This place is really really good! I LOVE sushi, but with that being said, I love GOOD sushi. The sushi here was wonderful. It was fresh, didn't taste like it has been sitting out all day, they had rolls that I've never tried before, as well as my favorites like spicy salmon hand roll, but WAY BETTER then what I normally love. I highly recommend this place to anyone that's looking for a good sushi place. Also, a great atmosphere for a date! Service was pretty good, not the top, but the prices weren't the most pricey, so I think it's ok :) all in all, it's wonderful sushi for the price! read more

The food is good, the fish is fresh, and lunch specials (bento boxes) are nice. It would be 4 stars if the staff that welcomes you at the door was not so unpleasant always. The hamachi sashimi I ordered was either not fresh or just poor quality or maybe both, after eating two pieces I ended up throwing in the trash, It was like it had gristle in it, it was hard to chew and tough. Albacore sashimi is wonderful other faves are baked sea bass sushi, green mussels, lobster roll, wild caught salmon, and Japanese scallops. THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI SPOT IN THE VALLEY! Not only is the fish fresh as can be, the environment is calm and welcoming. The food here is fine, nothing special, but if you live or work in the area, there are not a ton of places. My biggest issue, is the service, or the complete lack there of. There are really very few restaurants with more rude people working there. I work on the same street and have been in a large group twice and have been basically told to hurry up. And not because there were people waiting, and not because we had been there to long, maybe 40 minutes or so. Again, just now, called to see if they could fax a menu over since I am stuck working late, and the answer was a brusque NO. So, they are back no my no go list again, until I break down in 6 months. read more

I've been to this restaurant a couple times but it is usually my last resort because it is close to home. I never thought it was an above average sushi restaurant but tonight was on another level. The customer service is absolutely awful. The owner himself was very rude and raised his voice at my family after a complaint about the quality of the fish. I was recommended by a friend to try this restaurant. It was my first visit. Try out there lunch combo special. The California roll is delicious. Tempura was alright cause there sauce isn't as great as I expected to be. Given a lower stars because customer service. They wouldn't substitute rice with more salad. Come on, it's salad I wanted more not a steak. I don't want more rice since I'm eating a lot of rice from California roll. Also, wanted to get a cup to go for my ice water and says they don't give cups to go. Ridiculous. I would rather go elsewhere that provides better service. read more

2.5 stars. Clean restaurant, decent service..... but (as others have pointed out), the tiny portions are overpriced. Would it kill them to give you a little more food, like a dollop of seaweed salad, or sunomono? Sorry but that's way too much $$$ for a tough sliced rib eye steak and a few pieces of broccoli, carrots & weirdly, 2 pieces of a small potato. Ate here a few weeks ago, and it was poor to average. Let me say I eat Sushi about 3 times a week and have eaten here before and it has always just been ok. The frustrating thing is you get an excellent piece of fish and right next to it a poor piece, totally inconsistent. Friend asked if they could have plain cooked salmon, the rude waitress said NO immediately. After a few mins of her explaining she did not want any soy or teriyaki sauce the waitress said...oh I give you salmon no sauce. Our salads and soups were dumped on the table and we were left to figure out who ordered what. Most in my party went with the bento boxes and were happy ( mostly cooked food). I went with the sashimi and one or two pieces were delicious the rest tasteless. We never did get our drinks refilled.,..never been to a place that did not refill green tea. We were sitting with empty water glasses. I read one of the reviews that said a good restaurant is hard to find... For sushi in LA or even the valley I have to disagree. We just came home from this restaurant after having mediocre sushi for the last time. It's fairly large for a sushi bar/restaurant and pretty comfortable. But tonight when I told the waitress that my lobster roll was not good, she apologized and left the table. Later she returned and told me that the owner said he wouldn't take it off the bill even though I didn't ask. So next time we are in the mood for sushi I guess we'll just try someplace else. read more

I had lunch there today and it was ok. Sushi was better then average, but not close to the amazing sushi that we have on ventura blvd in Sherman oaks and studio city area. Pieces were average size and somewhat chilled. Flavor of fish was nice. Miso soup was below average as it wasn't that flavorful or hot. Service was disorganized. read more

This review is for lunch only (as I work in the neighborhood, but don't usually make it back out for dinner). I've never had a questionable piece of fish at Hanami. Everything is always super fresh and always tasty. The lunch prices are very fair considering the quality of the fish (it is NOT one of those half-price places), and if you get one of the to-go only combinations, it's actually pretty cheap. Personal faves are: Spicy Shrimp Hurricane Roll, Spicy Scallop Hand-Roll (THE best I've ever had), Albacore lunch combo, Spicy Tuna Bowl, Mango Salmon Roll. while i will admit that the service had a jekyl and hyde quality to it, if you're dumb enough to sit at a table and not the bar when going for sushi, it's your own fault. this is the hands down best sushi i've ever had in southern california. i tell people this, and they insist on taking me to their favourite sushi place, usually dragging me out to hollywood or santa monica, and i'm generally unimpressed. i then take them to hanami and make a believer out of them. every element of their sushi is supreme. the seaweed, the rice, and the fresh fresh fish. the staple rolls to their fancier american style rolls are flawless. i will spend all the money i have in my pockets and sometimes the money my company has in their pockets on this sushi. like cheng mentioned, the chefs have a very discerning eye for the freshness of their fish, and if you ask them to make a suggestion, you won't be disappointed. to the service, i came in for a birthday, and though we were served the wrong roll entirely and asked them to take it back, the manager refused to take the charge off the bill, which was annoying, but i'll take it. the next time i come in i get excellent service from the same manager. oh well. read more

Everything is probably like, a dollar more than maybe if you were at a sushi joint in Northridge but they got those Calabasas bills so... Anyway, I usually go there for lunch and it's pretty fast! I went there for dinner once and it was great! Fish is always fresh/in good condition and the rice is always seasoned well! I can't remember which roll I had but it was some yellowtail thing and soooo refreshing and good! The host is super quick and hard-working, which I can appreciate. I just placed an order for shiitake roll to go so went in and paid for it after I paid he told me it is shiitake albacore. I told him the menu does not say it's with albacore and I am vegan. He said well you asked for the roll and we only have a shiitake albacore (which mind you is not on their menu. No offer to change or refund me the money. So after a long time of hesitating to try this place due to the low reviews, i decided to give it a shot. Came in on a monday night and grabbed a seat at the sushi bar.Right away as we walked in, i loved the atmosphere.For the most part we only ordered sushi, the favorites were definitely the red snapper sushi and the albacore toro sushi, delicious! For the first time i also tried Kohada and Sanma sushi, both very good. The fish was super fresh and was beautifully served. We ended the night with a sesame ice cream and a green ice cream tempura. The total came out to be just a little over $100. So for two people and the amount of food we ate, it was perfect. Definitely one of my new spots, highly recomend this place, great chefs and awesome sushi. read more

Now I really used to like this place. I've been going to Hanami since I was like 15, and the rolls are really good. But yesterday I went with some co-workers, and it was little to be desired. I ordered the albacore sashimi, it was kind of mushy and soggy. And our waitress looked annoyed and bored and like she was doing us a favor by even being there. Over the years since Hanami first opened, it was difficult to compete with their fresh and tasty sushi. Anytime I would eat somewhere else, I would always say that nothing beats Hanami. But in the last year or so, things have changed. The lunch specials which used to be a great deal are now served with tiny slivers of fish. The fish is never as fresh as I remember it being in the past and the service is great some days And pretty bad others. And recently it seems very rushed... Like they're trying to get you in and out. Consistency is really important in the Food industry, especially when your customer base are locals and returns. I'll always go back to Hanami in hopes that it will be as I remembered it! read more
