Hole in the wall convenience store with Big Breakfast for $6.59 in Honolulu, Hawaii... I saw my friends (Ward, Dan, Fran, and Donna) post photos of yummy food, but maybe I waited too long to check out Hana Market. I parked in the free parking lot for McCully Buffet and walked around the corner to the store. I didn't see any bentos... I just ordered a Big Breakfast with 2 of the 4 meats. I chose bacon and Portuguese sausage. I guess the eggs just come over easy and on a bed of white rice. I also ordered a tofu spinach salad. When I got home, I put the spinach in a bowl and uncovered the tofu. I dipped a spinach leaf into the sauce, which was too spicy for me. I'll take it to my mom's house later. I didn't see any menu for this shop. I believe that the picture menu refers to Choi's Garden. The phone number is on the poster. Catering is available. The shop looks a bit cluttered and not very organized. Toothpaste is next to canned goods, for example. The door is left open for fresh air. The owner/cashier/cook is an older Asian woman. She is a hard worker and didn't get flustered when another customer came in. I told her she can take care of the other person first - since she was waiting while my meal was being prepped. A little grocery store in McCully that seems to sell just about everything, liquor, cigarettes, and in case you need that one ingredient or item that you need that you don't have, you probably will be able to find it here. When you enter this mini mart, there's a small kitchen on the right. You cant find any menu of what is sold here other than what is displayed on the window outside the store. Hidden somewhere near the utensils you will find printed menus that is labeled "Choi's family" which had previously been on King street and closed down. The owner is a petite older Asian lady who seems nice and does all the cooking. I ordered the famous Kal bi plate, its thick cut, was very tender and I would have wanted it a little more seasoned or marinated, but it was good. And expensive. False advertising, unsanitary, and extremely rude. Across many years, unfortunately this inspired my 1st ever Yelp review as I feel others should know. Most the 4-5 star reviews are from over 5yrs ago so not sure what happened. An older woman was the only one there and did not wash her hands when going between cashier and cooking (ie grabbing bacon with her bare hands). When she rang me up for a 'Big Breakfast Plate' advertised as $5.99 on the roadside sign (which is a very good price and the reason why I stopped), I thought she said $10.32. I very nicely said, "Oh, I thought it was $5.99?" She then scoffed, waved her arms at me, muttered something that I now realize was telling me to leave and walked back toward the kitchen. I mentioned and pointed to the sign and she pointed to another sign in the store that said $6.99. That is when I realized she must have said $7.32. I explained I misheard her and did not see the other sign with the higher price, apologized and said I can do that no problem. She still barked at me to leave for 'complaining', despite having already cooked the food. She also did not come out or acknowledge me when I first entered the store for quite awhile. Ditto with another customer. Grouchy and rude all throughout. read more

I came by a few times and selected from their pre-made bentos when I was in a rush. Otherwise she had many breakfast or Korean food bento to choose from which was made to order! So fresh and delicious! Best to call in your order so the wait time wouldn't be as long. Last time she let me pick up some sorbet from Scoop Scoops around the block while I wait for my order. She is always positive and giving. So fortunate to thank her on this Thank you Thursday! They work hard & long hours and I'm sure they have many repeat customers! I drive on McCully Street all the time and always pass Hana Market. I saw a poster with menu items, so I searched Yelp and saw the menu and a few food pictures. ( Thank goodness for Yelp!) Hana Market is a very small mom & pop shop, don't let the clutter and mess keep you away from this store, this shop is very convenient for grabbing your essentials, of drinks, snacks, food, lighters, small amount of groceries and toiletries items, but they do carry good amount of alcohol and cigarettes. I read that recently they have a working commercial kitchen with the green pass sign, up and running. Hana Market is at the front of McCully Street, after you make a right on King Street, limited parking in the back, they share the same lot as Camelia Buffet. I stopped at Hana Market on 2 Sundays, when I don't feel like cooking breakfast for my other half. ( I need to feed him before he goes off to work) On both Sundays, I ordered the 4.50 breakfast plate which comes with 2 eggs, rice, spam, link sausage, bacon, & portuguese sausage. This is a good deal, saves me from cooking breakfast. I also grabbed a few musubi for 1.45 the spam is cooked well and rice is mixed with furikake, it is good but I was missing and wanted teriyaki sauce on the spam.There were a few breakfast and lunch bentos, starting from 3.99 on the counter. There are other items on the list, like kim chee fried rice, chicken katsu, fish katsu, meat jun, garlic chicken, beef with vegtables, Loco Moco, & Fried noodles. They even have hot dog with burrito or beef. Next time, I will order the other items on the menu. Note. They do accept credit cards with minimum 10.00 purchase. Sometimes it takes someone from outside to point out something great in your neighborhood. Yeeps Judy C & Donna O have recently reviewed Hana Market on McCully St. I'm always on the lookout for another neighborhood joint with good local comfort food, so I bookmarked it on the TDL to check out. Their directions were spot on. Hana Market is in the same building complex as Camelia Buffet and one of the dive shops I use. Park in their lot that butts against McCully and Algaroba. Their entrance fronts McCully, the sign is small and nondescript. I had to look for it. Hana is the type of neighborhood convenience store that sells smokes, liquor, canned/bottled drinks, sundry items, and in this case ono food. A one woman operation, the owner does everything- takes the order, cooks, and handles the payment. Somehow she makes everything works and your wait isn't too long. The menu is Korean-oriented, but includes local items like loco moco, fried noodles, corned beef and cabbage, and chili rice with hotdog. In the morning there are bento meals to grab and go. Her "Big Breakfast" of two meats, eggs, and rice for $4.99 is available all day. I wanted a couple of small proteins to go with some of the leftovers I was eating through, so I made an order for fried mandoo and spicy fried chicken. After a bit of a wait, my order was ready. She mostly takes cash, but will process a credit card for a transaction over $10. When I got home, I found something was lost in translation- instead of spicy fried chicken, I got a spicy chicken bento. It still worked and I enjoyed the meal, but now I know to check my order before I leave. I'm pretty stoked to have another neighborhood place within walking distance or on the way to/from home that serves good grinds. Can't wait until I try one of the Big Breakfasts! Until I get more accustomed to the waiting time I think I'll venture to Hana Market when I'm not in a rush, and not say on the way to work. Lunch/Dinner and weekends no problems! I had heard about this little mom & pops convenience store, located in the heart of McCully near the intersection of S. King and McCully Streets, and finally had the opportunity to try it. Offerings include usual fare of mostly Korean dishes, such as Bibimbap, Kal Bi, and Meat Jun. But for those who'd rather have something else, there are great selections like Corned Beef with Cabbage, Chili, and Loco Moco. And, I didn't notice any of them being over 10 bucks! In fact, the plate lunches range from just $6.99 to $8.99, and portions are very generous. What a deal! My husband loves their mac salad, he said he's never had one like it packed with onions. Food compliments just don't flow from his lips often, so it must've been really delish! Early risers can enjoy their breakfast deal, just $4.99 for 2 eggs, rice, and a choice of meat (SPAM, bacon, or link or Portuguese sausage). Lighter fare includes a variety of salads and sandwiches. There are also many snacks in the store, including a full range of Hawaiian Frost frozen confections. The proprietors, a husband and wife and their two adorable pups, were very friendly and attentive. And, might I say, the food was very yummy! Hubby had the chicken katsu, light and crispy on the outside and none of that nasty fat or excess chicken skin, and I had the kimchee fried rice topped with not just one, but two over-easy eggs. Three words: Broke. Da. Mouth. The hours posted on Google are 7a - midnight, and there's free parking just past the store in the shared lot. The first three stalls are marked Hana Market. There's also some metered street parking on South King Street. As I type this review, I'm already thinking about trying the Garlic Chicken, which the owner highly recommended. There are ton of liquor stores and I assumed this was just another one. I felt like something different for Mama Woo's so I decided to give Hana Market a try. They have been serving bentos for a while and I hadn't tired it yet. I was a little disappointed because the two chihuahuas who stand guard at the entrance weren't there today. They are friendly but are always checking you out when you walk down McCully street. It was made up for by the friendly lady at the counter. I was greatly with more warmth and enthusiasm than I'm accustomed to at a liquor store. Getting back to the food, I ordered the garlic chicken, kim chee & spam fried rice, meat jun, and bi bim bap. The garlic chicken and meat jun came with mac salad. This is the first mac salad I think is worth mentioning. The added tuna to it an it made all the difference. A small change can make a big difference. Garlic chicken - Fantastic! Along with the chick were green and wax beans. Not what I was expecting but it worked. Also the garlic came in whole cloves that we cooked until soft. This isn't for everyone but I loved it. Meat Jun - Yummy Korean is still my favorite meat jun but this held up. More eggy than I like but the cuts were generous. Bi Bim Bap - The surprise of the day. Not conventional to have squash but it worked. By far the best for the money I've had for $6.50. A little spicier than most of the other places but well worth the money. Kim Chee & Spam Fried Rice - Koreans love their Spam as much as locals. I'm not sure why but this just didn't excite me. I guess it was rice, kim chee juice, kim chee, and spam with an egg. Maybe you have to be Korean to get excited about this. I was also surprised how reasonable to prices were on the beer. A 6 pack of Heineken was $9.50. Not really much different from the grocery store. Also, they wine was already chilled so if I'm in a hurry and forget to chill the wine, I'll stop by here. read more

I came across this little convenience store. Plate lunch is good! Ordered a meat jun and somen salad. It came with meat jun over cabbage, tuna-mac salad (super good) with takuwan and rice. She makes her own sauce. Super nice lady that remembers all her customers and seems greatful for every purchase. She let me eat here on the small ice chest and she even gave my son a free m&m minis. I was walking around the neighborhood after getting a massage and found this place. I'm always looking for a hole in the wall spot so I figured it I would try it out. There's only one person working the shop and then eatery area. So it took a while to get my orders done. This place also has no parking. We call this place "Mr. Handsome's." Like the first review said, this place is run by the cutest Korean couple. At first the guy was pretty quiet--all business--but after a few regular visits he became super chatty. I remember going into the store one day and being roped into watching some kind of animal program on the Korean channel. He was fascinated by the bears they were showing and kept talking to me about them. The wife called me "pretty lady," as she called my husband "Mr. Handsome." You knew she called everyone these terms of endearment, but it always put a smile on everyone's face. She is just the cutest thing ever--such a sweet person! Haha--I miss this place. Of all my experiences so far in Hawaii, my visit to this store is towards the top. The Korean lady running the place is hands down one of the nicest people I have ever encountered. We came in for a couple bottles of wine and some beer. We asked for a cork screw, and when they were out of stock, she just gave us her personal one for free out of the kindness of her heart. It doesn't end there! She asked where we were from, so I told her Austin and that we were on our honeymoon. She got giddy and gave us a bag of chips as a little wedding present. We were so ecstatic that we had to give her a big hug! This is the most genuine, kind, and well spirited mom and pop shop I have ever been to. This place deserves more than 5 stars. read more

This small Korean owned store is located on McCully just past Chef Mavro's restaurant and across from the new University Federal credit Union. Every time I step in through the door the wife will greet me with "How are you Mr. Handsome". I thought I was special for quite some time until my little bubble popped when I heard her greet another regular with the same phrase. The couple that run the place are really nice once you get to know them...I really just gotta work on my Korean so I can have deeper conversations with them :) read more

Tried a good amount of Musubis while I was on the island and this place has the best Musubi that packs so much flavor in the rice. Went to Musubi Cafe Iyasume after this and was disappointed to say the least. Highly recommend this place! read more
