First of all this is not a one star review- it is in the negatives- you just can't leave a review without giving it a star! Wow- I don't even know where to begin...worst experience dining out in a loooooong time. To start, we sat on the patio and were excited to try this place in Auburn! The food server started out friendly and we were looking forward to trying the lunch Bento Box special! We began to eat lunch when we look down and see a HUGE cockroach crawling below our feet and onto the base of the table- at that point we informed the waitress and asked to be moved to another patio table! Not only were our appetites totally diminished by the fact that there was a COCKROACH , but it was totally dismissed by the food server! We told her and she simply stepped on it and LEFT IT THERE- half dead and legs still moving around.... We couldn't believe our eyes... There was no attempt to remove the half dead cockroach (about 2 inches long ) from the very middle of the patio ground! We were left to continue our lunch with the cockroach still in sight. ...AND more people were taken to that very table to dine, with the cockroach at their feet and nobody informed them! We were completely disgusted, the waitress never came back, and a manager came over to ask us how things were going. We let her know we were very dissatisfied with the choice to leave the cockroach right next to us in plain sight of our food and our experience had been ruined .We demanded that somewhat of a discount be taken off of the bill, to compensate for our lunch being completely ruined. The Manager came back to our table and had informed us that the owner of the restaurant agreed to take 20% off, which was literally $2.50 off the entire bill. Soo grossed out with everything , the cockroach, the service, the lack of health and safety! Ughhh don't waste your money here! Their excuse was that the restaurants all have problems with cockroaches ,because so many food restaurants nearby! Ordered the Chirashi bowl. 7 pieces, rice, garnish. Not $15 worth as fish was small and rice was abundant. Water tastes nasty (chlorine) taste. I went to pay, waiters says no AMEX and owners that said special time was no where around. Waitress is calling to confirm but no answer. I left paying with my debit card so I can get reimbursed. Very disappointed in the service at hunami....there were two sushi chefs and one server and the server took 15 minutes just to even acknowledge us! There were only two other people in the restaurant! I am a server and bartender and I would at least greet my guest and say hello! Then it took another 10 minutes after ordering to recieve waters! It was just embarrassing. The sushi is why I put two stars. And the only reason I tipped f Was for the mess we left from the kids. He forgot when we asked for napkins. I asked for two sake bombs because I knew he would take forever getting one. And we were done with all our meals before he got around to it. I also hate knowing that when I tip the server it goes in a jar that the manager/owner takes half of for her personal use and the splits between everyone. Living in Auburn for awhile, first time costumer. Overall, great experience. Food was good, service was good (more to come later, and overall atmosphere was good. Fish and rolls seemed like good quality and tasted awesome. Service was interesting, we had three waiters it felt like, each checking in every few minutes not knowing someone else just checked in. They have a great location whether you are inside or out. I wish they would clean up the inside and have the decorations make sense. They need to update menus and get ride of the plastic table covers that have that sticky feel. The upstairs has so much potential. Will come back again. read more

We weren't sure how it would be with the most recent reviews, but we ended up being pleasantly surprised. The servers were friendly, unlike previous reviews. We chose to sit at the bar since it's a sushi spot. We ordered a chirashi don, amaebi, calamari and a Saba bento box. We both finished our meals and at the end couldn't stop taking bites of the awesome sushi rice. The Saba was great too, not over cooked like many places. The amaebi is always a gamble, but they won. The heads were cooked perfectly and the bodies were firm and fresh. Overall it was a great dinning experience and would come back again. My only recommendation would be get Kizami Wasabi. This was probably some of the worst sushi I've ever had. The rice was totally overcooked/mushy, the fish was flavorless and clearly had been frozen, and the sauce was all mayo. Also, the house salad was just plain bizarre... Canned corn, pineapple, olives, celery, carrots and lettuce doused in a huge amount of mayo-laden dressing... Not to mention that the service was horrible. It took 45min for the food, which they messed up and had to remake. Overall, just no. I reward 2 stars solely based on the fact that our waitress was a sweet, high school aged girl who didn't know any better and offered us free mochi... This used to be one of our favorite sushi haunts. Unfortunately, in the last year or so it has gone down hill. The service has gone from excellent to non-existant. My last trip was punctuated with a beer that never showed up. Through the entire meal. Also, the last time I went the sushi chef was surley and just unplesant to be around (I was at the bar.) The older gentleman that used to be the sushi chef was excellent, but I haven't seen him the last two times I've tried the place. I Have never eaten sushi in Auburn but was craving it today. When I choose a place to eat my decisions are always determined by my Yelp search. In my search today Yelp's reviews showed two locations that were only determined to be the best by one review, in my opinion that's a tie. These places are Hanami Sushi and Ninja sushi. My Decision of who will be better will be determined by what roll they recommend based on my preferences of me wanting something spicy, does not have cream cheese and is not fried. Hanami Sushi recommended I try the "All night Long Roll" Ingredients: Spicy Red crab, deep fried shrinp, cucumber, Spicy Tuna, Yellow onion, Jalapeno with spicy BBQ Sauce and Torched, Yes People they brought out the blow torched and chard the whole roll. Overall the roll was pretty good, I liked the flavor of the Yellow onions that were torched and gave the roll a pleasantly nice chard flavor. The BBQ sauce kinda overpowered the roll and made it a bit difficult to taste the rest of the ingredients, It even over powered the jalapeno that kinda defused its spiciness. Another problem which I'm debating to determine if its a problem would be the rice they used on the roll,I Could describe the roll the be cooked "Al Dente". I somewhat enjoyed it but was not use to eating sushi rice with that kinda texture. I've been to many sushi restaurants and this was the first place that rice ever had such a texture. Next I ordered Amaebi, Instead of ordering something like mochi ice cream for dessert I finish my meal with Amaebi nigiri. They had a beautiful presentation but the deep fried head was glazed with some sort of sweet sauce and once again the true flavors of the shrimp head were masked by the sauce. In my quest to determine which location was better I could not make I clear decision. Both locations have their unique decor and the staff in both locations are friendly. Yes, it's 200 miles from the ocean, but this is a decent sushi place given the location. Large, fun selection of rolls and a wait staff that is always smiling, generous and genuinely nice. They have the usual proliferation of roll choices which tends to be the smarter choice. A fun choice is the "Naked Fish" roll. It is rolled in a strip of cucumber instead of rice and nori. Fun, different, light and refreshing. I also like the "Old Auburn" roll with slivers of lemon on top. Their sake selection seems to be ok. We were a fan of the cold one in a pink bottle (sorry, I forgot the name and google was no help). Having had truly amazing nigiri before (Japantown in LA), I would recommend sticking to the basics here if you must order it: variations on tuna, tamago and unagi are what I go with. I have this policy for pretty much any sushi place that isn't already legendary. On one occasion, we did have to wait for our food for a while, we were given some complimentary crocettes which were quite tasty and something we've ordered again. I have enjoyed this sushi venue many a times! recently I grabbed a good book, and parked myself in the corner alone there! I enjoyed edamame followed by a deep fried spicy tuna roll that was INCREDIBLE! The service was friendly and super efficient (they even left me alone to read and eat, and just quietly kept refilling my water!) I am a fan for sure! My son even LOVES their miso soup! Man this place is incredible right from the start! To keep it nice and short its located in a wonderful location, old town Auburn. The place is wonderfully decorated which makes for a great family atmosphere. This place is also for everyone not just sushi fatties like my self because they do have traditional Japanese style plates such as Udon Sukiyaki being one of my fav. =) On to the sushi, =P the variety of rolls that they have is incredible and so is the nigiri. The three rolls that I loved the most was the Crazy Salmon,Volcano roll and the tsunami roll. The Crazy Salmon being my Fav of all three is not just for the taste which i can spend and hour talkin about it but its how its presented. Its foiled wrapped and then lit on fire!!! which created a new sushi eating experience for cause i had never seen that before done with sushi. Now eating sashimi and nigiri here is like walking into a museum because you will see nothing but a work of art. The fish here is as tasty, full of flavor and fresh as it gets, which is really incredible for the restaurants location. One thing also unique to this restaurant is the sauces, all homemade , there is even a fresh mango sauce! They all add on the sushies already great taste. At this restaurant they also serve great Japanese Beer and Sake to enjoy your food with. I have been here many times and have always enjoyed it, however, the last three times I have dined here have been very disappointing. The food is always delicious but the service is very poor. I have had to get up and ask for more water, to ask for additional sauces, and to take food off of the tab because it was never brought to me. It did not feel like the employees were very concerned about us as customers, which seemed atypical given my experience here in the past. First let me say that I am quite particular when it comes to Japanese restaurants, having been to Japan twice. This authentic little Japanese restaurant offers all kinds of options, bento boxes, sushi, donburi, and udon. We are addicted to the Ika Calamari and donburis. The calamari is tenderized, battered, and fried. The teriyaki sauce is sweeter and smoother with no lingering aftertaste. Many meals come with miso and salad to start. The salad is unique, with the usual Japanese mayo and lettuce, but added with black olives and corn. It's quite good. I like this place because it stays authentic. At the entrance you are welcomed with sake barrels, fish kites (fish are a symbol of the warrior class in Japan), and kabuki theatre masks. Their teriyaki and tempura are unlike what I'm used to in this area and truly great in their own way. I am guessing the owners are from Kyoto region. The place is a little expensive, but we plan on making this our regular hang out. read more

My wife and I were here for lunch on Monday and it was fairly empty until the high school got out for lunch and then it was suddenly mobbed, so beware of that. It's nice they offer students a $5 "student" lunch - paper tray with teriyaki rice and some pieces of california roll - the line was out the door. Starter is nice hot miso with tofu. I had a 3-item bento with salmon teriyaki (fresh tasting), tempura (perfectly crisp), and spice tuna roll (tasty) - my only issue was the "blended" raw tuna mix in the roll, I'd prefer whole pieces. Wife had the 4x4 which is oddly two types nigiri (tuna and salmon), but 4 pieces each - but the tuna was "melt in your mouth". She also had the "tobiko" (fish egg) roll - she liked but not for me! Total cost (with a drink) about $40 - not cheap for lunch but we ordered a lot. As a rare occasional lunch (or dinner) treat - can't go wrong here. read more

TERRIBLE. My husband and I made a special trip to include a visit to this sushi establishment for our 8 year anniversary. WE WAITED 30 MINUTES....NO SERVICE. When we first arrived we were seated outdoors directly in front of the front door, well within view of the several employees that walked right by us and served other patrons who were seated AFTER us. The kicker? When we first arrived, a woman who I'm assuming may be an owner or management (assuming by the way she was dressed differently than the servers) sat us down. We asked if she could turn on the patio heater beside us. She claimed she didn't know how to work the device and asked my husband to try to turn it on. As he was attempting, a female server ran up to him speaking VERY loudly and in a disciplinary tone, demanding that he stop touching the heater telling him, "he should have never touched" the heater. We explained that the woman that sat us down ASKED him to turn it on but she continued arguing that my husband, at the ripe young age of 58, apparently has never seen a propane heater in his life. I'd like to hope that management would see this account of our horrible experience, but somehow I sincerely doubt they would care. Would give zero stars if possible. read more

Seriously why do I keep thinking it was just a bad night for them when really they're just a bad sushi restaurant! Three times all fails before I've finally had enough and write this review! Pros: it's in auburn & you can sit outside - that's it! Cons: OVERPRICED first off, fish portions in rolls are barely there and have zero fresh flavor. 90% of every roll option is overstuffed with fake crab. Sauce on top is slim to none with no creativity of flavor to them. Rolls come out at all diff times causing you to ask where certain Ones are they forgot (like ummm hello your appetizer first would be nice before dinner) have to ask waiter/waitress several times for basic forgotten things like wasabi/ginger, soy sauce, silverware, water, your ROLLS, etc. they don't offer free refills instead sell you canned soda with a glass of ice for $1.95! You express your allergic to Something request it left out of all rolls to only find it still on one of the three rolls they brought out on the save plate even. Avocado was a strange color like they put something in it to Preserve it longer indicating to me it's not fresh--- ewww Won't take reservations, owners are unfriendly, and don't bother greeting you upon arrival It's more like your an inconvenience and they claim all Red cap soy sauces are filled with low sodium (green caps) yet they don't taste like it and if they screw up your order giving your rolls to the wrong person in your group yet on the same plate as that persons rolls, sorry it's your fault order another and pay for both anyways! Did I mention OVERPRICED! Maybe for those who've yet to experience great Sushi I can see why you may be fooled into accepting this place but I've had great sushi and at more than one place so I can't accept what they get away with here by giving them my business anymore. Hoping someone better comes to steal their thunder soon we could use a great true sushi place up here! One of the best sushi places around. Hands down the best miso soup. Some of the wait staff can be a little friendlier, but I can deal with that for the good sushi. Rolls range from about $4-$16. Their staff is wonderfulWe stopped in after work with our baby to grab some sushi for dinner. They were super sweet to him, brought us out some edamame on the house to keep him happy and busy while we waited, they were helpful in helping select the rolls as well. The wait was a good 1/2 hour but they were busy and we didn't call ahead so that couldn't be helped. Their rolls are pretty large, we got the Tsunami, Caterpillar, New Auburn and Sex on the Beach, between my husband and I we had leftovers!!
