We contacted Nest in June 2024 when I noticed a wet spot on my dining room ceiling. They responded quickly giving us an estimate for repair for the leak and some additional repairs. As with any leak, it is never where you think it is, a few weeks later and more rain another wet spot on the ceiling. In 1990 I built a custom-designed house on the last vacant lot in Truro. My Dad had bought it from the developer to save his backyard "forest" and protect his home from having a house built 50 feet from his back door. My 30 year-old roof finally gave up the ghost late in 2019, shedding broken pieces of shingle and growing moss and leaking slightly over the front porch. I wrote up a brief description of what I wanted done, which included new gutters with leaf/debris guards and minor repairs to my cedar siding, then made on-line contact with five Virginia companies. During the process I discovered that the four skylights on my roof should also be replaced, which was just as well because I could no longer keep them clean. Only one firm, JGL, was able to handle ALL my needs. Robert Gay met with me at home, did a thorough inspection, had his team that handled the siding work also do a thorough inspection before bidding. His bid was not the lowest, but the difference was minimal, but I got a sense that he and his crews would be thorough and careful. I accepted the bid and made a one-third down-payment so he could order materials. JGL has been cooperative, pleasant to work with and responsive to my needs. Two examples come to mind: 1) About a week before the work started, we experienced water dripping from the HVAC ceiling vent into our second floor bedroom during an extremely heavy storm. I called Robert, and he had a repair crew on the roof the next day to patch the suspected area. 2) After I accepted the bid, which I learned included a type of gutter guard that concerned me based on my research, I asked whether it was possible to make a change and proposed some alternatives that I thought would work better. Robert responded by accepting the change and asking only a small increase in the bid for the higher cost of materials. Then the weather closed in. Several days with rain proved JGL's repairs to be effective, but delayed the planned start. Robert's crew arrived on a sunny Saturday morning to tear off the old roof and start the replacement. Everything appeared well coordinated, so that by nightfall, the southern side of the roof had been completed. I had expected the largely Hispanic crew to return on Monday, but they told me they'd be back the next day to finish and clean up. Unfortunately, as Robert explained, there had been a mix-up with the supplier for the skylights, but he would have them installed later in the week, a process that took most of one day. The roof and new skylights look wonderful. And the roof comes with a 50-year warranty! The siding crew arrived a bit more than a week later. They were fast and thorough. In accordance with my request, they mainly used the left-over siding from the original construction (which I had stored in my basement for 30 years and they hauled out to install) or reused the existing siding for repairs. They provided additional materials when my supplies were insufficient. All the work was done in a day and the new materials were primed and prepped for a final finish that I will take care of. Their craftsmanship is excellent. The gutter installation was delayed slightly because my color choice was out of stock, but the crew actually arrived two days ahead of schedule and finished the installation on one short day. One small glitch in communicating one of my requirements resulted in someone having to go back up on the roof to finish a couple tasks after they were packed and almost ready to leave. One of the horror stories you often hear with roof replacements is the amount of debris (shingle scraps, roofing felt, nails, etc.) left behind. I have to say that after each crew left, I inspected the grounds. My home is surrounded by trees and I have no lawn. The property is a NWF-Certified Wildife Habitat and keeping it clear of extraneous material is sometimes arduous. JGL's crews were quite thorough: they used magnetic "brooms" to sweep for nails and other ferrous debris, they picked up virtually all of the visible scraps. I scoured the landscaping and found a few small strips of transparent wrapping material and a few tiny bits of old shingle afterwards (old Boy Scout habits, I guess). Then they used blowers to clear the area of granular material from the roofing and sawdust from the siding. I've subsequently found a couple nails wedged between the deck boards in the back of the house and one small screw at the bottom of the driveway, but all-in-all, JGL's clean-up was extremely good. I am hearing impaired, so all my communication with Robert and JGL has been on-line with e-mail or text messages or in face-to-face conversations. I have to say that despite the doubtless inconvenience to him, Robert Gay has been always friendly, courteous, professional and thorough in his conduct toward me and my wife. I doubt that I will have to do business with JGL again in my lifetime, but if I end up with another house in need of a roof, I will contact them in a heartbeat. read more

We've used JGL twice before this. They replaced a storm-damaged roof at our old house and then did some work at a historic home my wife manages. This time they came to our current home to check where we had a leak that had appeared in our family room ceiling. They fixed that problem along with others that they found. (They showed us photos to show us what was going on.) We also needed new gutters as the existing ones were old and clogged constantly. We'd had estimates for new gutters before and didn't like any of the companies, so we had put it off. Absolutely terrific experience. I called to a simple routine roof inspection because I hadn't had one in a while and wanted to make sure shingles were in order and no water had seeped through due to strong weather over the years. Robert came and looked over the roof and saw no problems but took ample pictures. He also took a look into my attic and took some pictures of the roof plywood since I was also concerned of damage that could be hiding there. In addition he showed me a gap I had on a joint where the chimney meets the roof that could use some caulking and recommended me another company that might be able to help. The experience was quite positive and from what I can see honest (no hard selling and over exaggerating for the mere sake of it). In 2017, a microburst tornado came through town and literally peeled off nearly half of my roof. I called several roofers in panic and Josh was by far the most compassionate, calm, and responsive roofer that answered after business hours. It was not easy to convey that rain was coming down from light fixtures and I could see the cracks of the sky from my bedroom. Josh calmly explained to me that repairs cannot be done in the rain and how to temporarily triage the damage. He came as soon as it stopped raining and assessed the roof thoroughly. His team- not only tarped over exposed ceiling- but also checked the walls for mold and bought in fans to dry out the drywall. JGL Roofing's prompt fix avoided me a lot of trouble from potential mold and water damage. They also worked with my insurance company and installed a beautiful eco-friendly roof. It literally sparkles! Instantly- we noticed our upstairs bedroom was so much better insulated from the cold during winter while staying cooler during the summer. When he came to our house to give us a quote he explained what he would be doing. He went on the roof, took pictures and then went over each photo with me to show me what was wrong and what he recommended. He was not pushy or forceful in getting the sale. He left me with a packet which included a variety of shingle samples and information about their process. I received two proposals via email later that day one for part of the roof and one for the entire roof. My wife and I went over both proposals and decided to go ahead with re-doing the entire roof. The roofers completed 3200 square feet in 2 1/2 days. If I ever needed Robert or had a question I could call or text him directly and he would always answer. In September of 2017, I engaged JGL to replace my roof and fix a leak in the corner of townhouse that is attached to another. Josh was professional, but had difficulty being on time for the estimate appointment. I tried to get a discount for replacing the roofs of my and my neighbors, so that the leak would be fixed, since the leak initiated from the neighbor's roof. But my neighbor claimed he didn't have the funds to replace his roof, but Josh honored the discount for my roof anyway. On the day of work, early November 2017, the workers were very careless with discarding old shingles. There was minor damage to my newly replaced post lamp in front of my townhouse, as well as the paint on the front door frame. There were also lots of shingles that landed on my front bushes. Also many shingles landed on a metal roof over the bay window that protrudes out of the front of the townhouse. JGL also did not fix the portion of the neighbor's roof that was causing the leak; they only sealed it. The crew finished work in 4 hours! When the work was done, the cleanup was superb, but the damages were not addressed. When Josh and I connected on payment, I showed him the damages. He offered to paint the roof of the bay window, and volunteered a $500 temporary reduction of payment until his crew comes to paint that portion when the weather was warmer in 2018; this never happened. After one torrential rainfall in June 2018, I noticed the leak started again where JGL had sealed the leak on my neighbor's roof. So I demanded my neighbor to replace his roof. In August 2018, Both my neighbor and I paid handsomely to cover our front door stoops and steps in high quality masonry work. My neighbor reengaged JGL/Josh, after several attempts, to ratify the contract Josh had drawn in 2017. When the work began on my neighbor's roof later in August 2018, the crew covered my neighbor's front stoop and steps with a tarp throughout the 4 days of work. But they had the utmost disregard for my front stoop and steps, as well as my backyard, with respect to debris. My new masonry work was covered in debris, scratches from nails and staples, stains from shingles glue, and particles of shingles. The backyard was covered with discarded flashing pieces, shingles and debris, and nails/staples. The crew never laid a tarp on my new masonry work, despite my numerous requests to Josh. When the work was done, I asked Josh to power wash my new masonry work; to date I have not received an acknowledgment from JGL nor Josh in this regard. After comparing the work on my roof vs that of my neighbor's, it is clear that JGL did a much more thorough and clean job on my neighbor's roof than mine, having worked on them 4 days vs 4 hours respectively. UPDATE: Yesterday, my neighbor brought it to my attention that while I was away on vacation, JGL hired a third party service, or used their own staff, to attempt to power wash the stains caused by the work they performed on my neighbor's roof. The power washing left many streaks of discoloration on my front door stoop and steps masonry work. I sent a demand letter to JGL requesting remedy, which could include replacement. Josh immediately replied via email and phone call, refusing to accept responsibility for this negligence. I am now forced to prepare to take legal action against JGL Roofing and Exterior for repair/replacement of the damaged they caused on my front door stoop and steps masonry work. read more

Robert of JGL came out to do a free estimate on a very small window project and to check the state of our roof. While our window job wasn't something they do, he went up on the roof, assessed where the possible leaks were, caulked the skylight up for free, and gave us a bunch of sound advice on what to do about the roof, which he suggested wait on before replacing. More dishonest companies would have tried to get more work out of us. He even gave us a reference for a handyman that may be able to do the window. My wife and I recently hired JGL Roofing to replace the shingles on our house and also put a new flat roof on our two car garage. They did a beautiful job and we were very happy with our experience working with JGL. Robert Gay came to do the estimate and he really took the time to look at our house and garage carefully. He answered all my questions and explained how the work would be done and what options were available. He had a detailed estimate put together within an hour that listed each item and gave prices for all options and upgrades. We were able to schedule the work within a few weeks. Two hard working crews showed up on the scheduled day, one for each roof, and finished almost everything the same day. We have a lot of landscaping with garden beds close to the house and Robert was honest with me about the possibility that, with so much old roofing material coming down, some plants might get damaged. Therefore when our roof needed replacing, I knew I wanted to get an estimate from them due to their honesty! They have a laundry list of items that they won't do. They don't paint. No wood repair unless under shingles. No flat roof repairs. Don't use them for a flat roof unless you want a full roof replacement. On the upside, they didn't accept work that they were going to half-ass. My primary issue with them is that the front office has a tough time communicating with back office, because I told them exactly what I wanted prior to showing up to my house. On the upside, they were prompt and polite. They might do good work, but I wasn't able to use them. read more

No one particularly wants to spend a ton of money on putting a new roof on your house. Fortunately, Robert Gay and his crew at JGL has made the process as seemless and pleasant as possible. We got 5 quotes which were all over the map. JGL provided a detailed, no pressure explanation of what our house needed and the process that they go through on each roof. We were provided with a nice folder to go through at our leisure, though as soon as we got the quote, we were sold. And they didn't disappoint. They were able to get to our leaking roof quickly and the crew worked incredibly hard. When our ancient roof provided extra challenge for the crew, I got a personal call from Robert explaining what they had run across and how they were handling it. Best of all, it wasn't a complaint because of the hard work, or an excuse to raise the price. It was just good customer service. I would gladly recommend JGL to anyone that needs roof work. Dealt with Josh of this company in 2018 who proved to be dishonest and unethical. Was provided a quote face to face and then a written quote which was extremely higher. Not to mention that after I said I did not want them to do the roof, they unexpectedly delivered shingles on my roof hammering them in the current roof causing holes in the existing roof. Josh them up to it and patched the holes in the roof. I can't speak to the current ownership however just my experience with the previous owner - Josh. There are far better roofing services and more trustworthy ones. I ultimately went with an honest company - NV roofing and they did an excellent job. read more

Showed up on time and were professional during the first look at the damage and assessed needed repairs, and stayed that way through completion of the job. Unlike the other estimators, Rob really looked at the roof and the underside of it, thoroughly determining what needed to be done. Rob was quick, clear and regular in his communication with me as to how the job was progressing. I went online in October for repairs to my roof and gutters. Robert Gay setup an appointment to give an estimate. The estimate was reasonable and signed a agreement to have the work done. The roofing crew came out on the day of the appointment and did the work. The following day the gutter crew came out and did there part. I had assume that Robert or someone from JGL would come out and inspect the work that the crews had done and let me know if there were any issues they did not. If your looking for roofers I would suggest that you make sure the company you going to use has their own crew to do the work. But that's not why I'm giving five stars. I'm giving five stars because of the way Josh handled a little unintended situation along the way. In this case, as the roof was being replaced, a recessed light inside the house was knocked out of its housing. It's the type of thing that just happens when you're doing repair and construction projects. Unintended consequences. But in this case, it was a light in a very hard-to-access spot inside my home. I called him as soon as I saw the problem, worried that he was going to deflect or blame something else. Nope. Josh stepped right up, told me he'd take care of it, and came out to do it himself. JGL as a whole showed utmost respect, timeliness, thoroughness, and efficiency.
