Shrimp Tempura Roll (bottom left). All other items were complementary!

Wow! First time coming to Hanaya Sushi and to be honest, I was a little skeptical of this tiny dark hole in the wall. But interacting with the owner totally changed my perspective! What a genuinely generous and kind person! The owner runs this business by himself and puts so much care in his food. I only ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll but it was great. And look at all the complimentary goodies he gave! I will definitely come back to this support local small business. One peice of advice, call in ahead of time to place your order. As mentioned, he runs the business by himself and fulfills his orders by himself. The Bake Seafood Roll takes ~45 mins to fulfill and all other rolls ~10. Have patience for his kind soul

This place is a hidden gem when you are craving sashimi or sushi. I placed an order over the phone, and was quoted 25-30 minutes. Right when I got there, the food was already ready before the time was up. The owner chatted with me and also kindly gave some additional complimentary treats (top of the photo), including a can of Calpico, green tea, fruit, chocolates, and candy. I ordered the following: -Chirashi ($24.95): This was by far our favorite. It came with a variety of fish including salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. All of the fish was extremely fresh and the portion was enormous. -California roll ($8.95): This roll surprisingly came with fish eggs on top. I thought that was a nice touch because it elevated the California roll. -Rainbow roll ($15.95): This roll also came with fish eggs on top. This was also tasty and filling. There were complimentary sides that came with each box of food: edamame, seaweed salad, and crab salad. Each side was so tasty, especially the crab salad. With the box of rolls, the owner also included four pieces of the crab salad roll. Overall, this restaurant really goes above and beyond to make sure you are full and happy. I truly appreciate this place, and will recommend friends to come check this out!

The interior was too dark, almost made me think it was closed. With some doubt, I ordered a salmon roll to go, but the owner was very kind and the roll was very delicious. All fresh ingredients and well prepared with many small side dishes and even small snacks! Nice place for a lunch

After years of COVID-19 we finally can dine in with Huisan. The sashimi plate is made of the freshest and tastiest fish. Sushi rolls are fabulous. Huisan is running the place by himself, but his attention to detail and quality of service are above all other restaurants. The restaurant reminded us of our recent visit to Japan. Small and intimate ambiance. While Hanaya is open for in person dining I recommend you call first to confirm they are open as he closes if there are no customers. Takr out orders are always welcome and are of the finest quality.

Best sushi place ever . Super high quality and delicious food. Generous portions, more than fair prices. And amazing customer service and ambiance. The owner does everything on his own and puts his all into it. This place is definitely worth checking out.

Nigiri plate, super fresh and extremely filling!

It's a small place and run by one person, but it's 100% worth it. Prices are extremely reasonable, portions are generous and then some. I've been there twice and the first time, the owner brought out a free plate of fruit, and the second time when I ordered the nigiri plate, I got 4 extra nigiri. It reminds me of the small sushi bars I would go to in Japan. As it is run by one person, it may take a little bit more time to get your food, but it's well worth it.

One of my favorite go-to sushi places in San Diego! I actually discovered this place when searching Yelp for a sushi place to celebrate my new job. It did not disappoint. Not only is it great pricing, but the service is absolutely wonderful. The owner is so kind and generous. I always walk away smiling and feeling so much lighter after my interactions with him. He even gave us some flowers! The meals came with some drinks (green tea, Capico, water), edamame, seaweed salad, crab meat mix, and candies. The portions are also so generous. I've gone here about 3 times now and below are my go-to orders! Baked Mussels (a favorite of my parents) Orange Caterpillar -I love salmon Snow Caterpillar -I love white escolar! But, be mindful of the spiciness. The spicy tuna can be pretty spicy Baked roll -scallop and langostino. Really rich and yummy Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

This family owned establishment has a homey vibe and energy to it. It smells of incense and feels of comfort. I highly recommend supporting this small business. You won't come across an experience like this often so it's worth checking out.

Just had a to go order from this place and the owner is amazing. You can tell by the initial conversation that this person cares about the food he makes and the people who come in. The food was some of the freshest sushi we've ever had. He gave us some extra drinks and candy's which were not expected and the portions were generous to say the least. My gf introduced me to this place because she goes here for her lunch and it was definitely worth the drive. Would definitely go out of my way to come eat here again.

    California Roll & Miso soup

Hanaya Sushi Cafe is excellent. Huisan creates amazing rolls all by himself. I ordered the CA roll and it came with a small portion of seaweed salad, steamed soybeans, daikon radish, and a beautifully cut orange for desert. Miso soup was ordered as an extra item was delicious. Fast service and very homey interior.

Best sushi and service hands down! I live in la and still try to come eat here whenever I'm in sd. Been here a good amount of times now and I can't express how nice the owner is and how helpful he is with taking orders and sometimes staying after closing to wait for me to pick up the food. He always provides small side dishes and even fruit, and is so welcoming. Utmost respect for his work ethic and hospitality. Food is 10/10 highly recommend the scallop sushi and caterpillar roll. I order those two every time.

Cant remember what they're all called but they were all good and would 20/10 order them again. Ambiance was also wonderful! But what made this place even better was the staff. We were promptly sat down upon arriving. Servers frequently checked on us and were all so nice. But what really stood out was their empathy. Like i said, my son knocked out. He's 5. He woke up as we were leaving. by the time we figured out what was really upsetting him (he wanted to stay there and eat and wanted the table we were on), we have gotten out of our table and obviously the table was then cleaned for the next guests. So basically my lil one cried, took him to the bathroom bec unfortunately we dont get everything we want just bec we cry. So we went into the bathroom for him to cry his feelings out and be ready to get out. Was he loud? Absolutely. Was i embarrassed? Yes. But it was a lesson he needed to learn and i didnt want my discomfort to hinder that. (Mind you the bathroom was in the middle of the stairs lol midway the lower and the upper floor). So was i ashamed to get out? Yes. But the staff, so empathetic. So nice about it. Told me i didnt need to apologize and that they get it. And that made me feel better as a mama who walked out of there carrying a 5 year old out their door. No judgy stares. Just smiles and understanding eyes. So july 18 2026, 4-5pm staff, you are all so amazing and we truly appreciate it. We hope to be back again when in the area.

Omakase: Omakase 20 pieces at $180. It's a great price, but in my head there had to be a catch to it. The starter and appetizer started out strong. Everything (fish) were all fresh, so when the nigiri course started that's when everything went south. The nigiri that chef served was really small and it's not your standard size nigiri .There's barley any shari ( sushi rice) and fish. If felt like I was sampling each nigiri. There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

The music is a bit on the loud side, but you can still have a chat with a group. I ordered the Akira Back Pizza, Mango Bongo Roll, and Super Spider Roll. Akira Back Pizza was my favorite, as the crunchy chip base and truffle drizzle made it extremely craveable. The rolls were pretty good too, and they use real crab! By the way, Lumi's AI answering service says they do not do take-out, but they do. Their receptionist is difficult to reach to confirm, but I have ordered take-out from their bar without any issues. It's just that they may not be able to allow call-ins for to-go orders.
