Red bean Taiyaki and chocoholic taiyaki
    Kat P.

I love that they make their taiyaki so fresh and aesthetically pleasing. I ordered the chocolate taiyaki and requested red adzuki bean (anko) inside the fish pastry. The service is fast and they understood my order. The misubi was also very flavorful. The spam made with so much flavor and the rice is perfectly cooked soft and fluffy. The ambiance is fun and a bit chilly. It's a great place to visit real quick and my favorite San Antonio taiyaki place. I love going next door to check out the Japanese store after.

The ube soft serve and taiyaki were delicious, great flavor overall. That said, it felt overpriced for the experience. When we walked in, service was slow and a bit awkward, and the dining area wasn't very clean or put together. Additionally, the place could definitely be lit up more so it was difficult to study and hang out in. Cute vibes with a nice photospot if you're just stopping by for a quick snack, but between the price and lackluster atmosphere, it didn't quite feel worth it.

So yummy! Former coffee shop and specialty tea shop barista here! Stopped in after graduation for a tasty treat and it was so delicious! This was my second time visiting Hanamaru. The place was pretty empty when we went, but we loved the vibe of the place nonetheless. I ordered a Red Bean Taiyaki with Vanilla and Matcha Mix Ice Cream topped with Matcha Powder and a Mochi Stick, while my husband ordered the Spam Musubi; we also split an Iced Hojicha Latte. The Tayaki was a little more on the crispy side this time around which was okay but it admittedly took away a little bit from the treat. The Red Bean filling, Ice Cream, and Mochi Stick and were super yummy, however, and made the crunch a little less disappointing. The Musubi was super warm, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The Hojicha Latte had an excellent roasted flavor, but had an added sweetness that kept the drink from being bitter. It was crafted excellently and we enjoyed every sip. We're absolutely looking forward to returning to try more from their menu, ESPECIALLY the lunch menu. The curry smelled so good!

Cute ice cream shop next to a japanese grocery store. The ice cream itself is sweet, creamy, and smooth! Adding the matcha powder as a topping gives it a perfect bitterness. They have few flavors, but they do it well. I think overall the freshness could be improved a bit. the strawberry was a little overripe, and the taiyaki itself lacked the crispy shell. i saw them making it fresh however, and wonder what needs to be tweaked. Music can be a little loud so unideal for studying and they don't have any outlets near the sitting area.

My husband and I shared: - Blueberry Taiyaki - Sausage and Cheddar Taiyaki - Pepperoni and Mozzarella Taiyaki - Ube Filled Taiyaki topped with Mochi and Caramel Syrup over Vanilla Ice Cream - Spam Musubi with Egg - Mitarashi Dango I love Taiyaki and it's always a treat to find a place that has savory options. Those were my favorite here, but the sweet was good too. I've never had Dango before and absolutely loved it. I don't think you can go wrong here. Everything was delicious!

This is the cutest spot to by after dinner for a great dessert! They have phenomenal ice cream fish shaped cones with delicious flavors! They also have spam masubi that was very good! It's super cute and clean inside and the staff was very kind and helpful!

My girlfriend and her sister both enjoy this place for the niche items they sell as well as the quality. I personally do not enjoy it much as the flavors don't exactly speak to my palette, but that didn't stop me from trying it and giving it a fair shot. Service was great and the cafe was cute inside.

Such a cute place for dessert, snacks, and yummy drinks! Friendly service and ample room for tables. The upside down matcha taiyaki was yummy!! The fish waffle was slightly sweet, lightly crispy and slightly chewy- perfect texture. We took photos with a fun Halloween decorated backdrop! I'll have to shop the Japanese grocery store next door next time

This place is the spot for some of the really cool fish waffles and Ice cream. Yummy stuff. They offer unique flavor like ube and matcha for ice cream aswell as a variety of toppings. Lots of fun things on the menu! Service is usually kind and the place is decorated very nicely.

Different but delicious! The cashier was helpful in making suggestions. I expected the mochi to be bigger so wouldn't get that again. The place could use more decor, and maybe something to explain the items on the menu. Still yummy regardless!

I generally like this place but they have definitely gone up in price. Almost $11.00 for a cup of matcha icecream. It came with 2 toppings but they were out of mochi. So, I asked can we get 2 strawberries instead. He said it would be an extra .75 for a half of a strawberry, that was confusing since you're out of another topping and you're allowed 2. But it's soooo good so I guess it doesn't matter. They seem to be out of a lot of things even though they still had 2.5 hours until closing. Overall, they have good ice cream so if I'm in the area I'll come back.

We came here after shopping at the supermarket next door. Quite spacious but not too well lit for a cloudy day. Still a good number of patrons hanging out inside though. We got the ube and red bean taiyaki. They were both moist and the filling was nice and warm. Def done proper. They also had a bunch of other seasonal flavors like apple or pumpkin pie taiyaki but we didn't have the stomach for them. You can get teas with various sweetness levels. We got ours unsweetened and they were still pretty good. We ordered ahead by 10 min and our order was ready by the time we got there!

Stopped by Hanamaru cafe after dinner for dessert! They actually have food items as well as dessert (soft serve). Taiyaki cones come with a cute fish made of a soft dough and can be filled with sweet or savory toppings. You can order the taiyaki upside down in a cup, in a cup alone, or as a cone. I ordered the upside down taiyaki with swirl soft serve (vanilla and matcha). The place itself is a very open concept with high ceilings and beautiful minimalist Japanese decor/aesthetic. I loved my experience here! Service was good and the taiyaki soft serve is delicious!!

I don't think it's the staff's fault, more a shortcoming of the kitchen setup, but it still caused a pretty significant wait. We tried to go on a Saturday morning, not realizing how popular it was, and it was a total no-go. So we ordered ahead for Sunday morning, planning to just pick up and bring food back to the house. The food was ready when we arrived, but the coffee wasn't (I don't think they have a fridge or warmer to keep drinks at the right temperature, so they don't make them until you come in to pick up.) We had to remind them that we'd ordered drinks and we ended up waiting another 20-30 minutes, our food in hand, while we waited on 3 iced coffee orders. I think the issue was a mix of crowds and kitchen layout. They were very clearly trying to make sure that the people who were seated in the restaurant were being served as well, but all of the drink orders were going through this one, tiny coffee station that frankly couldn't keep up. And I think our drink orders were basically added at the end of the drink queue when we arrived to pick up our order. We didn't get any sort of priority because we'd technically ordered ahead. We essentially skipped the line, but not the queue on drinks. All in all, I'd definitely want to visit again. The food and drinks WERE really great. I had the avocado toast with chicken and for a seemingly simple dish it was absolutely phenomenal. The abuelita's was the best of the 3 iced coffee offerings we tried, and I would definitely order again. But we'll definitely have to plan/strategize around crowds and be prepared for a long wait even if we order ahead.

3/5 Stars - Mixed Visit - Great Fresh Juices, But Service and Atmosphere Fell Short:…read moreI stopped by First Watch for a casual lunch/brunch with a friend, and while some parts were enjoyable, others left me underwhelmed for the price point. Our waitress started off strong with excellent customer service--she was friendly, attentive when taking our order, and made a good first impression. However, after that, she disappeared and didn't check back on us at all. We had to flag down another employee when our food arrived because the order was completely wrong. Thankfully, they fixed it quickly once we pointed it out, and the corrected dishes came out fine. The fresh juices are definitely a highlight--I really enjoyed them and they're a big reason I'd consider returning. They're bright, flavorful, and feel genuinely fresh, which aligns with First Watch's focus on wholesome ingredients. On the downside, the restaurant itself needed some attention: the restroom wasn't clean, and the trash cans were overflowing, which isn't great for a place that emphasizes a fresh, inviting vibe. The music was also cranked up way too loud--I could barely hear the waitress (when she was around) or even talk to my lunch date without straining. It made the whole experience feel chaotic rather than relaxing. Overall, the food (once corrected) was solid, and those juices stand out, but between the service gaps, maintenance issues, and noise level, it didn't feel worth the higher price compared to similar spots like Panera or Jason's Deli, where I can get fresh options in a calmer, more consistent setting. I'd come back specifically for the juices on a quick grab-and-go, but for a full sit-down meal, I'd probably choose one of those alternatives instead.

We didn't realize this place was a cousin of Shiro and owned by the same guy until we saw some similarities in their style, layout and menu but nevertheless, the food was still absolutely amazing. Even though the ambiance had some similarities, I'm glad their food options were distinguished because otherwise could have just gone downtown. You cannot go wrong with any of their food options. Highly recommend doing family style so you can get a taste of everything and all the different flavors. We started with the gyoza and calamari which were to die for and were not greasy at all. Pork ssam, wagyu, miso pasta and octopus all brought a little bit of their own element and flare to your palate that it's hard to describe unless you try it. Wagyu was just melt in your mouth delicious. Pork ssam and octopus had their crunchy texture and umami flavors. The miso pasta added a light refreshing touch to balance everything out but don't let it fool ya, the noodles will expand in your stomach. We topped it off with their yuzu cake. Our only disappointment was they were out of their other desserts but nevertheless everyone of us left full and happy. Would come here again.

When I first read about Yozora, I honestly thought it sounded a bit pretentious. Fascinating, but…read morepretentious. Because the idea of music being an actual integral part of the dining experience--not just some kind of background noise--felt a little precious for my taste. I'm glad to admit I was wrong. So let's start with the ambiance and the vibe of Yozora. It's in a fairly non-descript kind of center; not bad but not specially memorable. But the space itself is open and has an air of restrained sophistication. And then there's that hi-fi set up. The music at Yozora really is part of the experience, but it's not intrusive in the way that you'd think. Most of what my dining companion and I heard was 50s and 60s jazz, and it was perfect for the occasion. Sushi and Coltrane are a great mix, and even though we were not far from the hi-fi system, I could hear every word of our conversation, without the need for either of us to raise a voice. Somehow, it's like the music operates on a different frequency from regular table chatter. Suffice to say, the music enhanced the mood and really set a scene for Yozora's chefs to tell some stories. And that, they do really well. We started out with seasonal tempura and miso masu ceviche--ocean trout marinated in miso, soy, and lime juice--that was sublime. But funnily enough, the real star small plate was a truffle creamy miso soup that was earthy and slightly sweet at the same time and was silky in texture. From there, we ordered a series of crudo and battera, each unique in its own way. It was wonderful stuff, accompanied by a rice lager. The kitchen at Yozora is not shy about experimenting with non-traditional flavors and ingredients. Sometimes it works really well; sometimes, not as well, but it's never bad, and the servers actually ask for feedback for the kitchen, which is something I rarely see. Yozora honestly seems to be most concerned with creating a great dining experience, and it does that, from the chefs to the line cooks to the servers (who are helpful and attentive without hovering). The music, the mood, and the menu add up to a memorable experience.
