If you're looking for some really good BBQ ....this is the place in the northeast. About an hour from southern Fairfield county in CT. Worth the trip to eat in or takeout. Staff were pleasant and very helpful explaining the menu. The atmosphere was clean with a really nice bar. I imagine on certain nights it's probably packed. Excellent brisket , turkey , ribs, wings with lots of options for sides. Apple baked beans , coleslaw, Mac and cheese, collard greens and corn bread. A real south experience. *Consider this review to be closer to a 2.5 and not a 3* To start with, the building is cool. Love the vibe and decorations inside. Nice whiskey bar w some rare bottles on the shelf. Service was fast and friendly. Bartender was fine. I got the brisket and wasn't impressed. I know you gotta expect fat but there was a LOT especially for the price. My wife wasn't impressed w her meal either. The BBQ sauce is just ok. Not enough options to spice it up. Cornbread was good. The highlight of the meal were the beans (with chunks of apple!) Delicious. Prices at the bar were ridiculous. Everything was about double or more what they should be / what I normally pay. That left me getting Buffalo Trace for $10 which is still sorta crazy when we can buy a bottle for $30-40 in my area. Stagg for $100 per pour??? My husband chose this spot because he was craving BBQ. He ordered the brisket with 2 sides and I ordered the smoked turkey. His meat was on the super fatty side and he was a little disappointed red in to. He loved their baked beans but the temp was like warm. The smoked turkey was good but the temp was also like warm. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and assisted with how to order. You choose your meat, meal and sides at the far counter, pay, and find your seat. We ordered a pound of brisket, a pound of pulled pork and a full rack of ribs with some sides. We decided to eat out by the picnic table and the same person that greeted us actually came out to see how we were doin - that was nice coz usually you get forgotten. Let me tell you, we were impressed at how tender and moist the meats were!!! - hard to do if you cooked them early and just sitting there and waiting to be served. We do eat at the other two BBQ places around the area and they can be dry. We did comment that it was a little under seasoned for our taste but nothing the sauce can't fix. This restaurant is relatively new in this area. There is ample parking, the place is clean and you can smell the smoker doing its thing when you enter. There is a full bar on the right side of the restaurant. You walk straight in and go to the counter to place your order. The waitress was really helpful and explained how the menu was laid out. Everything is ala carte here. I had the brown bag special: beef brisket sandwich, apple pie baked beans (the beans had baked apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon), banana pudding, and a can of pop. The brisket was really tender, and the bbq sauce was good. The banana pudding was good, too. This place caters also. Next time I visit, I will try another option on the menu. This restaurant is not cheap but the food is honestly so delicious! I love how they smoke the meats right in front of you, you can't get fresher than that! It is a bit confusing when you go inside how you are supposed to order. You go to the grill first to order your meats, then you go to the register to order your sides and you pay. Then you walk to another spot to order and pay for your alcohol. I think this should probably be streamlined a bit better but thankfully the staff is awesome! Everyone was kind and considerate. There was a bit of a mix up with my food, not a big deal at all but they were so nice and apologetic. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a cool vibe. It's open seating more like picnic style but it goes along with the theme. I ordered the wings and they were soo good! You get 6 wings for $9.50. A little pricey if you ask me but they were amazing! I've had the bbq sandwich prior to this visit and that was good as well. A small sides are $4.50 each. I ordered the the Thai Chili Cauliflower which was Bomb! Another awesome experience, the folks behind the counter were so gracious even though we came in only about 15 minutes before closing AND even threw an extra rib in when my son said how much he loved them. Really wanted to like this place but it was a hard no for my family and me. First the positives. The bar staff were very welcoming and the restaurant was spacious and clean. The negatives: at 6:50pm on a Wednesday night there were only 3 ppl in there when we arrived which should have clued us to what would ensue. There were 4 of us. We ordered 2 pulled pork sandwiches, one half rack of Ribs, and one order of smoked wings along with collard greens, Mac n Cheese, corn bread, and a slice of lemon raspberry cake. Although the restaurant was empty and one has to go the counter to order, it took us 15 minutes to just place the order. One person took the meat order and another person took the side orders and rang us up. But this second person was also taking phone orders, hence the wait. Meanwhile 2 employees at the bar are just standing there chatting. Apparently, it didn't occur to them to help their colleagues. ‍ We got our food within 10 minutes of ordering. The pulled pork sandwiches and cake were cold. The Ribs lukewarm. The sides and wings were appropriately hot. The pulled pork had ZERO seasoning. It was totally bland. The Mac n cheese was worst than Krafts. The greens were passable except for the hunks of hard but rather tasteless smoked meat in them. The cornbread was nothing special. The Ribs were not tender, but they weren't fatty either, so they would have been fine except for no seasoning. The BBQ sauce was the ABSOLUTE worse...it had clearly been watered down. I'm from the South. I know BBQ and all the sides.This wasn't it by a long shot. The cake might have been okay but it was cold. So we boxed up all food and gave it to a homeless guy at a light near to Walmart. This was the high point of our evening Seeing this poor soul smile. Pulled pork was cold and greasy. Ribs were chewy. I assumed the onions were pickled, and maybe they were supposed to be, but they were just....wet onions. No vinegar or sweetness, just....wet and strong onion flavor. The pickles themselves were pretty good. The sides and desserts were the saving grace - the apple pie baked beans LEGITIMATELY taste like apple pie filling. There were apples in the beans. The banana pudding was a little sweet for my taste, but it was good! The sweet tea was decent too. The guy that took our order/heated our food was super nice, the woman that we paid less so. Very spacious, family style layout with the generous bar and wide open parking lot. That's just the first impression. I got to say they got some very generous servings even of Texas style barbecue being handed out over at this place. Probably some of the best greens that I've ever had of the collard type. I hired this venue to cater a work event back in 2015 and really enjoyed the food. This was back at their old location at the ice skating rink. I recently used door dash for delivery which I will say was delivered very quick. I ordered Pulled pork, Brisket, Mac n Cheese and baked beans. Ok, here's the run down... the brisket cuts were top quality, moist, but lacked seasoning. The outside bark was really bland, no salt at all. Same thing for the pulled pork. There was a good amount of meat but the seasoning or rub was just not there. The Mac n Cheese and Beans were tasty, no issue at all. Lastly, the bbq sauce! I was hoping that the sauce would add some flavor and heat, instead it was extremely watery and did absolutely nothing. I hope that was a bad batch because a good sauce is the heart of a good bbq joint. Overall the meat cuts were top notch, just lacked flavor. Really terrible. I've been to some really great barbecue places all around the southeast, but I manage my expectations in New York, just like getting pizza in South Carolina. This was bad by any standard. Got takeout on a Friday night, a half rack of ribs, collard greens, Cole slaw, and corn bread. Came out to more than $30, which is high for barbecue. When I got there I waited on line for 5-10 minutes for a counter that had a giant "ORDER HERE" neon sign over it, only to be told that you pick up to go food at the bar. Seems weird but ok. Waited another 10 minutes to get my food from a bartender that seemed annoyed that I was picking up my order. Fine, it's a casual place, whatever. When I got home and opened the box that the ribs were in, I knew it was going to be terrible. They were covered in creasote, a black, bitter, oily substance that is a byproduct of a dirty smoker, not enough airflow, and/or smoking food with bad wood. Basically the stuff that builds up in your chimney. It ruins food and numbs your tongue when you eat it, and it's the mark of someone that has literally no idea what they're doing. The menu said St Louis style ribs, but I don't think they were any style, they didn't have any seasoning or sauce on them at all. Just pork and tar. Anyway, the sides are the best part, so who cares. But the Cole slaw was literally nothing, just raw cabbage with vinegar and sugar. It tasted like something you get as a free side at a chain restaurant. The corn bread was dry and bland even with butter on it, and the collards tasted pretty good, but they were full of sand and pork cartilage. The audacity that the owner of this place has to be selling a cookbook while serving this kind of food is crazy to me. I get it, we're in NY, there's not really any standards or competition for this kind of food around here, but if you're gonna do it this badly just don't even bother. read more

I've been coming here since they opened. The owners, and staff are amazing. The food, I cannot even begin to tell you how good everything on this menu is. I have eaten just about everything on their regular menu. Their brisket is my favorite. Cooked/smoked perfectly. I have never had better brisket anywhere else. The sausage links. It makes me feel like they care about me (the customer) As well. The food is real. It's good. It's cared for. I like it. I feel lucky to have this place in the town I work. Brother's is definitely better IMO, as far as local spots go (I still got a few others to visit in Beacon and the local area). I ordered some food here when they were set-up at an event in 2022. I believe it was a beef brisket sandwich. It COULD HAVE been good, has it not been 95% sauce, with 5% tough beef and .01% bread. I mean it was literally baptized in BBQ sauce. I'm all for sauce, I love it and it's essential for me when ordering a brisket or brisket sandwich, but I ended up with more of a mess than an appetite filled and it didn't live up to the hype. Soon as we arrived we were very kindly greeted by Ed (who may be the owner) asked us if this was our first time there then explained the menu way of different meats and sides which I thought was nice!. I am a HUGE bbq fan, and I have high standards LOL! ... We decided to try all the meat combo ( I love how they cut the meat in front of you) , So we ordered all except the turkey, it also comes with two sides, I got the Pork ribs with green beans & mac and cheese. The ribs and the brisket were full of flavor it was moist, tender & just melts in your mouth good; The green beans was amazing that alone can be a whole meal by itself packed with lots of meat and great flavor. The Mac and cheese was above average but nothing to rave about (because my husband makes the best Mac & Cheese LOL! ). My absolutely favorite has to be the beans, holy moly, I enjoyed it so much I ordered another one to go!, My only complaint was the corn bread it was very bland and under cooked. it definitely was not worth the price I paid, for the record in other BBQ joints the corn bread comes with your oder. We got recommended this place by someone working at the vintage emporium and Wow this is some of the best barbecue I've ever had! You can see where they cook everything outside and the minute you walk in you're hit with the aroma. It was easy to order and the guy making the plates handed me some meat over he counter to try as I waited. I liked that it was counter service because it was super quick. I got the pulled pork and when i tell you it MELTED in my mouth. My advice is to skip the mac and cheese and just go all in for the cornbread. Tried handsome Devil at a BBQ festival in Manhattan. They had a pulled pork sandwich from a whole hog roast as well as a pastrami sandwich. Both were good but I favored the pastrami sandwich. I've been a competitive smoker for close to 40+ years now and I have to say "Definitely one of the best BBQ places in the North East." The brisket was "melt in your mouth." Pulled pork was great. Ribs were very good but honestly a little over-smoked almost all ring ( I suspect that this is because great fresh thick ribs for smoking are getting harder to find.) Sides - Mac 'n Cheese excellent, Thai Cauliflower great, and the baked beans good ( a little too sweet for my personal liking.) The portions of food are more than adequate. The restaurant is beautiful, organized, and clean. The staff are helpful, cheerful and make you feel wanted. It reminds me a bit of Pappy's in St. Louis (certainly would give them a run for their money) and Lucella's in Asheville, NC. If there was one thing they could improve on it's to offer variations of sauces for those who want it on the side. But in the end an excellent BBQ house and definitely at least 4.5 stars ( but Yelp won't let me give the extra 1/2 star). We'll be coming back the Handsome Devil. read more
