This location recently opened up and there are a few comparable ice cream spots in the area, but does this make the cut? This location is situated on a busy Fremont Avenue aka 710 freeway. It is outdoor only next to a busy street, where the line can get long. The layout could improve by installing microphones/speakers to call out an available window as the customers are not attentive at all. Although they have a menu of what can be ordered, they could install an extra screen to play a video of what they offer for a visual presentation (Vegas like) or at a minimal a slow slide show. The outdoor tables are dirty and sticky. I usually opt to take my ice cream on a walk through Kohl's. There should be a general 30 minute to hourly check of their own tables. It is very important to me to have the employees care or present it to the customers that they do care about their work environment. The ice cream itself is very creamy. It is delicious and distinct from other nearby competitors. It is a definite must try, but it is expensive. Ice cream in general has become too expensive to take a family out. Handel's has been our go-to spot for ice cream, and so glad we no longer need to drive all the way to the Hasting Ranch area of Pasadena. Alhambra now has its own Handel's! 5 stars!!!!! My go-to flavors remain the Cherry Vanilla and the Black Cherry. Yes, there are so many other flavors to choose from but I'm a creature of habit, and I tend to stick to my favorites! Love that Handel's is also pretty budget friendly! You can never go wrong with the Sampler at $8 which comes with four generous scoops, perfect for sharing with a friend or two! Yes, the Sampler scoops were smaller compared to Pasadena when we went days after opening, but so glad the Sampler scoop sizes are now the scoops we are used to! Fosselman's Ice Cream is a historic, family-owned ice cream shop up the road less than a mile away, and it now it has a worthy competitor! Have always found Fosselman's too pricey and the staff not too friendly. Wishing that Handel's would also offer Fosselman flavors like Ube and Mango! They do have Taro, but I'm really hoping for more flavors like Ube and Mango in the future! Compared to Pasadena, there's definitely more outside seating in Alhambra. Fosselman's has some competition. Fosselman's has been my go to for affordable, handcrafted, high quality ice cream in Alhambra, but Handels is giving it a run for its money. Value: - A small at Handels is three stacked scoops that look pretty large and give the feeling that you are getting more for your money. I love the ice cream here so, so much! Unlike many ice cream shops these days, they don't offer samples to try. The first time I came, I got a waffle cone with two scoops. It was amazing, but it was a bit too much for me. I came back a second time and got the 4-flavor sampler instead, which was a great choice for $8+. This is the newest location near me and it's much closer to home, we used to travel to Pasadena to get our ice cream fix but now we can literally drive down the street. Anyone whose been a customer of this establishment before, KNOWS that it has its own good vibes that attract people all over for its delicious-ness and always friendly staff. This new location is no different and carries the same standard. We went at a good time too because it wasn't crowded and there was hardly a few people ahead of us. The graham ice cream was interesting but the chocolate honey comb combination was perfect. I like that the ice cream isnt too sweet and for a small size, the portions were enormous. So glad Handel's finally opened up close to us! My husband and I had been hearing good things about them and decided to check it out, and it did not disappoint! We both went with the vanilla with Oreo on our first visit - he got a medium waffle cone and I got a small cup. Fair warning: the medium is NO joke since my husband was not prepared for how stacked it was LOL. It was a very generous portion, which honestly just adds to the value :D What we loved most was the Oreo chunk situation since every bite had a solid amount of Oreos mixed in, which felt satisfying rather than like they were rationing it out. 3.5 out of 5 stars I ordered a medium cup and I also noticed that the prices seemed to have increased. I looked at menu photos of other locations, so it seems that the prices have increased across locations, not just this one. This is my first time at the Alhambra location and the medium was $6.95, and I noticed the 4 Scoop Sampler was $8. Previously, a medium cup was $6.75 and the 4 Scoop Sampler $7.50. Before tip. That being said, my medium didn't feel like a medium. It looked smaller and felt a lot lighter than the mediums I've had at other locations. A medium is around 4 scoops, 2 flavors. So 2 scoops of each flavor. It usually feels like a skyscraper, lol. But I felt like the one I received today was a mini tower. I know the scoops get smaller as they stack, but I felt like my top scoop was really small. It's also usually a challenge for me to finish a medium, and when I finished this one I still had room for more dessert. Service was good though. I arrived around 7:20PM (on a Thursday) and there wasn't a queue, so my order was taken right away. There are several windows, too, so the line should move fairly quickly (unless there are a lot of large parties). The young man who took my order was very sweet and when I requested my flavors to alternate, he said no problem and delivered. I did notice when I left around 7:45-8PM, more people came so a queue started to form and parking was busier. I've been going to Handel's recently for my special sweet treat when it's that time of the month. I like the Chocoholic Chunk. I'm still figuring out what serving is best. Sometimes I get a medium Chocoholic Chunk with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Last month I did the 4 scoop sampler because sometimes I want more flavors. Today, I got Chocoholic Chunk with Banana Cream Pie, but I felt like the Chocoholic Chunk overpowered the Banana Cream Pie. The Banana Cream Pie were also the smaller scoops. I've only tried their regular ice cream scoops, so I can't say anything about the milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches. There's a few official Handel's seating (the vibrant blue ones). I believe I saw two tables and several benches. But the good thing about this plaza is that since there are some other food establishments, there's a generous amount of public tables. Just like all the other locations that I've been to so far, this one is a standalone shop. There is no inside/indoor seating. They do have plenty of outdoor seating; chairs and patio tables. Packaging is available in the back. If ice cream is not your thing, somehow, they have different items like brownies and chocolate covered bananas. But also, just next-door is a Starbucks. There's also a Jamba Juice. I feel like there is a little bit of everything, something for everybody. Their portion sizes are more than plentiful. I feel like the best bang for your buck is going to be sharing a four scoop sampler with some friends. Although there may be a line at the windows, I can assure you they move pretty quickly.
