Truly a great bid experience. I find it sad that people leave negative reviews simply because HandyMensch declined to quote their jobs--this is exactly what you want from a good contractor! Honesty. They know what they do well and to whom they can provide the most value. If they aren't a perfect fit, they will tell you instead of take the job anyway for a quick buck. Anyway, for those unsure, HandyMench handles complex/custom jobs end-to-end as a full service shop. This means they provide high end design work but also the due diligence with professional structural engineers. Arranging good tradesman for smaller jobs is tough--call around and try it yourself and you'll find substandard, unprofessional options. The best tradesmen do massive new construction or can afford to avoid frustrating homeowner interactions. Meaning, you'll need someone in the business they already have relationship with. Anyway, I could go on. I've had to learn a ton getting my remodel work done and wish someone filled me in before all that. The struggle is real. Basically, if you're overwhelmed with your project/renovation, just contact them and know you'll be in good hands. Peace of mind is priceless. Or...make the mistakes I did and suffer lol. read more

My husband and I would highly recommend HandyMensch. They remodeled our dining room/living room area by removing a load bearing wall, redoing the floors and crown molding, as well as putting in new outlets and light fixtures. They were great communicators and trustworthy as we were mostly gone during the construction. The whole process, including getting all the permits needed, was hassle free. Lenny and his team did an excellent job on a major kitchen remodel for us that involved lots of moving parts and special features, including installing a large La Cornue stove from France, a large wooden exhaust hood custom-made to match the stove, a tile mural, a large and heavy T-shaped island, a set of barn doors, and a large sink/workstation with two faucets. In addition, as part of this project, Lenny and his team remodeled our adjacent back entrance area from the garage, laundry room, and butler's pantry and updated our powder room. We knew the HandyMensch did great work because they've done several other projects for us over the years, including updating three full baths in our home and building a downstairs office/music studio. But the scale of our kitchen-plus remodel dwarfed these other projects, and I'm happy to say that Lenny and his team really met the challenge and delivered an incredibly beautiful and functional end result over a five-month timeline. My husband, who's an amateur chef, now even has a spacious appliance garage behind a beautiful barn door to store all his large kitchen tools, including a pasta maker, meat slicer, KitchenAide mixer, Cuisinart, air fryer, and his super-sized pots and pans, so that our beautiful counters can stay clean and clear. Lenny has real craftspeople on his team who care deeply about the quality of work they produce, and they are also some of the nicest, most work-with people you will ever meet. They are great problem solvers, too, who can think creatively and cleverly when things don't go exactly as planned. And they are clean! Our project started with the demolition of our old kitchen and laundry room -- the flooring, the cabinets, the appliances, everything came out, including part of a wall. They partitioned off the area where they were working and brought in air scrubbers to minimize the construction dust throughout the rest of the house, which we really appreciated. The remodel was done in early March, just in time for my son to bring five friends home from college in the Midwest to enjoy their spring break in DC. That really put the new kitchen to the test. We fed eight people around our new kitchen island/chef's table very comfortably, and the kitchen layout worked wonderfully on our homemade pizza night, providing ample space for all of us to make the pizzas on the top of the T-shaped island across from the stove, then top the pizzas on the sink/workstation that has inserts that turn it into extra counter/buffet space, and then eat the pizzas on the bottom of the T-shaped island that functions as the chef's table. It all flowed perfectly in the space! Overall, the result of this major remodel -- the new kitchen, laundry room, butler's pantry, and powder room -- exceeded even our high expectations. Took two days to decline a job. Seems though their site says they take mid sized jobs, they really mean larger jobs. Replacing everything in a kitchen except cabinets is too small. I feel like they get this comment a lot and should really look to explain what they do better. Replacing an large kitchen floor, countertops, remodeling space to fit a 48 inch range, re-doing lighting and installing new appliances fits what I would call a mid sized job, but to them I guess we just call a handyman. We are in process of a complete home renovation, and won't be considering handymensch for bigger projects, because we'd like to have someone we can work with on more than 1 project. read more

I was wondering why HandyMensch didn't have a higher rating. All of the bad ratings are about the proposal process. Not really what I'm most worried about when getting some work done, but to each his own. I had a small roof leak covered up our home's previous owner which burst through the wall amidst last summer's deluge. When we pulled some drywall we discovered the Top Cap and Header Board were rotted, black mold on the drywall plus who knows what else. Beyond my capabilities but not big enough for most construction/remodeling contractors. A contractor friend of mine recommended Lenny. Great recommendation! I had a 15' wall removed, temporary wall put in, old headers and top caps removed and replaced, drywall reapplied and room painted, plus they did some drywall repairs in my kitchen and painted. The area was cleaned up everyday and blocked off with a temporary plastic dust containment area. They spent an extra day working on the wooden floor because some tape had left a mark so they basically refinished the whole floor so the project would look good (even though the floor was all scratched up before they started). The employees were all great to work with. Professional, polite, and worked through the day. I didn't get multiple estimates as I had a good recommendation, so can't talk to pricing. I can tell you they came when they said they would for the price they proposed and did a top-quality job. I can't recommend them enough if you want some great work on projects beyond your DIY skills. read more

Tried to book in for what is actually significant work-- adjust one door, replace another and install a dog door, build a ramp for my dogs. got a call back 2 days (what?!?! first red flag) after talking to someone saying it wasn't "cost effective". so, someone else got those jobs, and a lot of other follow-on work. Don't waste your time, he's no mensch. My suspicion is he's cherry picking options- especially based on the other negative reviews that say the same thing. add in the 400 minimum PLUS travel time, and I feel that he's a ripoff- not worth it. read more

Handy Mensch Home Remodeling completed a new deck for us in January 2021. Our original deck was built without flashing between the house and deck, which caused a leak in our ground floor basement. After searching unsuccessfully for solutions and contractors for months, we found Handy Mensch and had to look no further. Lenny visited our home and explained in detail why the solution to our problem would be to build a new deck, install flashing and correct any areas of water damage. He was very patient and informative, and explained each step of the process in detail. The timeline for the project was clearly defined, and an introduction to Sean, the project manager, was made. Scheduling, start dates, milestones, and estimated completion dates were explained. We were impressed with the knowledge, timeliness, professionalism and communication of both Lenny and Sean, as well as the skills and workmanship of rest of the team. Sean was available for questions throughout the process and gave us updates on the team's progress. Lenny wrote very detailed work orders, that included all the information that we spoke of during his initial visit and other conversations. The workers were very respectful of limiting access to areas of the house during COVID, as we requested, which was very reassuring. They worked efficiently and thoroughly without delays. Sean was at the site each day to give direction, communicate progress to us and make sure that everything went smoothly. He also gave us updates during each step of the county permit approval and inspection process, as well as the final inspection by the county of the completed deck. The workmanship and final deck are a very high-quality build and the problem of the water leak into our basement was resolved. We are very happy with the design of our new deck and we look forward to using it. Handy Mensch also repaired the damage to our basement drywall, and they painted the ceiling and walls of the family room and hallway so that the repairs are seamless and not visible. Once the work was completed, all debris from construction and demolition was removed promptly from our property, and Sean walked us through a final inspection. Since we were very happy with the work and smooth process of our deck project, we have decided to have Handy Mensch do two additional improvement projects in our home, and others in the future. So we wanted to install 4 new bathroom sink faucets. After doing 1 kitchen faucet on my own, I did not want to do 4 more. So after shopping around we found The Handy Mensch and their prices were lower on this job than every plumber I contacted, and because I emailed pictures of the faucets and pipes, they did not need to waste my time by coming out to do an estimate, then coming another day to do the work. Because of the blizzard scheduling became a little bit of a challenge, but Lenny and Tricia were very communicative of the situation. We settled on a day and time. They said they would be there between 9:30-10:30 on a Tuesday. Dan was there at 9:34. Dan did good work, was very pleasant and professional. I have used Lenny and his team several times to do remodeling projects at my investment property in Reston Virginia. Lenny just completed a total renovation of the master bathroom. The master bathroom is small, and Lenny had to be creative to make space. Lenny moved the toilet, removed the old fiberglass shower and put in a whole new custom build shower, vanity, toilet and tiled the whole bathroom. We had the HandyMensch come out to do some work in our crawlspace - lay a vapor barrier and fill in holes in our insulation. They were on top of it - confirmed all appointments, came on time (often early!), were respectful and thorough. Their quote was higher than what we'd hoped for the services, but that was more from our misunderstanding of the time necessary for a vapor shield, than from inordinately high pricing. My husband double checked their work last night, as a last check before we mailed them a check for our remaining balance due - he was happy with the vapor barrier, but patches of the insulation were still missing. We were concerned that this would open up unpleasant conversations about whether we'd communicated (and had included in our quote) all the areas missing insulation, or just the biggest one. We felt we'd been clear, but you never know if something got lost in translation, and we really didn't want to pay even more than the agreed-upon quote. They were great. We sent pictures of the places missing insulation, and expressed our concern that these hadn't been done. Two hours later, Lenny emailed back apologizing and promising to make it right (with no talk of additional charges!); another two hours after that, Dan arrived to do the work. An hour after that (all within the same day of sending my email), the work is done and my husband is swearing we'll never use a different handyman. We highly, highly recommend. read more

This is our second experience with The Handy Mensch and we have been very happy with both experiences. Our most recent experience with the company was work on our kitchen. Lenny came in for an estimate and spent a good hour going over what we would like done and how we would proceed. We had IKEA cabinets and sink along with our appliances installed by IKEA's recommend company and during that process Lenny was amazing at communicating with me exactly what he needed done so that he could complete his half of the job. He fielded a couple of panicked phone calls from me with ease! The first part of the job they completed for me was installation of my quartzite countertops. That process was quick and easy. The countertops look perfect and the estimate I got from Lenny was by far the best out of three estimates I got! The second part of the job was some electrical work that needed to be done. Again, a quick easy process and Lenny's price was better than another estimate I got (by quite a bit!) A few days after the work was complete I got an email from Lenny letting me know that something or another was able to re-used by the electrician and I would receive a credit on my final invoice! If he hadn't sent that email I would have been none the wiser and he could have walked away with that money. I appreciate honesty in a company beyond anything else! The third part of the job was demoing drywall, installing wooden support blocking for open shelving, putting up new drywall, tiling a backsplash all the way to the ceiling, and finally installing open shelving. This was the longest and most frustrating part, since we lost the use of our kitchen for another 5 days, but Lenny's crew was great. They arrived every morning on time, except one morning they had mechanical issues, but Lenny kept me up to date the entire time by my preferred method of communication, texting. Love a company that will text me! My only issue with this entire process was that I felt like it took a bit longer than it should have. When I'm paying by the hour that concerned me a bit, but the work truly is flawless, so I chalk it up to the guys just being very meticulous. Not to mention, I didn't receive a single other estimate for a price as good as Lenny's so I can't really complain! We have an older home and I have done business with quite a few companies the last few years and more often than not I am exhausted and frustrated by the end. Both times I have worked with Lenny (our first time was some work on our attic, including insulation, work on our chimney, and some work on our gutters) have been great experiences. There has been almost zero stress, the crew cleans up after themselves, and I ALWAYS receive a quick response to my emails and calls. They are honest and I have yet to have one of their quotes beaten by someone else! We will certainly be using The Handy Mensch in the future. read more

I called this company three times to get an estimate on what turned out to be a $10,000 job. The first time I was told that a form would be sent to me, which I never received (and, yes, I did check my spam). I called two more times and was told someone would call back but never got a call. I was very disappointed because I love the name and they advertise in our Temple directory but it was a big waste of time. Just received reply stating that I was contacted and pictures were requested but the owner must have me mixed up with someone else because that didn't happen. My first Yelp review. Working with The handyMensch was SUCH a great experience. We were in the process of selling my town home and needed the deck repaired, per the home inspection. You wouldn't believe how many companies - deck specific, contractors and handymen - I called and emailed to try and get a consultation, an estimate, a prognosis of the issue - anything, to no avail. However, when I submitted my inquiry through The HandyMensch website, I promptly received a phone call requesting more details. Lenny was extremely knowledgeable, very helpful and accommodating, as we were getting down to the wire with our closing date. We were able to set up an appointment for him to come out and look at the deck to draw up what would correct the slight movement. A couple days later the deck work was completed (new bracing), the problem fixed 100% just as Lenny said. I know who to call in the future when work is needed around the house! There was some inconsistent with the new fixtures and the dimmer switches; so when we noted some flickering they came back to update the switches and bulb fixtures for consistency.
