My fiancé and I go to the Van Nuys location often so we decided to give this a try. We were seated right away at the bar. The sushi chef took our drink orders and asked a waitress to get them for us. We sat there waiting for a few minutes for someone to give us a proper menu. I finally had to ask the guy (the same one that sat us) standing at the hostess area for a menu. I'm not sure why they'd seat someone without giving them a menu. Anyway, we ordered quite a few things from the menu: + Agadashi Tofu - 7/10 - this was good but I wish the tofu was a little crispier on the outside. Other than that, the broth was good. + Mixed Tempura - 10/10 - delicious, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. + Spicy Tuna Hand Roll - 8/10 - a nice sized hand roll full of spicy tuna. It only had spicy tuna and rice so I wish it had something added like cucumber. + Chili Garlic Roll - 3/10 - I was pretty disappointed in this. The sauce was very overpowering and too sweet. Maybe it would've been better without the sauce. + Fried Fish Bones - 9/10 - I had never had this before and was pleasantly surprised. Tonight's meal exceeded the quality and variety of many other places that are 4 to 5 star rated. Better than Shibuya, a local favorite. The quality of the toro, the engawa, and the live sweet shrimp was extraordinary. In a way, I didn't want to write this review because I don't want my secret to get out, but in the end I felt that they deserved it. Hanami is great! If you are in Calabasas I recommend it. There is lots of seating and a long bar. If you go for lunch, try to get here about 11:30 otherwise, you will have to wait. Located on Agoura Rd in the Albertsons shopping center next to Sharkys and across Starbucks in Calabasas, this place serves up some fresh quality sushi that will surely satisfy anyones belly. We were greeted immediately by the friendly hostess upon entering and was seated right away. Our server immediately approached us and was very friendly and accommodating. They definitely have a great selection of food items on their menu and good lunch specials. I opted for the Lunch B combo (3 item)(14.95)which consisted of Spicy Tuna roll, mixed Tempura, and Beef Teriyaki. The ratio of rice vs fish was perfect on the spicy tuna and the tempura was nice and crisp and not oily. The Beef Teriyaki was good and full flavored but had small portions. They could have added more. I don't know if that's the amount for lunch but they really need to add more. I also ordered a Mango Salmon Roll (13.95) which was very delicious. The freshness of the Salmon with the mango and Avocado just blends well on this roll. My friend had the Albacore Special (14.95) which consisted of Salad, Albacore roll, Albacore Nigiri, and a small tofu square drizzled in a sweet peanut sauce. Good portions of food and you can taste the quality and freshness of the fish. I was really impressed with the overall service here. Considering that we came here during the lunch hour rush, we were seated right away without no wait and our orders came out really fast. This is one of those places where you never want to try anything new because you're so hooked on the first thing you have! I'll drive across town on certain days to have their grilled shrimp skewers, followed by the Red Dragon roll. The word is out because Hanami is now busy on a regular basis. I stopped by here for a quick lunch so I ordered the ramen lunch special which was supposed to be $8.95 but was charged $9.95. I have frequented Hanami for several years for lunch. The sushi is good, the service from the Sushi Bar Chefs is good. The front host and lack of service with server are the reason why I am not giving it more than 3 stars. I waited 10 minutes to even be acknowledged waiting standing my the sign that says "please wait to be seated" At one point the Sushi Chef behind the bar is telling the host and server to serve customers! I get the Combo A box ($15ish) which is a lunch special they have. You get two choices of california rolls, sashimi, teriaki chicken, tempura and a few other things. You also get rice and a salad and the portions are huge- especially the sashimi. The only thing I don't like is you cannot custom order any of their lunch specials- I try super hard not to be Sally from When Harry Met Sally, but sometimes I can't help it. I like what I like! I wish I could get a different option in the box- I'd even pay for it if it was more expensive. My coworkers get the handroll special and they LOVE them.
