Recently moved from LA to Houston so I was excited to try a hand roll place (think Sugarfish) but was underwhelmed. The ambiance is stellar. It is very beautiful, and I loved sitting at the sushi bar. However, the hand rolls are overpriced and was starving after spending $$$. Wait staff was friendly but felt overbearing and pushy at times to continue ordering. When we inquired about the whiskey pricing menu, we were met with "oh, not really sure because we are still pricing the menu out and some of them are really pricey, lol." Words cannot describe how much I love this place! It's like a hidden little gem and honestly it feels bittersweet writing this review because I want to keep it a secret so it won't become mainstream! They specialize in hand rolls which happen to be my favorite type of sushi rolls. They had off-menu items for valentine's day and I really enjoyed it. If you aren't familiar with sushi or hand rolls and don't know where to start, I would recommend the 3 piece hand roll set to try out different rolls. I am pretty confident in choosing what type of rolls I want, so my favorites were the Fried Oyster, Yellowtail, and Toro Rolls. To have an enjoyable experience, make sure you pick rolls with fish or ingredients that you'd actually like! Their Lychee Martini was also the BEST lychee martini I've ever had. It's not too sweet and very well balanced. They use real lychee juice and no other lychee martini I've had can top theirs. Also, the staff and service were amazing! Because it's a small space and they're not bombarded with a bunch of customers like other sushi restaurants, they are able to pay close attention to you. I've felt taken care of throughout my experience as they constantly checked on me and refilled my water. Everything was well-kept and the restrooms were also clean. I always forget to take a picture of the food because it's so good and I get so excited to it!!! The drinks are on point, the bartenders are super friendly, the wait staff is amazing, and the food is top notch. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating in every sense of the word. Got to speak with the manager, Mandy, and she was super nice and sweet. They make every customer feel like they are the only ones in the room and that's hard to do because the place is usually packed. Even waiting for a table isn't inconvenient because they opened up a back area for the bar to wait at. I can't say enough good things about this place. The restaurant is kind of far to me, but I rather drive and sit in traffic and eat at Hando than 95% of the restaurants closer to home. If you have allergies, especially shellfish, don't come here. They don't give a fuck about you. Let's start with the good. The branzino is on point! Cooked with like a perfect char; smoky but not bitter. The rest of the rolls were so~so. Stands out were the scallop and crab rolls. Now the bad. As my wife and I sat down to eat, we were asked if we had any allergies, I told them I had a shellfish allergy, and the waiter acknowledged my statement. Looking at the menu, the items that offer the most value (the 4 and 5 piece sets) all contain shellfish, and have a strict no substitutions policy. I asked if they'd make an exception for my allergies. Our waiter asked senior staff and was told no substitutions for any reason, and I'd have to pick something else (more expensive/less bang for buck) from the menu. Luckily, we went during HRW, so they did have an option that can accommodate shellfish allergies, but that option isn't regular menu. All through the service, they would set rolls in front with little to no explanation of what it was. Or they would explain in tones you could barely hear over the noise of the crowd. If we didn't have the menus in front of us and didn't keep count, we'd have no what was what. The wait staff overall seems to not have a lot of experience; I asked our waiter for pickled ginger (a staple at any sushi place), and the waiter had no idea what I was talking about until I picked up my wife's untouched ginger to show him. Finally when our meal was over, a staff member who was not our waiter, set what appeared to be a little piece of cheesecake in front of us. No explanation, just "Here ya go, thanks for visiting." I took a bite, and when our waiter came back to us, I asked what it was. At that point, he let us know that it is was tamagoyaki, which contains shrimp. Mind you, the waiter knows I have a shellfish allergy, but no concern that I've clearly taken a bite of something with shrimp in it. At that point we decided it was time to leave. Now for the ugly. When we went to check out with the hostess up front, we told her what had happened. Her extent of concern was to let me know about Allervent at Walgreens. No genuine concern, no offers to rectify the situation. Thank God I don't have an anaphylactic reaction. Not that the restaurant staff would care. read more

You are directed by a very pleasant host to grab a dinner menu and golf pencil. Above are instructions on "How to Hando". We decided to do the "Handokase" 5 handroll selection. Super cute name, btw. Opted to start with a lil bite and some drinks before the Handokase experience begun. The chips and dip and fun and frickin fantastic too. All the kitchen staff cooks, sushi chefs, bartenders, host, owner lend a hand. It's a really unique experience to see how well everyone can transition from 1 roll to the other. Got to chat to the adorbs young lady who was the sushi chef at the time about japanese whisky's. She had a great attitude, made fantastic sushi, and had bright green hair! All while making sure shushi chef Man San was close by to confirm what a fantastic job she was doing. I ate her Toro handroll so fast I forgot to take a picture of it! Chef Michael brought out a couple extra goodies for us to try. I got a chance to taste the brussel sprouts dish that I could probably eat everyday. (Also eaten so fast I forgot to photograph it) my boyfriend thought it had a little too much sauce, but he rarely ever likes any sauce. Also not photographed is the parmesan shisito peppers and the oihitashi. Very fun modern takes on flavorful traditional dishes. The sauce for the oihitashi was such a unique flavor, it's hard to put it into words. Beyond a perfect toro roll, was a yellowtail, scallop, crab, and shrimp Katsu roll. Each was pretty darn epic! The bar was quite respectable and to be notes. Wonderful beer and sake list, fantastic cocktails, and an amazing liquor selection overall.
