The ambiance here is really wonderful with breezy outdoor seating covered by screens. There isn't much protection for rain unfortunately. Very popular spot and we had to wait a bit to be seated. Our server was extremely nice. Food selection was actually very minimal with only 3 sandwiches. The burger variety was pretty decent. The burger itself was very average with a well done patty because it was so thin. It comes with a selection of sides, but none of them are fries! We selected the chips. We have always enjoyed Kona Brewing at the original Kona location and in Hawaii Kai. The food is solid as are the beers. If it wasn't for the rude hostess to whom we were very pleasant it would have been great! As we waited the 30 min for our table, we watched her be outright rude to every....single... person, both local and visitor. That is not how anyone deserves to be treated nor how anyone should act toward another. She was the actual epitome of who not to have as the front person. Four of us stopped in for lunch. It was the first time we've been there. Everything on Oahu is open air and Kona brewing Company is no exception, the ambience was lovely. We sat out overlooking the water. They had a wide variety of Kona beers. The food was delicious. Our friend had the jalapeño popper pizza. It was delicious. The wife and I split the fish tacos. they were also very good and our other friend had the Aji tuna salad. It was huge. The service was top-notch however, we did have to wait for about 15 minutes for a table, but it was well worth it, if we're ever in Oahu again will definitely go back. read more

I ordered all the Back Yard Batch, which are single batch beers.  I specifically ordered these because Kona Brewing has a great commercial presence all over the US and these are some I have never had, nor are they available outside of Kona. THE BEER: SLAM Dunkelweizen 4.7% ABV... OMG... so crushable. This is an all day easy drinking beer. Banana, check, clove, check, lite lemon, check, delicious, check, check. Steam Vent Lager 5.7% ABV... this is an easy drinking Lager, slightly hoppy Dad Joke IPA 6.3% ABV... a little grapefruity, West coast kinda, but there is some sweetness Lil Bae Bae IPA 5.3% ABV... Lil Bae Bae has a bite.  Mellows out after the first sip. Bay Runner Imperial IPA 10.4% ABV... fruity, slightly hoppy, but not overpowering Lea, our bar keep was awesome! There is food here, fresh baked pizza and sandwiches. There are geckos on the bar, on the floor and all through the brewery.  The staff I was told, call themselves geckos. If you like good craft beer, this is a great place to visit while in Kona. read more

On my first mainland trip in a very long time, I started my vacation with a pre-flight beer at Kona Brewing's bar in the new terminal. It sits near the entrance from security, you can't miss it. The bar area has dedicated tables in ropes, all alcohol has to stay inside. They offer four Kona Brewing drafts as well as hard liquor and mixed drinks. Of course prices are high- this is in the airport. My draft beer was $12.55, but it thankfully did come in a large cup and was filled almost to the top. They use plastic here, most likely due to the small footprint with having to wash glassware. The bartender Tony was friendly and personable, quick to serve both inside the bar and out at the tables. Discussion with travelers was lively - this is a fun place to wait. read more

After seven days on the islands and drinking my weight in mai tais we found this little oasis. The bartender was cool and relaxed. Enforcing the people limit gor his area. Honolulu had very strict covid card enforcement and masks. The bartender had made a vodka concoction of his own with passion, orange, cranberry and a couple others. He made this up for a change up. While I like going there to meet friends, I had an interesting experience. We asked for the bill (sat at the bar) and my husband closed it out. After a few minutes the bartender came up to me and asked if the service was alright or if anything was wrong. I said no, it was fine. She then said "oh because your husband only tipped 16%." I was shocked. Twenty percent should not be expected. I polled all my friends and they were in disbelief. So we gave her $20 and when he ordered another round he gave her 100% tip. I wouldn't have given a single star for this one, but the app requires a rate. As a "regular" at this restaurant, eating two and sometimes four meals per week, my recent dinner was not the great experience I am accustomed to. The servers are excellent, they always take a few minutes to chat, they know us on a first name basis, they know our usual meal items, they know our favorite beers. I would consider this to be ohana. Too many changes took place overnight. The large caeser salad that used to feed four to five people at the $20 dollar price is barely a two-person portion, yet the price remained the same. The salad had no dressing, had very little Parmesan cheese, and the goofy looking bowl it came in was ridiculous. The pizza size decreased and the price increased, with only four pizzas on the menu now. Thankfully the poke didn't change except for a price increase. The quality and quantity of food is not what it used to be. One more thing-the TV placement in the bar is terrible, the fan is blocking the view, the blades cause a flashing effect. Kona Brewery is now not a favorite of mine, all these changes are not for the betterment of the locals, the kama'aina. read more

I decided to dine in for lunch to try the Hawaii Kai Pub menu since I was here. Lunch just opened at 11am, so it wasn't too busy when I stopped by. On the menu: Paniolo Burger Cheddar, bacon, and onion rings with black sand bbq sauce Pele's Throne Ahi Salad Mixed greens tossed in soy-lime vinaigrette, topped with grape tomatoes, avocado, cucumbers, mango-pineapple salasa, fried wontons, and blackened ahi. The Paniolo Burger was good and had a nice size hamburger patty. The Pele's Throne Ahi Salad was also good and ahi was fresh. Although salad was tossed, I felt it needed a little more dressing. My bar tender was wonderful. She was super friendly, attentive, personable, and brought some fragrant pikake flowers for the bar. I have been a long standing customer of Kona Brewing Company, the changes that the new Vp and President have implemented are idiotic and could possibly lead to Kona Brewing closing its doors due to mismanagement and loss of clientele. Kona Brew has over the years been neglecting the local community, which is the BACKBONE of any company. Now Kona Brew is removing beers from the menu and charging more for food than almost everywhere in Kailua Kona (they are trying to charge luxury hotel prices at a pub). On top of that Upper management is so disconnected from their workers that they implement policies that end up hurting the servers, such as making the inside seating reserved for the Host, and removing popular beers such as coco brown and the hula Hefeweizen to name just a few. I do not want Kona Brew to close, but at the rate it is going it will be inevitable. Change is hard but made much harder with incompetent upper management.
