Aloha guys and gals! I decided to place a delivery order at Pokeland restaurant. I wanted to try their Poke bowl and was glad I did. I requested a base of brown rice and salad, added ahi tuna, coconut lemongrass salmon, shrimp, edamame, mango, pineapple, ginger, green onions, seaweed salad, furakake and sesame seeds. All of the ingredients were fresh and the citrus ponzu elevated the fish and shrimp giving it a tangy, refreshing flavor. We have been coming here quite awhile for poke, as they give generous portions and the prices are decent. It's usually not very busy (it's located inside a shopping area), it's very clean and there is ample seating inside. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. I usually build my own poke bowl with 1/2 rice and 1/2 salad as a base, salmon and tuna (the small size is enough for me), and almost all the toppings; they pile on all the rice, fish and toppings to an impressive height. My husband's favorite is Triple Threat, it has 3 kinds of tuna and the seared tuna is pretty good. Once in awhile it seems like the fish isn't as fresh as it could be (and a bit flavorless), but otherwise the food is usually very tasty (they also have a variety of sauces). Pokeland was one of the earlier arrivals to the scene when it took over one of the internal suites in the Village at Mira Mesa. Judging from the foot traffic at the neighboring vendors in this foodie corridor, it was not one of the busier places especially when there's an AYCE sushi business on the front corner. I had finished visiting a boba tea shop across the way when I decided to pop in and support Pokeland as the only customer at the time. There were around half a dozen tables for seating in a well-kept dining room. The left menu screen featured five signature poke bowls. The center and right screens listed the bowl sizes and components for building your own poke bowl. A small bowl (two protein scoops) cost $13.99, a regular bowl (three protein scoops) cost $15.99, and a large bowl (five protein scoops) cost $18.99. The prices seemed fair considering some spots charge well over $20 for their large bowls. I picked the Tsunami which was one of the signature bowls. The preset ingredients included three types of tuna... regular ahi, seared tuna, and albacore. White rice, imitation crab, avocado, green onion, furikake, seaweed salad, sesame seeds, yum yum sauce, and eel sauce made up the rest of the contents. The seared tuna stood out because of the smokey flavor. The rest was pretty standard but was filling for a regular size bowl. read more

This is probably my favorite poke shop in SD because they give SO much food. Toppings, fish, rice. When I ordered the small, they topped on so much of everything I asked for that the height of the final product was almost twice that of the bowl. I had $50 in expiring GrubHub money so I ordered $50 worth of poke bowl from here as takeout...Let's just say that even though free food usually tastes more delicious, that was not the case at all for the poke bowls we got. We actually threw them away without finishing, and we are NOT a household that throws away food. We ordered 3 regular bowls: -Salmon/salmon/spicy tuna with garlic ponzu and white rice -Salmon/salmon/spicy tuna with pokeland sauce and white rice -Seared tuna/scallop/shrimp with pokeland sauce and white rice The spicy tuna was this mix of unappetizing mashed fish. The salmon, seared tuna and scallop were flavorless. I think theoretically the dish could have been saved by the sauces but we could not taste any garlic ponzu or pokeland sauce in any of the bowls. Maybe the sauces were forgotten, and we are unfairly judging the bowls. But the dishes we got were basically just flavorless fish with flavorless rice. The only thing that earned this place its stars was ambiance (very clean restaurant in a convenient location that has tons of free parking) and very friendly/professional service from the cashier. read more

As delicious and generous as this place is, every single time I have eaten here, I've gotten a stomach bug that has me on the toilet for too long. I'm not sure how fresh the fish is. I don't believe I have any sort of intolerance to any of the ingredients as I've been eating sushi and poke for as long as I can remember, never being afraid to try anything new. There is a couple to choose from when you are craving poke bowls in the Mira Mesa area. This one is one of my go-to places. They are very generous in their serving portions, so well worth the price you pay. Down fall is that there isn't a lot of topping selections like other places have. BUT they have what I want, so I am okay with it. I wish that nori to put on top. The avocado/guac was not fresh. It was mushy and brown, but I know its looked fresher on other days I have purchased from here. The pokeland house sauce was just okay. I felt it didn't have a lot of taste this time around, but I got a side of spicy mayo that helped out the flavor. I always get brown rice, so have yet to try to eat my bowl any other way here or any poke bowl restaurant! For fish....I got Tuna and Salmon. Those are my go-to fish, too! Pieces were small, but I thought there was a good amount. Customer service....yikes where do I start. Okay....I know its hard to hire the perfect employee, but you really do need to work hard on screening and training these high schoolers or young adults that you hire. Talking to each other is great, but don't do it while there is customers you are attending to. Nothing you have to say to each other is more important then dealing with the customer who just walked through that door and is going to pay your hourly wage AND tip. I tipped $2 this time around, but not sure I would tip at all from this point on. Do your job plus more....if you don't like it then get the hell out and make room for someone who is worthy of that position. To tell you the truth not sure where you could go to with job ethics like that. Pokeland....I like your bowls, so please just work on hiring more mature employees. The sour face girl in the green sweatshirt and the super long unhygienic white acrylic nails was so unfriendly. As a nurse, I know for a fact her nails are harboring a ton of bacteria so having them on as a food preparer/server is quiet disgusting. She had a nasty face the whole time while saying maybe 3 words to me. Way to make your paying customers feel welcome. On the other hand, the gentleman with the long-ish hair who was working with her was very friendly, helpful, and had a great attitude. I can't say for them to train their staff better because that guy was doing something right. The food was good as usual. The salmon, seared tuna, and scallop all tasted so sweet and fresh. My friendly helper guy put together a tasty sauce at his discretion and it tasted great in the bowl. Prices are good for the huge portions. I tried my luck and was able to get a fresh, hefty, 2-scoop bowl for under $18 (with tip). The service was friendly and quick as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see my order being filled to the brim and packed into the bowl. Some say quality over quantity, but I was able to get both here! I wasn't sure if I was simply hungry or the food was good, but I downed it all without getting a good picture of it :'). I will say there were a few dry pieces of albacore, but the rest of the serving was fine. There is indoor seating but I ordered to-go. Poke Etc. in National City is my usual go to, but I was far and craved the So-Cal style poke bowl. This place is a pass for me. I'm used to eating poke from poke 1/2 so having that as my comparison has led me to this 2 star review. I would not come here again. There's a lot of room for improvement though, so maybe this review will help. Pokeland's fish and ingredient quality seemed to be lacking that element of freshness that I look for in eating raw fish. The different fishes/proteins looked dry and dull while the person was scooping it into the bowl. In terms of pricing, it's still a bit cheaper than poke 1/2 but the value isn't there. For one, the scooper for the crab meat is so small and it was also really dry looking. At poke 1/2 they let you do 1.5 scoops for free and the crab meat is always delicious. They also charge extra for some stuff here which is kinda lameee. One pro was that they have pineapple and mango here, which is a nice addition that I haven't seen in other places. Also, my rice was really soggy but also undercooked. The texture was really unappetizing so it was sad. Overall, I was really sad eating this bowl cause it just did not taste good and I felt like my money was wasted. read more
