Beer prices are OK with a decent selection. The food is really the reason to go, though. The nachos are great, the burgers are tasty and there are several other cheap options on the menu. There are some nicer items too, but I haven't spent more than $10 on anything yet. Visiting Quincy from Connecticut for a Drum and Bugle competition at nearby Veterans Stadium, we took a short walk down the avenue to see what we could find for dinner. Other than a pizza joint and some fast food joints, we poked our heads inside Hancock's and find a brightly lit bar, with a bunch of TV's, and some outstanding looking food on the tables we passed by. Our decision to stay was an easy one, though it may not have looked that way from the outside. We had three adults and a young teenage girl with us, and we were very comfortable with her dining there, and even more so after finding the food was outstanding. Among our dinners were Fish and Chips, Chicken Marsala, Roast Beef grinder, and a house special burger. All were delicious, including what was referred to as award winning NE clam chowder. One in the group had recently attended the Tall Ship festival in Boston, and though he preferred my chowder to any in their contest, he agreed with my finding that Hancock's was excellent and worthy of the label. We enjoyed the beer choices, martini and excellent service from the staff. Our server was Sara, and she too was outstanding, very knowledgeable of the menu, bar features, timely, and very pleasant. She noted that everything is fresh, not frozen, and we certainly enjoyed everything that we ordered. We have friends in Quincy, and will certainly share our experience with them. We just may be back again next year for this event, and it will not be a surprise if we return the Hancock's. read more

The Hancock Tavern is a really great place to have a few drinks if you live in the Quincy area. My friends and I go there all the time for Sox and Patriots games, as they have 8 or 9 plasma/LCD TVs around the entire bar, and they play the sound from the games over the loud speakers. Their food is just your average bar food, nothing terribly exciting but it'll get the job done if you're hungry and the kitchen is open. They have a decent variety of beers on tap, and also are pretty heavy handed when making drinks. If you're going out with a bunch of friends, and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, the "Draft Vessel" is 160 ozs of Bud or Bud Light for $25, definitely one of the best deals you can get. There's plenty of parking, and its usually not terribly crowded inside. I'd definitely recommend you show up early for Sox and Pats games, though, as it fills up pretty quickly. read more

For a while the Hancock and I didn't get along, but we've become friends again. I started going here about 3 years ago because its about a 5 minute walk from my house, sometimes the service was awesome and sometimes I'd walk in there drunk and walk out sober because the service was slow. This place is what drove me to make my neighborhood bar Murphy's (which closed back in July to my surprise). Because Murphy's closed, and I'm not a big fan of a majority of the Quincy Center bars, I decided to give it a 2nd chance. I must say that since I've started going back, the service has gotten much better and the buffalo chicken nachos are exactly how I remembered them. It's a perfect place to knock back a couple beers, watch sports, have some food, and play some KENO (if you're into gambling). Glad I gave it a 2nd chance. I've been here once and I think I already have a good impression on it. Even though I live in walking distance of the place, it was my first time ever. It is your regular town bar. Wood everywhere with flat screens for sports and a good bar. My friend and I went in for some lunch and we decided to go to the back where the outdoor dining is. I recommend not being out there again. For one, it was not a pretty place to eat, though they did have a tv outside which was cool. However, staff and other customers use it for smoking breaks. Food service was slow as it took a long time for food to come out, even when the place was not busy with about three waitresses. We both ordered burgers and fries so we thought it would be quick. Guess not. Food itself was good. Good portions with great prices. Burgers were huge and a bit hard to eat, but hey, its a bar burger. What do you expect? Wait staff themselves were nice. A bit inattentive, but nice when you do talk to them. Would I come here again? Well, I'm definitely sitting inside next time I do and I'll try the pizza because everyone says its really good there. I have been here several times because I live only a few minutes away. I haven't had a bad experience here yet, but it hasnt been spectacular either. It's a pretty comfortable place win big plasma TVs to enjoy the games. I usually get the steak tips, which are some of the best I have had. The boneless buffalo wings are pretty good too and they give decent portions. The burgers weren't that good (a bit dry and not much flavor) I've had better at other places. The service is pretty good, waitresses are always nice. I also got take out before and they fill up the whole takeout box. read more

Yes, its a local bar. Yes, its a mix of people from "the locals" to college frat boys to sports fans. Yes, it can be packed and loud during the games. But if you happen to catch it on a weeknight or during the day without a big game going on...youre in for a treat. The food is really above and beyond what you'd expect from a typical bar fair menu. The burgers are huge, with a great flame-broiled taste and really awesome potato wedges on the side. Buffalo wings are crispy and spicy with just enough sauce, but not too much to make them soggy, and the chicken to breading ratio is perfect. I wouldnt recommend the chicken quesadilla too highly though...it was very bland: white totilla, white mozzeralla cheese, white chicken breast, white sour cream...you ge the point. Not my favorite. But their other steller sandwiches more than make-up for their lack of knowledge in mexican soul food. In addition to the burgers and the buffalo tenders, definately try the steak tip sandwich and the turkey/cranberry wrap. Its making my mouth water just thinking about them!!! read more

Your experience really depends on the night. I went there the first time and it was fine. Not crowded, steak tips were great. I went a few more times and they allow the trashy, fat b*stards at the bar to yammer on, make fun of people coming in and get as drunk and bellowy as they want without cutting them off- on a Wednesday night. It's a little too loud there if you're meeting up with friends. It's definitely kind of divey too. Sometimes hard to find a parking space too. The Fours is much better, even though it costs a bit more. You get what you pay for. read more

This is a pretty decent place to go if you live in the Quincy area and just don't want to hop on the subway to Boston. I've been here a few times, and both the food (french fries are great, as is the pizza!) and the drinks were served quickly and are reasonably priced. I definitely wouldn't seek out this place at all, but if you happen to live nearby (it's within walking distance from my place) it's not a bad place to go to relax after work and have a beer. read more

If there were negative stars this place would defintily deserve it! A group of us just went there for lunch and we had the worst service and food ever. To start off we walked in to a slummish looking guy on his cell phone on a personal call directing us to sit anywhere. You couldnt call the person back? The only table able to accomodate us was the one table he was sitting at gabbing away at his phone. He finally put two and two together and got up so we could sit down. The stench of beer in the place is overwhelming and nauseating. I kid you now, it took 50 minutes to get out food and we all got sandwiches,pasta...easy stuff to make!! The group that came in 20 minutes after us was served before us....HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE! When I finally received my food i began eating only to find a fruit fly crawling alllll over it!!! GROSS. Instantly lost my appetite. The server took it off the bill and handled the situtation very good. The only good part about that place was the served who was nice. read more

The servers are attentive and friendly despite the fact that this bar gets full pretty easily on a weekend. If you're looking to eat dinner as well, then you could do better. None of the food is bad. The Hancock was a really great place to go for a burger the best in Quincy. Now nothing has changed with the food but we were disgusted the other day with the t-shirt the bar tender had on. It was very offensive and of course all the middle aged old men at the bar thought it was great. I do not want to know the political persuasion of the bar tender. This sort of thing should be kept to himself. We left and I doubt we will be back. A table of people behind us was also disgusted at this. So I would like to remind the owner that half the people who go there do not have the bar tenders view and he should think twice about letting his staff where such a thing at work. read more

I went once in the summer. Ordered a gin and tonic. The chubby bartender girl took a while to make it. It came with no lime. When i asked for a lime she said " oh I didn't hear that you want a lime in that" . A gin and tonic ALWAYS gets a lime. I wont go back. read more

I am frequenter of the Hancock Tavern. The food is very good. Great salads, sandwiches, cheese burgers, steak, pizza, soup. Yes you get it. I like to food. You can eat here for the same price as ordering takeout from your local pizza place. The beer is cheap, but the place can get very crowded during sports games. The bathrooms are very nice and the bar atmosphere is very relaxed. Within the past few weeks they opened a patio out back which is nice. Watch out for the cheese fries(American cheese) and sometimes the tap beer isn't super cold. The bartenders are very attentive and have been there a long time but there is a high turnover rate for waitresses and so sometimes you get girls that aren't very experienced and seem a little out of their element when it gets crowded. Over all just a good place to go and relax and eat some good food. read more

There aren't enough superlatives to assign to this place. We just happened to drive by and decided to give it a try. Parking is on the street but this is a hidden treasure. Only 12 tables but four more on the outside patio in the back. The bar probably has as much seating as the rest of the tables. TVs everywhere. The cozy atmosphere is tavern like the name and it is seat yourself with one waitress. We started off with the best potato skins we had ever tasted. Prime rib was a plateful with the most savory au jus for $15.99 every day. The chef salad was big enough to feed the table with every meat imaginable. The Merrimount sandwich was an overstuffed pastrami and cheese. They offer a Tavern Table Keg of 128 ounces of Bud or Bud light. It isn't the best beer but it would be enough to satisfy a bunch of fans watching their favorite sport in every direction. The prices were really reasonable and the waitress was great. I think we will become regulars! read more
