. More spots than expected. Free too! And close by. Restrooms are clean too. Plenty of places to sit. Great for a casual date or group hangout. [Food and Drink] All the pupus are good. Nothing is over the top impressive food-wise but I got to brewery for the brew more than anything. All the brews I've tried have been great. The servers are very helpful for those indecisive like me. Sounds like the brewery has a good story, a good set of employees that run it and I recommend it. The best of both worlds which is very rare in Hawaii. There are a lot of brewing houses that have great beer but terrible food or on the flipside there's a lot of places with great food but run-of-the-mill beers. This place is the perfect marriage of the two. I would like to give extra stars for the fact that they choose not to only offer milkshakes, sours, and light flavorless beers. They have a few heavier stouts and some great west coast IPAs. I was very impressed by the selection. Something for everyone . We got the prime rib sand, Kim chee saimin noodles, brisket sand, and the shrimp poppers and they were all made fresh and the flavors were great. Also our server was the bomb and he only works there on Sundays but man he made our experience what it was. He had good suggestions of beers and the foods. He also came to check on us but wasn't too pushy or bothersome. Perfect. The parking can be a problem because the street parking is very limited but if you can find one it is well worth your time and efforts. First time here and it's pretty cool. Wanted a burger and this place came recommended so here I am. Greeted an seated right away which was great. Place is very spacious and they brew on site. In back they also have a gift shop with merch. Looked over the menu and they had a great selection of food offerings. Decided on the Teri burger with fries. Food came out fairly quickly. Burger was a good size and it was slathered with this rich looking sauce. Bun was brioche and very soft. Fries were crispy and were served with some kind of sauce. I would've preferred basic ketchup as the sauce served was not tasty to me and seemed a bit salty. The burger had too much sauce literally had to eat it with a knife and fork. The sauce itself was salty and with so much on it not good. I found it strange they did not mention about how the burger was done so I assumed it would be served like medium or medium well. Wrong, the burger had nice char on outside and you could taste the char but the burger was raw :0(. Showed the server the rawness of the burger and she took it back to the kitchen. All in all that burger was a fail. I'll never order that again! The 3 stars was for the service. She was helpful and friendly. I really liked the vibe of the place and would check it out again. Nice industrial looking bar with a decent beer collection in the transformative part of kaka'ako with its own parking lot. The service was friendly and attentive. The pastrami sandwich and fries were pretty good. They have a wall with the all the beers on tap and they run out they erase the name. By 3 pm on a Saturday they were starting to run out of the popular beers on tap. The old fashioned was okay, a bit on the sweet side. Came here at 8:45pm on a Tuesday. The inside does not reflect what it looks like on the outside--there's so much space and there's a cute industrial feel to it like many breweries have. Parking looks a bit tight/sketchy but we parked right outside the store since it was a weekday night. We saw some recent bad reviews before coming, and I understand what it's like to have a unsatisfactory experience at a restaurant, but it seems like the reviews were completely made up. A cockroach? In this place? It was so clean and the chairs were built in a way where they can't easily climb them. We also cracked up at the review that criticized the brewery for excluding non-LGBTQ people. We were glad to be seated and were told it was last call, so we just got some toast, fries, and spicy pickles. The toast was tasty. It looks like an elevated tuna salad on toast. I really enjoyed the smokey, meaty feel to it. The fries had a sweet dipping sauce, and you can ask for ketchup. I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce but the fries had a perfect texture, crispy all over. The spicy pickles were overpriced for what they were; nevertheless they were good for pickle enthusiasts like us. It wasn't spicy though, just sharply sour with a tiny kick. The beers and cocktail menu was extensive! There were so many interesting fruit flavors which were additionally drawn out on the chalk wall. We got a ton of fruity ones. Sini Gang Gang - Couldn't taste the tamarind much although it's still there. Lime in the Coconut - Tart, lime-y beer with slight coconut aftertaste. Dream Machine Mango - Vanilla-y mango beer, like an elevated version of Mango Cart. Pina Hoplada - Pineapple-y with coconut hint/aftertaste. Puka Shell Tour Guide - Thick smoothie IPA with lilikoi and guava, nice and tart. Lilikoi Mule - We couldn't taste the lilikoi syrup, and usually lilikoi is a super fragrant flavor that makes its presence known. A bit disappointing. Dole Whip Mimosa - Refreshing, fruity drink! We mixed the cream to make a pineapple creamsicle of sorts. Tickle Me Pink - My friends didn't like this drink because it was spiced but I personally enjoyed it. It's good especially if you don't like sweet drinks. Stoke in the Kettle - It's supposed to be reminiscent of a campfire and I agree. It's smokey and coffee-like. Hana Koa Brewing is located on a back street in the Ward area. We drove around to find street parking but was unsuccessful. Luckily my friend works around the area and parked at work then we walked over. The place is larger than I expected and they even have a second floor. It's clean, bright and modern. When we arrived, the place was pretty packed but we got lucky with 2 bar seats. I'm not the biggest beer drinker but my friends are trying to get me to appreciate beer more. I thought the beer wasn't bad here but our first stop had better beer IMO. The food here was better than our first stop though. Since we were still hungry, we ordered some food. My friend got the Mando Mac and Roasted Eggplant Bruschetta. I ordered their Farmhouse Burger (monthly special). My friend did give me a tasting of his Mando Mac and I was quite disappointed. Although it was somewhat creamy, it lacked flavor. The Roasted Eggplant Bruschetta wasn't half bad and I enjoyed it. My burger came out perfectly cooked and it was my favorite of the 3 food dishes we had. Customer service was just ok and nothing special. Terrific watering hole, great beers paired with great 80s music. The food is good too, but there were a few misses in my opinion. But first, to get here they are located in the backside of the popular Ward area. There are a couple more breweries nearby, so if you wanted to do a beer crawl, it's definitely possible. Parking here is the lot to the right if you are facing brewery, the one with the mural in the background. Once you go in, you are greeted by a host. There's tables for larger parties, smaller parties, and the long bar area with a TV. The focal point is their large ever changing beer board smack dab in the middle. Bathroom is in towards the back and the brew area is behind the bar. Everything here is clean and the place doesn't smell like worts that have been sitting out. The beer is terrific, their snoop POG is like sipping on juice, not too sweet not too sour. Just right. We went last Friday and it was their first day premiering the Lion Coffee Stout collab. (Rise with the Sun). Did wish they would barrel age this beer tho, I'm sure it would be fantabulous! As for the food, definitely love the asian choices. I do have to say, the portions are small. We added a side of onion rings and it was literally 4 onion rings for $5 and they weren't big nor crispy. Their brisket cubano was okay, and I thought it shouldn't be called a cubano because the bread just wasn't correct with the sourdough. The mando mac and the tonkotsu ramen were a nice touch. Good broth for the ramen and the mac is not overly cheesy. I would say these were the better dishes in order, but not by much. Very classic interpretations for both dishes but then again, portions were a tad small. I do want to try their cocktails here the next time I'm in town. We came here for a work happy hour with a large group, and the space was great for accommodating us. There was plenty of room and decent parking, which can be rare in this area. The food was solid (I especially enjoyed the fried noodles), and the drinks were well-made. Unfortunately, the service put a damper on the evening. From the start, it felt like we were an inconvenience. Basic requests like silverware, plates, or even water were met with a bit of reluctance. The table setup--a large square made from four tables with about 20 people around it--wasn't ideal for service, but it felt like we were being blamed for it. What really soured the experience was being repeatedly told we needed to leave soon, despite there being open tables and no clear time limit that we saw. We were still ordering food and drinks, so it was confusing and disappointing to feel like we were being rushed out. One of my coworkers even received their water in a to-go cup without asking for it, which really made it feel like we were being pushed out the door. Some folks still wanted to hang out after, and even considered staying. However, we all agreed that it was hard to justify sticking around somewhere we didn't feel welcome. I like the ambiance of this place. Walking in to a big open area with lots of tables. Was also told they have an upstairs but I didn't get to see it. We ordered a couple flights of beer and some food. I really enjoyed the prime rib sandwich. The bread was nice and chewy and it was loaded with thinly sliced prime rib topped with red onions, creamy horseradish, and cheese. We ordered onion rings which was light and crispy and went well with the sandwich. Now to the beers. My wife loved the Strawberry Mochi Daze. It was a nice beer with subtle hints of strawberry. My preferred beer was the La Hacienda, a darker lager with a spicy background. I hope they come out with a oat stout one day... Will definitely come back to this place and try more beer. read more

Very nice brewery and restaurant in Kakaako! This is a hidden gem (literally) located inside what appears to be a warehouse. The warehouse has been fully renovated and reconstructed into a pretty fancy bar and restaurant, completely with a full bars both upstairs and downstairs. Starting with the food, it's really good. The beers are also good, with a nice variety of dark and light variants. The mixed drinks (for you non-beer drinkers) are creative and delicious. I suggest the "surprise me" cocktail, that is made specially for you based on your personal preferences. The atmosphere is awesome. Upbeat and cool both, my favorite is sitting upstairs by the window. This allows you to see the downstairs dining and bar area while having drinks and dinner. Love this place. After a couple of visits, I have nothing but praise, zero complaints. It's great not only for folks who like beer, but also folks who like cocktails and tasty food. I myself am partial to cocktails; if you are too, then do ask to sit in the mezzanine (upstairs level), so you can order from the "Secret Menu." My favorite drink is the No Phony, which is on the Secret Menu, although I have also tried the Lilikoi Mule and Dole Whip Mimosa from the regular menu which were also very good. The food also tastes amazing. I would recommend everything I've tried so far which includes the panko popcorn shrimp and picked onion rings (regular menu appetizers), Korean style BBQ boneless short ribs (regular menu, comes with rice and kimchee or bokchoy), panko breaded fried pork chops (Saturday special, comes with garlic mashed potatoes), Texas-style smoked brisket (Friday dinner special, comes with mashed potatoes and BBQ sauce), and bread pudding. Add the scoop of ice cream to the bread pudding; it's worth it! Tables are nicely spaced out and there's plenty of seating overall. Great options for couples all the way up to larger groups. The biggest area is on the ground floor, but there is also the mezzanine and bar seating on both levels. I'd recommend making a reservation, although I appreciate that they appear to let folks who'd like to wait for a table to get drinks from the bar and wait in a seating area just inside the entrance. Parking is plentiful considering the area. They have their own lot which fills up quickly, but there's also a good amount of marked street parking. Impressive. That was the first word that came to mind when I stepped into this brew pub in Kaka'ako which opened right before the pandemic in Nov. 2019. Thankfully they survived! It's a former warehouse that has been transformed into the most beautiful space. It has a modern vibe, with gorgeous lighting, tall belly tables and regular tables spread throughout and a pretty staircase leading up to the 2nd floor. They also have a long bar that you can saddle up to and watch the tube. They even have their own parking lot with limited spaces, which is rare in that part of town. I happened to arrive right when they opened for lunch, and was seated on the main floor in front of the chalkboard beer menu. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of beers being offered, not to mention the creativity of some of the flavor profiles! I started with a few beer tasters. I like my beers dark, so I selected Janet's Brown (American Brown Ale), Milk & Cookies (Milk Stout with Hanakoa Cocoa Nibs) and Espresso Your Inner Bean (Imperial Stout with Coffee). All of the beers were fantastic and tasty! They have a varied food menu, but I opted for the House Burger for $14 and crispy fries for $6. It's a chuck/short rib/brisket patty with house spiced pickles, red onion, white cheddar and mayo on a toasted brioche bun. I found it odd that they charge $2 more for lettuce and tomato, which I opted not to add. It certainly wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it went well with the beers. What I love most about this brew pub (in addition to their beers) is their mission. They're all about giving back to the community by partnering with many non-profits and spreading the aloha. I used to actually work for the owner's father some 30 years ago, and his father's company was the same way. Best company I ever worked for and nice to see his son following his lead. We were not really impressed with the breweries in Hawaii.. that is, until we stepped foot into Hana Koa. This upscale brewery highly encourages reservations online. The reservation system online is super easy and theres an option for mezzanine seating which is 21+ and has a better selection of cocktails. The interior space is huge, trendy, and very much like a fine dining restaurant. They serve drinks in really cute tiki cups that I really wish they had available for purchase. They do offer a decent amount of merchandise located near the restrooms. Small sizes are very limited though. They had mostly XL or XXL when we visited. Food wise, everything we ordered was SOLID and unique. +The marlin toast was fabulous. Crunchy baguette topped off with creamy buttery marlin. The hint of paprika was perfection. +The onion rings were so unique, I've never had anything like it before. The onions are pickled so the flavor profile is so much more complex than your average onion ring. I love that sweet tangy combo plus they came out incredibly crispy. Service was great. Our server was personable and efficient (he also doubled as the bartender, which was great!) I would definitely come back here next time I visit Hawaii. read more

Hana Koa has been throwing it down since they first opened. They've become one of our go-to spots for our circles of friends. You can find them in Kaka'ako with a beautifully designed restaurant. Can I also say how cool their logo is?! Their location is absolutely beautiful. They have an open-concept type of venue with ingenious decor that leaves you impressed, but is not visually overwhelming. You can catch views of their fermentation vessels beautifully staged behind their bar-area. They also have a second floor that is 1/4 the size of their first floor with a seating area and bar-area. It's a little loud, but I assume because they lack sound-cancelling additions. For their beer - you'll never go wrong with a flight of any of their beers. The best part is you can find a short description on the QR code menu (website) to find out more about the drink. My favorite of the night was their Citra Exploder. The color was a clear yellow, but the flavor and aroma was amazing. Second on the list was their Hazy IPA Rad Sauce. I also tried their Party Boy, which is a customer favorite, however I wasn't a big fan of it. For food - we shared fries which were okay. There was nothing special about them. As my main entree I ordered their House Burger (I thought it was Friday and tried to order their Paniolo Burger). I got it with a side of pickled onion rings and they were so 'ono! The burger was ordered medium upon the servers recommendation and it was perfect. I couldn't believe how flavorful and juicy the patty was. Also can't forget how good brioche buns taste with burgers. As for the onion rings - by far the best onion rings I've EVER had. You'll definitely won't recommend coming to eat here. Just make sure you try at least 3 beers. read more

I met a friend here for lunch and found parking in their ~15 space lot next door at no cost. I got the last space otherwise I don't know where I would've gone. We sat at the bar to watch the football game while having a beer and food. I tried the Milk and Cookies beer after researching it on their site prior to arrival. It intrigued me but wasn't all that I had expected it to be. I also tried the How to Make Friends beer after suggestion by the bartender and it was pretty good. I ordered the House Burger with onion rings and was in love with the burger. I would definitely return just to have the burger. It was flavored, tasty, and on a soft bun that melts in your mouth. You can't go wrong with this burger. The onion rings didn't wow me as much and I might go for the fries next time. The onion rings look good but seemed greasy. It's an interesting restaurant with a lot going on. Several beers on tap, an upstairs area for overflow and parties, and gift shop with cool things to look at. I thought about buying my kids in the mainland a glass but it didn't say Honolulu, HI on it so I passed. The restaurant started to fill with people and groups as the afternoon went on so it's a popular place. I enjoyed the lunch and would definitely return for the burger. read more

This brewery is a Honolulu gem -- an airy interior with modern vibes, a innovative food menu with Asian inspired bites, and a decent beer menu with something for everyone. I'd recommend the White Strat and the Surf Pup - both excellent brews. Beers seemed to be priced a little high, but still worth it for a lovely experience! read more

For every thirst, a beer." - Irish Toast We moved into and lived in the Kaka'ako neighborhood about four years ago and have been happy to find at least six breweries or brewpubs within walking distance of our home. Kaka'ako's high walking score and various breweries and brewpubs remind us of Portland's Pearl District. Last year, the Hana Koa Brewing Co. opened in Kaka'ako, making it the seventh brewery in our neighborhood. Several of my fellow Yelp friends have written glowing reviews that made me bookmark this brewpub even though I had noticed this business whenever I'd stop in to get Japanese rice from the rice factory across the street. I made reservations through OpenTable.com for my husband and me this past Thursday after hearing about their limited release of a Hazy IPA in collaboration with METAvivor, a non-profit providing 100% donations to metastatic breast cancer research and support for Breast Cancer Awareness month. We considered walking to the brewery since it's less than a mile round-trip for us, but it was a hot and sunny day, so I convinced my husband to drive over. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation and found their parking lot full. I popped out of my car to inquire with Hana Koa's hostess for directions to additional parking. She said that we could park for free anywhere on Kawaiaha'o Street within the yellow-marked stalls. Fortunately, when I returned to our vehicle to inform my husband about the additional parking, a customer left the parking lot, so he swooped in. Immediately upon entry, we were greeted by the hostess, who asked us for our proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test and photo ID. We're used to presenting these documents to dine-in at our local restaurants, gyms, theaters, airports, and airlines. After presenting our proof of vaccination and ID and completing the contact tracing form, the hostess immediately seated us with a couple of menus. While perusing the menus, our server, Tigger, came by with her upbeat personality. She described the food special of the day and the Hazy IPA for METAvivor and Breast Cancer Awareness. Her mouthwatering descriptions of her favorites set our appetites in motion. Their beer menu offers 18 house brews and two brews from a "Guest Brewery" on tap. The beverage menu also shows cocktails, wines, and non-alcoholic selections to choose from. My husband was mentally debating between the blonde ale or Tokyo-style Pilsner, but I knew right away that I was getting Hana Koa's German-style Hammershlager. Knowing my husband's palate, I convinced him to go with the clean and crisp Breaktime Blonde (blonde ale). After a couple of sips of the blonde ale, he was delighted with the recommendation. FOOD: -The House Burger: under the brioche "hood" is a perfectly grilled half-pound (?) tender and flavorful chuck/short rib/brisket patty. The patty is topped with house spiced pickles, red onions, white cheddar, and mayonnaise. Tigger expounded The House Burger as ONE OF THE BEST burgers. My husband usually removes or asks to have the pickles on the side, but this time, he chomped into the burger and exclaimed how the spicy pickles enhanced the flavors. Duh?! LOL. Also, for an additional $3, he added on a half side of Crispy Fries, which he gobbled up and considered ordering more. -Brisket Cubano: Hana Koa tweaked the Cubano to replace the traditional Cuban roast pork with braised beef brisket in Breaktime Blonde. The luscious brisket elevated the sandwich with traditional ham, Swiss cheese, house spiced pickles, and mustard in a pressed sourdough roll. I thought there could have been more of the brisket in the sandwich, but it turned out the portion had a perfect balance of flavors. The pressed sourdough was a more manageable bite than if the bread had been served in its loaf form. I requested a half-side of Pickled Onion Rings with spicy BBQ sauce for an additional $4. I, too, wished that I had just ordered a complete side of Pickled Onion Rings instead of the add-on. The blonde ale batter on the pickled onion rings was so light, crisp, and airy. I had my eyes on dessert, but I was too full from my beer and sandwich. We're already making plans to return for more and want to make up for not coming here sooner. read more

We ate here before a show at the Blaisdale. The food was good and service was fast. The food came out maybe 10 minutes after we ordered. They have an awesome selection of beer on tap as well as well drinks and ciders. The atmosphere on Friday was cool. There were a lot of different people from locals to tourists hanging out and socializing. I would def recommend anyone in town checking them out. read more
