Shrimp Tempura Roll (bottom left). All other items were complementary!

Wow! First time coming to Hanaya Sushi and to be honest, I was a little skeptical of this tiny dark hole in the wall. But interacting with the owner totally changed my perspective! What a genuinely generous and kind person! The owner runs this business by himself and puts so much care in his food. I only ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll but it was great. And look at all the complimentary goodies he gave! I will definitely come back to this support local small business. One peice of advice, call in ahead of time to place your order. As mentioned, he runs the business by himself and fulfills his orders by himself. The Bake Seafood Roll takes ~45 mins to fulfill and all other rolls ~10. Have patience for his kind soul

This place is a hidden gem when you are craving sashimi or sushi. I placed an order over the phone, and was quoted 25-30 minutes. Right when I got there, the food was already ready before the time was up. The owner chatted with me and also kindly gave some additional complimentary treats (top of the photo), including a can of Calpico, green tea, fruit, chocolates, and candy. I ordered the following: -Chirashi ($24.95): This was by far our favorite. It came with a variety of fish including salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. All of the fish was extremely fresh and the portion was enormous. -California roll ($8.95): This roll surprisingly came with fish eggs on top. I thought that was a nice touch because it elevated the California roll. -Rainbow roll ($15.95): This roll also came with fish eggs on top. This was also tasty and filling. There were complimentary sides that came with each box of food: edamame, seaweed salad, and crab salad. Each side was so tasty, especially the crab salad. With the box of rolls, the owner also included four pieces of the crab salad roll. Overall, this restaurant really goes above and beyond to make sure you are full and happy. I truly appreciate this place, and will recommend friends to come check this out!

The interior was too dark, almost made me think it was closed. With some doubt, I ordered a salmon roll to go, but the owner was very kind and the roll was very delicious. All fresh ingredients and well prepared with many small side dishes and even small snacks! Nice place for a lunch

Best sushi place ever . Super high quality and delicious food. Generous portions, more than fair prices. And amazing customer service and ambiance. The owner does everything on his own and puts his all into it. This place is definitely worth checking out.

After years of COVID-19 we finally can dine in with Huisan. The sashimi plate is made of the freshest and tastiest fish. Sushi rolls are fabulous. Huisan is running the place by himself, but his attention to detail and quality of service are above all other restaurants. The restaurant reminded us of our recent visit to Japan. Small and intimate ambiance. While Hanaya is open for in person dining I recommend you call first to confirm they are open as he closes if there are no customers. Takr out orders are always welcome and are of the finest quality.

Nigiri plate, super fresh and extremely filling!

It's a small place and run by one person, but it's 100% worth it. Prices are extremely reasonable, portions are generous and then some. I've been there twice and the first time, the owner brought out a free plate of fruit, and the second time when I ordered the nigiri plate, I got 4 extra nigiri. It reminds me of the small sushi bars I would go to in Japan. As it is run by one person, it may take a little bit more time to get your food, but it's well worth it.

This family owned establishment has a homey vibe and energy to it. It smells of incense and feels of comfort. I highly recommend supporting this small business. You won't come across an experience like this often so it's worth checking out.

Just had a to go order from this place and the owner is amazing. You can tell by the initial conversation that this person cares about the food he makes and the people who come in. The food was some of the freshest sushi we've ever had. He gave us some extra drinks and candy's which were not expected and the portions were generous to say the least. My gf introduced me to this place because she goes here for her lunch and it was definitely worth the drive. Would definitely go out of my way to come eat here again.

    Flowers from the owner :')

One of my favorite go-to sushi places in San Diego! I actually discovered this place when searching Yelp for a sushi place to celebrate my new job. It did not disappoint. Not only is it great pricing, but the service is absolutely wonderful. The owner is so kind and generous. I always walk away smiling and feeling so much lighter after my interactions with him. He even gave us some flowers! The meals came with some drinks (green tea, Capico, water), edamame, seaweed salad, crab meat mix, and candies. The portions are also so generous. I've gone here about 3 times now and below are my go-to orders! Baked Mussels (a favorite of my parents) Orange Caterpillar -I love salmon Snow Caterpillar -I love white escolar! But, be mindful of the spiciness. The spicy tuna can be pretty spicy Baked roll -scallop and langostino. Really rich and yummy Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

    California Roll & Miso soup

Hanaya Sushi Cafe is excellent. Huisan creates amazing rolls all by himself. I ordered the CA roll and it came with a small portion of seaweed salad, steamed soybeans, daikon radish, and a beautifully cut orange for desert. Miso soup was ordered as an extra item was delicious. Fast service and very homey interior.

I ordered take out over the phone and my food was ready in 25 minutes. Service was very friendly and warm. The quality of the food was incredible. The attention to detail and flavors exceeded my expectations. - Orange Ginza Line speciality roll - This roll is a must have and my favorite item that I ordered. There was so much flavor between the salmon, orange slices, and garlic aioli. Everything blended together like a unique piece of art. - Rainbow Roll - solid and what you'd expect. Not my favorite item of the day. - Sea dragon roll - delicious: the attention to detail with the avocado slices to the perfect grilled eel this one blended together really nicely. - Poke Bowl - I ordered 3 scoops of Salmon (extra $5 for the third scoop) - this was really delicious. The salmon marinade blended together nicely with the flavored rice. Una Don - the unagi pieces had the perfect smoky and sweet flavor blend. One of the best unagi pieces I've ever had. Overall five stars for the quality of food, creativity especially with the Orange Ginza Line, and service. I will caveat that the portion sizes are quite small for the price point. I was out the door $118 for this meal for two. I'd recommend ordering like you would at an elevated dining restaurant. Try a bowl and a couple of rolls per person and splurge a little. The interior of the shop is clean and minimal and on the smaller side. Be warned there was no AC on a warm summer day when I came. These are trade offs I'm willing to overlook for an incredible quality sushi experience. I am already craving another Orange Ginza Line roll: it is calling my name!

Thanks to a Yelp recommendation, and always on the hunt for quality sushi in San Diego, I had to get my husband and I a reservation. Today, a weekday, we snagged a reservation for noon. I highly recommend a reservation because even within a few minutes of sitting down there were other diners showing up and service picked up quickly. However, I'm sure you could always grab a seat at their sushi bar. One aspect of dining today that we both took notice of was their attention to detail - especially in service. We greatly appreciated that our table had a sign with our name and reservation at the table - just giving that they were prepared to receive us and made it a little extra special. Another note is their attention to swapping out our sake glasses as we changed types of sake during our meal. Oftentimes you're served a new drink and expected to use the same glass. For us, we appreciated a new glass. Regarding our dining experience - no notes. Chef 100% knows what they're doing and I feel I would be ridiculous to even begin to critique their approach and service. I love that omakase have become more approachable for diners and it is something I enjoy trying whenever visiting a new sushi restaurant. I feel it can be a great opportunity to try a little bit of everything Chef has to offer. For today, I chose their midi omakase option and my husband tried their chef's choice of hand-roll set. Trying to keep this review to an appropriate length, well, there just isn't enough I could write that could put into words the enjoyment we had. So, if you're still with me, I highly recommend Moment Sushi. We will definitely be dining again!

It's clean- busy (which is a good sign)- automatically greeted at the door. Staff was really nice and attentive. I sat at the bar, the server suggested to try the Hand-roll set. You get to pick 5 for $36. It looked like a popular item cuz I looked around and a lot of folks had this or a lunch special set. It was tasty and so worth it. The fish was excellent and fresh. Luckily, because we were having a really late dinner and it was about a hour before closing, there was no wait. Their Tonkatsu Chashu ramen is so delicious. We walked into a clean, functional space with a straightforward ramen shop feel that keeps the attention on the food rather than the décor. The atmosphere is unpretentious and efficient, the kind of place where you come for the bowl in front of you rather than the surroundings, and the steady flow of customers speaks to the quality coming out of the kitchen. The ramen is the main highlight, especially the noodles and broth combination. The noodles have a great texture with a firm bite that holds up well in the soup, which makes a noticeable difference in the overall bowl. The tonkotsu ramen delivers a rich and savory broth, creamy without being heavy, paired with toppings like chashu and soft-boiled egg that add layers of flavor and texture. The spicy miso ramen adds more depth and heat without losing the comforting qualities of a classic ramen bowl, and the heat level is balanced well enough that it does not overpower the other components. The tantanmen and black sesame ramen are also good options if you want something a little different from the standard ramen lineup, each offering a distinct flavor profile that still feels rooted in the traditional style. The toppings help round out the experience, with the chashu being one of the stronger parts of the meal. The pork is tender and flavorful, with a nice sear that adds a subtle smokiness, and it pulls apart easily without being mushy. The soft-boiled egg is cooked to that perfect jammy consistency, and the seasoned egg adds a richness that ties the bowl together. The karaage is another popular addition, with crispy pieces that work well as a side alongside the ramen, offering a contrast in texture and a break from the broth-heavy main. There are also options for different preferences, including vegetarian choices and customizable add-ons, which gives the menu a bit more flexibility than some ramen spots. One thing to plan for is the wait. The restaurant uses a waitlist system, and it can get busy during peak dinner hours, so joining the list ahead of time is the best way to avoid standing around. Once seated, the service is generally efficient and the food comes out quickly, which helps keep the experience moving without feeling rushed. The staff handle the flow well, and the turnover moves at a pace that matches the casual, no-fuss style of the restaurant. Menya Ultra is one of those ramen spots where the quality of the noodles and broth makes it worth the visit. The combination of authentic flavors, well-executed bowls, and a focused menu makes it a strong choice for anyone looking for a satisfying ramen meal in San Diego. It delivers the kind of bowl that feels both comforting and intentional, the sort of meal that stays with you after the last spoonful.
