Stopped here on our way to do the Nepali coast tour at 6:30am. I got the cherry turnover and my husband got a breakfast burrito, and a few malasadas to split. Loved everything!! I'm afraid after ready so many good reviews that I was disappointed. We tried the Portuguese rolls, the flying saucer, and the apple roll. The bread was soft, but the rolls were kind of cold and not very tasty. They should offer to warm them for you; maybe they'd taste better. The best thing I ate was the sweet apple roll. read more

While in Kauai, been wanting to come here but every time we were in the area, it was already closed for the day. We finally hit it before going to the airport to go to Oahu. Ordered their biggest loco moco (w/ 3 patties) and fried rice omelette. They were all good! Husbd, son and daughter shared the loco moco. Cheap and delicious! Bummed that we were not able to go here earlier in our trip cuz we wanted to hit it twice since they had good food! Will definitely try it again and next time, we'll try their pastries. read more

Decided to try some of the baked goods as raved about by some of you Yelpers. I didn't eat lunch, so when we dropped by, I made up for it by wolfing down several different non-dessert items: the crab roll, Portuguese sausage roll and the baked manapua. But I also partook in a few malasadas and cookies. Oh my...all of it was so good - all of it! The dough used in the rolls and malasadas is tasty without being oily or greasy. In fact, we dropped by in the early afternoon - which means that everything I ate was probably a few hours old. But it was still all very delicious. Something about the density of the dough that kept it fresh. So I can already imagine how many notches better everything could have tasted fresh out of the oven. The cashier gal was very friendly too. Because it was closing time and we had purchased so many items, she gave us some complimentary sweet buns and meatball rolls. All of it was so hard to resist that I went into a major carb overload; as a result, I had to take a jog later that evening. Twas worth it. read more

Wow after eating grossly overpriced hotel restaurant food (Grand Hyatt) and trying some restaurants in Popui it was a real treat to find simple straight forward Hawaiian plate lunch. We stopped for gas at the Shell station and noticed locals were outside eating their lunches so we decided to check it out before we boarded our flight to Oakland. The plate lunch of killer pork, rice and mac salad for $7 was a real treat. Next time I am back in Kauai I will eat there to save my money. Delicious rolls and pastry, and our 1.5 year old literally ate most of a breakfast quesadilla and was smiling and laughing the whole time. We had to go back for more! Our 3 year old thought he won the lottery because he got a hotdog for breakfast. We all really enjoyed our food, had some sweet stuff leftover for post hike snacks, and it only cost us $20! We found Hanalima Baking running a search for a take-out breakfast spot on our way to a hike. The picture of the menu someone had posted convinced us this is the simple breakfast spot we were looking for. We ordered a breakfast burrito and quesadilla which were being prepared fresh. While we waited (about 5 minutes), we saw customers - mostly locals - come through and pick up the baked goods. We also bought a few pastries - coconut turnover and apple roll. Tasted a variety of treats here. Both rolls (crab/ ham-cheese) are a bit dense, but still tasty. Of the manupua's, the pork was the best tasting. The port. sausage and spam manupua's was unbalanced. The banana bread was really moist and tasty. Biggest surprise was their spam musubi, which was very flavorful. Probably the best musubi i had on the whole island during my trip (incl. pono, mark's place, foodland, ara's, fish express, farmer's mkts,). I found out about this bakery by Googling "Kauai bakeries" during my vacation, so we decide to stop by. The owners were not as welcoming as most of the smaller stores in Kauai. Then, we found out they're not local; they're from Seal Beach, California! Because of the reviews, we got a savory crab roll, and ham & cheese roll ($2.25 each.) And for sweet, we got a coconut turnover and a cherry roll. If you use your credit card, they use Square, so make sure they have your correct email address if you want a receipt. The food was really good, but I ended up getting over-charged. When I didn't receive my receipt, I contacted the owners and that's when I realized they had over-charged. It wasn't much, a little over a dollar, but we only bought 4 items! I'm assuming they mis-entered my email address into Square, so I gave them my correct email address and they were going to correct the charge and send my receipt....well the charge was corrected but I still don't have the receipt! read more

Lobster roll and the Portuguese sausage roll is my favorite baked goods. Spam musubi, ufos (goteburg sausage with rice), and breakfast plates are quick pick ups for me. I haven't ordered any lunch plates before but I know some students at the nearby college campus ordered here and the food looks good! read more

The rolls for $2 each are a fun taste of something local. The Portuguese sausage roll had very little sausage and some cheese, and ditto for the crab roll. But they were tasty and we asked them to heat it up, so we had hot delicious sweet bread with fillings. Good for a snack, but too carb-y for a full lunch (we had gotten partial lunch earlier, so no problem). Got the Hawaii-made Lilokoi soda in a bottle that was terrific. Their triple chocolate brownie is Ghirardelli box mix from Costco, which I think is the best boxed brownie out there and frankly I'd just as soon get brownies that I know are great rather than spending money on homemade but dry or cakey. read more

The doughnuts were dry. The coconut turnover was shavings of coconut and there was barely any in there. There was no jelly inside the doughnut. We did get there at 10 am so maybe that was just the lefovers......seemed like they were sitting there for days. I feel bad giving 1 star but on our visit that is all it deserves. read more

As my bf and I drove to Lihue we were thinking of where to eat breakfast. Our Lihue trips usually involve stopping by Tip Top but we wanted somewhere different this time. At first Burger King seemed to settle for us until he suggested Hanalima Baking. I didnt even think to stop there but it has been a while since I last had a Crab Roll from there so it was set! I hope that it wasn't too late because I know all the good pastries run out fast. Luckily we got there before two vans pulled up! I got two crab rolls, the bf got a mini portuguese sausage/egg/rice plate, and we decided to split a pumpkin crunch. The staff were definitely 'morning' people and were very helpful. We were so hungry we ended up eating in the parking lot. The crab rolls were to die for and the pumpkin crunch was delish! Bf's mini plate was alright, nothing special; I recommend the bake goods over cooked foods from here, its a bakery for crying out loud! Good place to grab a quick bite and much more better than the boring fast food joint! read more

Awesome crab roll!!! Even without the crab the bread is just outstanding! Both in texture & taste! The coconut turnover & apple roll (with a dollop of perfect cinnamon roll frosting) are also fantastic! Had other interesting stuff too, like portugese sausage roll & lilikoi (passion fruit) scone (they were out of those though so I didn't get to try one :( ) And the lady there was also really friendly and nice! The first thing you need to know about Hanalima is their hours: they are open 6am to 1pm, so plan to get there early! I didn't know they opened so early in the morning and close early in the afternoon, so I was SOL when I came by at 3 to get some cookies. You can actually call ahead for an order and they can have it ready for you that day or the next depending on the size of your order and the items you want. I actually picked up several boxes of their cookies as gifts for welcome bags and my guests raved about them. I also made the mistake of going in there hungry, so I walked out with a box full of (very well priced) baked breakfast goodies: Portuguese sausage rolls (chopped 'Porto' sausage and cheese baked inside a soft roll- did I mention it was still warm from the oven? It was absolutely SUBLIME!), crab rolls (chopped crab and some cheese baked into a soft roll) and a flying saucer (sloppy joe baked into a roll). The rolls were rather dangerously priced at $2 each- a little bit of money goes a LOOOOONG way here, so it's a good thing it wasn't closer to my hotel or else I would have had to buy a bigger wardrobe at the end of my trip! The salespeople were really nice- be nice to them, ok? They take a lot of undeserved BS from some of the tourists and they were some of the nicest people we met on the island (which is saying a lot, since almost everyone here has been exceptionally friendly). read more

Bought a red velvet birthday cake from Hanalima, an entire sheet that cost over $60, and all I can say is I would have had a better cake if I bought boxed mixes at Foodland!!! IT WAS THE ABSOLUTE WORST CAKE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!! My daughters first birthday just happened to fall on the same day of the famous Tsunami scare (Feb. 27, 2010) so with all the commotion going on in Hawaii I didn't take the time out to check the cake when I picked it up at the bakery. Only at the party did I open the box and see the kindergarten scribbles that spelled out "Happy First Birthday Alicia". JUST STRAIGHT CAPITAL LETTERS, NO DECORATIONS, NO FONT, absolutely nothing that would indicate a professional baker had made the cake!!! On top of the embarrassing writing, the cake was soooo dry it crumbled as I cut it!!! It seemed like they had made the cake a few days before they sold it to me!!! I cried later out of embarrassment. I cannot believe Hanalima sold me a dry, ugly cake for 60 bucks. ILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN AND NEITHER WILL ANY OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS ON KAUAI!! Way to treat the locals Hanalima! ZERO STARS!!! read more
