Still one of my favorite sushi spots with great prices! It's been a while since I've come to Katana but it was just as amazing as I remember. I am obsessed with their house salad dressing. The salad is a large portion and a great way to start a meal. We shared a few different specialty rolls like the hole in one (no rice) roll, sunshine roll, jojo roll, and the yoyo roll. All the rolls were delicious and offered so many different flavors. The favorite was the sunshine roll! Very decent mom and pop neighborhood Japanese and sushi restaurant with a wide selection and all the standard offerings. Service is good and attentive, and this place has been here a long time for a reason and seems to have established a good following. Came here for lunch. Ordered the lunch deluxe combo with ton katsu and spicy tuna roll. Overall it was okay. Miso soup missing from picture. The lunch combo was good but the ton Katsu had a odd taste to it. Everything else was fine. My friend ordered 2 rolls and they were huge. I didn't see any happy hour menu but I noticed it referenced on here. Service was quick but almost too quick like they wanted us to leave. It wasn't crowded, it was slow. It's dim lighting in an already dark colored room. Overall, it's not bad but it wasn't the greatest either. Used to love coming here with the kids when they were younger... We ordered takeout tonight and something tasted off. I took a closer look at my Rainbow Roll and realized the albacore had clear signs of spoilage -- slimy, bloody, with a horrible smell and even worse texture. I can't believe this was served to me. By the time I got home and opened the box, it was too late to return it, which makes this even more disappointing. I've been coming here for years and I've always loved the food but was really disappointed today. I came in and ordered salmon nigiri. I ordered three orders of it and I got maybe a dollop of rice. The sashimi is frozen, they microwaved chicken breast and poured teriyaki sauce on it, the karaage is really a katsu, the rice sticks to the roof of your mouth, the gyozas are really just egg rolls, the spicy mayo is not spicy, just orange mayo, and the miso soup was okay, but too much greens barely any tofu. Our favorite part of the restaurant was the water and the tempura shrimp, but we prefer Costco tempura shrimp. The lady there was really nice though. read more

Flavorless and just overly battered. Didn't taste anything but super crunchy batter. - Mixed tempura - Again, this was flavorless. I'm not sure if it's the fried items that just weren't good, but I didn't enjoy this either. - Gyoza - Another item I love to order. These were just meh. - Dragon roll - Hubs thought this was ok. (I think he was just hungry and settling). This was beyond basic. Overall I really didn't enjoy this meal at all. It was late and if I had an option, I would've reordered everything, and not the same items. That's bad. Could've been a bad batch, but I don't think that's the case here. 2nd time here. Came right when they opened at 5:00 before going to a play at La Jolla Playhouse. Erik seated us right away in a nice booth. This is a casual place with TV's up to watch sports if you want to. Their dine in specials are fantastic. You get a discount for dining in. I ordered Inari which is a soybean pocket filled with rice. You get two for $5.50. I also had the Ocean Beach Roll. I loved it. Tempura shrimp, crab, cream cheese, avocado and seared albacore with crunchy flakes. I get mine rolled in soy paper instead oh nori for $1 extra. I loved it. My husband had the jojo roll which has spicy tuna, cucumber, salmon, albacore and avocado. He really enjoyed his. I didn't taste it as I don't like nori unfortunately. We ended with a cappuccino macaron ice cream sandwich. It is so delicious. Solid sushi spot! Can't say enough about the Oceanside roll! Quite possibly one of my favorite sushi rolls of all time. The Katana bomb roll is also delicious and comes with small tempura shrimp bites. Super filling and delicious. Perfect amount of heat. Alaskan roll is basic but tasty. They made us wait even though there weren't many people eating at around 6:00 p.m. Ordered a wide variety of items to include multiple appetizers, ramen, sushi rolls, chirashi bowls, etc. Overall the food was average and the service was adequate. The chirashi and udon bowls come with miso soup and a large generous side salad. The music in the restaurant was laughable. Never heard "New York, New York" followed by Italian mandolin ambiance background music in a Japanese restaurant run by Koreans. Not my first choice to go to for Japanese food, but adequate if you are in the area and don't want to drive. read more

Friendly waitstaff, delicious rolls, and our favorite is the sushi boat. They have four versions, and we've tried A and B to feed a family of four with 1-2 appetizers.
